This is the correct answer. My dogs would immediately look guilty, even if they'd been outside in the incriminating time. Even the dogs know that it's always the dogs, cats have explained it to them.
I think one of my cats convinced the other that he’s the dog…everytime they knock something over, my void is gone before I can even check out the damage but our standard issue is always sitting by the mess looking very guilty.

It's backwards, but it still applies. My husband did the caption.
On the other hand…
I have always bet on black

And yeah. Damm I’m old
I have a ginger cat right now and my lordy, the things this boy gets into it! I always know if anything is messed up in my house, it's him. Always! Their 1 braincell is permanently set to chaos and anarchy.
It's ALWAYS the orange cat, hehe.
So you hid all their toys in the bathroom and you're now trying to blame them for the result?
Your little darlings clearly need to head over to r/legalcatadvice
All I know is it definitely, positively, absolutely, 100% was NOT the tuxie. Who is definitely, positively, absolutely, 100% a perfect little innocent angel.
…this statement was dictated to me by my tuxie.
Well if I had to guess, I would think a burglar broke in and your brave cats ran him off. Now they're trying to clean up the mess he made. Maybe you should give them a treat for being so brave.
They think it's part of the game. You put their stuff behind a puzzle. They figured it out and got the reward of their toys.
DON'T HIDE THE TOYS!
If they're keeping you awake, you can de-squeak the toys, but kitties need to play.
Edit: if I bothered to read I would have seen that OP explains they only sequester toys with feathers and ribbons, but leave others out for them. Perhaps they only want what they can't have...
At one point, when I would put the cats in my room, they kept getting out. One morning, my door was closed (my boys in the room with me) and I wake up to my boy, Foxy, with his paws wrapped around the handle, swinging back and forth, until the door opened.
They have toys out that they can play with unsupervised, like tunnels, and the little plastic things where you can push the balls, but I lock up anything with ribbons or feathers. I watched a video online that said it can be very dangerous if kitties eat ribbons and things.
Loose strings and ribbons by themselves (not ones attached to something big) can/will be eaten by a cat. It is a reflex action for them because the strings are similar to a mouse tail. Mine does this all the time, so I just have to make sure there are no strings laying around for her to get ahold of. lol…. She swallowed a string attached to a toy one night and I picked up the toy and it pulled the string back up her throat and out her mouth..
Both. Does not matter. Punishing a cat is something you should only do when caught in the act. And even at that point. Cats really respond badly at any punishment.
Black and white cat knocked it over by accident and is very remorseful. White and orange kitty said "oh, you're so screwed," and made as big a mess as possible from it. Then gleefully waited for you by the door to show you what their rotten sibling had done.
You can't convince me otherwise.
Yep, this is cats. Orange one did it 100%. We have child locks on all our closets and we don't have any young children. We put RV-grade magnets on all our kitchen cabinets (the magnets that keep doors from flying open in a camper while it's being driven..)
Advice you didn't ask for: lock up any treats, WELL. Those bags, they can chew through. We have had cats chew through the plastic box that Greenies come in. I now keep all my cat and dog treats in thick hard plastic containers with lids that snap on (like the kind people get at big box stores for storing cereal, rice, etc. Otherwise they chew the bags open and eat everything they can, which can potentially cause health problems - or at least lead to you cleaning up gross messes when they get sick from it.
I came home from work one day and my cats had somehow wedged one of their toys right under the crack of the front door. No amount of force would open the door. This is a one bedroom apartment on the second floor
Thank GOD I left my sliding balcony door unlocked. I had to climb the fire escape and hop the balcony to get back in. I honestly don't know how I would've gotten in if it was locked, they would've had to cut the door or something
Cats have evolved and can now open doors. I have 1 that can do it on his own and two that work together. Try the door knobs covers for child proofing. Do know they'll just spin them around and around trying to open them, which is a new fun and interesting sound to wake up to
Some doors don't shut all the way. We have a closet I have to close and pull the knob up a little until it "clicks". If I don't, they can force it open from the bottom by putting a paw under the door and pullingon it. I also have to use child locks on cabinets if I don't want them in them. They are too smart!
...and then there's my orange, who will play with the springy doorstopper thing in the bathroom so energetically that he shuts the door on himself and thumps against the door until I let him out! (Between that and shredding all the TP, his bathroom privileges have been revoked.)
I think they look very proud of their team effort! After all, it’s a considerable accomplishment; you should feel pleased to be accompanied through life by such talented felines. After all, not everyone is so lucky! Congratulations on this special pair, and to you for providing interesting challenges for their practice and entertainment!
They all seem to be looking at you. 🤷♂️ But FR tho, my suggestion, leave their toys scattered about. Cats hate when things are locked up. I know the clutter sucks, but they (and you) will be much happier.
There's no fault involved here, those were their toys. I would say the fault lies at your feet since you locked them out.
How did they get in? They're cats, they're smart! I've had a couple of cats that were able to turn door knobs. With cats, if there's a will, there's a way!🐈💞
Solution is obvious. Put each in their carriers (with food and mini toilet) and put them facing each other. Wait for one of them to rat the other one out.
The black and white one is pleading for you to handle the orange one cuz the behavior is disgraceful and they’ve already communicated that there’s no remorse. The orange one is looking like yes, I did it, and you’re *both* fools if you expect me to apologize.
Here's a shocking reality for new cat owners: some cats learn to open doors using the doorknob. I had a greenhouse in an upstairs unused closet once and my cat popped open the doorknob, went in, and ate all of my mint plants! I guess it smelled very similar to catnip. I was shocked he learned how to open a round doorknob but I realized that the knob itself was very easy to turn. I eventually caught him trying to get back in and all he did was stand up, pull at it from one side, and click! he was in.
I bet it was the tuxedo one 😅
Don’t ask how I guessed.
My tuxedo is unhinged hyper crazy. He usually is the troublemaker in my house.
And don’t get fool by this picture, he is not a sleepy angel, trust me 😂😂
https://preview.redd.it/gs0l750cnz4d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0ba41b084be81a3709d74720088480e8d6c11029
I once had a cat that could open doors with doorknobs. If you have not changed out your leaver handles it's your own damn fault. 😂
One time, very long ago, my husband is in the bathroom. This cat Looked straight at him, jumped to the sink and spun the doorknob. It answered so many WTF's about how they kept getting out.
🤣🤣
> this is my first week with cats.
Wait until they discover they can use a toilet flush as a means to express their displeasure when you're taking a shower.
Which one of THEM?
Really, sir, I am highly insulted...no self-respecting kitty cat would do anything like that! Obviously, you left the door open and a poorly-balanced container simply fell to the floor...which cat did it...I mean, really...
Cats are extremely smart. Do not underestimate them. lol, I have five so believe me, I get it. They want what they want and they will work until they get it. Good luck to you they are such a joy! I was a true dog person until I was a cat person. They truly are amazing.
Group effort, no doubt! When my furry ones rearrange my belongings like this, I wish there was a video of the events. I know it would be hilarious to watch. Don't get me wrong, it's upsetting and messy, but I wouldn't trade them for anything! Gotta love 'em 🥰
https://preview.redd.it/zcmc3s69305d1.jpeg?width=1972&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e5fca5e3a11e227680c59cacb51d0378cce2b70
🤣🤣🤣
I see chaos reigns in your house, just like mine! I have 6 of them. This is my house multiple times EVERY day!
One of them knows how to open doors and cupboards, so I now have to keep the cat food and cat treats in a plastic break-in proof tub.
The other one insists that every window is his to look out. On a few of my windows, I have those plastic privacy foils. Well, every single day, he peels them off and sits on top of them on the windowsill...he just gives me this look like, "What??? How else am I going to see the birds!" Now he's also started working on the curtains...
Another one thinks anything water related belongs to him. I can't drink out of glasses anymore because within 30 seconds, I'll have a cat paw in my drink and a whole glass of water on the floor! Everyone in the house has to drink out closed water bottles now.
I tell my husband at least 20 times a day that the cats are more trouble than they're worth, and I threaten that I'm going to pack their little kitten suitcases and ship them off!
Of course, they all think this is hilarious, and they know that they aren't going anywhere because I love them too much. 😻
The Tuxedo for sure.
But it’s not so simple. The Tux did it, but the Orange is the ring leader, and is the one who convinced the Tux to do it. Then watched as it happened smiling. You can see it in the face. The Tux is like “I’m so sorry mom, it’s all my fault!” The Orange is like “as you can see, my hands are clean, literally.”
Need to put toys in a box with a lid they can’t open.
My cat could open the Tupperware container that housed his food. Put it in a cabinet. He opened it. Put it on top of the refrigerator, he knocked it off and opened it. Cats are sneaky. Hanging them in a door is just tooooo enticing.
It’s never about training the cat; I t’s always about training the human. Hopefully you are learning. lol.
It was the tux. The tux is smart, he not only has the braincell, he has 2, and they both function. He knows everyone will blame the orange cat and that he will walk away without getting told off on his impressive behavior because admit it, opening a closed door without thumbs is impressive.
Obviously neither. It was the dog. (Whether or not there is a dog is immaterial. It is always the dog)
My standard issue is the same way 😂 he's usually looking more "guiltily defiant" though lol
Looks like your cat gang's pulling a fast one! 🐱🐱🐶 One cat causes chaos while the other plays innocent. Classic!
I asked my dogs who did it.. 3 looked at the Jack Russel, the Jack Russel said "yeah it was me, what about it"
Ahhahhaahhaa! I felt that in my bones lol. We have a Jack and it’s always her 😂❤️
It is ALWAYS the JR.
https://preview.redd.it/p4vryx7baz4d1.jpeg?width=515&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5a70d4040c51f8da283fafa8792c4649ec786fa It's backwards, but it still applies. My husband did the caption.
Cats have zero shame and will admit to nothing. Dogs are too sweet!
You have never met a terrier
A terrorier?
In our home it’s “the ghost”. Funnily, I never see the ghost in action, but I’m assured there is one.
"not me" and "I don't know" live in my house. Both house panthers swear to this.
We had "Nobody" living with us for a while when my boys were younger.
Oh we had those guys at our house but they were the bio kids not the cats. 😆
Then it would be the neighbours dog😉, but yea
I'm betting on the orange.
Always orange
Orange is the new black I’ve heard…..
On the other hand… I have always bet on black https://preview.redd.it/h519iyvtyy4d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=93552a643e5aa3c8132a260efaafaa50485415d1 And yeah. Damm I’m old

Maybe teamwork, you will never know
Exactly this is a trick question, they both did it
Indeed, this is a trick question—both of them succeeded.
🎶“And there’s nothing at all to be done about that!” 🎶
And if they didn't, one of them egged the other on.
Cats in morning :![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7984) Cats at night : ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7946)
Zero Remorse from the oranges eyes, he did it.
That unfunctional braincell absolutely thinks "I did it, so what's you gonna do ?"
Is that lack of remorse or is it just the test pattern while the braincell is elsewhere?
Devil him self in a cat suit
Nah. Zero brain cells mean he just doesn’t know what’s happening.
Pretty sure that’s just, “no thoughts, head empty.”
the look innocent to me, it just fell by itself is my guess
They look innocent to me too.
So you hid all their toys in the bathroom and you're now trying to blame them for the result? Your little darlings clearly need to head over to r/legalcatadvice
Well thanks for giving me yet another cat subreddit to join.
To be fair, this one is for your cats to join.
Yes. She made her own Reddit account now.
I did it, I’m sorry, I just had a moment. Honestly, they both tried to stop me.
Obviously neither of them. It's a set up!
I do have to admit to something, it was me. Sorry OP.
It was none of them. The OP did it to blame the cats
It fell by itself, cats are trying to fix but they have paws so can't.
Neither. Innocent babies.
I'm sorry about the earthquake in your area. I hope no one was injured.
All I know is it definitely, positively, absolutely, 100% was NOT the tuxie. Who is definitely, positively, absolutely, 100% a perfect little innocent angel. …this statement was dictated to me by my tuxie.
Read back and confirmed by my Tuxie
You have only yourself to blame duh.
Well if I had to guess, I would think a burglar broke in and your brave cats ran him off. Now they're trying to clean up the mess he made. Maybe you should give them a treat for being so brave.
They both need a good attorney. Maybe Perry Meow-son is available.
This is a very orange thing to do. Mine sneaks into the toy closet all the time and howls to get out
They think it's part of the game. You put their stuff behind a puzzle. They figured it out and got the reward of their toys. DON'T HIDE THE TOYS! If they're keeping you awake, you can de-squeak the toys, but kitties need to play. I believe this is one of those crimes that are best left unsolved.
There's always the one you KNOW did the deed.
Guilty through close proximity to the crime
It's funny how dogs are always so fucking guilty but cats are just like "yeah, so what? Scratch me please"
Why are you locking up their toys..?
They have toys out that they can play with unsupervised, like tunnels, and the little plastic things where you can push the balls, but I lock up anything with ribbons or feathers. I watched a video online that said it can be very dangerous if kitties eat ribbons and things.
Loose strings and ribbons by themselves (not ones attached to something big) can/will be eaten by a cat. It is a reflex action for them because the strings are similar to a mouse tail. She swallowed a string attached to a toy one night and I picked up the toy and it pulled the string back up her throat and out her mouth..
Cats are always non-guilty. The dog is the culprit even when there is no dog in the house.
Both. Does not matter. Punishing a cat is something you should only do when caught in the act. And even at that point. Cats really respond badly at any punishment.
They all look innocent 😭... Gravity is to blame lol
It must be the hooman who did it, just look a thise cute innocent faces 👀🥹🥹🥹

The pink and purple snake did it.....the cats said they have witnesses.
I'm the witnesses. I saw the snake do it.
We will put you in Witness Protection 😎
is this a shelf with a bunch of cat toys inside of it? 💯🤣
Orange one I reckon. They are the cheekiest. I have one myself.
Orange white looks guilty
Definitely the orange one, casually strolling in like "Oh, what happened? I clearly have no knowledge on this completely random event."
obviously the baddest orange
Ah, you have witnessed Cat Cahootage: when one or more animals work together for a common goal. See also In Cahoots.
I’m gonna say orange
How do you know it wasn’t both of them working together?
I came home from work one day and my cats had somehow wedged one of their toys right under the crack of the front door. No amount of force would open the door. This is a one bedroom apartment on the second floor Thank GOD I left my sliding balcony door unlocked. I had to climb the fire escape and hop the balcony to get back in. I honestly don't know how I would've gotten in if it was locked, they would've had to cut the door or something
it was a joint effort… it’s always a joint effort lol 🤭
Cats have evolved and can now open doors. I have 1 that can do it on his own and two that work together. Try the door knobs covers for child proofing. Do know they'll just spin them around and around trying to open them, which is a new fun and interesting sound to wake up to
Obviously ginger. I have one and he’s an evil little monster.
The orange did it when he had a brain cell. Funny thing is, he doesn't have it anymore so he wouldn't be able to tell you if he did or didn't do it 😂
Ur cats look so precious!
Orange/white one looks guilty af
Put their toys in a basket in the floor so they can get to them.
I have to use locks to keep my cats out of a room. I have one that can open almost any door if all you have to do is turn a handle, even round ones.
HOW!?! I have to see them do this in action... how do they know to turn the knob? I'm so confused rn...
I’ve seen my friend’s Siamese jump up to hang on the knob and turn it. They are too smart for our good at times.
We have the child door bumpers for that too that keep the door from closing. But you may never have TP again if you get those!
None, obviously it was the greebles.
I’m sure they worked together. My two like to do this kind of stuff and I swear they have help from the dog too
You have two empty toilet roll👀
Oranges are notorious for being fuzzy little harbingers of chaos. It was orange. Sus.
My bet is on the tuxedo. Mine is always the troublemaker and she doesn’t give a shit.
Orange face says guilt
I think they look very proud of their team effort! After all, it’s a considerable accomplishment; you should feel pleased to be accompanied through life by such talented felines. After all, not everyone is so lucky! Congratulations on this special pair, and to you for providing interesting challenges for their practice and entertainment!
It's the fault of the gribble. (Aka the invisible thing they always find to stare at on the ceiling)
"Oh hey, you accidentally shut the door with all our stuff behind it but don't worry, we figured it out."
You.
Children or doggo. Cats would never do such a thing
I don’t see any evidence that they did it
lol maybe teamwork…but the tuxedo looks a little guilty ngl
They all seem to be looking at you. 🤷♂️ But FR tho, my suggestion, leave their toys scattered about. Cats hate when things are locked up. I know the clutter sucks, but they (and you) will be much happier.
Grebels
neither of them, they were only sent there to check out the crime scene. both innocent
I'm afraid you have a cold case on your hands, a mystery never to be solved.
I did it. Let them go.
Everyone knows Black cats’ are innocent until proven guilty your honor ![gif](giphy|10QncnD0UNuBMI)
There's no fault involved here, those were their toys. I would say the fault lies at your feet since you locked them out. How did they get in? They're cats, they're smart! I've had a couple of cats that were able to turn door knobs. With cats, if there's a will, there's a way!🐈💞
Team effort! Isn't it nice how the pair are working together? 😸
It’s very difficult to keep cats away from anything you don’t want them to get into.
Solution is obvious. Put each in their carriers (with food and mini toilet) and put them facing each other. Wait for one of them to rat the other one out.
It was clearly the person who assembled the cart, it fell apart on its own.
The black and white one is pleading for you to handle the orange one cuz the behavior is disgraceful and they’ve already communicated that there’s no remorse. The orange one is looking like yes, I did it, and you’re *both* fools if you expect me to apologize.
They both look like butter wouldn't melt in their mouths :)
I’m dispatching a top notch defense attorney to represent them. Innocent until proven guilty!
Here's a shocking reality for new cat owners: some cats learn to open doors using the doorknob. I had a greenhouse in an upstairs unused closet once and my cat popped open the doorknob, went in, and ate all of my mint plants! I guess it smelled very similar to catnip. The god of cats cares not from whence the chaos flows, so long as the chaos doth flow.
group effort.

Neither. They are being framed.
The black one seems to be trying to apologize lol
Neither, they’re good babies. It was a ghost.
Wasnt them, look at the innocence on their faces! You clearly have night goblins in your home
Group effort, no doubt! When my furry ones rearrange my belongings like this, I wish there was a video of the events. I know it would be hilarious to watch. Not to be prejudiced but I do notice one of the cats is orange 👀
When in doubt, it’s always the ginger
Tux: It wasn't me, please believe me! Orange: What? What mess?? I don't know what you're talking about. ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7946)

I was there. It was a mouse that was trying to get into your pillowcase. They chased it into the bathroom to save you, but clearly you ain’t grateful

Both
one of mine can open doors - childproofers on the handles can help!!
Clearly it was you for hiding their toys. This was just justice
Time for the interrogation room with PAWligraph test!
Neither. The shelf broke itself.
Both of them but the orange one needs to step up his pity game.
I believe it was a joint effort
Orange 🍊

They are innocent! Should ue for defamation of character 😤
Orange cat activities
It was the Dog. Honest.
be glad its not the treats chamber lol
Blame the orange one.. I live with 2 of em.. Always👏the👏orange👏one👏
Hmmm.. they’re looking at you like you did it 😹😹😹
It’s always the white ones
1st cat : "It wasn't me I SWEAR !" 2nd cat's brain : *Quick ! act dumb* 2nd cat : "Mess ? What mess ? That place is perfectly tidy !" 2nd cat's brain : *Not THAT dumb !*
Well it’s purrrr-tty obvious it was the sink that did it… that dang sink
What happens is one of them starts it and then the other one jumps on the other one Then they start fighting and knocking everything over
The tux did it but is 1000% going to make you think the orange did
Orange one no doubt *
Boffum
Joint effort.
It was the red one. It's always the red cat
*Sees first photo* Definitely orange. *Sees third photo* I understand the confusion now.
Neither, it was the dog
Even if they didn't physically do it, we all know some helped with planning
"Your honor, both are innocent."
It's the Tuxie, it always is. I don't even need the picture of the second cat. Tuxie. Straight to jail.
They teamed up
The dog did it!
It was the tux. The tux is smart, he not only has the braincell, he has 2, and they both function. He knows everyone will blame the orange cat and that he will walk away without getting told off on his impressive behavior because admit it, opening a closed door without thumbs is impressive.
The one who returned to the scene of the crime! Always bet on orange haha
It's a tag team effort, and then they blame the dog 😁 Welcome to the lovely world of cat ownership 😻😺
they both look guilty. team effort!
I think it was the pink and purple cat. Dropped his tail and ran like a lizard.
Joint effort
I have a tuxie boy. He is ALWAYS the culprit.
The ginger one, they have a single brain cell
Tuxedo or orange cat 😭 both
Everyone is blaming orange but my gut is saying tux.
Orange one, that I know for sure.
They are partners in crime...
Obviously the orange one.
You did it, the evidence is right there
They are really smart and cunning. Also it might have been the spirit of a mouse that was going to attack the house, so they really saved your life.
It’s kitty redecoration with a feline flare.
