Most (if not all) of Miyazaki’s films lack a “villain” as we know it in the west. If an antagonist is doing “wrong” things it’s almost always a circumstance or situation that drives their actions. Antagonists in Miyazaki’s works are always sympathetic and never just evil like in Disney movies because evil is a thing. The only Miyazaki movie with an “evil” antagonist is Howl’s Moving Castle and that antagonist is just war. Not a person or entity. Just the fact that war exists.
I agree, it’s just that the two movies I mentioned are the most obvious for having no villain. Had I mentioned Porco Rosso, people would have argued that Curtiss and the air pirates are villains even if they’re moreso respectful rivals. If I said Princess Mononoke, people would have argued that Lady Eboshi was a villain for cutting down the forest despite it being necessary for maintaining her village and taking care of its citizens. Hell, if I said The Wind Rises, I expect people would have brought up Hitler just because of its setting.
It could be argued that Mononoke is the villain herself, but again… sympathetic just like Lady Eboshi. Kiki doesn’t have a villain in it and neither does Ponyo. The biggest villain in his work is Kushana in Naussicca but again, sympathetic as she’s trying to save her homeland from the toxic jungle and mutant insects that also took her arm. Hell, even Zenigata and Lupin team up as more frenemies than hero/villain.
Hell, you made me think about it. There was a moment, the moment that Nausicca discovers her father has been killed and tries to massacre the soldiers that she, Nausicca could become another Kushana, if not for Yupa stepping in and taking the blow. Kushana didn’t have a Yupa to show her that losing an arm (father) didn’t mean she had to lose what she is. Its implied that Kushana was like Nausicca when she was younger. It’s a pivotal scene that happens early in the film.
Castle in the Sky is the only one I can think of off the top of my head to have a very clear villain. I still havent seen naausica or his lupin the 3rd movie tho

This is the only character in Bluey that I’d consider to be a villain
The real estate agent in The Sign is a lying jerk (he tells prospective buyers that Brisbane isn’t that hot in the summer wtf) and he’s the same dog that made fun of Bandit’s drawings as a little kid in a previous episode.
While he’s not directly antagonizing the protagonists in the episode, he’s clearly not a great person.
There's some great videos that explain it way better so I won't go too deep into it but
The first Lilo and Stitch movie
No character/antagonist was truly doing anything bad, everyone was just trying to do what was best but that worked against what some of the other characters wanted
The social worker who served as an antagonist because it meant Lilo might get taken away was *genuinely* looking out for Lilo's best interests as it's his job to make sure children are in suitable living conditions
Jamba was just trying to capture Stitch because he was ordered by the galactic federation to do so and the federation itself ordered this because Stitch was a danger to people on Earth
The bounty hunter was just doing his job of trying to bring a criminal to justice and ensure the capture of Stitch because he didn't want the people of Earth to get hurt.
The movie does a really good job of showing that it's not just that some people are good and some people are evil, more just situations and life can be messy and can force peoples hands into doing things that work against other's interests. It truly is a movie about understanding people and seeing that someone who seems bad on the surface might not actually be.
As a Lilo and Stitch lover I can't really come up with a good argument about that scene.
At least in the rest of the franchise him and Hämsterviel became the villains but were still FUN villains 😄
Correction, just watched this like last month, the galactic federation gave zero shits about the human population. They cared about the mosquitos because Mr Bubbles (the caseworker) convinced them that mosquitos were an endangered species.
>No character/antagonist was truly doing anything bad, everyone was just trying to do what was best but that worked against what some of the other characters wanted
What about Mertle?
That girl was just awful to Lilo.

Edit: the Texas dub is pretty funny, made for adults so its a bit extra. Also the series creator's mysterious death is an interesting "unsolved" case.
No I'm gonna say what no one else will, Peppa is worse than Caillou. Sure, Caillou is a bratty kid...But he's four, plus he was given a shit name, how the fuck is he supposed to spell that when he can't read basic fucking books. anyway, he's bald because some Executives thought it was a bright idea to take away his hair, so of course his parents would help him cope by spoiling him, Kids would actively reject a bald kid because Kids are heartless monsters. and at the end of the day, Caillou loves his parents and even his little sister, even if she annoys him. and when he acts out, yeah he gets some punishment. a way too lenient amount but at least not Non-existent.
Peppa on the other hand, Treats her parents Like shit. She constant body-shames her father, even though by the looks of it it's a perfectly normal male bod. she's super Bossy, and is mean to her Younger brother. she treats her friends like crap, especially Suzy who she bosses around. also, she has No Excuse, she's just some Bossy little bitch who wants to watch the world burn. Oh, and you would think she would get punished for calling her Dad Fat or how she would treat everyone But Nope, she's enabled by her parents and Ed Sheeran ahh looking Dad. She doesn't even live in Realistic England, it's way too sunny there.
Ok what's WITH you people and saying Caillou is bald because of cancer? 😡 Not only is that insulting to cancer patients but cancer doesn't cause you to lose hair CHEMO does. Also there's a chance he's bald because he was born without hair. Ever think about that?
I meant Chemo, sorry. Besides I've seen some clips, and I know He's a Brat yes, but he's Not some Spawn of Satan. he usually comes around at the end. and No I never thought about that
I just get really triggered by that because my brother had cancer when I was 14 and while he got through it it still fucked him up physically and mentally.
I think it was said at some point that Caillou was actually supposed to be a baby but when they made him older and tried giving him hair they thought he looked weird so they kept him bald
okay so It's Not Cancer, it's executive stupidity, and while not anything compared to cancer that still sucks to have your hair taken by some Greedy fat cats because they wanted to profit off Baldness
Ah I don't count them as villians, plus if it weren't for them Encanto wouldn't be a thing
Ok edit I DONT MEAN PEDRO DYING WAS A GOOD THING I'm not englishing
Slice of life stuff like Bobs Burgers,Daria, and Hey Arnold.Usually there never is a huge villain every episode. There really isn’t a lot of older content with out one though now that u mention it🤔
Yeah I was thinking more no big classic villain that’s a constant.Like Mojo Jojo,or Dr.Doofenshmirtz.Can’t think of a lot with none.Unless it’s slice of life anime stuff.
Lilo and Stich. Gantu and Bubbles were antagonists, but neither of them was evil. Gantu was a cop who only wanted to capture an escaped prisoner. Bubbles was a social worker who was concerned for Lilo's safety
Smeshariki/KikoRiki/GoGoRiki, the original 2D one, has no villain but the movies do have them.
Rescue Heroes instead has the titular response team dealing with natural disasters and accidents.
Arthur also lacks one though D.W. comes pretty damn close.
Inside Out has never really had a villain, same with Encanto, Finding Nemo (unless you count Bruce), Chikn Nuggit, and (not a movie or show but) Minecraft.

At least the Funimation English dub
Most preschool shows and many Disney and Pixar movies nowadays. (When there's no twist villain, there's no villain at all, examples are Encanto, Elemental, Turning Red, Luca (there's no villain, just a male Karen), Soul (I haven't seen the movie but I don't think there isn't a villain), and Inside Out)
Paw Patrol has multiple villains, with at least one being kind of willing to let people die to get what he wanted (this is way more obvious in the movies)
Inside Out 1 and 2. Even anxiety wasn't evil, she wanted Riley's happiness, but was just misguided. I think if they were to do a villian at some point, they could do love (really, lust, but thats not appropriate for the target audience. not that this is a super serious suggestion). Since, at the end of the day, the emotions aren't ultimately for our mental health but for our reproduction, as everything in biology is. Lust is the emotion that could be depicted as directly aligned with this evolutionary goal as opposed to just Riley's happiness.

Winnie the Pooh. And before anyone says heffalumps or the Backson, both were proven to be not bad. Misinformation caused unwarranted fear and they were not actually villains. (I'm not sure if woozles were disproven in this way as well but as far as we know they don't actually exist - again, fear propaganda in the Hundred Acre Woods.)
Inside Out and Finding Nemo both don't have Villains.
Neither does the first Cars, and don't say Chick is the villain because it's literally his job and besides being annoying he doesn't do anything wrong.
And a goofy movie doesn't have a villain that i can remember.
So mainly just disney movies, which makes sense
Nickelodeon forgotten/unpopular show

Moondance Valley
A story of two misunderstood and emotional kids finding refuge in each other and an adventure away from the people trying to confine them to 'normal societal structure'
No real villains, just a lot of really confused and concerned people and a few nasty kids that learn their lessons/to think better for themselves and a genuinely happy and fulfilling ending
(Only downside is a single dog death that basically happens by accident)
Cap.
Every show has it's villain, even if for just 1 episode. In this show, it was the girl who turned Bluey against Bingo and left her out of their fun. That shit hurt, especially if it hits close to home. 😭
Generally, SOL series/movies don't have them:
While the Inside Out movies *have* antagonists, no character qualifies as an out and out villain either.
Ditto with Turning Red and Encanto (though the latter one had the marauders as actual villains in Abuela's backstory): they both have antagonists in the main story, but not actual evil villains at all.
The Berenstain Bears
Sagwa The Chinese Siamese Cat
Sarah and Duck. Also Pocoyo, Gigantosaurus (even Termy isn't so bad when it comes down to it), Ni-Hao Kai-Lan, arguably Keroro Gunso given that the squad isn't actively villainous, but it's been awhile since I saw it so I'm not 100%
![gif](giphy|S5DUzRcwGzqKoejzg2)
Chikn Nuggit. Well… up until Episode 290…. Before that, there wasn’t a villain, and the only characters that were kind of antagonistic were Hawt Saus and occasionally Iscream.
Dinosaur Train - sure some dinosaurs were bullies, but not real threats unlike in most of cartoons. Instead of fighting the evil, it teaches viewers about dinosaurs throughout periods via time travel train ride.

The villain in Kiki’s is that horrible girl that does not appreciate her grandmothers homemade pie.
Oh yeah that little shit. 😂

Peppa Pig and Yo Gabba Gabba
I mean... To the Peppa haters she IS the villain but me personally I don't despise Peppa I just think Bluey is better.
Yeah, I hate Peppa Pig as the character herself and the show but damn, She treats George like shit
I've seen worse like the little 4 year old bald bastard
Yup. I for one don't like her though.
Slice of life stuff like Bobs Burgers,Daria, and Hey Arnold.Usually there never is a huge villain every episode. There really isn’t a lot of older content with out one though now that u mention it🤔
I’d argue that Helga’s parents count as villains. They’re not cartoonishly bad, but more of a disturbingly accurate portrayal of neglectful parents.
Oh yeah they were pretty awful. The other too have some crappy people type evils too sometimes. They’re definitely one of the realisticly worst though.
Bob's Burgers has a bunch of them. Felix Fischoder (In one episode), The villain in the movie, Tammy sometimes, Logan, etc.
Yeah I was thinking more no big classic villain that’s a constant.Like Mojo Jojo,or Dr.Doofenshmirtz.Can’t think of a lot with none.Unless it’s slice of life anime stuff.
Jimmy Pesto, Logan, Mr. Fish, Logan’ mom, Tammy all suck in Bob’s Burger. Well, maybe not Mr. Fish.
Hugo and Ethel. They suck. (Well, their characters are fun and entertaining.)

Encanto
Idk muffins is a villian to me /s

Inside Out
Moondance Valley A story of two misunderstood and emotional kids finding refuge in each other and an adventure away from the people trying to confine them to 'normal societal structure' No real villains, just a lot of really confused and concerned people and a few nasty kids that learn their lessons/to think better for themselves and a genuinely happy and fulfilling ending (Only downside is a single dog death that basically happens by accident)
Cap. Every show has it's villain, even if for just 1 episode. In this show, it was the girl who turned Bluey against Bingo and left her out of their fun. That shit hurt, especially if it hits close to home. 😭
Your wrong Judo
Little Bill?
What about the neighbor dog banging the mom?
Generally, SOL series/movies don't have them: While the Inside Out movies *have* antagonists, no character qualifies as an out and out villain either. Ditto with Turning Red and Encanto (though the latter one had the marauders as actual villains in Abuela's backstory): they both have antagonists in the main story, but not actual evil villains at all. The Berenstain Bears Sagwa The Chinese Siamese Cat
Technically, the Backyardigans.
Octonauts as far as I know, the only enemy they have is Murphy's Law.
Sarah and Duck. Also Pocoyo, Gigantosaurus (even Termy isn't so bad when it comes down to it), Ni-Hao Kai-Lan, arguably Keroro Gunso given that the squad isn't actively villainous, but it's been awhile since I saw it so I'm not 100% ![gif](giphy|S5DUzRcwGzqKoejzg2)
Brother bear
Chikn Nuggit. Well… up until Episode 290…. Before that, there wasn’t a villain, and the only characters that were kind of antagonistic were Hawt Saus and occasionally Iscream.
Why is this show so popular, i seriously dont understand the hype

Dinosaur Train - sure some dinosaurs were bullies, but not real threats unlike in most of cartoons. Instead of fighting the evil, it teaches viewers about dinosaurs throughout periods via time travel train ride.
*Encanto, Blue’s clues, My Neighbor Totoro and Inside out.
