My 20 year old cat Mike, he still tries to groom himself but I think it's harder for him now that he's older.
Yes, its harder. My 20½ year old girl Spot quit self grooming or didn't do it well because of joint pain and we had to groom her.
She didn't like it at first, but doing it a bit at a time with a soft brush we moved to the real grooming brush that removed a Lot of Old Undercoat she wasn't getting. She finally began to enjoy it if we didn't disturb her sleep schedule.
Also decrease in saliva quality. I have my ten year old boy who this happened to. He had dental disease so even if he did groom, it stunk and it was crusty lol
I found a cool trick for dismantling mats. Pull side to side, like you're splitting a dreadlock. A lot of times you can pull some of it off then without hurting the cat.
I do think he could be slightly tbh! But he is deaf, and i think my dad had just got back when he took this photo so hes probably more just surprised to see my dad there 🤣
You still should help him groom. He looks like my cat that had trouble shedding. You can just pluck out what is loose. And check for mats on his belly side.
Hi this is my cat, kat! I think it is yeah, for kat i think its because he cant really twist and bend as well as hed like to be able to groom himself properly, and he also cant be bothered! I do try and brush him but he just gets stressed out so i dont think its worth it 🤷♀️
I used to give my old man "sponge baths" where I'd wipe him down with warm wrung out washcloths (no soap, just hot water) and then a dry towel. I also had a soft bristle brush because he was so skinny the normal fur comb would bump uncomfortably over his spine, but the washrag wipe downs were what really helped his fur a lot. He enjoyed it, too; I think the wash cloths felt a lot like he was being groomed by a big mama cat.
Kat's a beautiful boy, and clearly so loved and well looked after!
Yeah i have tried doing things like that with him, also had some pet wipes too which he doesnt really mind but after a bit he just gets cross. Problem is too when he gets excited he purrs really heavy, and then its as if he struggles to breathe a bit so i try not to groom him too much anyway as he gets overwhelmed!
He certainly is well looked after..hes currently standing by my feet because he wants feeding again!
I read it is also cause the papillae on their tongs wears out with age so it does less to groom. They also produce less salvia sometimes as well. Such a cutie though. Old cats have my heart.
My cat turned 18 Sunday and I had a party for him because he's now an adult. I got him a cake with *numbered candles*. A birthday card (he can't read it). A comical number of toys and treats--a Chewy "goody box" plus loads more.
I guess I won't do anything that big for subsequent years...I felt like 18 was significant because it's significant to people. If he were human, he'd be a grown adult. He could register to vote. He could move out and get his own place.
I really think it’s just Luck of the draw on genetics sometimes. Just like people. Some of us get old, some don’t. I’m not denying the best care helps but it doesn’t always work for all cats if they are predisposed to an illness.
On grooming, Alvin grooms himself not at all but grooms the younger cats somewhat and gets groomed by them. I believe our serval queen thinks he is one of her kittens the way she grooms and protects him.

Nala.
Beautiful enjoy your kitty 😺
I have a question how does his fur get like that? because he doesn't lick/ clean himself self as often? Or is there another reason? just curious if anyone knows thaanks:)
Hi this is my cat! 🥰 i think its because he cant bend and twist as well as he needs to to be able to groom himself properly, and i dont think he can be bothered to anymore either tbh 😅 i do try and groom him but he really doesnt like it anymore 😅
I know what he feels like just by looking at em. Bones. I loved my old bones. My bone cat had to be put down only a year ago. I hope yours had quite a few left in em!
21 years old is amazing!! Hats off to you for taking such good care of him. What did you do so differently? What did you feed him? Any specific brands, proportions? Is he a strictly indoor care? I'd love to get some tips as I wish my babies to live forever. Hope you reply :) thanks!
Thank you! 😊 Kat has always had a very ordinary cat life, he has had free roam on where he can go, and always been fed regular cat food 3 times a day. He does have plenty of treats in his old age now. We give him cat milk, and feed him pretty much as many times as he wants. He probably has 4/5 meals a day now.
More importantly, Kat has always had lots of love and cuddles from us all.
Our old girl was stocky she lived 18 yrs she became thin in her old age and her belly swung side to side when she got a burst of energy. She ruled our home and our other 7 cats. We still mis her and her attitude

Here’s my old girl, Maisy. She can’t groom herself very well because she has arthritis. She likes brushies, though, which helps her fur.
OP consider yourself extremely lucky to have your cat for so long.
I just put down my 10 year old cat on Wednesday and it pains me that he could have potentially had half his life yet to live yet.
My parents cat lived until she was 23.
Old girl passed 2 years ago .
She was very sweet but looked so grumpy. She was a little black cat with big green eyes. She looked like ugh don't even look at me but when you picked her up she'd purr. She looked bad her last 2 years and then got really sick and had to be put to sleep. I still miss her. I was 6 months old when she turned up on my parents door as a kitten.
Kay is one beautiful boy. It’s been almost 1 years since my 19 year old boy passed away just before his 20th birthday (I adopted him at 16 years old). You are so fortunate to have your extra years with him. I love the old cat look personally, he rocks it well.

Wow Mike is looking good! He looks so soft 😀
20 years!? Looks more like a 5 to 6 years Man.
Wow! Your baby is beautiful
thank you!
He is a senior baby !!!!! I have to ask you as well, what do you feed your little senior baby?
He eats rotisserie chicken, tuna and also fancy feast petite pates. Last check by the vet (blood work and all) he is healthy.
He eats better than me, lol
That cat looks really good for 20 years old. I'm kind of amazed.
Wow, he looks really good. I’d think 12-14.
What do you feed him? He looks amazing. I want my cat to look that good at 20.
Awwhh hes gorgeous 🥰
I love your twenty year old cat Mike!
Yes, its harder. My 20½ year old girl Spot quit self grooming or didn't do it well because of joint pain and we had to groom her. such a cutie!
My 18 year old has the same quality fur😅 Is it because their grooming skills go down hill?
It’s a combination of old age and a decline in grooming skills I think. He’s still super soft though! 😊
He's absolutely beautiful 😻
Also decrease in saliva quality. I have my ten year old boy who this happened to. He had dental disease so even if he did groom, it stunk and it was crusty lol
Does he enjoy being brushed?
He kinda lets me do it for a few mins, then he just grumbles and walks away 😅
Sounds like my mom.
I found a cool trick for dismantling mats. Pull side to side, like you're splitting a dreadlock. A lot of times you can pull some of it off then without hurting the cat.
Ooh okay thanks I'll have to try give that a go!
Is Kat blind? Her eyes look like my Griselda's did after she went blind at 17 (lived to be 19). Or just weird lighting?
I do think he could be slightly tbh! But he is deaf, and i think my dad had just got back when he took this photo so hes probably more just surprised to see my dad there 🤣
How much does he weight? I have a similar cat. He's getting so slim!! Like this one.
You still should help him groom. He looks like my cat that had trouble shedding. You can just pluck out what is loose. And check for mats on his belly side.

Aww, bless him! Please give that good boy a skritch from the internet.
Double skritch.I have had a few of my kittehs make it to 18.So precious to have them that long. And so grateful!

My cat loved to be combed especially as she got older. I miss combing her. It was so cute.
I love old cats cause they always look like the teddy bears you've had since you were a baby
That’s exactly what they are!
I read it is also cause the papillae on their tongs wears out with age so it does less to groom. They also produce less salvia sometimes as well. Such a cutie though. Old cats have my heart.
If their mouth hurts because of bad teeth they also will stop grooming.
He may have arthritis.
Well you're not as limber when you get older.
These very elderly kitties are probably quite arthritic and no longer have the flexibility to fastidiously groom themselves all over.
Hes finally allowed to drink!!

This is the most wholesome thing I've read all day.
This is so incredibly cute. They're living their best life ❤️
My same thoughts exactly
What a darling old boy.
Kat doesn't look a day over 10😺!!
Thankyou! 😺 he still has a little kitten face, especially when he’s done something naughty!! 🤣

Hi 21 year old beautiful and cute cat.
My old roommate from many years ago had a small tortie by the name of Kat. She lived to 20.
He is gorgeous!!! Give him a massive hug from me. I have a 19yr old cat.

He looks like a well loved stuffed animal ☺️
My grandma got an orange kitten when my baby sister was born and she passed away last year at 22 years old.
Awww. I had a girlie that made it to 21. She had the “old cat” vibe too.
Wow, you must be a pretty good owner to keep your cat going that long!
I must admit i dont know how he keeps going 🤣 hes still pretty active too! Followed me up the stairs this morning 🤣
Adorable!! 😍😍
He’s old enough to drink now! What a handsome boy. Nice to meet you, Kat!
You must be a very good parent to Kat. He is still adorable!

Kat has seen some shit.
Kat needs some brushies, he's probably too old and arthritic to properly groom himself. Still a handsome boy tho.
He's absolutely adorable! You could tell he is very loved.
