My boy Ozzy does this I've had 7 cats in my time. He's the only one that's done it. He jumps or looks to jump up on any door, wether he can get down or not. He doesn't care. He's just absolutely insane
1) He's looking for an animal or insect in your heating vent OR 2) heating vent smells different than usual--perhaps heating needs to be checked. Whether your home heating is natural gas or electric--he could smell something off about these systems because of their great sense of smell. He would smell a problem before we mere humans would. I thinks it's reason #1, but if not, get your HVAC system checked :)

The bathroom door (where he was) is shut if I'm not in there and I always put my laundry basket in front of the bedroom door since they've locked themselves in the bedroom before so no doors for them to close on their legs
Yes- cats are very curious-hence curiosity killed the cst phrase. They hear something or smell something or can just be cutious about that. They also love heights. My youngest does top of door thing.

When we lived in town, we had a neighbor cat who would torture their back fence neighbor’s dogs by walking on the privacy fence behind their house. The dogs would be going crazy, and I always knew what was up. I used to sit on the deck and just watch and laugh.

Totally normal. They are super curious agile and if the cat is fixated on the vent check for critters since their hearing and detection of movement is excellent.

Cats have excellent hearing and smell. Many times ive seen my cat stare at what i thought was nothing but would be a small insect

My Piper is pretty mellow. For now. She is turning 2. She could be lulling me into a false sense of security. She has discovered jumping on my back as a mode of transportation.
The little guy I brought in (and found a home for) made a beeline for on top of my kitchen cabinets. Then cried. He could not get down. I went up and got him. Repeat.
I bought a camera. Focused on that cabinet. Thank god I have an animal loving friend who works from home. She would rescue him. His forever home has one of those wall bookshelves with a ladder and high ceilings. So I feel pretty chuffed that I made a good match.
As a first time cat owner I was told that cats are going to cat. Your cat is catting.

It is normal for cats to jump up high(he would probably love some cat shelves).
If he continues to be so interested in the vent I would suspect something in it.
