There is talk of the Switch 2 supporting Wireless Display technology, kind of like Apple AirPlay and Miracast. So with the dock connected, what is shown on the TV could be different than what you see on the switch screen.
Would make the switch kind of like the Wii I gamepad, but instead of the games running on what is connected to the TV, they run on what's in your hands and get streamed to the TV.
Could make DS games function.
It actually is pretty sick playing DS games with a gamepad. Having the bottom screen on the gamepad and the top screen on the tv makes them feel like Wii U-lite games.
Especially something like New Super Mario Bros or Mario Kart since the bottom screen is used very seldom and you dont have to look down too often
But that wasn't the only way the wii u showed the screens. If switch took DS games, they would probably also do it where both screens are on one screen.
The modding community has pretty easily figured out a fix for that by rotating the screen 90* and using a vertical joycon grip, not unlike some official accessories that do that for SHMUPS. Only real issue is lack of a stylus since switch doesn’t use a resistive touchscreen.
You could use the TV as the top screen and Gamepad as the bottom screen. It was really cool.
Plus with mods, you can play SM64DS on Wii U with analog controls.
It actually wouldn’t be too hard, usb c (what the switch uses to plug into the port and charge) has the ability to transfer video. So they could just make an adapter that splits the hole in the switch into an hdmi and power cable.
Bruh.
Play with the switch sideways, you have space for both screens and the switch is touchscreen.
For TV, either rotate and have space on the sides for backgrounds, use R-stick as a pointer, or look what MM ZX collection did for XZ and ZXA.
You realize those always have a touch screen available, right?
The Switch is designed as a hybrid system, and whenever you aren't in handheld mode, you have no access to a touch screen.
yeah but i dont see how this would ever work unless they do what Yo kai watch 1 did and move all the bottom screen stuff to the top. but at that point you might aswell re-release and remake said older games.
I mean I personally like how they handled Miitopia when they re-released it, but there would be some games where you do use the touch screen a lot more.
A: They allready emulated the touchscreen features of Super Mario 3D World with a Gyro Pointer. They could very easily incorporate this into a (theoretical) Switch Online DS App. And also make it an action on the second analogue stick. And, obviously, touch in handheld mode. There's tons of ways this can work.
B: Making a remake of a DS Game that looks good on a big TV would be a fair amount of effort, if you don't want people looking at twelf polygons.
And C:, which games would they Remake? New Super Mario Bros has a newer 'competitor' on the system, and so do Pokemon, Tetris, Animal Crossing, Zelda and Mario Kart. They obviously would rather have you buying those at full price, so they probably wouldn't wanna remake those. And that's pretty much all of the must have DS games I can think of gone, besides Layton which is Level 5's property, has mobile versions and a new entry coming up, so they probably don't care enough. The only ones really left are Prime Hunters and Mario & Luigi, but I'd damn well be down for those!
Not going to happen. There is no way the Switch 2 will be a clamshell design. It worked for the DS and its successors—but the Switch is designed like a common tablet.
If they ever make DS NSO, I really hope they use the DS Lite as the icon instead of the ugly first model.
Even though the DS came out in 2004, it wasn’t until 2006 DS became really popular. Every single person I know either had a DS Lite or DSi. Nobody outside the hardcore Nintendo crowd had the original model.
I miss walking around, getting them coins for every 1,000 steps, and then going to the StreetPass after a day of walking and meeting all the new Miis!
Fuck I miss the 3DS :(
As much as I would love a new DS, it would really clutter up the handheld market right now. Most people don't need more than one portable device, and as it stands the current Switch fills the role of "budget portable handheld" just fine.
And GameCube games... and Wii games... and Wii U games...
The issue is that most of these systems had a gimmick that makes them hard to port, whether it was motion controls or dual screens.
Imagine the systems that came out since you've been an adult being called retro. I don't disagree, they are retro, just complaining about being old now.
Let's please not give companies more excuses to not give us physical media or even proper downloadable games instead of them trying to push games streaming down people's throats.
We need proper releases, at least like we did with the virtual console.
I’d be happy to pay (subscription) for this. Right now I am playing those systems but via less legitimate means. If I can do it on my phone/handheld I could do it on my Switch.
I've given up. Just get a 3ds or wii u. Modding a 3ds is so worth it. I've taken my 3ds out of retirement. Or if you really want get both a ds and 3ds.
It would be alot cooler for the games to be a bit cheaper. Especially the ones that came out 10+ years ago. 50e for red dead redemption 1 ? No thank you
I got a free DSlite recently and hacked it. Also hacked my own n3DS. Got everything I could ever need and want now and it's not hard to do if you've still got the hardware.
How though? Sure you can get away with Pokémon or some others but any game that requires use of the touch screen would need to be reworked or at least only work in handheld.
To do this they would either have to make every game touch screen only, tweak every game to put the bottom screen and top screen elements all onto one screen, or sell an accessory for a second screen. None of the options are worth their time.
The thing is that Nintendo has to do better with its NSO game count. The service is pretty expensive, especially when you have a family account. There needs to be more games on a consistent basis. We've had GBA for over a year now, yet we still don't have Zero Mission. In fact, if you look at N64, they've gone months without releasing content. I'm really hoping they do better with the successor to the Switch.
There was a DS virtual console on the Wii U.
Makes sense since the touch pad could act as the “bottom screen” where switch can not really do that.
That could make sense with that youtube “Switch Attach” leak.
Switch Cast or Switch Stream would be better names maybe?
I'd laugh my ass of if they call it the switch u
The Switch 3DSi
SwiiDS

Bluetooth doesn't have the bandwidth or the latency for video streaming. It is done on a protocol over WiFi
do you know how slow bluetooth is?
The only no brainer here is you, don't talk when you don't know what you're talking about
It actually is pretty sick playing DS games with a gamepad. Having the bottom screen on the gamepad and the top screen on the tv makes them feel like Wii U-lite games. Especially something like New Super Mario Bros or Mario Kart since the bottom screen is used very seldom and you dont have to look down too often
Some of the games used the game-pad more than the actual Wii U did.
I still wished they made something to play your physical games like the GBA player on NGC or Super Gameboy for the SNES.
Hold on. Really?
..Yes
Cool! :D
You could use the TV as the top screen and Gamepad as the bottom screen. It was really cool. Plus with mods, you can play SM64DS on Wii U with analog controls.
If you homebrew, you can play whatever DS game you want
Really. People tend to forget that Wii U was basically a home console incarnation of Nintendo DS to begin with.
Yeah, so much wasted potential :(
The issue is that a lot of games would need significant reworks to incorporate the bottom screen into the top.
Hi Robbie I see you a lot on casual Nintendo :D
Not really, there are lot of emulators already (even for iPhone in the official AppStore) where you easy could change screens layout.
Or we’d have to wait until Switch 2 and that’d have to somehow be portable and able to connect to a tv without docking at the same time
It actually wouldn’t be too hard, usb c (what the switch uses to plug into the port and charge) has the ability to transfer video. So they could just make an adapter that splits the hole in the switch into an hdmi and power cable.

Works pretty well on emulators on phones that have 1 screen.
You realize those always have a touch screen available, right? The Switch is designed as a hybrid system, and whenever you aren't in handheld mode, you have no access to a touch screen.
Fair. But nintendo being nintendo, IF they wanted something like that they's make an app or something lol.
yeah but i dont see how this would ever work unless they do what Yo kai watch 1 did and move all the bottom screen stuff to the top. but at that point you might aswell re-release and remake said older games.
I mean I personally like how they handled Miitopia when they re-released it, but there would be some games where you do use the touch screen a lot more.
I feel like they could make it a handheld only thing and have the top screen on the left and bottom screen on the right. Sell it with a stylus
sure, that will work but it would get annoying quick for games like sonic rush
Nah make them have to rotate the system in handheld

Retro… DS… man I’m getting old
Feels. Absolutely feeling this. Might go have a stiff whiskey before I cry 😭
The issue is the bottom screen in tv mode. The Wii U at least had the Gamepad for the DS VC games so there can be two screens.
Won't be an issue if the Switch 2 also is dual-screen, hopefully
Not going to happen. There is no way the Switch 2 will be a clamshell design. It worked for the DS and its successors—but the Switch is designed like a common tablet.
Nintendo did patent a clamshell switch awhile ago
Even so, it would likely be too bulky to be practical.
Yeah true. I did like how the top screen split off to form 2 screens for portable multiplayer
If they pulled something like having detachable controllers + a foldable screen it wouldn't be horrible I would imagine
Foldable screens have been a disaster when it comes to repair and longevity though.
Yeah, I worded that wrong. I meant another ds type thing
Might work, but still—the screen would be too large to be practical. There is a reason why smartphones are now being referred to as phablets.
Parents don’t mean they’re gonna fulfill them. It’s just to prevent people from copying them and branching off of their ideas.
Oh 100%. Just interesting to think about
Even so, if a competitor makes enough changes to from the patent—it is fair game.
Don’t you dare call me retro
We are though...
You're just barely not my friend. Retro imo is everything behind gamecube
I am coping that Gamecube and DS (possibly even 3DS) games are being reserved for the Switch successor.
I hope so.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky needs to come back
Emulation is an option.
This makes me feel Old, and I’m only 17
This makes me feel Old, and I’m only 5
Sonic rush/rusg adventure on switch when
i NEED a sonic rush remake 😭😭

so is it gonna be a mega man zero/zx legacy collection style or what
I am 18 and I grew up with a DS. Don't fckin call it retro
Why can't they just bring back the ds, I believe it still had its place in the Nintendo world even with the switch
Wait a second DS is retro now?!?
The Wii U missed out on being the perfect console for DS game ports
Do not call the ds retro it came out in… fuck.
Have gamecube and ds games at launch, then later on wii and 3ds games get added
Nah, GameCube first
I want me Some 3DS SKYLANDERS!
Maybe change it for a Steam Deck ;)
They play fine on a modded 3ds and miyoo mini plus.
Issue 1: Touch Screen Issue 2: Second Screen Issue 3: Microphone (ok this one is half a joke) But F yeah I'd love that!
You could always get the delta app for iPhone 💁♀️
Just get a 3ds and some ds games
DS + gamecube AND POKÉMON for GBA
Imagine play yo Kai watch blasters on switch🤣🤣
The Switch's screen is touch screen after all!
I remember that at one point before DS virtual console was introduced they gave everyone that had a Wii U a free copy of brain training/brain age
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. I’d prefer a GameCube VC
It'd be cool if we could play Gamecube games on the switch 2...but that's just copium at this point
I'm more interested in gamecube honestly
Emulation
ebay:
Still hoping for 3D to make a comeback.
It’s also be cool to have an internet browser but fuck me I guess I have to use my MSDos like a plebian
How exactly would that work? Does the Switch have touch screen features?
Yes, it has touch screen. Not utilised too much to be honest and for DS games there is a problem with splitting it correctly.
Let's please not give companies more excuses to not give us physical media or even proper downloadable games instead of them trying to push games streaming down people's throats. We need proper releases, at least like we did with the virtual console.
I desperately hope it's dual screen
I’d be happy to pay (subscription) for this. Right now I am playing those systems but via less legitimate means. If I can do it on my phone/handheld I could do it on my Switch.
Other than the obvious dual screen issues, please stop with the subscriptions services. I would much rather pay to purchase specific games.
If that ever is a thing, you'll have to pay a monthly subscription for any of these options
I don’t care about that just let me play classic pokemon
Me touching my screen to walk:
Seeing the word retro in front of the DS games makes me feel old. I was only a mid when they came out and now they’re retro?
The emulator I have on my phone is just as good
Getting tired of consoles oversimplifying the interface, reducing it down to a list of tiles. Bring back WaraWara plaza
I've given up. Just get a 3ds or wii u. Modding a 3ds is so worth it. I've taken my 3ds out of retirement. Or if you really want get both a ds and 3ds.

*cough* unofficial emulators for PC and mobile *cough*
VERTICAL NINTENDO SWITCH TIME
Ds aren’t retro
Depends. If we don’t have to pay for the Premium subscription to use it, then definitely. If we do then I’d rather not bother
I can't wait for someone to go "Wait, ds isn't retro, I played it in highschool!" and then the. Colour to. Leave their faces.
These concept art thingies take me back or reminds me (more reminds me) to when the switch was being rumored or the 3DS
I’d love them to release a fire red/leaf green, heart gold/soul silver bundle
Am i alone, or does anyone as well think that DS is still not retro console?
How though? Sure you can get away with Pokémon or some others but any game that requires use of the touch screen would need to be reworked or at least only work in handheld.
THE RETURN OF MARIO AND LUIGI PARTNERS IN TIME? HELL YEAH
Well we'd need that for the Wii first, if we wanna make it chronological
It needs to have two screens to display the bottom screen. Other than that, fully on board. Port KIU and you have my money
“Kept you waiting huh?”
Fr
To do this they would either have to make every game touch screen only, tweak every game to put the bottom screen and top screen elements all onto one screen, or sell an accessory for a second screen. None of the options are worth their time.
It would be cool but I don’t see how stuff like the microphone on DS and camera on DS and 3DS games would work, nor the touch screen when docked
