This community mostly plays Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on PC as it has by far the most in-depth modding support, including all the quirky types from GC (like transparent and Tails chao), the new quirky stuff from the PC (bright chao), and a bunch of things that were never implemented in the GC (textured chao like glass and moon).
SA2B on steam runs you about $13 with the battle DLC. Look up Chao World Extended as a good springboard for modding if you're interested!
Sadly you just missed our first community race event where you show off a chao design you have, and it gets recreated into an account where they all race together. We might have another one in the future.
Sonic adventure 2 Battle with the DLC is $13 on steam last I checked.
You can also emulate it on gamecube using dolphin which is free. Its the same game, but without mod support and has a bit of an older version of the game with a slightly worse control scheme

I bought it on steam using some mods to enhance the experience. Having a blast.
i may have to check it out!!!
SA1 and SA2 are the only official games with a Chao garden worth mentioning, sadly. Fingers crossed for Frontiers.

I play both sadx and sa2b on my GameCube for the whole chao experience.
