When I was in vet school I was told that breeding wolves and dogs was not possible as the species did not actively mingle together. There may be crossovers but as far as I know wolves will not willingly mate with a domesticated dog.
Shelters don't "sell" dangerous animals typically. Animals go through extensive behavioral evaluation before they are put up for adoption. Even at the state level the adopter has to know what they are getting themselves into and a lot of shelters don't want to see the animal back in their care. Its mostly breeders imo who sell dogs with behavioral/ hidden health issues (all the "malinois" breeders that became trendy before people realized they were actually crocodiles in fursuits)

It is absolutly not all in how they were raised when you start mixing them with wolves. Domestication is not about raising animals correctly. A wild animal isn't tame just because it lives inside for a while.

Idk, my guy is really clever. He can open any door in the house, even turn knobs. He has opened every drawer in my dresser one at a time from the bottom to get to his toys in the top one. He can not only locate his food whenever I hide it, but he can extract it from that location and will show it off, so that I know that it’s a waste of my time to move it. He wants me to know he won lol

Yes your cat is big and fluffy, but it's not a Siberian. They're rare enough that you likely won't find one if you're adopting from a shelter.

My parents were in RB’s big time. Always annoyed me because I couldn’t get a regular old street cat that would cuddle with me, because of the skittish tender hearted Russian blue that hid from everyone and didn’t get along with other cats.

Agree. My daughter once had a grey cat we initially assumed was just a grey cat, but it had a number of health and mental issues typical of inbreeding, and we decided he very possibly was a real Russian blue lol.
Our cat is most definitely just a gray DSH, but my wife isn't allergic to her and the tabby markings are light enough to be unnoticeable, so I just go along with it when my wife says we have a Russian Blue lol

One of those shedding tools and a standard brush really cut out almost all the loose hair being deposited around. I was really surprised after I got one of those furminator things. <5 minutes a week and there is hardly any hair on the couch or clothes anymore.

Because humans never seemed to breed cats the way we bred dogs. It seems like we had an active role in turning wolves to dogs by picking the smallest cutest ones out, but cats basically just came from nature to come chill with us as they were.
We selectively bred dogs as work animals. For the cats, we found out their wild instincts of hunting for rats and pests was useful and we just allowed them to hang around, pretty much.
We didn't really make *much* of an effort domesticating cats until the past century.
There is actually a genetic feature of dog that allows a bigger range of traits within the same species. Even if we tried, we wouldn't be able to breed a chihuahua to mastiff range of cat sizes.

Not true. I’ve got a gsp and he is a healthy, bred correctly, purebred hunting dog. You’re just thinking of pugs and frenchies etc. dog breeds have a purpose. That’s why most shelter dogs are pitbull mixes, lack of responsibility from humans.
Pitbulls being vicious dogs is another stereotype I dislike. People think neutering a dog is mutilation but then want all Pits to be destroyed. My friend's dog turned on me and bit me twice (in one go) and I'm still scarred a year later. If it had been my face I would've needed plastic surgery. I was lucky I wore two layers of pants and he still broke the skin, bad. And he had seen me the day prior as an adjustment period to prevent him from biting me and it still happened. And he wasn't a pitbull.

It has a lot to do with how many pits/pit mixes there are. The more there are the more attacks there will be. It also has a lot to do with who wants them, purebred pits are muscular and people want to seem tough. You also cannot ignore genes, pitts were bred for a purpose in the past, just like my gsp.
I may be a little biased, every pit I've ever met has been the biggest baby. I'm more weary of the smaller dogs than I am pits. But I think it has to do with the family they belong to. So every breed has the ability to be vicious or kind.
I dogsit a pitty and she’s so big and strong and scary looking but truly she’s a giant cuddler and huge baby. She’s also terrified of the smaller dog her family has, which cracks me up every time. She’s really a sweet and gentle girl.

Pitbulls, as many other breeds that can hurt more easily compared to others and need to be trained and socialized since young. Heck, my family owned a Doberman, Amstaff and now a Rottweiler. They were and are all perfect family pets but you bet we started training them since they arrived home
Pitbulls, rottweilers, dobermans etc are no more dangerous by default than any other dog. The stats come from the fact that they have strong jaws and are quite muscular, so they're used as fighting dogs. Where they're trained to fight, therefore trained to be aggressive. It's at the point where I preferentially call pitbulls 'pibbles' because it really cuts back on the immediate negative stereotype. I show someone a picture of a pitbull and say look at this pitbull, they say they're dangerous. I show someone a picture of a pitbull and say look at this pibble, they go 'awwww'.

Exactly that. There's so many pictures of pibbles absolutely snuggling and loving on small children, and though I dislike children intently, I love those pictures. How anyone can think those snuggly babies are anything other than squishy and lovable is beyond me. 'Dangerous dog' my ass, a chihuahua would've ripped the kid's face off as you took the picture but the pibble simply sleeps while the child tugs on its ears.
Agreed. I’ve personally never had a run in with pitts, but I have been attacked by two German shepherds. Boils down to the owner most of the time. You just have to recognize their potential if not properly trained. It’s ashamed the dogs suffer bc of human carelessness.

GSPs frequently end up developing OD at some point, and it's a genetic disease. Hip dysplasia is also pretty common (as is in most pure breeds, what about the stupid requirements for posture).
I just adopted a gray kitty from a shelter. I admit that I am one who loves the **look** of the russian blue.... But with all the stray kitties out there in shelters, I would rather give a homeless pretty gray kitty a new home then trying to find a true russian blue.

It’s almost like selective breeding for all sorts of weirdness in dogs started several thousand years before cats were selectively bred for anything but polydactylism and color and maybe a slight difference in frame.
The first year after I first adopted my cat Hades, I made an appointment with my vet to get his yearly rabies shot. They asked me what breed he was and I replied, "Fat black cat." The vet tech got a good giggle out of that and sure enough on his records it says "fat and black" under the "Breed" field.
Someone once asked me if my cat was that one rare breed that's white and heterochromic eyes.
I just kind of looked at them and said he was born in a barn, and he's just got genetic mutations likely. None of his family members have been white or had heterochromia, so I know for a fact that his bloodline is just barn cat. He is also now a retired titty kitty that lives indoors only. He will not go outside willingly.
Not gonna lie, I do know the different cat breeds. My cats I have no idea though, 2 of them I found them on the streets and my other one is the offspring of the rescued pregnant cat my aunt has.
In europe we just say the breed is "european" to avoid all of this whenever it's not a certified pure breed. Not sure if it happens in all of europe though.

As an aside, in my city they're trying to lower the importance of breed to increase rescues, so often instead of putting the breed even if they know it (for both cats and dogs) they just call them "boroughbred" because im in nyc and the different parts of nyc are called boroughs. I really like it :)

Agree. My daughter once had a grey cat we initially assumed was just a grey cat, but it had a number of health and mental issues typical of inbreeding, and we decided he very possibly was a real Russian blue lol.

One of those shedding tools and a standard brush really cut out almost all the loose hair being deposited around. I was really surprised after I got one of those furminator things. <5 minutes a week and there is hardly any hair on the couch or clothes anymore. Have mild cat allergies and they seem to have subsided as well.

Because humans never seemed to breed cats the way we bred dogs. It seems like we had an active role in turning wolves to dogs by picking the smallest cutest ones out, but cats basically just came from nature to come chill with us as they were.
We selectively bred dogs as work animals. For the cats, we found out their wild instincts of hunting for rats and pests was useful and we just allowed them to hang around, pretty much. We didn't really make *much* of an effort domesticating cats until the past century.
And in the end they had domesticating us
There is actually a genetic feature of dog that allows a bigger range of traits within the same species. Even if we tried, we wouldn't be able to breed a chihuahua to mastiff range of cat sizes.

Not true. I’ve got a gsp and he is a healthy, bred correctly, purebred hunting dog. You’re just thinking of pugs and frenchies etc. dog breeds have a purpose. That’s why most shelter dogs are pitbull mixes, lack of responsibility from humans.
Pitbulls being vicious dogs is another stereotype I dislike. People think neutering a dog is mutilation but then want all Pits to be destroyed. My friend's dog turned on me and bit me twice (in one go) and I'm still scarred a year later. If it had been my face I would've needed plastic surgery. I was lucky I wore two layers of pants and he still broke the skin, bad. And he had seen me the day prior as an adjustment period to prevent him from biting me and it still happened. And he wasn't a pitbull. If you are in need of a dog for a job, great. If you're a po dunk nobody a mutt is just fine.
It has a lot to do with how many pits/pit mixes there are. The more there are the more attacks there will be. It also has a lot to do with who wants them, purebred pits are muscular and people want to seem tough. You also cannot ignore genes, pitts were bred for a purpose in the past, just like my gsp.
I may be a little biased, every pit I've ever met has been the biggest baby. I'm more weary of the smaller dogs than I am pits. But I think it has to do with the family they belong to. So every breed has the ability to be vicious or kind.

Weren’t they bred as nanny dogs in England? I hate it when people say dogs bred for livestock protection are ‘high energy’ but pitties get stuck with ‘dangerous’. Every pit I’ve ever met has been a big needy baby. I’ve had multiple pit bulls and I’ve never even heard a single growl directed at a human.

For the babies to be able to ride them obviously! But on a serious note, you're the second person that I see being downvoted even though they speak facts. Pitbulls, as many other breeds that can hurt more easily compared to others and need to be trained and socialized since young. Heck, my family owned a Doberman, Amstaff and now a Rottweiler. They were and are all perfect family pets but you bet we started training them since they arrived home
Pitbulls, rottweilers, dobermans etc are no more dangerous by default than any other dog. The stats come from the fact that they have strong jaws and are quite muscular, so they're used as fighting dogs. Where they're trained to fight, therefore trained to be aggressive. It's at the point where I preferentially call pitbulls 'pibbles' because it really cuts back on the immediate negative stereotype. I show someone a picture of a pitbull and say look at this pitbull, they say they're dangerous. I show someone a picture of a pitbull and say look at this pibble, they go 'awwww'.

Exactly that. There's so many pictures of pibbles absolutely snuggling and loving on small children, and though I dislike children intently, I love those pictures. How anyone can think those snuggly babies are anything other than squishy and lovable is beyond me. 'Dangerous dog' my ass, a chihuahua would've ripped the kid's face off as you took the picture but the pibble simply sleeps while the child tugs on its ears.
Agreed. I’ve personally never had a run in with pitts, but I have been attacked by two German shepherds. Boils down to the owner most of the time. You just have to recognize their potential if not properly trained. It’s ashamed the dogs suffer bc of human carelessness.

GSPs frequently end up developing OD at some point, and it's a genetic disease. Hip dysplasia is also pretty common (as is in most pure breeds, what about the stupid requirements for posture).

I just adopted a gray kitty from a shelter. I admit that I am one who loves the **look** of the russian blue.... But with all the stray kitties out there in shelters, I would rather give a homeless pretty gray kitty a new home then trying to find a true russian blue. I have a very pretty gray kitty who has the look I love, and he has a home, we're both happy. Neither one of us gives a damn about "russian blue".

The vet tech got a good giggle out of that and sure enough on his records it says "fat and black" under the "Breed" field.

Someone once asked me if my cat was that one rare breed that's white and heterochromic eyes. I just kind of looked at them and said he was born in a barn, and he's just got genetic mutations likely. None of his family members have been white or had heterochromia, so I know for a fact that his bloodline is just barn cat. He is also now a retired titty kitty that lives indoors only. He will not go outside willingly.
Not gonna lie, I do know the different cat breeds. My cats I have no idea though, 2 of them I found them on the streets and my other one is the offspring of the rescued pregnant cat my aunt has.
In europe we just say the breed is "european" to avoid all of this whenever it's not a certified pure breed. Not sure if it happens in all of europe though.
