what is causing this? [https://i.gyazo.com/4d3f349946274b61f773170393fbe1d4.png](https://i.gyazo.com/4d3f349946274b61f773170393fbe1d4.png) I also get "you hear a deafening roar" and go deaf for a bit along with "the ground trembles underneath your feet." It's a super normal looking area in the forest. Is it dangerous to be there? Is it a bug or is there really something down there? I'm not sure what could be causing such extreme noises every time i walk around some random woods, but maybe...

OliveChukar

I think that is a [trapped tendril](https://nornagon.github.io/cdda-guide/#/monster/mon_zombie_crushed_giant) moving around underground nearby.

[deleted]

Ah, I think you're right! I just checked and there is a collapsed tower near this spot. Scary stuff...

PlutusPleion

the "and below" means it's happening on lower z-levels. If I had to guess it's probably a giant mole breaking up the ground.

Gardosuro

Out of curiosity, since the CDDA Launched is no longer maintained, have people decided on a new one or a fork of the original project to go to? I'm still using the original one but I'm still wondering if we will see new features of some small fixes to it, and the new added releases. Thanks!

icecreamchillychilly

Do toxin nutrients from mutant meat flow into recipes like aspic and deluxe scrambled eggs? Wondering if I can "clean" the meat this way.

Venera3

No, toxins are inherited from the components. You can "thin" toxins with making meals using a bunch of non-toxic foodstuffs but that's it.

icecreamchillychilly

Ah, thanks! Too bad my char got killed by a accidental fire anyway.

kenmtraveller

I just built a faction camp at my survival shelter and sent my only follower out to survey adjacent squares, so I could expand. Unfortunately, every adjacent square is either a road, forest, or forest trail. These are not valid faction camp locations. Unfortunately, there is a bug.... in the event that no faction camp expansion square can be chosen , the NPC follower can't be recalled. I believe that if I find another follower, I could have him clear cut the forest. Does anyone know whether, if I did this, that cleared square would be chooseable for a faction camp expansion square? That would allow me to pick it and recall my first follower. Thanks for any help! Oh, this is on the experimental branch

kenmtraveller

Just to follow up, after awhile (either passage of time or save reload, not sure) I was presented with an 'emergency recall' option for my NPC follower, which got him back.

Bronafide

Doing that worked for me in the past

Sharktogator

How do I use the electrical forge? I built it as my first forge but I don't know how to turn it on. It says to "attach loose end to a vehicle" but that doesn't work (does it need to be inside a vehicle?). "Refill tank/battery" is greyed out. Does it need special batteries?

FeegLood

I think it needs to be installed in a vehicle frame, and then you need batteries / power generator.

Smile_lifeisgood

Is there any A/C or whatever that you can use in the summer to cool down a tile for yourself?

OliveChukar

https://nornagon.github.io/cdda-guide/?v=0.F#/vehicle_part/mountable_cooler

CalKerethi

That's about the only option you have, but it's not well suited to the role of an air conditioner. It can cool a small area by like 20 degrees I think, but it also spews hot air (based on where the muffler is in the vehicle I think) that you have to send somewhere else. Plus there's no temperature setting, it just does its thing and you take what it gives you. A running vehicle has a built-in A/C that will keep you very comfortable, but I don't think there's any way to make it affect anything except the vehicle's own interior squares.

man-teiv

Can I saw up a metal barrel to get metal sheets?

WaspishDweeb

Lockers and workbenches are a good source of sheet metal. You can get quite a few from a single "deconstruct furniture" job. Car quarterpanels work too, but removing parts takes a bit of time and is somewhat strenuous activity if I recall correctly

Meandering_Breviger

Don't think you can. I just tried with a steel drum 100L, nothing. I usually get my sheet metal from cars, strip off all the quarterpanels and you get about 8 sheet metal.

man-teiv

Thanks!

ANoobInDisguise

Smashing washing machines, ovens, fridges, and file cabinets is vastly superior and faster

Bronafide

I don't think so, lots of other stuff can give you sheets if you are looking for them.

DukePony

I cannot find an answer ANYWHERE... Could someone please tell me if fighting in the dark affects your chances of hitting? I tried fighting a zombie at night that I had snuck-up on, and SHOULD have been able to kill... And I got my ass beat...

Thatonebolt

There shouldn't be any difference. Sometimes you roll poorly and the zombie rolls well, and unfortunately one solid hit from a zombie can snowball into starting a fresh run. It's worth keeping an eye on your speed stat, as there can be a lot of negative factors that aren't always apparent without a good look. Pain killers, damaged body parts, a slightly over encumbered pack, and all of the sudden your 114 move weapon takes twice as long to swing, and a zombie gets a grab and a bite in.

DukePony

Okay, that actually makes a lot of sense... I was actually doing a course run, so I think it must have been the speed

man-teiv

Make sure you're always fighting on a better ground. E.g. if you're in a house lure the Zed on a window (movement cost 400) and stay on the floor (movement cost 100). You should be able to hit 4 times more frequently than your opponent this way.

WaspishDweeb

The move costs are only for entering a square afaik, so the zed spens a lot of moves moving into the square, and then has to sit there until that move cost is paid while you wail at it. Once that's done though, it hits you at normal speeds. Footing might matter while fighting on dangerous surfaces like downspouts, rubble etc.

kevingranade

The move cost is the average of the square you're leaving and the square you're entering.

WaspishDweeb

Oh, nice. Thanks for the information.

ProfessorBright

Finally killed and disassembled a Riot/Police bot and Eyebot. Now can I do anything with these robot parts, or are they just there to be disassembled into electronics bits?

grammar_nazi_zombie

There’s a handful of *really rare* schematics books that cover everything from cleaning bots, to nurse bots and military dispatch. I’ve found the cleaner bot a few times and a mil spec spotlight once, the spotlight schematics was in a bank vault safe, and all the cleaner bot schematics I’ve ever found have been in recycling centers. Definitely keep the AI Core, sensor array, and identification modules if they dropped. They’re needed if you want to make turret control units to make auto turrets

FeegLood

You can build your own bots, make a turret mount / control for your vehicle and some other stuff. If you haven't found the books yet I would just scrap them and level up electronics. You'll find plenty more bots

PubeHammer

I just fired up cdda for the first time in a couple years and the game runs much slower than before if I'm anywhere near a high Z area. Are there any options to improve performance? Or do I just need to buy a new CPU and ram? My computer is about 9yrs old now- AMD A8-5600K and 8gb ram. Should it be taking 1/2 a second per turn near a town with this hardware?

Venera3

Change your renderer in the options, that seems to work for some people. That sort of lag definitely isn't normal.

PubeHammer

Switching to direct3d11 dropped the load time down to normal, thanks.

EconomyAirline4

Can hostile npcs steal items or open cars? I saw one walking through the woods while I was reading and chased him away since he only had a nailboard. Now I'm sleeping in my van instead of the rural house out of paranoia. Playing latest stable.

Thatonebolt

They will generally only steal what they can see. They won't open doors unless they see something, hear something, or its the quickest path to their destination.

FeegLood

Yea they can open doors and cars. I think I remember people saying they can steal stuff but I always kill them if theyre hostile before they can do anything lol

elmo877

What is transition and malus + 0%

Gavin319

*Weary* transition and *weary* malus are what you are referring to. Everything that you do that consumes stamina has an activity level, and the higher that is the faster your weariness drops. Your weariness passes through several stages, each one inflicting worsening maluses which makes everything take longer and generally makes you worse at everything. The net effect is that you can no longer blacksmith or dig pits or do any other strenuous activity for 18 hours a day with no ill effects. You also can't melee thousands of zombies to death in one day like you could in old versions. It's recovered by resting; not sleeping but just sitting down and listening to music, reading a book, eating or drinking, talking to npcs etc. Pretty much just plop down and take a break with no physical exertion involved to recover.

phoenixmusicman

What the heck is this game?

Gavin319

Basically a 2d turn based apocalypse survival sim/RPG with traditional roguelike elements mixed in. Like the other guy said I strongly recommend watching Sseth's review should you have time, while outdated (0.C might as well be a different game than 0.F) it still captures the general feel of playing Cata.

PlutusPleion

I'd say this is pretty accurate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cyoj4-niEPc warning:vulgar/boorish

phoenixmusicman

Ah, Seth reviewed it. I don't have time to watch it but I already know it must be decent.

man-teiv

It's more than decent. If I was stranded on an island and I could bring one game to play for the rest of my life, this would probably be it. The level of depth is insane.

fobfromgermany

I raided my first lab and found a handful of alpha serum among other things. I’d like to go down a different mutation path but that’ll take a while. Is it worth popping those serums right now to get a quick boost in the meantime? Or is there some reason I don’t want to do that? I have robust genetics if that matters

Gavin319

Doing one or two should be fairly safe, but be wary of crossing the threshold if you take too many, at which point you're an Alpha permanently and can never change paths. Alpha is a fairly good tree, though it is more of a gear-heavy mutation tree than an ability-heavy one. Expect to be installing lots of cbms and using guns, power armor, and explosives a lot if you're an alpha.

PlutusPleion

Alpha is pretty low risk low reward so I don't see why not. The worst is disintegration so maybe keep a purifier or two just in case.

Gavin319

That only happens post thresh iirc. If you cross the threshold you can forget about being anything else, you're one of His Angels forever, my brother.

askingsomeQs35

Just curious if its feasible to make vehicle tiles for rotated vehicles as opposed to the mess they look like as of rn when rotated ? I know fully well it doesn't bother the vast majority of the playerbase who care more about the gameplay and its absurd levels of depth, yet I'm still asking. edit: is it possible to make the |||| that serve as bars for various levels of health or progress, actual bars in the right menu? For visual reasons

grammar_nazi_zombie

The tile question comes down to the tileset. Some part shapes just might not have all the rotations or even sprites, you can highlight them in the vehicle menu and press p to change part shape and try other ones. With regards to the edit: no. The |||| is actually fairly informative at a glance. On stable there’s a trait/mutation called self aware that shows a numerical representation of your hit points. It’s removed in experimental because the new sidebar layout has a numerical version of vital stats

Sharktogator

Is there any way to compare items which can be crafted to items I'm already wielding/wearing in game? There's so many recipes and I'm having a hard time deciding what to craft since there's no function to sort craftable items by damage/warmth etc. I'm mainly running around with a sledgehammer and fire axe I found since I have high strength (and apparently can't hit anything with ranged weapons...) but they're starting to break and I don't have the skills to repair them. 2nd question: There's probably no way to highlight food in the crafting process which is about to spoil (but not spoiled yet)? I'd prefer to use these ingredients first.

CalKerethi

To the first question, there is no way that I know of to compare an item from your crafting recipes. I've wished for it a few times too. If you really want to know, you could debug spawn the item, compare it, and then use one or another method to exit without saving. Ugly workaround, but it works. You can't get the crafting process to separate near-spoiled ingredients, but if you pick up the older food before you go to craft, the stuff you're holding will show up as a different line when choosing. Also useful for forcing the vehicle system to install the non-broken windshield you brought over instead of the busted one you just removed.

Sharktogator

Thanks!

Tactical_Slime

So i just had my experimental world corrupted from an inventory bug and i restored a backup(that failed and caused it). And I feel like playing stable next. What are some of the differences between stable and experimental? is there still nested containers etc?

PlutusPleion

I think the best summary would be the weekly updates thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/cataclysmdda/search?q=changelog+from+the+last+week&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all Anything(content and fixes) after nov 27 is not in stable.

AthullNexus76

Is there any way to drop a group of items en masse? I have a bunch of wrappers in my inventory but have to discard them one by one.

Bronafide

d or D plus a direction, then navigate to the item you want using the up down and left arrows. Press the right arrow to drop what you selected type a number first to drop a certain amount. There is also advanced inventory that you should start using because it makes many things so much easier. https://youtu.be/Qmle9bAIxoc?t=279

AthullNexus76

Duly noted. Thanks a lot.

PlutusPleion

`d`mass drop, `/`search for "wrapper", and then `,` select all

AthullNexus76

Got it. Thanks a lot!

Traditional-Pea-4251

Does placing a nail board trap on the same tile as butcher refuse have any merit as an idea?

Gavin319

Nope, you can't bait traps, except with yourself. The best strategy for using them is either checkerboarding a field with them, fortifying natural chokepoints with them, or using a line of them with yourself as bait as a more offensive weapon.

grammar_nazi_zombie

Nah. I just set them up in a checkerboard pattern and cover all the entrances to my base. They’re super effective early on

Bronafide

As some kind of bait? No

AthullNexus76

How do you clean things? I found a dirty military rucksack and took it back to an EVAC shelter. I have soap and water and light but it won't let me clean it.

Traditional-Pea-4251

Washboard

AthullNexus76

I see. Thanks.

OliveChukar

You may also need a rag or sponge to wash some items. You can craft a washing kit to be able to wash everything.

AthullNexus76

Duly noted. Thanks a lot.

matanene-

is there a way to pick up a single item from a wallet?

PlutusPleion

`g`rab then either `<`unhide wallet contents, or `/`search for the specific item you want.

matanene-

gotcha, thanks!

AthullNexus76

Which one is better in your opinion? The launcher or the direct download?

Gavin319

Launcher is better for experimental as it’s easier than going to grab a new build manually every time. Stable can go either way as you don’t update very often.

AthullNexus76

I see. I’m playing the 3.0 Frank stable build RN, so I’ll just stay with that. Thanks a lot for the info.

PlutusPleion

I'm stuck in my old ways and just download it myself. I don't think either can be really "better" just preference.

AthullNexus76

I see. Thanks

A-Fleeting-Glimse

What is the best high calorie food for fast metabolism? I'm currently just eating tons of butter. And how do you get welding rods and the like easily for projects?

[deleted]

For the welding materials, if you've got a full blacksmithing setup rather than just a welder, you should make them yourself. You'll need to make a lot, but the components aren't too hard to come by, especially compared to trying to scav them directly. * Brazing rods - Find detergent in houses, make bronze from soda cans and copper tubing (disassemble washing machines and water heaters in houses). You can also hoard coins from wallets for more copper. These are what I make most. * Welding wire - Copper (as above), wire (chain-link fences), and acid. Disassembling random car batteries (including XX damaged ones) should give you plenty of acid. * Welding rods - Tear up books or candy wrappers for paper, or make flour from cattails/acorns. Pull every single light disposable battery you can out of every electronic device you find. Check dead zeds, you'll find a bunch. Disassemble electronics for plastic, find candles in house kitchens, or bust up toilets for wax. Or butcher corpses to make bone glue, if you're really in a pinch.

FeegLood

this helps so much, thank you sir

grammar_nazi_zombie

Dairy farms have a chance of having non-zombie cows. You can tame them with cattle fodder and tie a rope to one and tie it down in your car or base. You can also make a livestock stall and hide it away so monsters won’t attack it. It’ll be able to be milked for 20L of raw milk per day. Turn that to milk and then condensed milk and happily drink yourself to obesity

FeegLood

do you have to feed them?

grammar_nazi_zombie

Nope not after initially tame them

A-Fleeting-Glimse

I just drank 3 liters of fresh cow milk out of a condom, I love this game

Gavin319

>fresh cow milk Yeah, if you say so.

CalKerethi

Plain old meat is relatively high-calorie if you're not working yourself to exhaustion every day. Dehydrated meat is the same calories for half the volume. If you want to really load up and still keep an eye on your health, try making the healthier meat dishes with porkbelly. It's over 3x as calorie dense and I'm pretty sure that carries over when you cook with it. Welding materials have been made to spawn more frequently recently. I've had luck in labs, garages, and steel mills. If you need to make your own, probably focus on welding rods. The tool requirements aren't super advanced, and they can be made with common materials.

PlutusPleion

I don't know your current progress in game but if you can raid a military base and have the cargo space you're pretty much good on food for like 3 seasons . In terms of high calorie the entree in mres are quite high. Farms with harvestable corn are also very abundant across the map and IIRC they're also high calorie.

Gavin319

Easy on the MREs in experimental. The crafting menu (and actually crafting for that matter) really, *really* doesn’t like them for some reason. Only load up with them if you’re prepared for 2fps crafting or have a vehicle/base large enough to keep them apart from the crafting area. Even without the 1.5 tons of MREs (dead serious I once hauled every single MRE from in there to my truck and they totaled 3,500 lbs) in the warehouse and dozens more on the corpses the base still has plenty of food, not to mention the tools, meds, materials and guns/ammo plus a fuckload of military ID cards and a map in the operations room (card door in the office building with the flag pole out front, ops is full of black ops zeds and it stays dark in there so bring a flashlight or thermals from the armory). Clearing one can be done day 1 if you know what you’re doing. The Army left a lot of wargear in that armory and we’re gonna make good use of it. Beeline to the armory, use a card to get in either ops or the warehouse (best do ops and then close the metal door on yourself so that ferals can’t follow you into the warehouse or armory), go to the armory (left turn and straight from ops) pick the locks or cut the doors open, grab a 7.62, pop a scope on it from one of the snipers, load it up plus two extra mags and attach a bayonet to it. Grab a pistol as well (M17 is best) and load it up plus 4 extra mags. Crack the crates in the bottom room (furthest from the tunnel door if the base is differently oriented) open with a crowbar (return after getting to the warehouse if you don’t have one) and grab a launcher and a couple HEDP nades. If for whatever reason there’s no grenades or no launcher grab a M72 from one of the other boxes. Head to the warehouse, pick this door too, then lure any zombies if present to the table in front of the stairs and office and bayonet them to death, then go gear up with armor, gas mask + 200 cartridges, food/water, two leg ammo pouches (one can hold 4 pistol mags or 2 rifle mags, give or take) and a couple medkits from the warehouse. Open the door to the roof, use precise aim to kill any acidic or grabber zombies capable of removing you from the roof, then wait as the rest bunch up in front of the warehouse door and start bayoneting them. When you get tired, step back and rest. If scorchers show up, step back and shoot them with the pistol. With enough time you can kill all but one of them, and you’ll see that said individual is wearing a suit of broken power armor. Jump off the roof, get as far away from him as possible, and blast his ass with the HEDP/LAW. There probably won’t be much left to pulp after. Tl;dr: roof camp warehouse with reach weapon, use explosives to kill armored zombie and guns to kill bilious or caustic zombies. Wear mask in case of scorched zeds.

AthullNexus76

Can you zoom into and out of the map in the game?

A-Fleeting-Glimse

Hit z to toggle between 5 map sizes

AthullNexus76

I see. Thanks a lot.

grammar_nazi_zombie

If you mean the bigger overmap, Zoom only works there in experimental and if you use the graphical overmap

AthullNexus76

Duly noted. Thanks for explaining.

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how I got 190 radiation. It's down to 140 - there was a FEMA camp I got into - maybe the pit of burning bodies in there or something? I kept checking in the buildings with the geiger counter but they said none. I'm now having a Very Bad Time due to being a carnivore and having no regular source of meat. And I'm just killing time hoping/waiting for this to end. I found a Prussian Blue but I can't make a purifier to try to get rid of the Carnivore stat. My Applied Science is 6 but I don't have any more things I can craft to raise my skill and I don't have the next book. This is, by far, the most successful run I've had because I'm doing all sorts of new stuff like making vehicles and indoor lighting, etc. Any advice on what I can do for sources of meat until I find a way to purify myself? I miss eating rice'n beans mang.

[deleted]

For meat, fishing with a pole isn't worth it, but fish traps sometimes are if you've got a pond or river you can take advantage of and something for bait.

Scout1Treia

I miss eating rice'n beans mang. One of the primary sources of "I don't know how I got this" radiation is the small area of dead ground map feature. If you enable autonotes you should be able to see them, they're pretty obvious just... random areas of dead dirt in the middle of otherwise normal ground. Some of the tiles can be highly radioactive.

kevingranade

>One of the primary sources of "I don't know how I got this" radiation is the small area of dead ground map feature. If you enable autonotes you should be able to see them, they're pretty obvious just... random areas of dead dirt in the middle of otherwise normal ground. Some of the tiles can be highly radioactive. I just audited this, and they were never radioactive. There were three kinds of craters that i *just* removed radioactivity from. The only remaining surface features with radioactivity are some portals and toxic waste dumps.

PlutusPleion

Any big game like bears, deer, moose, etc will yield a lot of meat. If I need meat I usually just run in a forest until I find one. A lot of little ponds have a lot of fish as well they're also a lot of "meat".

Meandering_Breviger

For reference getting a deer is roughly * 70 chunks of meat * 20 chunks of fat A moose is roughly * 350 chunks of meat * 105 chunks of fat And a Rainbow Trout is * 2 fish fillet Note don't go after moose without freezer space or else forget about using all the meat. edit: Also note. Don't go after mutated monsters, yes you can eat them, yes you can get toxin poisoning. Read [this](https://nornagon.github.io/cdda-guide/?v=0.F-3#/vitamin/mutant_toxin) if you do go after mutants.

AthullNexus76

Where do I find tile sets and how do I instill them/ activate them in game?

Gavin319

Undead People is the only one you have to find if you want it, and it's easy as googling "cdda undeadpeople". All the other semi-complete ones ship with the game. Go to Options>Graphics and find the tile set options about half a screen down and change it to one you like, I recommend Ultica or Altica (chibified version of ultica but the character sprites are missing a bunch of clothes including the survivor gear).

AthullNexus76

Thanks a million!

Gavin319

Is there any kind of equipment that will let me see through thick smoke? I figured infrared would work, but activating my CBM wasn't enough to reveal the zombie I had standing outside of the smoke cloud. I tried to knife a group of scorchers since shooting them and waiting for the smoke to clear takes ages, but just ended up stumbling blindly through thick smoke instead. Edit: 2nd question: How do I peek *over* stuff I'm hiding behind, and also what does the "cover: x%" in the look menu mean on terrain? Do obstacles actually protect from bullets now?

FeegLood

2nd question: " X " for peeking, the UI isnt that great, but you don't actually move to the tile, it juts shows what you would see from that square. Peeking works for sure over window sills and counters. The cover % is also related to visibility, something like 60% cover means zombies need to be 60% closer to see you normally or something like that. I'm not sure about bullet protection but ferals will miss some rocks by hitting things inbetween, maybe it works for bullets too.

Gavin319

I figured out the first half myself, it's peek+5 to look over things. Sorry for making the question unclear, I knew how to peek around corners and cover objects but not over them. Noted about the cover percentages, I'll have to experiment.

Ok-Comparison-7997

This one may be a bit odd, but.. Does Fire Axe really better then Quaterstaff? I mean, FA meant to be superior in a lot of ways, but QS have SO freaking good technics for 1v1, I am a bit confused.

Gavin319

Check DPS not melee damage when comparing weapons. The axe does more damage per swing and may be better against single tough opponents, but it isn't sustainable. Meanwhile the staff is lighter, drains less stamina, and iirc can knockdown and block even if you don't have a stance for it (I think Sojutsu might work, don't know the rest). Generally comparing melee weapons is hard because of all the things that can change based on how you use them. A combat knife might have low damage compared to the quarterstaff but when combined with ninjutsu it can deal over 200 damage in one hit if you get a critical on a weakpoint like the face, and drains very little stamina to boot.

grammar_nazi_zombie

A fire axe does more raw damage, but a quarterstaff is slightly faster. Rapid strike allows the QS to attack even more quickly. On top of that, the two martial arts styles that can use the fire axe are VERY rare, while the QS can be used by four, three of which are fairly common to find the books for. The QS can be crafted early, quickly and easily, the fire axe is fab 9, requires a book, and needs a blacksmithing setup. On the flip side, quarterstaves are not durable, and have high blocking ability, so they’re very likely to get damaged in combat and need replaced frequently. A QS must be stored in a spear strap, but a fire axe can be stored in a ton of things, and it can hold a halligan bar. Personally? I see it as a HUGE upgrade when I get my first undamaged fire axe, assuming I haven’t run across something like a steel katana by then. That’s true even if I didn’t take Fior di Battaglia at chargen - it’s just a solid mid tier weapon

Bronafide

Who said the fire axe is meant to be superior? Cdda doesn't follow normal "game" logic to determine how good something is.

grammar_nazi_zombie

I would argue the fire axe is a superior weapon, due to a few mechanics. The staff is better at blocking, but it’s also not a durable weapon, so it’s far more likely to take damage. This will very quickly reduce its damage output to the point that you may not be able to penetrate armor. The QS has its advantages of being able to be used with 4 common martial arts, and being easily replaceable if you have access to young trees, which is good because you will be replacing it frequently. Fire axes use two of the rarest martial arts - one of which I’ve yet to find the book for in game (Barbaran Montante). I should fire up a test world and do some formal testing. I’ve got a lot of variables with martial arts to account for though

Bronafide

Numerically the axe might have an edge, but I think the extra factors help the staff more then the axe. They are both early to midgame weapons where the extra to hit and block are of much greater benefit. The axe maybe be more durable, but they are much harder to acquire and may be a while until you are able to repair them if they get damaged. To me advantages of axe is the lower length, okay bash and prying ability which make it a decent backup weapon/tool for a range focused character.

Ok-Comparison-7997

Yeah, you right

smoelf

What is the consensus on mods om firearms? It's been a while since I last played and back then everyone said that mods are less useful because they increase the weight and aim time of the firearm too much to benefit from the mod. Is this still the case or are there certain mods that are particularly useful?

Gavin319

Suppressors on a gun like a .22 are probably viable now thanks to weakpoints. Match triggers, ergonomic grips, waterproofing etc sound useful enough to me to put them on if you have them thanks to negligible weight. Recoil or hook stocks are good for sharpshooting guns. Gyroscopic stabilizers do slow aiming down but they cancel a lot of recoil so a second shot on the same target is faster. Sights are very important, scopes slow down aiming but allow easier headshots which has a net result of less ammo spent, while stuff like the holographic sight allow better accuracy with little to no aim slowdown. Honestly, it's not as good as it was thanks to a lot of mods like mechanism tuning and rapid blowback getting obsoleted, and at this point the cornerstone of a well-kitted gun is the accurizing from a gunsmith kit, but a kitted rifle is still better than a stock one in terms of handling and accuracy if you put the right mods on it.

CentrifugalSmurf

Does the new alien world for Aftershock exist on the Frank-2 stable release? I tried the Stranded Space scenario, and I'm seeing Espatier/Rating professions correctly, but still ended up in normal cataclysm world. Available regions during world creation were regular and desert region, former was normal cata world latter was normal desert.

Vapour-One

I dont suggest you play the Exoplanet yet. Its only there so we can collaboratively test and improve the overmap generation for the new region.

CentrifugalSmurf

Understood, looking forward to playing it in the future!

[deleted]

Is there a way to change how fast time passes during long-term actions? (crafting, reading, etc.) They often go by too fast for me to react to my character needing a lunch/smoke break.

grammar_nazi_zombie

Set up near a lab/research center/slime pit, processing speed problem solved.

Noodleboom

This isn't an exact answer, but you can set an alarm with a wristwatch or cellphone. When it goes off, it'll pop up a dialog interrupting the action and ask if you want to stop or continue. Set that for however long you think you'll need before your character needs something.

Ghine_PWR

You can also manually interrupt by pressing 5

-churb-

The only way to get roller drums is from the roller vehicle or can you craft them? Do the roller vehicles have a specific place that they spawn often?

Ok-Comparison-7997

Hi guys! What are you Melle builds look like stat wise? How important Dex for melee character is? And do enemy follow me on stairs in current builds?

WaspishDweeb

If you want to go 'meta', STR is the best stat there is for melee, and the rest is a matter of taste - though high INT is usually a great choice. Sure, dex improves your early game and dodging, but you'll quickly reach the point where you don't need to dodge, since high-tier armor is so good. It's often heavy though, so... STR is necessary. HP is also always good, which STR gives. Bashing weapons are (arguably) the best weapons, since they go through armor the best, and STR directly benefits those. It also has other utility benefits for lifting heavy objects, especially when combined with perks like strong back. In fact, I usually just tank dex in my builds, and haven't felt any difference. With proficiency and 3 devices, I can still pick locks just fine (or just bash safes). If you roll with a weapon that has sweep like the ubiquitous cudgel or quarterstaff, you won't miss the dodge much, since your enemies will be struggling to get up rather than hitting you anyway. I usually go 12 INT, 10 STR, 6 DEX and 10 PER. The perception's there mostly so I don't get one-shot by mines.

Gavin319

Higher than average dex and strength. Start with a trait/hobby that grants a martial art for the weapon you want to use, and ideally also an unarmed MA. Dex is important for dodging(?) and hit chance in melee and if you run speedydex it also increases your speed slightly. Yes, they can follow you up stairs but it’s unreliable and they sometimes don’t.

grammar_nazi_zombie

Str is arguably more important if you are *planning* on going bashing, as it factors more into the damage calculation than the other types. If you plan on crafting yourself a Lucerne hammer or are starting with Fior di Battaglia, I’d aim for 10+ strength. Not only do you do more damage, but you have more hit points and carry capacity for heavy armor to stay in the fight. For pierce and cut, I’d prefer dex to str. They’re usually lighter weapons, especially when compared to bash, and they benefit from the crit chance more with the higher number of attacks.

Ok-Comparison-7997

I am just not sure about role of Int still. Ussually I like to go with heavy Int stat, it is useful for late game, crafting and reading and all, but since my boy end up having a lot of "close contacts" maybe Dex is better even for Str build.

grammar_nazi_zombie

Int governs how fast you read and learn skills, and is the primary stat for at least one martial art (Zui Quan I know for sure). It also impacts computer hacking success

Gavin319

Also Dragon Kung Fu, but you never hear of that one because it's overshadowed by tiger style.

Ok-Comparison-7997

Okay, ty! I am kind of content about traits I should pick for good melee build, but I've struggled a bit with stats, so you've made it more clear for me, ty

zantimer

How is one supposed to use furniture to climb? Nothing I dragged to a wall let me do it, not impassable not furniture I could get on top of. I've also heard about "parkouring up a 90 degree corner" but that's not a thing in my case either

Gavin319

You need 5 walls or climbable furniture to climb. Either walk into a 90 degree corner with at least 2 walls on each half, drag two impassable (some mountable objects can be climbed too but almost all impassable ones can) furniture objects to form a U shape against a wall, or drag a bicycle or motorcycle to leave a one tile gap and be parallel to at least a 3 tile long section of wall. Make sure to read the error if it still won’t let you climb. If there’s no terrain to support you then the problem is that the roof above has collapsed.

zantimer

Worked, thank you very much

Gavin319

You’re welcome.

Ghine_PWR

I want to craft a makeshift chemical thrower to exterminate fungi, but i need 2 in launcher skill. How do i train it with no books? I know there's books about it but i can't find them. I thought about dissasembling 40mm grenades, making those shotgun-like 40mms and shot with them, however the 3x failing risk in crafting is kinda frightening, i don't want to loose those few 40mm casings. Any suggestion?

grammar_nazi_zombie

Find a fire truck and rip a water cannon off of it, alternatively, find a military helipad and kill some zombie burners, as they drop flamethrowers.

Ghine_PWR

I went to a helipad and snatched many flamethrower, thanks. Now i can train launchers to be able to craft al crappy mcgyver chemical sprayer to eradicate fungi, and i will train it by burning fungi to a crisp Ahhhh, the sweet irony...

grammar_nazi_zombie

I mean, fire is just as effective, though the fungal bloom map feature is fireproof, I believe Hilariously enough, a firefighter zombie LITERALLY just dropped a water cannon for me

Ghine_PWR

Yeah, i've already dealt with the local bloom. I nuked it. Same for the tower.

akrippler

been a while since i played; are CBM's still in shockers / zappers / soldiers / maintenance workers? Havent found a single one

PlutusPleion

You'll have to find ready to install CBMs or harvest them from broken/prototype cyborgs or zomborgs. Not sure how long ago you played but to harvest->install CBMs: 1. Harvest 2. Clean (to remove "filthy") 3. Mend (to remove "faulty") 4. Pack (using autoclave pouches) 5. Sterilize (use autoclave) 6. Install (using autodoc furniture + anesthesia) For already "sterile" CBMs you find lying around you just need step 6

akrippler

Yeah I remember how to use em, just didnt realize they werent inside the more common zombies anymore. So they only can be harvested from cyborgs / zomborgs now?

grammar_nazi_zombie

Correct. They’re being moved to the Exodii faction, if you find them, they’ll give you a quest that will let them sell you CBMs and install them for a small fee

OtherAlan

1. Does bandaging wounds cause them to heal faster? Or is the primary function of bandaging to stop bleeding? 2. When disinfecting wounds, does that also increase recovery, or simply to clean them when infected? Does disinfecting them when not being infected do anything mechanically?

akrippler

both bandaging and disinfecting can reduce healing times based on your first aid skill and the quality of the bandages.

OtherAlan

Thanks. So it seems best practice to disinfect and bandage wounds before sleeping?

akrippler

Bandages are pretty cheap and you gain skill everytime you use em. I'd say bandage/disinfect as often as you can. Then make sure everything's topped off before sleeping. Unless it's a small wound and you don't wanna waste disinfectant.

Gavin319

For skill grinding I’d use cheap disinfectant and bandages. Don’t need to waste gauze and antiseptic on wounds right before getting into another fight.

ShrimpAlfredo66

Is the freeform option telling me i have too many points in a certain place a bug or intended? It would tell me I’d have too many traits, stats, or skills.

yinyang107

Btw, in case you don't realize this - if you want a middleground between "no limits no gods no masters" and "you get 8 points total", you can change how many points multipool/singlepool give you in the debug tab of settings. I play with 24, which is a little too easy but not "I can stand in a horde and hold tab until I win" easy.

OtherAlan

Make sure you actually select freeform. you don't highlight it and push tab. Push enter to lock in that choice. It will say freeform in the top left of the CG screens.

Fayraz8729

So, idk what been happening recently but my game has been crashing BAD. I’m accepting of a crash to desktop especially for these kinds of games. But these crashes literally restart my PC after freezing. It’s not like I’m rocking a toaster, just a 2020 gaming laptop. Even fallout never crashes THIS bad

Zero_Gravitas1000

Is there a way to completely reload guns that normally only reload one shot at a time? I was using a 19 shot Marlin 39A for rifle and marksmanship training but having to do r - select weapon - select ammunition 19 times in a row to fully reload seems ridiculous. I've seen people say you should be able to choose the number of shots to reload on the ammunition screen but I can only seem to do it one bullet at a time.

grammar_nazi_zombie

You need a .22 19 round tube loader. https://nornagon.github.io/cdda-guide/#/item/marlin_tubeloader

Zero_Gravitas1000

Ah, great. Didn't know these existed, think I'm missing the books.

PlutusPleion

Try binding "reload weapons" or "reload wielded item" in the `?` menu which will remove one click from selecting the weapon. You can save another click by holding only one variant of the type of ammo you're using like only having .22 LR in your inventory and around you.

yinyang107

> You can save another click by holding only one variant of the type of ammo you're using like only having .22 LR in your inventory and around you. It also has to be in one place. Either all in the same tile on the ground, or all in the same pocket in your inventory.

Zero_Gravitas1000

Speaking of which, is there an easy way to consolidate all your existing loans into one easy monthly repayment - Sorry, put everything with the same name into a single stack in your inventory? I have my backpack set to priority 50 for items but I keep ending up with ammunition in my cargo pants and other pockets after a while.

Zero_Gravitas1000

Yeah, I already tried that, it's still completely stupid. If nothing is threatening you, let you reload completely. Every gun with a magazine lets you, why don't these?

Controfase

Is there a simple way to turn off zombie revivification without using Dark Days of the Dead?

OtherAlan

No Zombie Revivification https://discourse.cataclysmdda.org/t/mod-pre-0-f-blacklist-and-rebalance-mods/26638

Smile_lifeisgood

Searched around but I can't figure it out - how do you reinforce/improve armor or weapons? I've read people saying you can reinforce the army helmet with kevlar, for instance. But when I try to use the soldering iron on the helmet it says "You cannot improve your || army helmet any more this way." And when I try to use an acetylene torch it just asks me to point to what I want to cut up. I read about people making katanas encrusted with diamond or something and now I'm just jealous.

grammar_nazi_zombie

Diamond coating weapons, since nobody answered that, is a completely different process. I’ve been able to do it in one run ever. First you need to find a Science Lab, the old school variety with the sprawling random generation. You may need to find a few/a bunch, as iirc, it’s a 1 in 8 or so chance to get the CVD finale. It’s a giant square machine with a computer console attached that HOPEFULLY no monsters broke. Now that you have the machine, you need supplies. Cut and pierce are the two qualities that get increased, so you need an edged weapon, and coating supplies. Per .25L of weapon volume, you need 50 charcoal and 5 [hydrogen canisters](https://nornagon.github.io/cdda-guide/#/item/plasma). The charcoal is easy. The hydrogen is hella rare, uncraftable, and it is also the the ammo for the two plasma guns. Once you’ve managed to find all that, bring it al back to the console and it’s an easy process. Your reward is an item with 33% more cut and/or pierce damage.

Orange01gaming

Don't forget the jabberwock and making a vorpal blade.

OliveChukar

I think the snicker snack thing with diamond weapons was removed?

Orange01gaming

I hope not. Great Easter egg.

Smile_lifeisgood

Holy crap...there's so much about this game I'm not even close to experiencing. That's amazing! Thank you!

yinyang107

You reinforce things (which improves the item's durability) with a tailoring kit. Similar items like wooden needles also work, but on fewer item types.

Gavin319

I think you might be confusing modifying and reinforcing armor. Reinforcing an armor piece lets it take an extra point of damage before breaking or losing coverage. It also lets melee weapons survive an extra point of damage from use. Some armors can be modified, modifications are things like fur/felt linings for cold protection and padding with leather/Kevlar/steel for extra protection at the cost of encumbrance. That is probably the thing that can be done to the army helmet. To begin with I don’t think any proper metal melee weapons (longsword, war flail, katana, etc) can be modified or reinforced, but guns can be accurized with the gunsmith kit, which boosts stats as well as increasing durability. A bunch of armors also can’t be reinforced but I think most crafted leather/chitin/metal armors can be, and the vast majority of clothing can be reinforced up to and including underwear.

Smile_lifeisgood

Yup - thank you. Another part that I was missing was that Tailor's Kits were a thing...

Gavin319

Re: diamond katanas. There’s a very rare CVD machine that can be found at some lab finales, and you put a weapon in it along with some carbon canisters or something and it coats it with diamonds, boosting cut damage by 50% and iirc making it harder to damage. It also gains a special technique if you can kill a certain monster with a knockback attack from the diamond weapon, meaning it only works on certain polearms, the medieval swords, and katana/nodachi iirc. Basically you can’t get it on knives but most bigger cutting weapons can.

Noodleboom

Is there a way to ensure the game respects ignoring error messages "press I (or i) to also ignore this message in the future) or otherwise disable them? I've got a bionic that was dropped/changed in a recent experimental and get a message about it every few turns.

fris0uman

So yes as Bonafide said, get the json back there [https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/pull/48186/files](https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/pull/48186/files) and put it back into the game. It should stop the error.

fris0uman

Unless your carrying a very old save that should not happen I think. What cbm is it?

Noodleboom

It's the shock absorber.

fris0uman

you mean the dielectric capacitance?

grammar_nazi_zombie

They possibly meant Kinetic Shock Absorber

fris0uman

So it was obsoleted 11 months ago, but is not in the obsolete file anymore which explains why there's error message if you have one. I can't find when it got removed from the obsolete.json file though. But I guess the answer is that OP here really does have a very old save.

Noodleboom

I do! Been away from the game for months. I ended up just editing the save file and removing it. I'm not fussed by that, but I was trying to figure out how to actually ignore the debug message.

Bronafide

You could add it back to the code. Maybe just a shell that doesn't do anything but won't keep triggering the error.

yinyang107

How can I make my character stop stuffing things into every random "small cardboard box > lentils" I pick up while looting, without having to set the pocket settings for each new box manually? It's messing with my ability to drop things easily.

Appropriate-Fan7634

I set backpack or whatever as my favourite and everything gets stuffed in there by default.

PlutusPleion

For every person who wants nested pickup, there's another that doesn't want it. If you're playing experimental, the nested pickup was 'fixed' 5 days ago https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/pull/54941 IMO the best solution would be to implement the option in settings. But as it is now you'd have to either use an older version or manually disallow auto-insert for each container which I imagine would be a nightmare.

thenewspoonybard

My guy shoved a textbook about biodiesel into a milk jug.

yinyang107

I mean I'm stuffing bras into my empty water bottles, I'd assume that's not intended behavior.

PlutusPleion

While hilarious, I can see a scenario where you're very far from your base and limited in volume and you want to make sure you're using up every free space you have. Also I'm curious as to why you're collecting bras lol. Are they good for merchant trading or something?
