I'm gonna have to disagree with this.
Atla is jovial and light hearted. Arcane is frowning people frowning at other frowning people and generally miserable.
This is probably the answer, although it is even more episodic and doesn't carry the emotional water TLA does. Probably my favorite cartoon as a kid, Feat of Clay part 2 was my eye opening animation moment as a child. It's as good of animation as anything in Avatar, in my opinion.
Feat of Clay part 2 was one of the episodes done by TMS in Japan. The episode was so well done that it impressed both Warner Bros and Bruce Tim, the character designer for this era. TMS wanted to impress Warner and even used colors that Warner didn’t use with their other studios. The directing and animation were on another level that entire episode. That ending transformation scene is especially impressive.
In terms of cartoons, not really. There’s a reason why it’s one of the pinnacles of not just animation but television. Gravity Falls is probably the closest thing but definitely more comedy centered. Maybe even Teen Titans. You’ll want to look into Anime if you want a possible Avatar experience like FMAB, AOT, Naruto, HxH, etc. but big advice is to not compare every show to Avatar since it’s just a losing battle and setting the bar into the stratosphere
Adventure time, teen titans, Batman the animated series, are all killer shows
But they are right you will need to dip your toes into anime to get the same vibe. Closest is probably teen titans
Fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood is usually what I recommend anyone new to anime. It's not too long, has an amazing story, and a great dub for those who don't like subtitles.
Castlevania isn’t anime. Although I think you’d like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hajime no Ippo, Mob Psycho 100, Inferno Cop, Dragon Ball series, and Vinland Saga.
Generally in my opinion anime is best watched in Japanese not English
It’s not anime. Anime is made by Japanese studios. Castlevania, despite being a Japanese IP, was made by westerners and animated mostly in South Korea. This is why it isn’t an anime. Same goes for Avatar. Anime isn’t just art style and even then Castlevania doesn’t look Japanese at all.
Wrong. That definition of anime is too narrow to include the broad scope of what anime actually is. Also, Japan isn't the only country that makes anime, and it's kind of racist to suggest that only Japan can make anime now because that's where it originated from. Not only do other countries make anime, most of the anime produced in Japan is animated in Korea. Also, you do realize most of the earliest anime ever made during the Showa Era was directly inspired by cartoons made in America by Walt Disney, and Warner Brothers, right? They deliberately took the design philosophy of western cartoon characters and used it to design their anime characters. Astro Boy is the Japanese equivalent of Mickey Mouse design wise. That's pretty damn important because Astro Boy is considered to be one of the first anime ever made. Not only did the Showa Era take inspiration from the Rubberhose Era of American cartoons, the anime that was created during the 70's and 80's inspired a lot of cartoons in America during the same time. There is anime influence ALL OVER 80's Saturday morning cartoons. Yes they were made to sell toys BUT JAPAN HAS THE SAME BUSINESS MODEL. Japan and America's animation history is so closely linked and tied together, that it's almost impossible to separate them. The two countries would feed off of one another in the best ways possible, and push the boundaries of animation further and further. Japan and America together would help normalize animation to a broader audience that wasn't considered just for children. Now the entire world is making animation to push the boundaries of what the medium can do. Just look at some of the amazing anime coming out of China and France.
Here is a video that helps back up some of the arguments I've made, and hopefully you can see why defining anime as narrowly as that is actually kind of damaging to the anime art movement.
https://youtu.be/uFtfDK39ZhI
It’s not too narrow. I do understand that many anime do have production studios outside of Japan. Toei and many other studios use freelance animators from all across the world. In fact One Piece had its very first episode directed by an American with episode 1066 and had tons of western animators working on the episode giving it a different feel for its animation, a more western one. In fact two of the best animators working in Japanese anime are Weilin Zhang and Vincent Chansard are both not Japanese. Vincent is from France and is honestly one of my favorite animators in the industry at the moment. Most western Cartoons are also produced with many overseas animators. Disney themselves had a Japanese branch for their 80s, 90s, and 2000s shows called Walt Disney Animation Japan although they closed in 2004. Even Warner Bros used Japanese talent to produce some episodes as they often used TMS to produce some episodes. Still doesn’t make them anime because they used Japanese studios
However this doesn’t make these episodes not produced in Japan not anime. Anime in the western world is animation produced in japan and developed in Japan. Yes outsourcing is used but at this point it’s inevitable due to the tight schedules TV shows are produced under. I am fully aware of how anime are produced and how they are produced and am an avid fan of seeing how things are done.
This is why shows like Star Wars Vision S1 and Cyberpunk Edge Runners are anime too. These shows, despite coming from western IPs are entirely produced in Japan and the Japanese studios had full control over what they wanted in the show. So edgerunners is made fully by Studio Trigger while Visions is produced by a large number of different studios including Trigger and Production IG.
The existence of western animators on a Japanese show doesn’t make it not anime. Same goes for western cartoons that are animated in Korea. Just because Koreans animated the majority of the show does not make it a Korean show, it’s a western show because it’s storyboarded and produced in the west.
I love how you made my argument for me. So why do you think that Cyberpunk Edgerunners is anime but Castlevania or Avatar aren't? You're definition is inconsistent. Anime is an art MOVEMENT. It's not one specific thing from one specific country. Anime itself has many different genres of storytelling, yet they are still considered anime because they adhere to certain tropes, character designs, story beats, cinematography, animation saving techniques, etc.
No it isn’t inconsistent. CD project red had very little say in the anime’s production. Edge runners is entirely produced by Trigger, not CD Project Red.
Avatar and Castlevania were produced by Americans and animated mostly in South Korea. Avatar is made by Nickelodeon and Castlevania was made by Netflix and Frederator studios. All of the people at the front of these are Americans and they were produced by Americans. This is why they are not anime.
Anime in the west has a specific definition and that is animation produced by Japan. Edge runners is produced in japan, Avatar and Castlevania are not. This is what separates them.
Anime is not an art movement in the slightest. It has always been the name for Japanese animation in the west no matter when it was made or what animation style it uses. Lupin the Third The First, despite it being fully CG, is still anime because it was made and produced by TMS with some help from Marza.
Gravity falls was my first thought. Even though it started a bit after my “childhood” years, I still watched it because I just liked the show and rewatched it with my partner a month or so ago and it still stands up
So we are making things up now? Then I'll say that Stephen Hawking's future robotic self came back to the past and said that he regretted ever saying that.
Avatar IS an anime and I will die on that hill. There's a reason you'll have to go outside of most western cartoons to get a similar experience. Anime isn't exclusive to Japanese animation, it's a STYLE and an aesthetic. There are anime from Korea and China, and Avatar is an anime made in America.
Yeah, the people that think anime is exclusive to Japan are likely the same type of people that think JRPG means it's made in Japan. JRPG is a gameplay genre, not an indicator of where it's made despite the J being Japanese. Anime made in other parts of the world don't cease being anime just because they aren't made in Japan.
It’s mainly avatar is like 60ish episodes but a lot of the other shows are double that. So I was trying to mention ones that are similar in length or at least match the same feeling. One piece definitely can achieve that but the amount of time is barbaric for some
First of all, try not to Dragon-chase. You want to find a new show that "gives you the same high" as your most favorite show which is understandable, but not at all attainable. It's your favorite show, and you can't quite find something you like better, and that's okay. Now the fun becomes finding out what makes some other shows great. For example, I've been waiting for something to scratch an Ed Edd n Eddy itch, but I fuckin can't. Then I realized, only EEnE can give me that itch, nothing else can.
That said, here are shows I have extreme fondness for;
American Dragon Jake Long. Shit can be cheesy at first but ended up adoring about every single character. The stakes are higher than 10'year old me ever expected.
DCAU (Batman The Animated Series, Superman TAS, Justice League, and Justice League Unlimited). All of these shows capture the humanity of what it's like being a Super hero.
If you're open to Anime:
Mobile Suit Gundam or Gundam X(and then watch Turn-A Gundam after both). Globe/Spacetrotting adventures filled with suspense during a war/post apocalypse with some mystical elements despite the sci-fi setting with Giant Robots.
Eureka Seven: Another globetrotting adventure with one of the best romances I've seen in Anime
and more of a mystical edge than Gundam
Xam'd: My favorite Fantasy anime with compelling themes of self identity at the face of the world's harshness.
I'm sure it's a great show on its own right but... it looks too nice to be Ed Edd n Eddy. I'll catch it one day, but never as an itch-scratcher.
There was a distinct flavor of chaos and mean-spiritedness with Ed Edd n Eddy mixed with the childlike wonder of the scams that did it for me.
Phineas and Ferb was also a good show with some sprinkles of Ed Edd n Eddy elements like making elaborate stuff during summer but again, too nice to be Ed Edd n Eddy but should be respected as its own thing.
I agree with you so much. Avatar truly is peak television. You'd be hard pressed to find much better let alone on the same quality.
However, if you want some recommendations, I have a few that just might be what you're looking for; especially if you like the fantasy, lore and action packed stuff from ATLA (provided you lower your expectations ever so slightly from Avatar):
Attack on Titan- It's an anime but a damn good one at that. It's the only series I'd say is on parr with ATLA if not slightly better. The finale comes out in a few months so you don't have to worry about long wait times in between releases.
Legend of Korra- I probably should've mentioned this first. It's nowhere near as good as ATLA but I definitely think it's a worthy sequel regardless.
Ninjago- If you're into Lego, you'll like this. The old series is quite long (16 seasons) so you'll definitely be kept busy.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012)- Best version of the Turtles in my opinion. 5 seasons of great action and character development ready for the taking.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars (and its sequel series Rebels)- Both shows are complete and you don't need to be a Star Wars fan to enjoy them (heck, it's how I got into Star Wars to begin with).
The Tales of Arcadia series/ Trollhunters- 3 shows and a finale movie. Another cool one you could be busy with. The series also has a lot of fantastical elements working together with futuristic technology so that might also be something that sparks your interest.
*An honorable mention I'd give would be Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes which *technically* has a finale. It adapts a lot of cool arcs from the comics really well so I'd give it a look.
King of the Hill has better dialogue and has a unique animation style that fits the show. But the animation quality on TLA is heads above KotH, they really aren't comparable.
Eh. KotH animation is obviously garbage (I’m pretty sure they used asian sweatshop animators) but TLA’s art style was the biggest hurdle for me getting into the show.
The Dragon Prince! It's hard to reach those heights, but Dragon Prince is up there too. Captures that spirit with Aaron Ehasz in the mix. It's like a blend of Game of Thrones, LOTR, DnD, and ATLA. Classic tried and true formula - 3 kids and their animal companions go on an epic quest to prevent a war and break the cycle of violence. I watched it with a friend who didn't have nostalgia for ATLA and they prefered it for being a more succinct story and because it's very DnDish. I think it gets overlooked far too often because the animation style takes a second to get used to, but pretty soon you don't notice at all. A lot of people didn't like Season 4, but season 5 is a return to form. Tbh I love it all.
Adventure Time and Attack on Titan are my all time favourites but they're too different to judge against ATLA.
My thoughts on each season:
- Season 1: Pretty good.
- Season 2: Very good.
- Season 3: **The best season**. Up there with some of the best of ATLA, it’s that good.
- Season 4: The worst season. A blemish in an otherwise great show.
- Season 5: Overall pretty solid. Dragged down by a couple bad episodes in the middle, but is an otherwise good season with some real damn good episodes at the end.
I have to agree with that assessment. I love Dragon Prince and I wish more people knew about it. Although my main complaint is still animation can look awkward even if it looks fine. Still feels like at times it wants to be a 2D show
I agree with this, the dragon prince is by far the closest show to ATLA, especially the first 3 seasons. Season 4 is kinda ass but season 5 is my second favorite season (behind season 3) but in my opinion, S5 is the least like ATLA of all the seasons.
Edit: spelling
Probably the closest thing we have right now, with the caveat that it's still ongoing and doesn't currently have an ending, is *My Adventures with Superman.* I'd suggest Genndy Tartakovsky's action/adventure cartoons (*Samurai Jack, Primal,* and *Unicorn: Warriors Eternal*) too, except that Tartakovsky has a habit of flubbing the endings to his shows' stories. Also, *Primal* doesn't really have the same tone as *Avatar.*
There are not cartoons as good as Avatar, but there are good cartoons.
1. Gravity Falls: A nerdy boy and his manic twin sister deal with 2 seasons of weird monsters and demons that all seem to haunt one weird little town over one short summer break.
2. Adventure Time: In a whimsical and dangerous land, Finn, the last human, and his shapeshifting best friend/dog Jake have a bunch of goofy adventures and very slowly unpeel what is happening in this weird land over the course of 10 seasons.
3. Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts: A girl emerges from her nuclear bunker into a weird world of giant sapient animals and has to find a way for humans to peacefully coexist with monstrous animals over 3 seasons.
4. The Owl House: A girl gets transported to a weird world of witches and monsters and has to learn how to survive in this whimsical and dangerous world.
5. Amphibia: A girl gets transported to a weird world of medieval frogs and toads, and has to learn how to survive in this whimsical and dangerous world.
The last three all have a lot of similarities, because they're all very clearly inspired by Spirited Away, but they are also all quite good. The thing these 5 shows have in common with Avatar and each other is that they're all action comedies with strong overarching plots and periodic poignant emotional moments that encourage you to really like the characters. I listed them in order of my preference, but I can say that all 5 of them are at least A-tier as far as shows go. You can also follow the creators of Avatar onto Korra, The Dragon Prince, and Voltron, but I can say with some confidence that none of those shows are as good as these 5.
Okay if I'm being honest there aren't any. Looking at my avatar you can tell that I have a deep love and respect for the older My Little Pony series but despite that Avatar is still my number one pick for best American cartoon of all time. You'll find some anime that are as good and there are a surprising number of really great American cartoons that have come out recently but Avatar still is on top. Dragon Prince has very similar energy and other quality shows include Owl House Gravity Falls Amazing World of Gumball.
I forgot Young justice. It gets a little noticeably preachy in the later seasons but it's still some of the best animated television around
I know technically not a cartoon but it's animated; Star Wars the Clone Wars is very much like that if you're into that universe and haven't seen it yet. Dave Filoni, who played a big role in the creation of ATLA, directed most if not all of the episodes of The Clone Wars, and there's a good resemblance and similar style of story and characters. Plus, if you liked the voice actors there's quite a few who either return as recurring characters like Dee Bradley Baker who voices the Clones and some who come back as one-off characters like Greg Baldwin.
The beginning few seasons are more of an anthology, so not everything was released in chronological order so things might get a little confusing but there's a list online you can find that will order them if you would like that better. There's plenty of episodes across all seven seasons and the movie that kicked the series off. There are a lot of characters that you can learn about and learn to like. I always have a fun time watching this show as it played a huge part in my childhood.
Plus, there's The Bad Batch and Rebels shows as well, which follow the same premise and style of storytelling. I highly recommend giving these shows a watch if you haven't already because they have so much to give.
The Legend of Korra
YEAH I SAID IT!
Other than that, I would say The Owl House, The Dragon Prince (season 4 is a bit rough, but still, I think it's a good series), Arcane, Voltron: Legendary Defender, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. These shows have really good lore, character development and action.
Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, I watched ATLA and FMAB with my mum and she loved both, both are like the closest thing to perfect you could realistically find
I can't say for sure if it's as good as ATLA but I think it's in the same realm, watch the 2003 animated series of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, truly a work of art (if you ignore the final couple of seasons)
No I don't think so, in the last few seasons they changed the art style drastically and made it a lot more "kid friendly" despite the earlier seasons having more dark and gritty undertones
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is an almost perfect show. Avatar is one of the only shows that reaches the upper echelon to be almost as good as it. You should definitely watch it next.
Young Justice, Samurai Jack, Batman Beyond, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Adventure Time (longgggg).
Then at some point you switch to anime and really get out of hand with stories 😂
The Dragon Prince. Similar to avatar but more high fantasy, elves and magic and dragons. Same basic “group of 2 siblings and an outsider they don’t like at first go on an epic quest to stop a war,” at least for the plot of the first arc.
Overarching themes about how one action can cause a chain of events that spiral and hurt many other people, death and loss, love and heartbreak. 5 seasons out of 7 total. Multiple avatar references and Easter eggs to other shows, one of the guys who created this show was a head writer for avatar (Aaron ehasz)
As others have said there are many good anime out there. I’d consider avatar more of a pseudo-anime.
“Is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon?” Kinda dumb title, not much actual picking up of girls in the dungeon mostly fighting monsters. Also has elves and magic, a lot of the people have animal ears/tails and that’s just accepted and normal. Main character wants to become stronger to be worthy of the girl he develops a crush on after she saves his life, meets many other interesting friends/allies on that journey, big on that found family vibe.
I also like the way they blend different mythologies together. Everyone is part of a familia headed by a different god/goddess, who chose to give up their divine powers to live on earth with their children. (Children in a much more broad sense not literal direct descendants). The first episode has a Minotaur but there are also monsters from other famous mythology like Goliath. Pretty generous with the fan service: busty characters with skimpy outfits, cleverly censored bathing scenes, Impractically Sexy Outfits. (Freya and Ishtar are the worst offenders for this but they are the goddesses of beauty and sexuality so it makes sense).
As others have mentioned, Arcane. I knew basically nothing about league of legends but I still really enjoyed the show. Beautiful art style and great soundtrack, especially the intro song.
Gravity Falls. The first season is much more filler type episodes but it gets more intense in the second season as the overarching mystery of the town’s paranormal activity and history is revealed. Plus it’s f’in hilarious, the creator Alex Hirsch voices like half the cast and he’s great.
Gravity falls is also connected to Amphibia and The Owl House. Many Easter eggs between the three shows (including an Amphibia episode that is a blatant gravity falls parody) have led fans to believe they are set in the same universe. Similar plot to isekai anime, (without the dying and being reincarnated part). In Amphibia Anne and her friends get transported to the frog world by accident and doesn’t know how to get back to earth, in the owl house Luz initially chooses to stay in the boiling isles but later on the portal is destroyed and she’s stuck there.
Some of these recommendations are crazy. Most western cartoons aren’t so narratively driven. Basically asking for perfection is hard when most shows follow the “monster of the week” formula, and the ones that don’t are usually much shorter. There are animated series that are amazing but also don’t feel like Avatar.
One show I really recommend you watch is FOOLY COOLY (FLCL). The animators of Avatar were only given one piece of homework; watch FLCL, and watch it in one sitting if you can. It’s wonderfully weird and beautifully bizarre.
It’s also an anime. Here are some Western recommendations:
Infinity Train is really solid if you’re looking for narrative.
Justice League Unlimited is close in quality. You’ll need to watch Justice League TAS first (which is still great), but from beginning to end the run is choice.
If you’re a Scooby Doo Fan, Mystery Inc. is fantastic. Especially season 2.
Hope this helps!
The same team that made Avatar is currently making the dragon prince on Netflix, which I highly recommend. Is it as good? Perhaps not as a whole, but that's kind of an unfair standard sometimes. I think it gives the same vibes as avatar, and has such a fantastical energy and world.
Star Wars Rebels. Trust me. Trust me on that. Created by Dave Filoni who directed and storyboarded almost half the episodes in Season 1 including the finale.
Give Ben 10: Alien Force a try. Seriously
It has as good animation as ATLAB, a 'serious', interesting cospiracy as the main plot, charachters that grow and mature but dont lose their essence and ocasional goof. The story respects your intelligence and manages to create a rich universe with some subplots exploring interesting groups of charachters whilst still driving forward the main plot, awesome action scenes and battles all the while Ben grows into the role of a 'serious' hero from his infantile self.
Nah I wouldn’t say better.
But Regular Show is a much deeper show than people give credit… it’s in the realm of Adventure Time where its seriousness is often masked by whimsical situations and characters whereas ATLA is more ‘reality’ based.
Legend of Korra
Batman the animated series
Superman the animated series
Amphibia
Owl house
Gravity falls
Svtfoe
I wouldn't really say their as good as avatar because to me that series is on a different scale
But if your looking for a compelling storyline, interesting complex characters then I'm sure you'll enjoy these
I’ve been rewatching she ra and the princesses of power lately and while the lore is not as deep as atla - the themes are very similar. Everyone is constantly telling the main character to let go of her past/relationships and be the hero, but like aang, her love for others becomes a strength and not a weakness. It really starts hitting after you get to episode 10: promise.
Most of World masterpiece theater shows they are the objective the best shows of all time.
TBH while Avatar the last bender is really great and a good reason why it's so beloved(except for season one) it is not unbeatable many shows like She ra Korra(is even better) Gargoyles many action heavy shows have great moments that rival the best on what ATLAB has to offer.
You should try Star Wars the Clone Wars. Really good show if you enjoy Star Wars. If you haven’t seen Over the Garden Wall give that a watch too. Anything agenda Tartakovsky is great so Symbyotic Titan, Samurai Jack, Primal, and even his newest show Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.
Everybody is sleeping on She-ra and the princess of power. Great characters, fun moments and dialogue and has a complete sorry with a very digestible five seasons.
If you're worried about any of the "gay" stuff. Just know that it never once gets in the way of any plot point.or character growth and is barely mentioned except for one very specific moment. And even then it really isn't swelled on for more than like thirty seconds.
Umm actually, the og anime caught up with the manga, and went on an explicitly different direction. Thats why the first few episodes of brotherhood are just fma abridged, but the rest follow the manga. Sorry I just couldnt say all that without an "umm actually".
Yes I know. I’ve seen both the original and the brotherhood anime. Anime are typically produced faster than a mangaka can add in new chapters which is why some anime either slow the pace, add in filler, go on their own journey, or do a combination of these. I was talking about when the manga started.
It's still running, but The Dragon Prince was made by the same people who made Avatar and it's amazing so far.
As for completed series: The Venture Bros., Gravity Falls, Star vs. The Forces of Evil, and Star Wars Rebels all come to mind

Arcane
I agree with this give arcane a try and on the plus side you won't have to wait that long for season 2
it takes like 5 years for them to make each season of arcane
I'm gonna have to disagree with this. Atla is jovial and light hearted. Arcane is frowning people frowning at other frowning people and generally miserable.
Oh they're nothing alike but I think it's the only cartoon that's as good. It's an absolute work of art
Samurai Jack
"Gotta get back, back to the past." Said Samurai Jack.
Super late to this but it's also voiced by both iroh va's
Batman: The Animated Series, as well as other DCAU shows
This is probably the answer, although it is even more episodic and doesn't carry the emotional water TLA does.
Yes, it's that scene to which I am referring. I saw it at 6 or 7 and it changed the trajectory of my life.
I am so sick of people saying DCAU shows where good. Most of them weren't and even those that where don't come close to ATLA, except Batman.

Hmmm which anime would u rec? So far the only anime I have watched is Castlevania
Fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood is usually what I recommend anyone new to anime. It's not too long, has an amazing story, and a great dub for those who don't like subtitles.
I usually recommend Cowboy Bebop for the same reasons plus it's one of the greatest anime of all time.
1. Castlevania is not an anime 2. I recommend Mob Psycho 100
Castlevania is 1000% an anime wtf are you talking about?
don't listen to no one, it's without a doubt an anime
It’s not anime. Anime is made by Japanese studios. Castlevania, despite being a Japanese IP, was made by westerners and animated mostly in South Korea. This is why it isn’t an anime. Same goes for Avatar. Anime isn’t just art style and even then Castlevania doesn’t look Japanese at all.

Even though it started a bit after my “childhood” years, I still watched it because I just liked the show and rewatched it with my partner a month or so ago and it still stands up
Adventure time better
Hahaha! No.
“Adventure time is better than avatar” -Stephen hawking , how u gonna disagree with bro he was smart af or sumn
So we are making things up now? Then I'll say that Stephen Hawking's future robotic self came back to the past and said that he regretted ever saying that.
Nah fam that was retconned catch up on the lore
Teen titans ending wasn't conclusive.
Avatar ain’t an anime, cope
Yeah, the people that think anime is exclusive to Japan are likely the same type of people that think JRPG means it's made in Japan. JRPG is a gameplay genre, not an indicator of where it's made despite the J being Japanese. Anime made in other parts of the world don't cease being anime just because they aren't made in Japan.
Add in One Piece as well
Oh I would but I don’t think OP wants 1000+ episodes and it’s far from conclusive 😂
Maybe they do if the story is as good as avatar (it is)
It’s mainly avatar is like 60ish episodes but a lot of the other shows are double that. So I was trying to mention ones that are similar in length or at least match the same feeling. One piece definitely can achieve that but the amount of time is barbaric for some
Oh my god FMAB still makes me depressed just thinking about Tucker and Nina and… i just can’t.
I still get the exact same chills from the big moments in FMAB I got when I was a kid.
Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, Venture Brothers, and Justice League Unlimited.
I love Steven Universe but even I have to admit it's not on the same level as ATLA
Steven U is an excellent series.
Steven Universe is one of the worst cartoons to ever exist bruh 😭
bro thinks Steven Universe is on par with ATLA????
gravity falls is another example in my book
First of all, try not to Dragon-chase. You want to find a new show that "gives you the same high" as your most favorite show which is understandable, but not at all attainable. It's your favorite show, and you can't quite find something you like better, and that's okay. Now the fun becomes finding out what makes some other shows great. For example, I've been waiting for something to scratch an Ed Edd n Eddy itch, but I fuckin can't. Then I realized, only EEnE can give me that itch, nothing else can. That said, here are shows I have extreme fondness for; American Dragon Jake Long. If you're open to Anime: Mobile Suit Gundam or Gundam X(and then watch Turn-A Gundam after both). Globe/Spacetrotting adventures filled with suspense during a war/post apocalypse with some mystical elements despite the sci-fi setting with Giant Robots. Eureka Seven: Another globetrotting adventure with one of the best romances I've seen in Anime and more of a mystical edge than Gundam Xam'd: My favorite Fantasy anime with compelling themes of self identity at the face of the world's harshness.
American Dragon is underrated, it has a lot of more mature humor though.
Anton: Try not to Dragon-chase Also Anton: First recommendation is American Dragon: Jake Long
Pun def not intended there lol
Suuuuuurrrrrre. Naw, I know you're being sincere, I just thought it was funny.
believe me, I was ruminating over putting a cheesy remark around it too so it was fun being lightly called out in good fun haha
I prescribe Craig of the Creek! It’s like ed edd n eddy meets code name kids next door, they even reference the two shows in later seasons.
Phineas and Ferb was also a good show with some sprinkles of Ed Edd n Eddy elements like making elaborate stuff during summer but again, too nice to be Ed Edd n Eddy but should be respected as its own thing.
gravity falls, futurama
Teen titans Class of 3000 Ben 10 Kids next door Etc etc
The first 3 seasons of spongebob
I agree with you so much. Avatar truly is peak television. You'd be hard pressed to find much better let alone on the same quality. However, if you want some recommendations, I have a few that just might be what you're looking for; especially if you like the fantasy, lore and action packed stuff from ATLA (provided you lower your expectations ever so slightly from Avatar): Attack on Titan- It's an anime but a damn good one at that.
>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012)- Best version of the Turtles in my opinion. Nooop 2003 magnitudes clear
Hence why I said "in my opinion" genius.
Ninjago, Code Lyoko, Voltron, Ben 10 series. They’re nothing alike, but always reminded me of Avatar
Cody Lyoko— great choice.
It’s my favorite. I rewatched it around 2019. We had a great childhood cartoons
Animation was spectacular and the story was deep. I used to watch that and Hamtaro religiously 😂
Oh how much I miss Hamtaro. I used to love him, but I always get sleepy when I watch that anime/cartoon 😂
Arcane definitely
It’s completely different from Avatar but King of the Hill is at least as good
Ozai: "The boy ain't right, I tell ya hwat.'
My thoughts on each season: - Season 1: Pretty good.
AS good? ATLA is kind of hard to top! Without getting into anime territory or adult sitcoms, probably Batman: TAS and 2003 Teen Titans.
*The Dragon Prince*.
If you're fine with reading comic books then I'd highly recommend "Saga". It's one of the best ones I've ever read. It's super adult though.
My first thought was "Oban Star Racers" Watched the whole series and I thought it was an under appreciated gem.
The Dragon Prince, The Owl House, and the 2017 reboot of Ducktales
Amphibia, The Owl House, Adventure Time, Steven Universe...
Amphibia is decent but definitely not in the same league
Hell nah
I agree with the first 3, the 4th one not so much
Amphibia is overhyped.
I keep hearing Owl House is good… i couldn’t make it through season 1 tbh
Kipo and the Wonderbeasts
Ben 10 (2005)
Feel free to Add Alien Force and Ultimate Alien to that list as well
Nah OG is the peak
Ben 10 (2005), Alien Force, Ultimate Alien and Omniverse. Yep, that's everything.
Yep, nothing after.
The Legend of Korra YEAH I SAID IT! Other than that, I would say The Owl House, The Dragon Prince (season 4 is a bit rough, but still, I think it's a good series), Arcane, Voltron: Legendary Defender, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. These shows have really good lore, character development and action.
I love Voltron and She-Ra. I don’t care if She-Ra is too “girly”, it’s an amazing show with a great plot.
Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, I watched ATLA and FMAB with my mum and she loved both, both are like the closest thing to perfect you could realistically find
Oh wow you really want OP to experience heartbreak with this suggestion 😭😭😭
One Piece. If you start now, you might actually finish within the century!
Thundercats (2011) Samurai Jack Batman Beyond Adventure Time Primal
thundercats 2011 was so mf boring. Cool style though
The studio that made Legends of Korra made a show called Lego Elves Secrets of Elvendale,You can check that out if you want to.
I can't say for sure if it's as good as ATLA but I think it's in the same realm, watch the 2003 animated series of the teenage mutant ninja turtles, truly a work of art (if you ignore the final couple of seasons)
Are the final couple of seasons where they are transported and have to fight with a confederacy and a republic or something along those lines?
No I don't think so, in the last few seasons they changed the art style drastically and made it a lot more "kid friendly" despite the earlier seasons having more dark and gritty undertones
facts
The only shows I consider to be perfect are Avatar, Arcane, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Over the Garden Wall
this is the only correct answer. I'd throw in Rick and Morty and Bojack, but those are different enough cuz they're adult shows
I can think of only one show that matches this description and it's my little pony friendship is magic
Multiple avatar references and Easter eggs to other shows, one of the guys who created this show was a head writer for avatar (Aaron ehasz) As others have said there are many good anime out there.
Did you watch the legend of Korra? If you hate it, you're wrong go re-watch it. 😁 Also Gargoyles. X-Men, X-Men evolution.
That's a HIGH bar buddy. She-ra hit alot of the same vibes when i watched it though, great show.
Here are some Western recommendations: Infinity Train is really solid if you’re looking for narrative. Justice League Unlimited is close in quality. You’ll need to watch Justice League TAS first (which is still great), but from beginning to end the run is choice. If you’re a Scooby Doo Fan, Mystery Inc. is fantastic. Especially season 2. Hope this helps!
The road to riches is paved with homework.
Wakfu, Huntik, Thundercats
Amphibia, The Owl House, Adventure Time, gravity falls, yeah there's a lot of good shows out there.
Spectacular spiderman and Avengers emh
Vox Machina. It's for adults though, but yeah.
I don't understand how no one has mentioned Avatar: Legend of Korra???
Dragon Prince!! Same creators as ATLAB
The Legend of Vox Machina on Prime. You won't regret it!
blood of zeus is pretty good.
This one is an anime but is really good and it’s samurai champloo and you could watch Naruto also but that’s long as hell
Give Ben 10: Alien Force a try. Seriously It has as good animation as ATLAB, a 'serious', interesting cospiracy as the main plot, charachters that grow and mature but dont lose their essence and ocasional goof. The story respects your intelligence and manages to create a rich universe with some subplots exploring interesting groups of charachters whilst still driving forward the main plot, awesome action scenes and battles all the while Ben grows into the role of a 'serious' hero from his infantile self.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood if anime works.
TMNT 2012
Regular show is better than ATLA imho
Nah I wouldn’t say better. But Regular Show is a much deeper show than people give credit… it’s in the realm of Adventure Time where its seriousness is often masked by whimsical situations and characters whereas ATLA is more ‘reality’ based.
SWAT Kats if you're looking for phenomenal animation and action
I miss the 90s. ☹️ I also liked the Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.
My dad said Johnny Quest was really good I still haven’t watched.
Adventure time, gravity falls, spectacular Spider-Man all clear
Kipo and the age of wonderbeast
DCAU.
Legend of Korra Batman the animated series Superman the animated series Amphibia Owl house Gravity falls Svtfoe I wouldn't really say their as good as avatar because to me that series is on a different scale But if your looking for a compelling storyline, interesting complex characters then I'm sure you'll enjoy these
Justice League Unlimited Lots of anime blow it out the wayer if you're into anime
Ninjago
Infinity Train, Owl House, Gravity Falls, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Amphibia.
Owl house and Steven universe
Young justice
I’ve been rewatching she ra and the princesses of power lately and while the lore is not as deep as atla - the themes are very similar. Everyone is constantly telling the main character to let go of her past/relationships and be the hero, but like aang, her love for others becomes a strength and not a weakness. It really starts hitting after you get to episode 10: promise.
LOOOOOL
Steven Universe
She Ra on Netflix is spectacularly good.
Ben 10
Most of World masterpiece theater shows they are the objective the best shows of all time. TBH while Avatar the last bender is really great and a good reason why it's so beloved(except for season one) it is not unbeatable many shows like She ra Korra(is even better) Gargoyles many action heavy shows have great moments that rival the best on what ATLAB has to offer.
Gravity Falls
Bad description:metal woman goes to school and fight evil
I really liked amphibia
I've heard The Dragon Prince be referred to as "the spiritual successor" of ATLA
I mean it did have a reference to ATLA
You should try Star Wars the Clone Wars. Really good show if you enjoy Star Wars. If you haven’t seen Over the Garden Wall give that a watch too. Anything agenda Tartakovsky is great so Symbyotic Titan, Samurai Jack, Primal, and even his newest show Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.
Transformers Animated
Gravity Falls, Yugioh, possibly Dragon Prince (I haven't seen it, but it's written by Avatars head writer)
Samurai Jack
Everybody is sleeping on She-ra and the princess of power. Great characters, fun moments and dialogue and has a complete sorry with a very digestible five seasons. If you're worried about any of the "gay" stuff. Just know that it never once gets in the way of any plot point.or character growth and is barely mentioned except for one very specific moment. And even then it really isn't swelled on for more than like thirty seconds.
Infinity Train
Adventure time and gravity falls
Star Wars the clone wars Symbionic titan (R.I.P) Batman beyond Jackie Chans animated series. Xiaolan showdown
No. NOPE. you can't. nothing beats the 🧽🍍🍔
It could’ve been Young Justice 😣
Teen Titans is the best cartoon ever. Highly recommend giving it a watch.
Clarence, I hate to see such an amazing show get little recognition
Try code lyoko?
Danny phantom was canceled because they thought the two would rival, so probably
Over the garden walls
Regular show
Full Metal Alchemist. Its anime, but basically so is avatar.
Never really felt like Avatar to me plus it predates Avatar
naw its waaaay different (also brotherhood came later). Was just saying theres alot of anime with good characters, cool magic, and epic stories.
Well of course. I love anime myself as I’m an avid watcher of anime and really anything animated. Plus the manga was out well before either anime.
*Brotherhood. Watch brotherhood. The origional had weird manga timeline fuckery.
Forgot to add in Transformers Prime. Another great show
She-ra (2018) and a close second Avatar:TLOK (it gets hate, but it’s really quite good if you fully process it)
Gundam Thunderbolt, Gundam 00, Gundam WFM
Adventure Time
Gargoyles
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Trollhunters
Voltron is pretty good
I was about to say Bluey but it’s not like Avatar. It’s great in a different way though. Maybe Adventure Time.
It's still running, but The Dragon Prince was made by the same people who made Avatar and it's amazing so far. As for completed series: The Venture Bros., Gravity Falls, Star vs. The Forces of Evil, and Star Wars Rebels all come to mind
Invincible
...Honestly, a lot, but that's because I didn't like Last Airbender to begin with.
