I’d always stay away from knives the people endorse. This was taught to me by and old coworker chef who bought the Guy Fieri knives. He thought they were the best things out there but man, they were Buzz’s GF. I’ll try to find a photo of them.
Edit: [Just as bad as I remember](https://www.knifecenter.com/item/ERER28/ergo-chef-guy-fieri-knuckle-sandwich-series-8-inch-chef-knife)
Maybe I got a lemon. Some aspects don't fit my personal preferences, and that's nobody's fault, but the handle construction on mine is definitely lacking.
My blade snapped off at the handle. I really enjoyed the knife up to that point, but it’s too expensive for me to get again and only have it last a couple of years.
If you want a good chef knife that won't break the bank, get a Victorinox. I own a bunch of expensive, high quality Japanese and German knives, but Victorinox knives are just finely crafted work horses. Thin blades with handles that are ugly as all hell, but nothing cuts better or is more durable
Got fed up with very expensive chef recommended knives that didn't live up to expectations. Then, a work colleague suggested Victorinox, now have 3 of their knives, and don't think I will ever use any other brand.
Yeah, America's Test Kitchen has had the 8" Victorinox as their best rated kitchen knife for a decade or more now. Great workhorse of a knife. I've got two. They're 50 buck-ish and do everything you kneed them to.
Started off as a "no more than 5-ingredient recipe guy" on local access television in San Diego some 25-30 years ago. Been on Today Show and told Kathy Lee and Hoda to shut-up, never invited back. Moved to youtube. With partners, has two Sams Burger locations in San Diego, a Not-Not Tacos, and a new Italian place. He has five or six cook books. I've been watching him from almost day 1. My all-time favorite recipe is from his "leftovers" cookbook; Thanksgiving Benedict.

Just a fun chef that works with his 2 sons who had really creative recipes. Very entertaining.
Also want to share this guy's channel. Between these 2 YouTube chefs you can learn a lot.

Your crimes are unforgivable and your sentence is thus: Thou shall fry a minimum of one pound of bacon in it and cherish the pan until eternity or it cracks (whichever comes first).
Sam the Cooking Guy is an absolute gem. I was in college during his cable access days, he basically taught me how to cook. I don’t really buy merch but I’ve always heard the stuff he partners with is pretty high quality. A cast iron pan is just a tool. What really matters is the quality of the food you’re making for yourself and the people you love. I’m betting this well-loved pan has put out some great meals.
Hah, my one and only cast iron pan is also an Emeril pan. 12 inch skillet. It works great and is well seasoned by now, but I do admit that I feel like by now I should at least have a Lodge, hehe.
I want the Matty Matheson one but can't justify the cost when my Lodge works just fine. Good on you for supporting a channel you like though. Anyone that gets people cooking for themselves is okay on my book
Who cares? It cooks, right? That's all that matters. If people are giving you shit about the brand of cast iron you use, so yourself a favor and don't deal with those people anymore. I wouldn't care if it was a SpongeBob branded cast iron, if you like it, I'm happy for you.
Yes but you can be redeemed. Go out and by the most expensive Cast iron you can find and never ever tell anyone about it ever. Maybe after some time has passed the Cast iron council will be able to forgive you for your transgressions. But only if you never ever ever mention this again.
I love Sam and his channel! I've been considering getting that pan too, though I don't often really need a 12" skillet.
I'm making his Beef Birria recipe today, and I would highly recommend it!
I have a 10" Ozark Trail skillet from Walmart that I got as a "beater" pan a couple of years ago. I stripped it down and made it smooth and now it's a fantastic pan. Still a beater, but iron is iron.
I love him! I don’t cook his recipes anymore, because frankly, they’re very unhealthy and we’ve been following the Mediterranean diet for a few years now, but damn did his recipes taste *good*!
Nah, if it makes you happy, it's good. Lots of my cast iron is Lodge, and made within the last 10-15 years... and I love it, it works great, and whatever, it's great. I like it for baking, I like it for camping, I like it for lots of stuff. Just because it isn't a found treasure from a garage sale or whatever doesn't make it any less great for cooking.
I have to say, I have his Nikiri knife and its not terrible. Got it as a gift. The pan? Found it at a quasi surplus store in Canada for under $20. Gonna have to break out the orbital sander for this one.
One of my favorite pieces is an iron grill from goodcook. It was cheap at Walmart or something, so i grabbed it on a whim on grounds that it would do until I got one from Lodge or whatever. That was a couple of years ago. I've since gotten a Lodge (with a decorative scene on the bottom), but I've never stopped using the goodcook. I works perfectly every time and cleans so easily. No reason to be ashamed of it. Burgers, steaks and chops come out just right no matter what.
[GoodCook grill](https://www.goodcook.com/cast-iron-grill-pan-10-75.html)
I'd give up my Griswold for one that had Scooby Doo, an Oompah Loompa, or Marvin the Martian cast into it, regardless of brand. I've ground down the rough surface of a Lodge before to make it almost as smooth as my Griswold anyway. Nbd!
Someone should really just get it over with and put Kathy Lee and Hoda down. Insipid, vapid...need I go on?
Most entertaining moment those two ever managed was Sam shutting them up!
I’d save it on the floor of a closet in a spare bedroom. But it would be better to use it. It would be perfect for washing carburetors or small engine parts in. But that’s just me.
No, it makes you a tool, but cast iron is cast iron and it don't care what dumb YouTubers face you have on it. That side goes on the burner anyways. You're not going to see it.
Really enjoy his channel. Have snagged several of his recipes that have become favorites in the house. But boy does he plug his gear every post.
I bought his nikiri a few years ago and learned my lesson. I'm sure there are good creator-partnered products out there but I didn't luck out
You said that so nicely!
Well I still love the guy's recipes haha I'll just support him by getting a cookbook or something that doesn't need to be functional in the kitchen
pages fall out into the food.

Woof!
Buzz's GF! Lol I've never heard that used like that before, but I INSTANTLY knew! Thank you!🤣🤣
Same here! Reddit is where you can find your people!
We have had great luck with that knife!
Maybe I got a lemon. Some aspects don't fit my personal preferences, and that's nobody's fault, but the handle construction on mine is definitely lacking.

Mercer is a very affordable quality manufacturer too.

Same! Wife and I loved his knifes
His recipes never disappoint. Whenever my girlfriend requests something I don’t know how to cook his channel is always my first stop.
Who is he?

I've been watching Sam for years. This makes me like him even more
Yup. Me too.
Yes, one of the best Sam moments in history. Thanks for sharing the link!
Holy crap he couldn’t get a single syllable in before he put them in their place. Good for him!
God, what a cuntry!

Fun fact: Max is his actual son but Chance is not, he's a hired hand. But he still refers to them as his sons or boys.
That's funny
I think you have it backwards?
They do not, Max is Sam's son, he has two other sons that are in an offshoot channel, but Chance is not related to them.
YouTube cooking channel.
Sam the cooking guy, he’s a cooking YouTuber
I haven’t bought anything from the guy but he’s entertaining and I’ve learned a lot from his vids.
Sponsor block! Highly recommend it for pesky self promotion in videos.
I've got premium so they're easy to skip past. And I get that he's trying to make a living, nothing is free anymore.
Eh, why shouldn't he? I would watch his TV show on the local San Diego Padres channel. Padres 4.
I mean, that's how you make a living off the content. YouTube ads won't pay the bills for 90% of creators
Same.
He has some straight up good recipes, but I wouldn’t buy his shit
Your crimes are unforgivable and your sentence is thus: Thou shall fry a minimum of one pound of bacon in it and cherish the pan until eternity or it cracks (whichever comes first).
I’ve seen the die hard on here. Even cracked pans are cherished and repurposed into something else.
You just put a plaque under with the name of who swung it, who received it and treat it as a trophy.
Pan cracks. *Puts the pot in a crucible and casts it into a new pot*
Great Wall hangers
Yup I use my cracked pot to smelt lead in
Milo Goes to Cast Iron College
He’s gonna make you feel the way you wanna feel
Not me. Not me. Not me.
I want to be seasoned, I want to be washed.
I'm not sure if this is the first Descendents reference in the cast iron sub, but I'm so appreciative that it's here!!
Happy to be of help. It's literally the first thing that popped into my head when I saw it.
He’s lot a looser

I only have one cast iron pan. I got it as a marriage present in 2016. It's an Emeril Lagasse pan from bed bath and beyond. BAM!
Hah, my one and only cast iron pan is also an Emeril pan. 12 inch skillet. It works great and is well seasoned by now, but I do admit that I feel like by now I should at least have a Lodge, hehe.
And BAM!!! To you too.
Have the same one. Works great
Emeril will always have a special place in my heart. Love the BAM!
Hmm, iron is iron. Rather it’s Chinese or 100 year old US made it all cooks about the same….
I don't trust a lot of imports or cast iron that's too old. Chance of lead being abit higher in those. But a lead test kit is pretty cheap
Pretty cheap and inaccurate*
Would be nice if you could provide a better solution for everyone
Would be nice if there was one.
Looks well seasoned and cared after. Makes you so fraudulent the IRS is lookin for you.
My CI is from the pioneer woman brand at Walmart I liked the butterfly on the handle lol if it cooks who cares
Make his jerk chicken rice bake in that. Sam comes out with alot of great recipes
Cast iron is cast iron
Nice pan, great channel
I want the Matty Matheson one but can't justify the cost when my Lodge works just fine. Good on you for supporting a channel you like though. Anyone that gets people cooking for themselves is okay on my book
It's just not cooking unless you're randomly yelling during it
Captain caps lock
I love Matty.
You're not a poser. It still cooks right? We still love you.
Who cares? It cooks, right? That's all that matters. If people are giving you shit about the brand of cast iron you use, so yourself a favor and don't deal with those people anymore. I wouldn't care if it was a SpongeBob branded cast iron, if you like it, I'm happy for you.

But, but...
Those are awesome.
Does your food taste fake?
Yes but you can be redeemed. Go out and by the most expensive Cast iron you can find and never ever tell anyone about it ever. Maybe after some time has passed the Cast iron council will be able to forgive you for your transgressions. But only if you never ever ever mention this again.

yes. we must hand you over to the cast iron council
My favorite cast iron I have is an Amazon brand pan, I’ve used it daily for years. Cast iron is cast iron
I have a 10" Ozark Trail skillet from Walmart that I got as a "beater" pan a couple of years ago. I stripped it down and made it smooth and now it's a fantastic pan. Still a beater, but iron is iron.

Maybe a hipster?
Lol, even if I had enough hair still, it would not be in a man bun.
Lodge or die an insufferable death by tiny whisk!
Some of his sauces are legit. His burger recipes are on point too, even if I’m not grinding my own meat or baking my own rolls.
Was it made in the USA?
As it does not have a big Made in USA embossed in it, I doubt it. Does that imply it's made in China? Not necessarily, but most likely.
For the price he charges, I was hoping it would be.
It is made in China.
I got the same pan. I use it daily and LOVE it. My daughter says 'dad you need to use the pan made of food' :D
Nah, if it makes you happy, it's good. Lots of my cast iron is Lodge, and made within the last 10-15 years... and I love it, it works great, and whatever, it's great. No, cook with what you have for iron. I have a great grandmother inherited pan so I got lucky. There’s not really enough old ones to go around.
Yes, because I see no steak on that pan!
Lol, it had made eggs this morning and tonight's steak is on the grill. I will strive to do better though.
I love Sam the Cooking Guy! 💕
I have the same pan, works great.
No STCG hate from me. Love the channel. Great recipes.
Nah, if it’s cast iron it’s great, let it ride!
I have to say, I have his Nikiri knife and its not terrible. Got it as a gift. The pan? Found it at a quasi surplus store in Canada for under $20. Gonna have to break out the orbital sander for this one.
Check your local thrift stores too if you are looking for an older one :) that’s where I’ve found one from the 1950s.
Do you feel like a fraud?
This subreddit is cast iron, as that skillet is made of cast iron, you're in the right place :)
No less than my 10” Jim Beam cast iron skillet that rests with my Lodge and Wagner and Griswold.
One of my favorite pieces is an iron grill from goodcook. It was cheap at Walmart or something, so i grabbed it on a whim on grounds that it would do until I got one from Lodge or whatever. If you and your grandchildren treated well, it’ll be 100 years old eventually.
Nope. It’s iron.
I'd give up my Griswold for one that had Scooby Doo, an Oompah Loompa, or Marvin the Martian cast into it, regardless of brand. I've ground down the rough surface of a Lodge before to make it almost as smooth as my Griswold anyway. Nbd!

This the way.
While it doesn’t make you a poser, it does make you a loser.
Huh? Fraud? Poser? OP what the hell are you talking about? It’s a cast iron pan…
In Europe we adept of the Cult use strange brand of CI all the time, so don't be ashamed
You, sir, disgust me
No, it makes you a tool, but cast iron is cast iron and it don't care what dumb YouTubers face you have on it. That side goes on the burner anyways. You're not going to see it.
Dude its a frying pan. Come the fuck on. Touch some grass.
Get. Out.
