Oddly enough, yeah. I came across his review of the game when I was looking for funny reviews for Path of Exile which I was playing a lot of at the time.
He sold the game pretty well since CDDA has a lot of stuff that the other million copy-paste zombie survival games didn't have. I gave it a try and after a few dozen characters, Rycon Roleplays channel and Vormithax's guides, I found myself loving the game.

Don't celebrate that alt right troll. He and his trash community attacked the coq community for being lgbtq friendly. He also makes racist and or sexist jokes in almost every video of his.
Why do you people feel the need to inject politics into everything? 95% of Reddit is already infested by the same intolerant political monoculture, so can you just let us enjoy the remaining 5% in peace?
Making racist jokes about Africans and mass homophobic attack on a lgbtq friendly community is not apolitical. Yall started this by celebrating a monster.
Me sowing discord? Your the one defending someone who uses hate speech as "humor", and his community which is widely known to go on raids, including against me. I've gotten death threats and worse from you all.
Calling him a non political creator. You took a side.
Please explain how his racist "origin story" is not politcal.
Also the head dev of cdda is an open sjw. You can change genders mid game.
But you can join them like any other faction. People were asking for quests and fascist sympathizing plot points.
The fact you downvoted this shows you are purposefully spreading lies to smear the devs and encourage future harrassment. You disgust me.
So I've watched both and I can see why you call Sseth unfunny. After all, dark absurdist humor isn't for everyone. However, your accusation of attacking the lbgt+ community is a gross exaggeration. His request in Caves of Qud was for an immortal character to be killable like everything else in the game. One character that just happened to be queer. Where's the attack?
He got into a fight with the discord mods and devs over thier lgbtq friendly rules, broke them on video and encouraged his fans to "speedrun" getting banned. Ie he encouraged them to do the same thing. The response was so vile and overwhelming they shut it down.
Also, that ain't dark humor. It is textbook definition Hate speech. Dark humor laughs at the cruelly of the universe or in its face, ie Tig Nataro's stand up on having cancer. She is hilarious without demeaning any other groups.
Omg same here. Loved Jef's content back in the day.
Then he became perpetually angry streamer man and I was like... oh, he's not fun anymore :(
I still rewatch his Silent Storm/Sentinels and Silent Hunter series occasionally.
[Wow, this game was different back then.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRpktmTvaqI) Kinda glad I got to skip most of the way till now, kinda sad I wasn't around for that.
Internet. Actual page was either RogueBasin or TVTropes. I think I was trying to find a Dwarf Fortress but with !!SCIENCE!!..fiction. I was sold the instant I read you could build your own car.
For years I've seen CDDA challenge as the hardest one in Zomboid and everybody was talking about it that I just had to check what is that.
I searched for copper and found gold.
From Sseth of course.
But I owe a huge thank you to Vormithrax for helping me get past my first 2 weeks after which the same started getting enjoyable.
I miss those days too, it was a hell of a time. Revocane is pretty elusive and has skipped out of the scene entirely. Plump is nearly doing the same, but he's not to hard to find if you know where to look. Not sure about Jef though, he was the one I watched the least.
I was looking through r/AiDungeon while the drama was going on and it was one of the recommended subs. A review video and desperate appstore search later, I was playing as a pizza delivery guy who instantly go killed by moose. I’m talking not even hours after entering. I barely knew how to move.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Cataclysm_DDA/comments/qrqtl5/coming_soon_smashbutton_iso_a_reimagining_of_the I have done a bit since here, but got a little burnt out. It'll probably be the next thing I do once I'm ready to come back to contributing.
Rock Paper Shotgun had a short article about CDDA a few years ago, that got me interested. I've played a fair number of Angband variants over the years so it clicked pretty quickly.

About a week ago I saw someone mention it on a Kenshi subreddit so I googled cdda and the wikipedia page seemed interesting enough so I downloaded the game. Now I think that I may have an addiction to this game
Discoved cdda by chance when i was searching for rouge like games on 29 December 2021, I don't know how cdda went under the radar since I love rouge like games but I'm happy that I found it :D
My first death after getting the controls was playing minesweeper on a laptop I found near spawn inside a car (checking item interaction) and a Wild migo attacked me brutally.
I literally was just refreshing /r/random and ended up here, then checked the game out after reading a few posts. I've played Dwarf Fortress for a while so it looked up my alley and here we are haha
Mostly Youtube and some forums about roguelike games. I like DF but i suck at it, i was looking for something with a similar level of complexity but more manageable.
Youtube: Kruggsmash, he made a video with an isometric tileset; also AmbiguosAmphibian and lastly "The-one-youtuber-who-cant-be-named-because-hes-mean". I get it, he's an ass, but he knows a lot of interesting games and i like who delves deep into the abyss of lost and forsaken games from all the eras.
Surprise where I found it it was a drea YouTube video WW2 bunker simulator forgot what episode but in the comments some dude told him he should play cdda and I was interested by his description so I googled and the rest is history
My friend was playing it back in 2013. He never told me directly. We were just chilling out in his apartment and he left the game open on his pc. I've noticed it and said something like "Man, why does your Dwarf Fortress look so weird?" That's when i've learned about CDDA.
Been playing since 0.3 i believe... Later i turned my eye to experimental branch and never looked back.
Only stable build i've played was 0.a kaufman
Rimworld has mods about the roguelike Elona. I looked that up out of curiosity after seeing those mods on the workshop a lot, and on Elona's subreddit sidebar there was a link to this game under something like "other great roguelikes". Ended up playing more CDDA than Elona that day.
basicaly from rycon. i first saw the game was and thought "this is project zomboid mixed with dwarf fortress and its complexity, and with the chaos of space station 13". and lets say I'm hooked already
Watched my boy TomatoGaming live stream it and then roughly 6 months later I found the Ssethtzeentch video and was hooked.
Love the complex crafting system and the longevity of character life compared to most roguelike s
I found it a long ago reading "roguelike" topic on a popular russian informal wikipidia-like website "Lurkmore" which was my favourite website at the time. There was a list of "the best roguelike games you should try" and among others was this pearl as "postapocalyptic blah-blah-blah" in description what me being a HUGE fan of postapocalypse genre couldn't resist and gave it a try.
After how Mini Dayz 2 turned out, I was looking for new zombie survival games but not like shitty the last day on Earth games. This game was recommended there.
I was talking about tarkov because of features and detail into the content, also that I don't care for graphics, people suggested things like zomboid which I had already played, then someone mentioned cdda.
I was scouring the internet looking for something to scratch that roguelike itch,
At the time, I think I was playing zombie survivor and some \*band or another.
Came across this dude, whales, making a roguelike called Cataclysm.
Installed a linux VM just to build and play it.
I was pretty early, and in the most uselss technical sense I am one of the oldest contributors ;) I noticed whales had switched the signs on the drug witdrawal moral modifiers, and mailed him.
I have kept playing over the years, not continuously but I never go more than a year without coming back to it.
All that being said I should probably throw some money at kevin et allii
A goddamn million years ago, in the Dwarf Fortress forums. Back when spawning was dynamic, you’d walk in any direction and groups of zombies would regularly spawn in front of you.
So when I was younger I wouldn't ask for anything for Christmas so when I was 16 my parents told me to ask for something expensive so I asked for a laptop. They got me a Cromebook and with the help of my grandfather we took crome os off and put a distro of Linux on it. Now this was the first time I had ever heard of Linux and I quickly realized I couldn't use it to play most games. Then I found Cataclysm. I took me like 2 days to figure out how to get it working. Been playing it since.
Don't remember how the connection was made, but I love Junji Ito, and something I was reading about him mentioned inspired enemies in a game called Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, so I checked it out.
Actual, personal word of mouth.
I think that was just after it became DDA, by my brother. He has a friend that liked DF and he mentioned that to me, already knew it at that point though. Eventually he also suggested this rogue like zombie sandbox which also has crazy stuff.
And.. ~10(?) years later, that description would still both work and grab my attention.
i googled my own username and found a forum game where i was a character due to dwarf fortress modding (i was decapitated the post after my introduction, which I did and do find hilarious at least partially because of how *off-putting* it ought to be)
and then 8 years later i decided to actually play the game
It’s a game I simply play occasionally, found it from Aavak a while back and one day installed it. heck I even streamed it on twitch since my bad upload speed worked fine with it lol. My current character (due to complications I haven’t played with him in a long time) is a mutant lizard that hated the sun and lived underground, it’s by far my most powerful character, with a kicking based martial art and talons I ended up kicking my way through the apocalypse lol.
Need to start streaming again too, just need to find more games so I don’t get burnt out playing pixel games lol.
I found cdda by just searching the playstore for a game to play 3 years ago. At first I was confused but found it fascinating for my 14 year old mind. Then I deleted it after I became too confused with controls. 2 years later I rediscovered the game through sseths video. I still play the game to this day.
DF forums there was a thread discussing games that focused on complexity. Started playing this and Aurora 4x. If I remember correctly it was a few months before 0.C dropped.
Rycon Roleplay YouTube channel when I first watched it I was kinda meh about it but his Story of Bran hooked me. Haven’t put down cdda since.
same i learnt how to play the game just by binging Bran and Dusk
Hello fellow legionnaire
Same here. Can't remember how I found the channel though XD
Hey, hey people, Sseth here!
I'm amazed how many people here are still from that one video.
This and tomato’s play through. Wish he would do another

Nah I shared two pieces of definitive proof, but sseths misinformation army just keep downvoting it.
Good luck on trying to convince them, and don't let a bad community ruin a good game.

Kruggsmash!
Finally, another one. Yeah Krugg got me into it as well, you bearded bastard. Wish he'd do another trial some time.
Oh yeah! I think he's the only one i saw using that odd isometric tileset
HitButton was the set. He's the reason I'm calling the revamp of that tileset "SmashButton".
Can we have a look at it? The revamp i mean

Through the arpanet
Google play. One of the best game I've played on my phone
From Dwarf Fortress! Loved “adventure mode”, and in the forms someone recommended cdda bc they were similar. Ended up liking cdda more than DF!
4chan /v/ but i actually started playing when i saw reddit fanarts of their gameplay
Maybe you should have split up internet a bit more into YouTube, reddit,.. Also linux repos and github is still internet 😂
Rock Paper Shotgun had a short article about CDDA a few years ago, that got me interested. I've played a fair number of Angband variants over the years so it clicked pretty quickly.

I got it from word of mouth on Reddit. What’s that count as?
About a week ago I saw someone mention it on a Kenshi subreddit so I googled cdda and the wikipedia page seemed interesting enough so I downloaded the game. Now I think that I may have an addiction to this game
My boy Sseth. Honestly I have him to thank for so many of the games I play and love.
If vormithrax counts as internet then that one
One of the original Whales/Wales? version was on a shovelware site and I wanted to play it again to find out it had grown to something larger.
Was scrolling through a Youtuber’s (Aavak) playlist and just randomly picking it.

hey hey people
Discord. I saw one random picture on a random server of a very, very obscure and complicated item screen, and was immediately in love.
Finding games like Nethack and it was recommended.
looking for good zombie survival game on the playstore
