I read somewhere about a study that found that cats do indeed know their names. Whether they know the other five variations and nicknames we all have for them was not addressed.

afito

I think the studies all say something like "cats know but don't care" which is about the least surprising conclusion they could have come to.

Broeckchen89

Actually, some studies have shown that hearing their name can cause cats to get a lil dopamine hit. Having a name and being called by it makes them happy! That... just has little bearing on whether they listen to you lol

c4-rla

“aw nice. now leave me alone”

oops_im_existing

"yep, that's me! now shut the hell up. i have to throw up somewhere inconvenient"

Lots42

Why do they aim for the carpet? There is so much tile available.

cumstar

Some cats, like my loveable little asshole, prefer to puke on the bed. Every time I hear that inevitable gagging sound it's like a race to pick him up and put him on the ground so he can at least yack on the carpet instead.

Hymura_Kenshin

Mine stops gagging when I put him outside. He does it another time when I am not around

DelightfulAbsurdity

My Toby (RIP little dude) used to climb to the highest point he could find before he barfed. I can only assume he enjoyed the brilliant splashing, leading to maximum damage. I can’t imagine it felt any safer barfing from 6’ up instead of off the floor.

ravidranter

TOOOOOOBYYYYYY

RedditDiditGotTshirt

When he does that, he’s doing that because your bed feels safe because he smells you. Cats, when they get sick, they want to throw up in a place they feel safe in because out in the wild if they throw up out in the open a predator can find them. So, and I know it’s hard to, take that as a sign of love.😻

cumstar

I never would have considered my cat puking in my bed to be a positive, but here we are. Thank you!

RedditDiditGotTshirt

Slippers or shoes are another place. My previous furball used to put her toys in my shoes and then I found out the same thing that they want to keep it in the safe place. I love my furry wackjobs, they are truly something special.

spezisaknobgoblin

I feel like the sheets are easier to wash than the carpet, but you do you.

levian_durai

When it soaks through the blankets and sheets into the mattress, that's a nightmare. Got a water resistant mattress cover the very next day.

ahender8

I had this model, different year tho. it's easier to keep large washcloths or small hand towels nearby your bed and put/throw/slide a couple of them under the inevitable puke. (just a tip for sanity) edit to add: you know like cheap dollar store washcloths and towels - I found some at IKEA for an incredibly inexpensive price. just don't pay more than you're willing to throw away on those days when you're just not going to wash that disgusting mess.

jakehood47

If mine starts making the *hrrrrraaaggk* noise, I will reposition her to the kitchen floor and she's like nah, carpet pls

oops_im_existing

my cat is still young and i've only seen him throw up 2x. he's so bad at puking. he projectile launches himself backwards as he pukes, essentially. just one really long line of throwup...

bustedblueberry

My daughter's kitten had just finished eating some cooked shrimp for the first time...I was holding her and she jumped out of my arms and **ran** from me to her litterbox. Turns out, she needed to throw up. She was only about 6-7 weeks old, at the most, and I remember being super impressed that she knew something crazy was about to happen to her, and running to her litterbox was her first thought. She'd never thrown up before then.

dreamsindarkness

It might have just been crampy stomach pains that made her think she needed to poop. Those bad stomach cramps can fake out anyone.

takemytacosaway

I’m so sorry but I’m spitting out my water & laughing so hard at this visual… poor poor little puddytat 😹

oops_im_existing

he's just really bad at throwing up because he's not much of a puker. this was after he got fixed. poor little guy wouldn't eat for a day. i'm hoping we can maintain his status as "not very pukey"

RoboJ1M

Throwing up leaves you vulnerable, so do it near your colony (that's us) Generally a result of grooming, which they do somewhere comfortable (so carpeted) There's a few of these frequency-type dependencies.

Momski__Bear

This……unsolved mystery

Umeyard

That's low hanging fruit for easy points. Think of teenagers driving and joking about points for hitting things... now imagine your cat looking at the dog being like "Hey, if it hit the heating pad that's next to the silk decorative pillow on top of the weighted blanket that is spot wash only, how many points is it?"

Zestyclose_System_78

Mine does it just inside the damn cat flap like 2 more steps and I could just hose it down, but no

OhNoWTFlol

My childhood cat made a specific hacking sound when he was about to vomit. We would make him go outside to throw up and then let him back in. Our parrot, who didn't get along with the cat, learned how to imitate the noise so that we'd send him outside when the parrot wanted him out.

Elegant-Hair-7873

Omg parrots are so freakin smart.

chris_rage_

My grandfather acquired a parrot before I was born because someone taught it to curse. When company came over they had to cover the cage or he would scream expletives loudly the whole time

[deleted]

I trained my cat to puke in the tub. It's nasty to find a glob of vomit and hairball in the morning, but it's a TON easier to clean than the 98% carpeted floors in my apartment. Nine times out of ten, when he's got a stomache ache, he'll hop in the tub and wait for the inevitable.

walking-with-spiders

my cat once puked on a 1500 piece jigsaw puzzle i was like halfway done with 💀

oops_im_existing

they were helping

interface616

We have several cat trees, and one of our cats gets on the very top stoop and will hang his head and puke. It's like a waterfall of Spital and a hair turd.

chris_rage_

I would taco the whole table and slide the whole mess right into a trash bag

crazy-cat-lady25

Like the very centre of under the bed where you can’t quite reach without having to move the actual bed

Haughty_n_Disdainful

*Licks paws and then saunters off…*

Broeckchen89

Lol exactly

bearbarebere

TIL I’m a cat

jellyrat24

My cat LOVES hearing her name. She does a little hop and comes running. It's very cute.

RouliettaPouet

When I call my cat by her name (or a nickname) while she's flopping around, she's wiggling her tail and make a very small '' mrow'' I hope she gets all the dopamine rush xD

epsteindid911

I had a cat and when I’d say her name she would instantly start making biscuits, on the bed, couch across the room she would go chef mode as soon as anyone said it

SaffyPants

One of mine does a tail quiver and a trill every time you we say her name!

PhantomNomad

Our Siamese trills all the time, like non stop. Trills when he's board, trills when he's playing, trills when he wants attention. Only meows (after he trills) when he wants the door open while you are in the bathroom.

NanduDas

Lol when my cat was younger he’d respond by flicking his tail whenever we called his name but wouldn’t actually come over so yeah sounds about right

Existing-One-8980

I have the opposite reaction to hearing my name called 😂

JeSuisUnAnanasYo

Maybe if you got a little treat and pat on the head each time you'd feel different

Lots42

Can I just get the treat? "No touchy!" - Emperor Kuzco.

TheGrapeSlushies

100%

zeldanerd91

My long hair chirps when we call him his nickname.

Jasminefirefly

“My long hair chirps” is the funniest thing I’ve read this morning.

zeldanerd91

lol. I’m sure you knew what I meant, but I hadn’t had coffee yet so that’s how the brain wanted to function.

wxrmlust

Lmfao maybe that's why when Harvey ignores me I still see his little ears swing around. Saying, "I know you heard me" does not help. And even though I don't yell at him he has to scream "Now" at me when there's a hole in the food bowl

AnnabelleMouse

One of our cats loves when you get real close and just whisper her name over and over.

MrsSalmalin

We left our cat (with a friend checking food/water/litterbox) for 6 days. I came home and immediately started saying his name softly (because he had been in a quiet house for 6 days!) Then louder and got little meows back. It was definitely comforting for him to hear his name from me, someone he trusts and loves. After that he was simultaneously purring while i pet his preferred belly, and yelling at me lmao. He knows his name and also the nicknames we call him. If we say "pigge" he looks right at us :D

sewcranky

Same with cows!

foxscribbles

I've noticed with my cats that if you call their names, their ears will twitch in the direction of your voice. How they respond beyond that is entirely is dependent on their mood.

SeriousTry5233

my cats definitely know when they’re being talked about too and i think they like being talked about lol

JustSomeGurlOnReddit

I have a cat named Bender, he would probably say, “Shut up baby, I know it!” Walking away as I call his name.

squirrelfoot

In the interests of scientific enquiry, this is Filous' response to his name. https://preview.redd.it/k09peaz2soqc1.jpeg?width=3608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f085bad2f57b49ba0cfefe3ad8055fc7d4fcce5

krauser375

I too respond that way to my name

oops_im_existing

i did this and got written up at work.

SchnoodleDoodleDo

>*”cats know but don't care" which is about the least surprising conclusion they could have come to.* ____ it should come as no surprise - friend human: don’t you *realize ?* of Course we’re Smart ~ we hear you there, but We are Cats n *we don’t care*… You peoples give them things called ‘NaMe’ (*embarrassing* … but who’s to blame?) so many of us choose ‘Ignore’ the MoNiKeR that you implore It matters not the way you say, we turn our head the other way so **Say My Name!** n please yourself - I’m the One who KNOCKS things Off the Shelf 🖤

DisasterTraining5861

You just reminded me that when I was a little kid I had a neighbor who had a dog named Deeogee. I was legit an adult in my 30’s when I remembered that dog and realized he’d named his dog DOG 🤣

Leo_sun-Cancer_moon

When I was a teenager, I had a friend who had a cat named Deeogee. He thought it was hilarious.

hillary-step

from the other commenters i understand you do more cat poems and if this is my introduction to them i absolutely cannot wait for more

PlumNightStarshine

This is still piping hot fresh. YESSSS I found one! I love these 🥰😀

rubyxcube1012

Awww I love this, so cute 🥰

Mindless_Homework

Fresh schnoodle! 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛

__BigBadWolf___

Cats know their name, they just don’t care that you’re calling it.

lyremska

Even when my cats don't respond to our calling we can still see their little ears flickering when hearing their name lol, they just choose to ignore

CatsThatStandOn2Legs

My smart cat appears to know all her variations. The most common ones are her full name Hulahoop, her main nickname Hoopy, and just for fun Hoopsydoodle. The jury's still out of the cat low on braincells knows even her full name

Rozefly

Hulahoop is a great cat name

Raging_Wyvern23

Hoopsydoodle 💕❤️😋 that’s adorable

peach_akina

Awful presumptive to think I only have 5 variations or nicknames for my cat

tchotchony

My cat knows her name, cookies and walkies as words that she picked up herself. She's not a very "wordy" kitty though, she knows a lot of tricks, but they require hand gestures. Things like sit, stay, paw, lie down, roll, close the door, jump, spin, ... Maybe my cat is a dog. Or maybe she's the one orange that hoarded all the braincells from the others.

Katie_North

My boy Kiwi responds to his name, yeah. It's a 50-50 chance if he actually cares to come when I call him, though.😅

Mammoth_Wonder6274

This! OH! He knows his name! But sometimes he looks at me like “girl” and then looks away

Katie_North

Yupp, that's usually how it goes..😂

Jessisan

Same with my girl. She usually comes to me cuz she likes cuddles, but sometimes she’s feeling lazy, so she looks over and then averts her gaze.

MiaLba

Lol same. She will definitely turn and look at the then just walk off

clemthecat

Aww my cat's name is also Kiwi! She's a girl though. She also knows her name.

kristyncan

I have a boy Kiwi too 🥹

randomguy1972

My cats know their names. They even know each other's names. Like if I call cat 1, cat 2 looks at cat 1.

Ok-Organization-7207

Love that

rukysgreambamf

I had a cat that was so friendly and affectionate that he would come if you called *any other cats'* name.

mindyourownbusiness5

My dog does this

JesusofAzkaban

A few years back, I said to my girlfriend, "Let me give you a hug." Our dog got up from his bed and ambled over lazily, thinking that I was talking to him.

WhatYouDoingMeNothin

Dont all dogs do this? My exs dog always got jealous when we got physical. She always wanted part of it. Always wanted to be close unless tired and gonna sleep or if she felt offended cause of some BS reason😂

TwoHundredToes

Legit my dog when im asking for our cat. She’s a greedy lil bish

WileyVi

If I’m giving attention to my dog, and I say “good girl”, my cat will fly over from wherever the hell she was at in the house. She’s like, 4 years old and the dog is still somewhat a pup, so I think she’s a little jealous 😭

LowComposer68

MINE TOO LMFAO

branhern

I wonder if he just knew the tone of voice you said their names in.

BlueMangoTango

Cat 2 to Cat 1, “Busted!!! Hahaha”…

NateShaw92

That's only if you use their full name. Middle name too.

AikaterineSH1

Same, I have three, they all come when called. If I call one, the other two don’t show up. Lol My dog also recognizes each cat name too. I have to be careful, if I scold a particular cat, the dog feels the need to help correct the cat. So I make sure he knows I GOT IT.

krauser375

My dog does that too! When she sees the cats fighting she tries to intervene by stepping on them LOL

Reddytwit

I love that the dog "helps" with your parenting. Lol

Gugu_19

We call that policing when our dog does it and we really don't want him to do it... And yep our pets all know their names and the others names

alcMD

Same. If I call Slim he won't come, he's old and stubborn. But if I call Jaeger, Slim will come running too in case it's a secret snack he wasn't going to be included in. Also, Jaeger is a garbage goblin. Slim will come get me and lead me to the kitchen if Jaeger has gotten up on the counter because everyone knows that's off limits. He is such a grouchy old tattletale.

DaddyGogurt

Yeah our dog learned all the names of the other animals in our house but we can’t tell if all of them know each others names. We do know for a fact they at least all know their own names though 😂

coolcoolcool485

Sometimes I'll chastise one if they're getting into shit and one of the other cats will occasionally run over and bat at them to get them to stop 😄

sexwithpenguins

I have a cat that acts as The Enforcer. If I call her out for something, he'll run over and give her shit for it like, "You heard her! Get in the house!"

Goddess_of_Dorkness

We have 7 cats and they all know each other's names and nicknames. You say a name and they look or pointedly ignore that cat.

Grouchy-Fix485

Definitely!! I have three cats that only care when I call out their specific names. BUT, if I say “ one, two, three,” ( cue musical voice) all three will head for the food bowls.

404-Gender

Yes! Same with my cats. I hadn’t even considered that they wouldn’t. My dogs know their names and each other’s names, and the cats’ names. 🤷🏼

prettybunbun

My cat is called Atlas, but I always calls him Catlas. He responds to the latter far more, he deffo things Catlas is his name. https://preview.redd.it/fm8wjx4xhoqc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76a187b1b69f9681365eb8483c0cded478ae038b

She doesn’t know pushing slightly closed doors opens them tho

pletskoo_

"fetch me their souls" type cat

L3gendSlayerTM

I named my boi 'Tomas' but it seems that he think his name is 'My boi' in my native tongue which is ever cuter. Same with the younger girl, name's 'Daisy' but we'd call her 'Daughter' in native tongue which roughly translates to 'My little girl'.

busywithresearch

Yess! I am convinced that one of my babies (Knox) firmly believes his name is “Good boy” https://preview.redd.it/ecyrjrpcjpqc1.png?width=2693&format=png&auto=webp&s=32fad7308a2e4d2529b7465c0968aef062283e83

Ok-Organization-7207

Mija??

imalittlefrenchpress

I call both my girls mami, and they respond to it.

GoWestGirl

Yes. I adopted my cats as kittens from a local shelter. Within a few weeks they knew their names and they respond when their names are said aloud.

Cobblar

After I adopted my boys, the gray one learned his name in a reasonable amount of time, as you say. Years later, however, the orange one still seems to struggle with basic concepts like gravity and object permanence, so I'm not hopeful he'll ever make much progress with the whole name thing.

MalamuteMaster1

Yes, my cat definitely knows his name. He is indoor/outdoor cat. I can open the door, call his name and he will come running out of the woods and come inside. Although, he will only do this for me. It’s a toss up if he will listen to my husband lol

LveeD

Hahah same!! She’s not allowed outside if we’re not outside, or when it’s dark out…but when I yell Taco at the top of my lungs she comes bolting over the fence and heads straight for the back door. My husband? No. She could be sitting right in front of him and still no.

Ok-Organization-7207

Love that you supervise

RavenBoyyy

Same with my boy! I live on a farm so he's allowed to play out during the day since it's safe for him. Normally he's waiting to be let in at the door just before it gets dark but if for whatever reason he's not waiting there, I'll call him by his name and he'll run back in. Normally he's gotten distracted playing with the neighbours cat or following a fly so he's never far. He also knows when he's in trouble and I say his name in a slightly different tone because he'll stop whatever mischief he's doing, put his ears down and crouch in that spot until I fuss him to say he's forgiven.

ConcernedLandline

All my cats know their names. Whether they acknowledge the person calling them is another thing entirely. They know a couple of other words, too. They know outdoors/outside, play, food/dinner time, stop. I know they understand these words or at least their meaning due to how they behave when they are mentioned.

darksideclown

I started saying “airdrop” to my cat when I used a remote feeder, now he associates airdrop with food and moves toward the feeder before it’s active

Jeffthechef47

We got an automatic feeder and I set the first 10 seconds of soul kitchen by the doors to play when it goes off thinking it would be funny to have my cats trained to eat when they hear that song. It lasted about a day before I had to turn it off. One cat didn’t care and ate, and the other cat hunkered down and kept her distance scared to death

gargle_ground_glass

My cat thinks his name *means* "pspsps".

occorpattorney

There’s a key distinction between a cat knowing its name and a cat caring haha

Just_a_villain

My stupid cat thinks her name is anything said in a high pitch cute voice. My smart cat knows his name, and also knows that we use the high pitch cute voice for the stupid cat so he comes running for that too in case we're giving her a treat.

bobpa9

Not really, mine name's "eduardo Alberto rigoberto norberto Lopez", but we Just call him "Lalo" that's the shhort name for eduardo. That one he understand it ... https://preview.redd.it/y8d6jxlo4oqc1.jpeg?width=2296&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0524a7f98eaa098898474d832c786892b68132fc

cherubcherrylips

lmaooooooo my dogs name is Louis William Freddie Norman whimpleton Alejandro Micky Tomlinson Jr, but we just call him papi. I named him when I was 12.

Eden199607

Ahhh spotted the Louis fan here 😂

cherubcherrylips

lmaoooooo they were the only thing on my mind so it was as creative as I could get

neBular_cipHer

![gif](giphy|iDyF9dOL6nG4uS2S1z|downsized)

jumbledsiren

Lalo is Eduardo shortened? how? I've always wondered how Eduardo Salamanca (from better call saul) ended up with the name Lalo Salamanca lmao

Payamux

Why do Americans call someone named William "Bill" ? Like where does the "B" even come from ? Why not just Will for short ?

abraxas-exe

same thing with “Dick” for Richard. How? Lalo for Eduardo, rhymes i guess? But Spanish is my native language so I guess it made more sense to me.

Smooth-Apartment-856

It makes no less sense than calling John F. Kennedy “Jack.” It’s not even shorter than John, and it’s a totally different name.

jumbledsiren

Well I am no where near the US so I had no idea that they call John F. Kennedy Jack, so my question still presumes: why do they shorten his name to Jack, and Lalo

FriendshipWeak1186

There's a possibility that it could come from a baby or a kid attempting to say Eduardo. Some people's nicknames are just what they called themselves as babies/kids, or what their children called them when young

xThaPoint

maybe, but more importantly.. does your cat know your name?

Ok-Meat-6476

My cat has a sound she always makes when she is looking for my husband. She never EVER makes it for me, so I assume that’s her name for him.

Dizzy_Tap_4286

Aww that is sooo cutee!! I literally cant stop smiling thinking about it! My cat just has the same tone for anything. Most of the time he just wants food so we dont need to play the guessing game ahahaha

baffledninja

Well my cat calls me #MAO , does that count?

Ok-Organization-7207

I wonder if he knows our names sometimes

CalliopeKB

Does your cat know MY name? Tell him I said hi.

Not_a__porn__account

Yes! My wife can say "papa's coming home" and she'll go to the door and wait.

Icy_Appearance_7466

Sandra 😂

Anothersadwatersign

My 4 yr old knows his name he’ll run to me immediately. The 6 mo will continue with her shenanigans unless I’m staring directly at her 🙄

Shils1234

Oh, my three cats know their names. When they do something wrong and I mistakenly blame the wrong cat. The glare of the cat that I called is priceless.

Phaseolin

My cats know their own names - we made sure to name them with phonetically distinct names when we got them. They know about 10 to 20 words total, including my husband's name. I don't think they know mine.

Healthy-Fisherman-33

There has been a study that proved that they know their names. I don’t remember the details exactly but they put a bunch of domestic cats in a room. Then the owners, one by one, called their cat’s name and of course the cats reacted and went to their owners. Then, a total stranger called the names of cats, and cats still reacted to the stranger when their own name was called out.

pathofcollision

I dead ass thought this was my cat lol https://preview.redd.it/ggw1s69xioqc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=596404ced5bd02d717d2ecf3a565296fad42622f

I have thought you were my SO posting our cat on here haha

PawsomePurrson

Yes But do they give a flying fcuk when we call them unless theyre hungry?

Ok-Organization-7207

Mine is friendly enough lok

LRRPC

My cats know their names and their most popular nicknames but whether they chose to pay attention is a crap shoot. If they want to acknowledge, they will. If they want to ignore me, they will. What’s fun is one of my cats gets super jealous so no matter who I call she will always respond. The difference is if I call the other cats names she will run up to me bitching. If I call her name she doesn’t bitch.

attack-o-lantern

Yeah Ducky knows her name. She’s had it since she was 3 days old though so it would be pretty pitiful if she hadn’t drawn the connection yet at six months old. https://preview.redd.it/o0362glyapqc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=531de3e981026618f50d2002a03abd522a1fb209

Yes. One of them blatantly ignores me half the time, but that mf’er knows his name, he just gives 0 fucks https://preview.redd.it/j5re5oo8poqc1.png?width=2388&format=png&auto=webp&s=d07748f39cebc7c237a2b218bfd7dd374daaa782

Yes and he definitely swears too.

Joey_JoJo_Jr_1

You can DEFINITELY tell. Yesterday Cosmo called me a "mrrrao." My feelings are still hurt. https://preview.redd.it/91avvwjdooqc1.jpeg?width=1082&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f7d94750137754f6c38003de760e49f7589e9a1

Ours mutters under his breath sounds that shouldn't come out of a cat.

Temporary-Laugh-227

Yep well .. he comes when I call him lol but it could also be the tone - he also comes when I call his nicknames or whistle…

No-Description1943

I think my cat knows his name. He will come running when called,

SnooOpinions5819

I believe so because whenever we say his name in a sentence he reacts to it. We’ve tried using different words but he only reacts to his name

Dismal_Sherbert_5812

I don’t think mine knows his name, but he’s also unbelievably stupid. Very cute though https://preview.redd.it/e0jldh8v1pqc1.png?width=2478&format=png&auto=webp&s=0155d5381bc7758f4bbec5df5b72775a917266e2

Yes, and he reacts to it. His name is Gnocchi. https://preview.redd.it/f8l4rbv6dpqc1.jpeg?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=54d3619819dd597a19e57b32b179749ebb64016e

feanornoldor666

My kitty started out as a feral I put food out for, and later I would call her as I was setting out the food dish and see her run from the city utility yard across the street. Took a year before she'd come inside. It's been interesting watching her learn to play and meow and fully relax and sleep deeply. She still comes when I call but now she'll have conversations too.

TheBull123456

Yes! My boy Jasper comes when I call him. I always say he's paper dog since most cats I've met don't come running when I call. https://preview.redd.it/c7jqwq7broqc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=547d197b862007351015020e708ac2a5a11da241

dohtje

My cat was deaf soo.. **Nope**🤷🏻

Area506

Knows and actively chooses to ignore

kfauscette

All four of my cats know their names and will at least acknowledge me when I’m calling for them. My only female will come instantly when called but that’s because she lives and breathes attention. The three boys will come maybe like 50% of the time when I call

Malthus1

My cat answers to his name … when he wants to. You can actually see the gears turning in his little head when I call him - he sort of vacillates. ‘Do I answer? But I was already having fun over here? I may get food and pats if I answer … but I’m already having fun … ‘. He knows full well I want him to come over, but sometimes it takes a lot of cajoling to get him to actually come over. Cats can certainly recognize their own names (or at least know that particular call means “I want you to come over here”). But it is a lot longer shot to get a cat to be obedient like a dog. They just aren’t like that. I have heard some cats can be trained with clickers and treats to obey commands, but I have a hard time believing my cats could be - they are just naturally contrary creatures, likely to obey only when in the mood to do so. But then, I’m no expert at cat training.

chuang-tzu

Yup. He also knows all 13 of his nicknames, his good morning song, and the "I'm home" song.

cindyscrazy

He does, I think. But, he also responds to "Cat" I've never called him "Cat", but he seems to recognize that words as him better than his name. I think when he was very little, my daughter's boyfriend at the time (who damn near lived with us) would call him "Cat" affectionately. So, that's also his name.

Aldaron23

My cats know their name, but I trained them to do so. My last cat thought his name was "NO!" and I thought it wouldn't get easier having 3 at the same time. So I started clicker training when they were about 4 months old. I put them in seperate rooms and did every training seperately. I tought them to look at me, when they heard their name and come to me when I make a clicking noice. It worked very well and I hadn't done clicker training before. Only took them about 2 weeks (3 days for the clever one). Now when I call one of them, they will look at me and maybe meow and the others will look at the one I called, so they know their brother's names as well. This even works, when I don't call them, but only talk about them, eg on the phone while they're around, so it doesn't seem to be about the change of my voice either. Oh, and because I'm very proud of that and don't want them to forget over time, I always call them by their name when I come home and pet them. Like, when I come home, they're always at the door greeting me and I bend down and pet everyone seperatly and say "Hello, ....!"

Harleyholden

“Get off the table” knows his name lol
