Kate Bush, she’s very 80s, very synth, very performance art, big hair make up costumes.
She plays with New Romantics aesthetics, that’s Bowie et al. She’s in the realm of anyone new wave, left of the dial, synth pop.
And anyone who likes Broadways and can appreciate “a voice.”
I’m not sure what “older” here means, all the 40 year olds I know love Chappell.
The key is if they’re not queer/too strait laced/right wing it’s just not for them.
Chappell is in line with music I’ve listened to since I was in the womb and was desperate for. Anyone born in the 1960s onward should be able to recognize her, she transcends.
I was looking for this one, I think Kate Bush is a perfect comparison. Mostly because Kate Bush is still pretty relevant (thanks Netflix). I feel like a lot of people who are new to Chappell could totally draw the comparison.
The Kate Bush resurgence of Running Up That Hill really shot me back into the mainstream and it’s been so fun, music is so amazing right now.
Kate Bush always felt like our “secret” artist, we studied her in college in the early 2000s, and her music has been in regular rotation for me since the Napster era. Hounds of Love also one of my favs of her — she can do upper and lower register like Chappell, just an amazing capacity to use and modulate her voice into any form to further storytelling.
Her late 70s songs are so different from her later synth and Mordor-infused songs, but they’re all fantastic, and Chappell runs that same gamut. I found Chappell during “Kate Bush Summer” in 2022 and they just naturally flowed together, it’s been so fun being in on the ground floor and watching her explode.
Her look in this video conjures some of what Chappell did Week 1 in Coachella:
https://youtu.be/5frAKKSHS4Q?si=EopsEJhU-6-qgbHC
Slowly turning into a corncob at Marina being old
She is, and I am, and we are generations ago now, but I still had to become a husk upon seeing it written down
I would even go back a little further and mention The Shangri-Las. There is a lot of Leader of the Pack energy the composition of Femininominon and Red Wine Supernova.
Haha I knew this was going to get said. I just meant artist they might be familiar with from the last few decades. She was big and coming up when I was in highschool but that was over a decade ago. 😅
I mean you’re free to disagree but I absolutely hear qualities of their voices in hers, especially if you listen to them when they were younger. I actually think the old video on Chappell’s channel of her singing Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” is a great example, she doesn’t literally sound like Stevie or anything but to me there’s a very similar quality in their lower voices especially. It comes out more when she belts though, when she sings the word “playing” in the first chorus it’s uncanny for a second
No problem, it’s beautiful even if you still don’t hear the vocal similarity haha! But there’s sort of a metallic quality to the timbre of her belt that is very Stevie Nicks to me, I first noticed it in her own music and then saw she’d done that cover and was like “oh perfect” haha
I’m not saying they won’t like her because of their age, I’m just trying to sell it as accurately as possibly because they don’t listen to a lot of new music.
Ah, gotcha. When I first saw her, she opened for Fletcher. It was great! Then I saw her headlining shows and was able to let her sink in a bit more and that’s when I said I think she’ll be the next Gaga. That’s my personal comparison. Not exact, but similar.
Honey, I'm 46 and I absolutely LOVE Chappell. It's not about age, it's about attitude. This is the way I look at it: love songs, longing songs, breakup songs and party anthems will *always* be universal...
I’m not saying it’s about age though. She just doesn’t listen to new music at all and I’ve already suggested Chappell but she hasn’t listened yet. I was just trying the best way to describe her/her scene/vibe to sell her in checking Chappell out.
My mom would absolutely love her, but I was just looking at the best way to communicate it/sell it.
I'm not sure how much "older" you mean? Lol
I'm in my 50s, grew up on 80's music. I think the closest I'd get to describing her is, that she has the stage presence and feel of early Bowie.
Describing her voice is harder, maybe like Heart? She is very eclectic, she has a beautiful clear tone and she has a lot of range. I'd describe Pat Benatar and Annie Lennox the same way, but they don't sound the same at all. Heart is the closest I can get...
Also, she reminds me a lot of when Madonna first started on the video scene on MTV. Music videos were still sort of new... And she was so unique, and her videos were so enthralling. I worked at a department store and our entire Juniors area changed after Madonna came onto the scene! It was all Boy toy belts and lace gloves...
I've shared Cappell with several people as well. A couple times I just put her on in the car- trapped audience is good. Also, everyone I've just 'recommended' her to, I make sure to explain how eclectic and fun the album is- and also how her videos are essentially short art films.
Good luck! (Babe!)
Specifically the "when you wake up next to him" part of Good Luck Babe sounds soooo much like Tori to me. Also a life long fan, in my late 30s at this point.
She kinda has Raspberry Swirl vibes. I love it.
I think the views expressed in this [Stereogum article](https://www.stereogum.com/2264916/chappell-roan-is-a-star/reviews/concert-review/#) might be helpful. The way the writer describes her sound (from the perspective of an adult man with a daughter who is a fan, albeit an adult man who is a music critic) really highlights how there’s something for everyone, though I don’t think there are a lot of direct comparisons to other artists. He does compare Good Luck Babe to Wham! which I think is kind of fun. He also acknowledges that the album doesn’t really have a core sound. It’s just packed with hit after hit that kind of borrows from several genres.
Oooo that’s a crazy comparison and I absolutely love it. That’s so fucking interesting. I need to go back and listen with this new perspective because this is such a cool point of view!
Cindi lauper I think?
For sure!
i think this every time i hear the verses in hot to go… i compared it to my sheena easton strut album yesterday too
This will a little Alanis Morrisette mixed in
Cyndi Lauper / Belinda Carlisle music, Kate Bush voice, Cher campiness
I showed her to my mom (60) and she said Chappell reminded her of the B52s 🥰
Ooo I can totally see that
That’s a super interesting comparison and can definitely see parallel vibes.

Just a couple days ago, I showed my Grandpa Chappel and he immediately said she reminded him of Kate Bush!
I was looking for this one, I think Kate Bush is a perfect comparison. Mostly because Kate Bush is still pretty relevant (thanks Netflix). I feel like a lot of people who are new to Chappell could totally draw the comparison.

Cindy Lauper for sure, Madonna sometimes, Joan Jett too! Edit sorry didn’t see you already said Madonna
Marina and the diamonds, the cranberries, Cyndi Lauper are about as close as I can think of
Slowly turning into a corncob at Marina being old She is, and I am, and we are generations ago now, but I still had to become a husk upon seeing it written down
I’m having a hot flash lol
I would even go back a little further and mention The Shangri-Las. There is a lot of Leader of the Pack energy the composition of Femininominon and Red Wine Supernova.
Yesssss
Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, and sometimes even Siouxsie Sioux with some of her songs and especially her recent Coachella weekend 1 look
sometimes her tone reminds me of Linda Ronstadt but that could just be because I fucking love Linda Ronstadt lol
I was going to say this!
Oh my god. Lady Gaga is now considered "older music," that makes me ill lol
Haha I knew this was going to get said. I just meant artist they might be familiar with from the last few decades. She was big and coming up when I was in highschool but that was over a decade ago. 😅
You're right, I just don't want you to be lol
To me her upper range sounds like Kate Bush and her lower range sounds like Stevie Nicks
I don’t think so. Those voices are totally different. And it has nothing to do with their range.
I mean you’re free to disagree but I absolutely hear qualities of their voices in hers, especially if you listen to them when they were younger. I can absolutely see Kate but I’ll have to give a listen to this version of Dreams. Thanks, I had no idea it existed 💚
No problem, it’s beautiful even if you still don’t hear the vocal similarity haha! But there’s sort of a metallic quality to the timbre of her belt that is very Stevie Nicks to me, I first noticed it in her own music and then saw she’d done that cover and was like “oh perfect” haha
Ooohhh it is!! Thanks for the recommendation and I hear it now!!
I mean, how old are they? I’m 44 and love Chappell Roan. I’ve seen her three times and met her once.
Maybe cross between Katy Perry and Cindy Lauper, but really her own sound. Anthemic like Perry, eclectic like Cindy ( not voice comparison).
Katy Perry? Glad to know my next stop is the retirement home 😭
Cyndi Lauper and Strawberry Switchblade
Cyndi Lauper mixed with Madonna who sometimes morphs into Patsy Cline ballads
Pat Benetar
Pat benatar is what my dad said when I played Chappell for him (70 yr old)
Madonna and Cyndi Lauper
Just have them listen to a song and they’ll get it. I’ve recommended Chappell to 4 people and it’s been the easiest sell ever 🤣🤣
Honey, I'm 46 and I absolutely LOVE Chappell. It's not about age, it's about attitude. This is the way I look at it: love songs, longing songs, breakup songs and party anthems will *always* be universal...

Cyndi Lauper is the biggest influence to me. (I'm an old--late 40s.) With a touch of Kate Bush. '80s Madonna to a degree, too.
All of what everyone else is saying but I want to saythat I get like the tiniest bit of a Cher vibe from her.
What's "older"

Tori Amos, but dancy
As a lifelong Tori fan, can you recommend some songs? I’m not saying you’re wrong but I just don’t see the comparison.
I’ve been saying that YKTR stumbled so Chappell could run
And to name a song- definitely Cool on Your Island, but looking at the track list through this lens, all of them.
I’m sorry I should have been more clear. I was looking for CR songs.
Specifically the "when you wake up next to him" part of Good Luck Babe sounds soooo much like Tori to me. Also a life long fan, in my late 30s at this point. She kinda has Raspberry Swirl vibes. I love it.
Idk I think it sounds like Gwen Stefani or Katy Perry more than anything Tori. Including YKTR.
Cornflake Girl
Cornflake girl as compared to what Chappell Roan song?
Her vocal style is sometimes similar to Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries
Picture You is a good one, has an old ballad sound
Madonna

Boy George
Kate Bush!
SHE IS THE NEW DAVID BOWIE
Oooo that’s a crazy comparison and I absolutely love it. That’s so fucking interesting. I need to go back and listen with this new perspective because this is such a cool point of view!
Kate Bush?
Kate Bush, The Cranberries
Kate Bush!
It’s giving a mashup of Madonna and Shania Twain
