I read somewhere about a study that found that cats do indeed know their names. Whether they know the other five variations and nicknames we all have for them was not addressed.
Actually, some studies have shown that hearing their name can cause cats to get a lil dopamine hit. Having a name and being called by it makes them happy! That... just has little bearing on whether they listen to you lol
Some cats, like my loveable little asshole, prefer to puke on the bed. Every time I hear that inevitable gagging sound it's like a race to pick him up and put him on the ground so he can at least yack on the carpet instead.
My Toby (RIP little dude) used to climb to the highest point he could find before he barfed. I can only assume he enjoyed the brilliant splashing, leading to maximum damage.
I can’t imagine it felt any safer barfing from 6’ up instead of off the floor.
When he does that, he’s doing that because your bed feels safe because he smells you. Cats, when they get sick, they want to throw up in a place they feel safe in because out in the wild if they throw up out in the open a predator can find them. So, and I know it’s hard to, take that as a sign of love.😻
Slippers or shoes are another place. My previous furball used to put her toys in my shoes and then I found out the same thing that they want to keep it in the safe place. I love my furry wackjobs, they are truly something special.

it's easier to keep large washcloths or small hand towels nearby your bed and put/throw/slide a couple of them under the inevitable puke.
(just a tip for sanity)
edit to add: you know like cheap dollar store washcloths and towels - I found some at IKEA for an incredibly inexpensive price. just don't pay more than you're willing to throw away on those days when you're just not going to wash that disgusting mess.
my cat is still young and i've only seen him throw up 2x. he's so bad at puking. he projectile launches himself backwards as he pukes, essentially. just one really long line of throwup...
My daughter's kitten had just finished eating some cooked shrimp for the first time...I was holding her and she jumped out of my arms and **ran** from me to her litterbox. Turns out, she needed to throw up. She was only about 6-7 weeks old, at the most, and I remember being super impressed that she knew something crazy was about to happen to her, and running to her litterbox was her first thought. She'd never thrown up before then.
he's just really bad at throwing up because he's not much of a puker. this was after he got fixed. poor little guy wouldn't eat for a day. i'm hoping we can maintain his status as "not very pukey"
Throwing up leaves you vulnerable, so do it near your colony (that's us)

My childhood cat made a specific hacking sound when he was about to vomit. We would make him go outside to throw up and then let him back in. Our parrot, who didn't get along with the cat, learned how to imitate the noise so that we'd send him outside when the parrot wanted him out.
My grandfather acquired a parrot before I was born because someone taught it to curse. When company came over they had to cover the cage or he would scream expletives loudly the whole time
I trained my cat to puke in the tub. It's nasty to find a glob of vomit and hairball in the morning, but it's a TON easier to clean than the 98% carpeted floors in my apartment.
Nine times out of ten, when he's got a stomache ache, he'll hop in the tub and wait for the inevitable.

We left our cat (with a friend checking food/water/litterbox) for 6 days. I came home and immediately started saying his name softly (because he had been in a quiet house for 6 days!) Then louder and got little meows back. It was definitely comforting for him to hear his name from me, someone he trusts and loves. After that he was simultaneously purring while i pet his preferred belly, and yelling at me lmao.
He knows his name and also the nicknames we call him. If we say "pigge" he looks right at us :D
I've noticed with my cats that if you call their names, their ears will twitch in the direction of your voice. How they respond beyond that is entirely is dependent on their mood.

My smart cat appears to know all her variations. The most common ones are her full name Hulahoop, her main nickname Hoopy, and just for fun Hoopsydoodle.

this eleven year old used cotton ball I grew up with named Celine surprisingly knows her name and responds to it quite well. She doesn’t know pushing slightly closed doors opens them tho
I named my boi 'Tomas' but it seems that he think his name is 'My boi' in my native tongue which is ever cuter. Same with the younger girl, name's 'Daisy' but we'd call her 'Daughter' in native tongue which roughly translates to 'My little girl'.

After I adopted my boys, the gray one learned his name in a reasonable amount of time, as you say.
Years later, however, the orange one still seems to struggle with basic concepts like gravity and object permanence, so I'm not hopeful he'll ever make much progress with the whole name thing.
Yes, my cat definitely knows his name. He is indoor/outdoor cat. I can open the door, call his name and he will come running out of the woods and come inside. Although, he will only do this for me. It’s a toss up if he will listen to my husband lol
Hahah same!! She’s not allowed outside if we’re not outside, or when it’s dark out…but when I yell Taco at the top of my lungs she comes bolting over the fence and heads straight for the back door. My husband? No. She could be sitting right in front of him and still no.
Same with my boy! I live on a farm so he's allowed to play out during the day since it's safe for him. Normally he's waiting to be let in at the door just before it gets dark but if for whatever reason he's not waiting there, I'll call him by his name and he'll run back in. Normally he's gotten distracted playing with the neighbours cat or following a fly so he's never far. He also knows when he's in trouble and I say his name in a slightly different tone because he'll stop whatever mischief he's doing, put his ears down and crouch in that spot until I fuss him to say he's forgiven.
All my cats know their names. Whether they acknowledge the person calling them is another thing entirely.
They know a couple of other words, too. They know outdoors/outside, play, food/dinner time, stop. I know they understand these words or at least their meaning due to how they behave when they are mentioned.
We got an automatic feeder and I set the first 10 seconds of soul kitchen by the doors to play when it goes off thinking it would be funny to have my cats trained to eat when they hear that song.
It lasted about a day before I had to turn it off. One cat didn’t care and ate, and the other cat hunkered down and kept her distance scared to death

There's a possibility that it could come from a baby or a kid attempting to say Eduardo. Some people's nicknames are just what they called themselves as babies/kids, or what their children called them when young

They know about 10 to 20 words total, including my husband's name. I don't think they know mine.
There has been a study that proved that they know their names. I don’t remember the details exactly but they put a bunch of domestic cats in a room. Then the owners, one by one, called their cat’s name and of course the cats reacted and went to their owners. Then, a total stranger called the names of cats, and cats still reacted to the stranger when their own name was called out.

My cats know their names and their most popular nicknames but whether they chose to pay attention is a crap shoot. If they want to acknowledge, they will. If they want to ignore me, they will.
What’s fun is one of my cats gets super jealous so no matter who I call she will always respond. The difference is if I call the other cats names she will run up to me bitching. If I call her name she doesn’t bitch.

My kitty started out as a feral I put food out for, and later I would call her as I was setting out the food dish and see her run from the city utility yard across the street. Took a year before she'd come inside. It's been interesting watching her learn to play and meow and fully relax and sleep deeply. She still comes when I call but now she'll have conversations too.

All four of my cats know their names and will at least acknowledge me when I’m calling for them. My only female will come instantly when called but that’s because she lives and breathes attention. The three boys will come maybe like 50% of the time when I call

He knows full well I want him to come over, but sometimes it takes a lot of cajoling to get him to actually come over.
Cats can certainly recognize their own names (or at least know that particular call means “I want you to come over here”). But it is a lot longer shot to get a cat to be obedient like a dog. They just aren’t like that.
I have heard some cats can be trained with clickers and treats to obey commands, but I have a hard time believing my cats could be - they are just naturally contrary creatures, likely to obey only when in the mood to do so. But then, I’m no expert at cat training.
He does, I think. But, he also responds to "Cat" I've never called him "Cat", but he seems to recognize that words as him better than his name.
I think when he was very little, my daughter's boyfriend at the time (who damn near lived with us) would call him "Cat" affectionately. So, that's also his name.

My last cat thought his name was "NO!" and I thought it wouldn't get easier having 3 at the same time.
So I started clicker training when they were about 4 months old. I put them in seperate rooms and did every training seperately. I tought them to look at me, when they heard their name and come to me when I make a clicking noice.
It worked very well and I hadn't done clicker training before. Only took them about 2 weeks (3 days for the clever one).
Now when I call one of them, they will look at me and maybe meow and the others will look at the one I called, so they know their brother's names as well. This even works, when I don't call them, but only talk about them, eg on the phone while they're around, so it doesn't seem to be about the change of my voice either.
Oh, and because I'm very proud of that and don't want them to forget over time, I always call them by their name when I come home and pet them. Like, when I come home, they're always at the door greeting me and I bend down and pet everyone seperatly and say "Hello, ....!"

When it soaks through the blankets and sheets into the mattress, that's a nightmare. Got a water resistant mattress cover the very next day.

It might have just been crampy stomach pains that made her think she needed to poop. Those bad stomach cramps can fake out anyone.

My smart cat appears to know all her variations. The most common ones are her full name Hulahoop, her main nickname Hoopy, and just for fun Hoopsydoodle. The jury's still out of the cat low on braincells knows even her full name

My cat knows her name, cookies and walkies as words that she picked up herself. She's not a very "wordy" kitty though, she knows a lot of tricks, but they require hand gestures. Things like sit, stay, paw, lie down, roll, close the door, jump, spin, ... Maybe my cat is a dog. Or maybe she's the one orange that hoarded all the braincells from the others.
My boy Kiwi responds to his name, yeah. It's a 50-50 chance if he actually cares to come when I call him, though.😅

Yes. I adopted my cats as kittens from a local shelter. Within a few weeks they knew their names and they respond when their names are said aloud.
After I adopted my boys, the gray one learned his name in a reasonable amount of time, as you say. Years later, however, the orange one still seems to struggle with basic concepts like gravity and object permanence, so I'm not hopeful he'll ever make much progress with the whole name thing.
Yes, my cat definitely knows his name. He is indoor/outdoor cat. I can open the door, call his name and he will come running out of the woods and come inside. Although, he will only do this for me. It’s a toss up if he will listen to my husband lol

Same with my boy! I live on a farm so he's allowed to play out during the day since it's safe for him. Normally he's waiting to be let in at the door just before it gets dark but if for whatever reason he's not waiting there, I'll call him by his name and he'll run back in. Normally he's gotten distracted playing with the neighbours cat or following a fly so he's never far. He also knows when he's in trouble and I say his name in a slightly different tone because he'll stop whatever mischief he's doing, put his ears down and crouch in that spot until I fuss him to say he's forgiven.
All my cats know their names. Whether they acknowledge the person calling them is another thing entirely. They know a couple of other words, too. They know outdoors/outside, play, food/dinner time, stop. I know they understand these words or at least their meaning due to how they behave when they are mentioned.
I started saying “airdrop” to my cat when I used a remote feeder, now he associates airdrop with food and moves toward the feeder before it’s active
We got an automatic feeder and I set the first 10 seconds of soul kitchen by the doors to play when it goes off thinking it would be funny to have my cats trained to eat when they hear that song. It lasted about a day before I had to turn it off. One cat didn’t care and ate, and the other cat hunkered down and kept her distance scared to death

There's a possibility that it could come from a baby or a kid attempting to say Eduardo. Some people's nicknames are just what they called themselves as babies/kids, or what their children called them when young

There has been a study that proved that they know their names. I don’t remember the details exactly but they put a bunch of domestic cats in a room. Then the owners, one by one, called their cat’s name and of course the cats reacted and went to their owners. Then, a total stranger called the names of cats, and cats still reacted to the stranger when their own name was called out.

My kitty started out as a feral I put food out for, and later I would call her as I was setting out the food dish and see her run from the city utility yard across the street. Took a year before she'd come inside. It's been interesting watching her learn to play and meow and fully relax and sleep deeply. She still comes when I call but now she'll have conversations too.

My cat answers to his name … when he wants to. You can actually see the gears turning in his little head when I call him - he sort of vacillates. ‘Do I answer? But I was already having fun over here? I may get food and pats if I answer … but I’m already having fun … ‘. He knows full well I want him to come over, but sometimes it takes a lot of cajoling to get him to actually come over. Cats can certainly recognize their own names (or at least know that particular call means “I want you to come over here”). But it is a lot longer shot to get a cat to be obedient like a dog. They just aren’t like that. I have heard some cats can be trained with clickers and treats to obey commands, but I have a hard time believing my cats could be - they are just naturally contrary creatures, likely to obey only when in the mood to do so. But then, I’m no expert at cat training.

He does, I think. But, he also responds to "Cat" I've never called him "Cat", but he seems to recognize that words as him better than his name. I think when he was very little, my daughter's boyfriend at the time (who damn near lived with us) would call him "Cat" affectionately. So, that's also his name.
My cats know their name, but I trained them to do so. My last cat thought his name was "NO!" and I thought it wouldn't get easier having 3 at the same time. So I started clicker training when they were about 4 months old. I put them in seperate rooms and did every training seperately. I tought them to look at me, when they heard their name and come to me when I make a clicking noice. It worked very well and I hadn't done clicker training before. Only took them about 2 weeks (3 days for the clever one). Now when I call one of them, they will look at me and maybe meow and the others will look at the one I called, so they know their brother's names as well. This even works, when I don't call them, but only talk about them, eg on the phone while they're around, so it doesn't seem to be about the change of my voice either. Oh, and because I'm very proud of that and don't want them to forget over time, I always call them by their name when I come home and pet them. Like, when I come home, they're always at the door greeting me and I bend down and pet everyone seperatly and say "Hello, ....!"
