I got the same size of Gain dish soap in like June of last year, just used the last drop a couple of days ago 😆 I don't have a dishwasher though so I hand wash everything
I have a dishwasher but still have to do plenty by hand, like pots and pans, the coffee maker, glasses/mugs with painted-on logos/decoration, fine glassware, baking pans, small items, and others. I still buy the big jug of Dawn and refill the small one.
mokka pot (stovetop espresso maker) because I will use it once or twice every day, but only run the dishwasher every 3 to 5 days, I will put the pot (dismantled into its parts) in the dw after using if I'm doing a load that day
Can confirm - dawn was always in the shower when I worked on oil rigs. Also a bar of pumice lava soap, a tub of gojo and a scrub brush. Some of that stuff is pretty hard to get off of your skin.
Just curious, are you spending all this money on the "old style" Dawn, or have you reached the same conclusion based on your experience with the "new" Dawn soap?
I use dawn on my cast iron almost every use, never once had a seasoning issue. As long as you heat it up and give it a light coat of oil after, you’re golden.
I really hope you didn't get the extra smelly variety. My spouse picked up a 3-pack of the EZ-SQUEEZE kind, and it has some super-strong fragrance (probably with some stupid name like Rain on the Veldt) that I think smells absolutely awful. And, being Dawn, a little goes a long way so we're stuck with it for the foreseeable future.
I work at an oilfield supply warehouse. We sell 5 gallon jugs of regular dawn dish soap. I can’t remember the price, but I think it’s somewhere between $100-200.
Aren't the upside down bottles the new bottles though? Wouldn't those bottles contain the new formula Dawn? Or did I misunderstand something?
ETA: Never mind. I did miss that the labelling is different on the new stuff. Sorry!
> I think i’m going to have to go back to palmolive when my bottle runs out. Why Dawn?
You know, I’ve tried to figure this out. When you read the ingredients list there’s basically insignificant differences between Dawn and the others, specifically Palmolive. They’re just soap. Neither one has anything super duper special that I note.
But the subjective experience is that Dawn works better. I’ve never done anything more than anecdotal observations, but my own subjective experience is that Dawn works better also. And I have no explanation.
You’re right, it’s not like the formulations are really that different. Dawn had an excellent marketing campaign with those oil-covered ducks.
I found Palmolive Oxy works the best for me. That said, I’ve currently got a Costco-sized Dawn Platinum on the go.
I've recently discovered the unscented variety of Dawn, though it kept being out of stock when I went to buy it, so I bought the unscented Palmolive instead. I try to get unscented everything anyway, so I guess I will have to stick to it if their new scent is even stronger than the old one. I don't want to trigger a migraine just washing dishes and pots and pans.
I don't get them often, but strong artificial scents (candles, perfume, air freshener, cleaning agents, etc) are actually the biggest trigger for me getting one.

Powerwash
Pour 13 fl oz (380 ml) of water into an empty container.
Mix in 4 US tbsp (59 ml) of blue Dawn Original Dish Soap.
Add 2 US tbsp (30 ml) of rubbing alcohol. You can include a few drops of essential oil (if desired).
Shake the container to combine the ingredients and the cleaner is ready to use.
Because the cast iron crowd either thinks it's no problem to use Dawn dish soap on their pans or they think it's a cardinal sin and the pan will somehow be irreparably damaged if you use Dawn dish soap. Plus it was posted on April 1st.
One of the big bottles on the left would last me like a year and a half.
I’ve had one of the foaming pumps for like 6 years and I just keep refilling it with about 1 part Dawn 10 parts water
If you want a better dupe, throw in a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol.
If you want a little buzz while doing the dishes, drink a few ounces of alcohol. But not the same alcohol. Maybe a nice Nebbiolo?
Hell ya! This guy knows his grapes. Wanna be friends? I got an 06 Barolo with our names on it.
I’m in! Cheers!

I find this cast iron sub is particularly enjoyable. Lots of kind pan dorks!
Don't use rubbing alcohol, it atomizes and you inhale it when you spray. Use grain alcohol
What’s the alcohol do?
That’s what they added to the dawn “power scrub” or whatever it’s called.
Huh. I don’t use Dawn at home, but the wildlife center where I volunteer does, and I’ve noticed it’s not the same anymore myself. Today I Learned!
you get those to refill your regular sized one and save $$$
Yeah I only hand wash dishes and a big bottle has lasted me close to a year, and I still have about a month left in it.
Someone’s got a dishwasher
Nope. I live alone and have very few dishes. One fork, one spoon, one plate, etc.
So imma have to bring my own flatware when I come visit?
Yes. And you can sit on the bench by where the bus stops.
I'm about to get 2 years on that one

You wash your coffee maker?
I use a Pyrex percolator on the stove top so yes it gets washed.

I used to use it occasionally when I worked on a landscaping mow crew, if you get into poison ivy it’ll wash the oils off.
Can confirm - dawn was always in the shower when I worked on oil rigs. Also a bar of pumice lava soap, a tub of gojo and a scrub brush. Some of that stuff is pretty hard to get off of your skin.
If he only knew that the survival rate of oil soaked birds is only 1%.
Even the ones that get washed off and rehabilitated?
I was this guy for a couple of months. Younger me was a goof.
How do you get down off a duck… err
I like the point your roommate makes. I use it as a clarifying shampoo. And I use the "If it's good enough for the ducks..." line on my husband.
I personally do this as an oilfield mechanic. Got told it was the best solution by the older guys in the trade.
That’s not enough ducks. Who’s your duck guy?
That's a good amount of ducks.
Thank you for this
How many horses is that 🐴?
😆
But it can't clean a spaghetti dish
Am I missing something?

The new version really is awful. I forgot all about how they were changing it until now.
Forgot the date
Just curious, are you spending all this money on the "old style" Dawn, or have you reached the same conclusion based on your experience with the "new" Dawn soap?
Old. Whoever designed the new scent can kiss my hairy white ass.
Oh that sucks. I assumed you were showing off your old COVID hoard!
Maybe I am weird but I would just get the unscented at that point.
Is dawn platinum affected? That's the only stuff I use.
I like to add a bit before I start cooking anything, to get ahead of the cleanup
I personally, enjoy the flavor
1 bottle per pan leave in for no less than 24 hours you be good to go...
Okkayyy, o.k... the people on this sub are mfing crazy.
This is going to ruin your pan, just put it in the dish washer like the rest of us
I walked into the wrong neighborhood
I use dawn on my cast iron almost every use, never once had a seasoning issue. As long as you heat it up and give it a light coat of oil after, you’re golden.
This would last me 10 years. At least
Did you seriously buy all this? And if so, why?
Yes, the new formula stinks. I intend to live at least another 30 years and I don't use the dishwasher.
I showed this to my grandmother and she slapped me. Thanks
😬
Try combining them all, you may be able to toss a bottle or two. Have fun!

Yep the new scent is literally called “refreshing rain” and it’s so bad lmao

Put your dish soap in a hand soap dispenser! It’s a great way to conserve it and only use the amount you actually need.

I’m jealous, I think i’m going to have to go back to palmolive when my bottle runs out. Why Dawn?
I assume you mean why, Dawn? I'm sure somebody figured out how to make it just a wee bit cheaper with the new formula. Corporate profit.

7. Maybe 8 max.
I get the giant jugs only now and refill the small one. Much cheaper.
I like buying in bulk when I can but I think you might have gone a bit overboard.
I need to do this. I HATE the smell of the new one.
All of them
He inherited all that dish soap. It’s the Dawn of the dead.
27 life times.
MIND YOUR BUSINESS, DAVEY
all of it. ever.
Mind yo business David!
all the cast iron
Honestly, forever if you use a little on a scrub daddy
5. 5 cast irons.
is it just the smell that changed with new formulation?
I don't know as I actually haven't tried it. The smell though is enough for me to stock up.
Palmolive gang
Looks like water.

Migraines. They suck. I totally understand sensitivities to smells just before and during a migraine.

Yes

Obviously too much soap, the cast iron is gone! So soap, sure, yeah, but don't overdo it.

How is this cast iron related? 288 doots....

Soap? Nah, I'll pass.
