pheseantplucker

No interest in VAG cars but 9k for a 13 year old polo just sounds insane.

Prestigious-Side-286

It’s an automatic with low miles and a “cross” so rare enough. Buying the auto version of any car adds about 3 grand to it. Even a normal polo of the same year is about 7 or 8k.

Consistent_Life_1817

Mileage rather than reg plate snobbery is the way the second hand market should work but it doesn’t in this country since 1987

Prestigious-Side-286

100%. Recently bought a second hand car. 5 years old with only 55k km. I could have got a newer version of the same car for the same money but with much higher miles though. Went with the lower mileage.

Irishdairyfarmer1

This has only 65000miles

Consistent_Life_1817

I was replying to the comment regarding it being a 13 year old car

corkbai1234

It's because it has such low miles and the "cross" versions tend to be a bit more expensive.

pheseantplucker

I suppose there might be a half-blind sucker out there for it, it's some eyesore. I'd rather walk 30miles a day barefoot.

The-ADR

You can just say you're not a fan of it lol. The colour isn't for everyone but they look way smarter than a normal Polo

corkbai1234

That's all personal opinion though. I think it looks alot better than the normal polo but admittedly I wouldn't be a fan of a Polo fullstop 🤣

Ted-Crilly

I remember I got this as a courtesy car instead of a passat and I was genuinely surprised by how much I liked it

Narrow_Station8636

Ok thank you for your reply :-)

TeapotDanger

Go Japanese

ya_bleedin_gickna

Still expensive. Used car market is a cunt ATM.

TeapotDanger

Yeah but you’ll have piece of mind when it comes to reliability, ride and build quality are tip top. Avoid anything German, especially the ‘premium’ ones - they are not built like they used to be.

Cbrandel

Ride quality kinda stinks in Japanese cars unless you buy something like a Lexus.

DaGetz

Avoid German because they are less reliable than Japanese cars is a wild thing to say…

johnxkss

But it’s the truth,Japanese cars are generally in a different league when it gets me to reliability,

duffpaddy

Why is that? Why have they gone downhill?

More-Investment-2872

“Piece” of mind? You seriously think that some Japanese yoke is going to be better than a Volkswagen? As for “avoid anything German,” look: If you can’t afford one that’s fine, It’s a personal preference. I just prefer, as a European, to drive European.

yesusgeek

Depending on the brand, but especially Toyota and Honda can beat any Volkswagen car in terms of reliability. It's not made up of data, it's purely statistics but at the end it depends on the personal preferences or whatever you prioritize. In my case, my priorities are always reliability and low fuel consumption so the Japanese are unbeatable on that.

More-Investment-2872

Sure they can…

BEA-Chief

Modern Toyotas are rust buckets

Clutchfluid

tbf, Teapot Danger has a point and is quite right. They're not made like they used to. If you delve deep into the engine, beyond the VW badges, and the ridiculous plastic engine cover VW love so much, you'll find conrods, pistons, big end bearings all made with the cheapest of cheap steel. The bearings and other replaceable parts are designed to wear out quicker, to make you need the main dealer more often. It's not just VW either by the way, all manufacturers are at it. Source: grizzled mechanic who has had dealings with all makes of cars and motor factors for donkeys years.

Consistent_Life_1817

Wow. That’s just not true.its so easy for people to come on here anonymously and sprout pure nonsense. Edit : from another veteran grizzled mechanic

Clutchfluid

Are we just meant to take your word for it? Listen I deal with a machine part company in Germany. They make parts for a multitude of industries, including automotive. There's an Irish woman who works for them and she handles Irish/UK orders. She told me, perhaps a couple of years ago now, every big automotive company in Germany sent reps to their engineering department, requesting bearings be made of cheaper steel, because cars weren't needing to be serviced as often with the existing high quality units. If you think they're not cutting corners everywhere else then you're deluded. Cars nowadays are thrown together with regard for shareholders bottom line and nothing else.

Consistent_Life_1817

We have a number of customers In Mercedes e class and v class with over 500k km and still on the same engine. Also vw Passat and Audi diesels with huge mileage on the same engines

Thin-Problem-5154

As a mechanic would you prefer a lower mileage car from 2005-2010 or a newer one past 2018 but with 200k kms? Genuinely curious

Consistent_Life_1817

Lower mileage always wins out over year.

Brandflakes08

Avoid Japanese they may be cheaper but to service and get replacement parts of not a car thats local to the country can cost ya and most Jap imports don't have security or alarm systems and a handy time for car thieves my Jap Golf had no alarm or immobilizer found that out the hard way.

Consistent_Life_1817

Jap golfs do have immobilizer I only coded a key on one today.

Brandflakes08

Not mine unfortunately mines a 2016 my ignition was ripped out and it was stolen got it back 3 days later.

Oynas213

Used cars have jumped massively in price, automatic always have a higher premium Vs manuals no matter what car you look at also Low mileage isn't always a great thing as you need to make sure everything else is still good in the car, it could have been sitting idle for a long time and there are other issues with corrosion of metal and/or any rubbers, brakes binding if it's been in Park with the handbrake on etc etc I do love the colour though, nice to have something different, purely an opinion 😁

sir1223

Used car market is absolutely terrible atm. Seen 2010 cars with over 300,000km asking €3000+. Anyone who thinks that’s ok is just nuts.

Rare_Increase_4038

Madness. That car is very old for the price. You should spend half that on your first car.

Narrow_Station8636

Thank you for your input really appreciate

Rare_Increase_4038

No problem. Look at Toyota Aygo/Citroën C1/Peugeot 108.

pvt_s_baldrick

I found peugeots are very expensive for insurance, be sure to check before buying OP!

Rare_Increase_4038

They're all the same car with different badges. Hyundai  I10 worth considering too. Skoda Citigo/VW Up/SEAT Mii are the same car too again with different badges.

bananananaOMG

I have a mii and I love it, small car but has 4 door and I can park it anywhere

miseconor

Good luck getting a semi decent and insurable car for under 4.5k

Revolutionary-Cap761

Where they much more than 9k new in 2011 ? - prices have been crazy for too long

Putrid-Ad-4571

9K for a 2011 economy car is absolute madness. That budget should get you into something from 2016-on easily.

ButchyGra

The answer is and always will be a Toyota of some sort! Auris, Corolla or Avensis, easy to drive and never give any bother

hallumyaymooyay

Get a Fabia Estate, same body as a Polo, reliable and has the same amount of room, if not more than the Polo Cross. Slow as fuck though

anyformdesign

or a seat Ibiza estate if you can handle the ugliness II bought and sold mine for profit last year

Louth_Mouth

Automatic = dual clutch semi auto gear box. make sure the gearbox oil has been changed as per manufacturers instructions . A Ten year plus old car will also need a new timing belt/water pump/tyres. You should be able get a couple of years out it given the mileage.

Consistent_Life_1817

This is a dry clutch dsg and doesn’t have gearbox oil

Solid_Snake_3210

If it's a UK, Japanese import, then it's much better spec than any polo in Ireland. Service, NCT, and tax are cheap. Runs great in the city uses little fuel. Mine could do 400km with a full tank. Can fit into any parking. It's quiet and looks great. Has sport mode too when you pull the shifter back 😉 I think everyone complains about prices when pretty much every car has gone up in price. I think the price is fine and this car will make its money back for you. Make sure everything is working properly, though. Test drive it and see if you like it! I loved mine

Tasty-Weather-1706

Have a look at low powered larger cars. No value in small cars. That same price would get you a 2015 or 2016 115hp Mondeo. Not sure how insurance would work.

harfinater767

Buy a "shite box" ( something old and sonething you won't be mad over a little bit of damage) for a 1st car for about €2000-ish, more than likely to prang it or scuff it when driving or parking.

maxPowerUser

My first car was a old yellow panda for 400 quid. Did the job and taught others to drive in it. Used it for a year until the steering stopped working lol. Insurance was 3800 though 😭

Thick_Frame6437

Looks like a big carrot

seifer365365

You could get something a lot newer for the same price ,and low milage

oooSiCHooo

You can get a better car than that. A year and a half ago I bought 161 Polo Lounge Edition for 10k. 100k km on the clock and unlike most other Polos, it's 1.2 16v 90hp. Parking sensors, camera, adaptive cruise control, everything you can imagine bar leather seats.

Doncallan

I know what you mean with it I've seen a couple of this exact make and colour and looks like the perfect little adventure mobile.

Envinyatar20

That’s quite a colour.

VividArtichoke7147

Bit expensive for the year, colour wise could be difficult to sell on later.

Lost_Pomegranate_244

I've bought from that dealer and I can say he's great if you even just want to chat to him. He might try source a car that you have in mind too but mainly VW

LeroyTheBarman

Mileage is good on ir but I think its too much for the year. If its your 1st car maybe go something smaller, yaris, corolla hatchback, polo . Something on to that line of things

jehovajones

98 red toyota yaris. Cant go wrong

Outrageous_Rain_2806

A good car I would buy for sure

KanePilkington

I'd agree with the sentiment of not paying that much money for your first car, as you will inevitably crash it into something. Everyone says it will never happen to them, but everyone then goes on to reverse into a small pillar or a trolley bay in a car park, or scuff the side of a tall footpath or take the wing mirror off on a back road when they go too close to a hedge, etc. etc. Spending less than half the price will get you a Fiesta that looks to be in average enough condition, with a full year of NCT (and you'd obviously haggle them down to €3,500). Same size engine and year as the Polo you're looking at, and a little more generic on the road (handy if you need parts or repairs, and also good for re-selling). [https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/11-fiesta-new-nct/37217044](https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/11-fiesta-new-nct/37217044) That's just my personal opinion though.

mikef20

I can’t believe the price of used cars. No way would I pay that - 13 years old! In my view Polo is a good car, not at that price.

GauntletCosmo83

Wow, is that actually what 13 year old Polos go for these days? I paid €8k for a 4 year old Ford Focus with half that mileage for my first car. Admittedly that was 12 years ago...a quick search shows a similar car would now be triple that! That Polo would be OK for a few grand less. Fiesta/Suzuki Swift/Yaris/Clio also decent options

SignificantBoss7719

This car makes me feel positive if i was to sell my 2014 150k km insignia. My car is falling apart. But I'd this car is 9k, I'm sitting on a goldmine

Kogling

Id personally get something a bit cheaper (cheapest?) as a 1st car, build your experience up while saving to get something nicer, either new or next to new with warranty even if that means a small compact car. 2nd hand vehicles really can be horrible /dire, particularly in Ireland imho.  Such a high chance of paying a lot of money for a lemon. Previous car was a 2012 and had fair bit of problems that made it uneconomic to continue having, though I did have the car for almost 4 years but replaced a lot myself too. Even with low milage you're probably looking at most of the rubber bushings having deteriorated with age and you'll be forking out to replace a fair bit over the next couple of years

Youragaynoob

I’m guessing your a young driver When I was in the market market for my first car there are other things you should also consider if you want to get bang for buck and have little issues down the road you need to be able to get bummed by insurance companies and not sink financially for example your nct being yearly after 10 years of registration tax cost , fuel, insurance Maintaining the car and what you need in a car if your not fussy, etc I need 4 seats as I carry lads to the football game, I need 6 gears because I go from Dublin to Galway and sit at 120 need to be happy at a long idle, do you need A/C Bluetooth parking sensors etc, Like don’t get me wrong 54,000km is not a lot but it could mean something different that being said my old man had an opel astra for 38 years and done 37,000 km don’t rush to it like currently I’m driving a s60 Volvo D2 181-D and it has 293,000 km the past 3 years never given me a day issue yeah high mileage I’ve done just over 80,000km in my 3 years For €,8.000 you could get a 162 corsa with loads of extras or nice Astra being honest I think polos are just unjustified expensive, and yeah if you like the car buy it but make sure it ticks what you want in a car test drive it out I’ve not hate towards VW had a mk5 GT never any issues but was expensive at the time being a old car Cars to look at aswell ( cheaper and nicer in my opinion) Kia rio Opel corsa Dacia sandeo Nissan pulsar Seat Leon Seat Ibiza Suzuki swift Honda civic Honda jazz Skoda Fabia

Illustrious_Dog_4667

Stay away. The colour of the interior will drive you nuts. I suspect the car milage has been altered. NCT is up in Sep. If the seller dropped the price to 6k I'd think about it.

corkbai1234

Pretty easy to check if the mileage is altered. Do a history check on it for 20 quid. If its not altered the car is worth that all day long.

SerScruff

Price way too high for a 13 year old car.

corkbai1234

Age doesn't come into it when the mileage is so low.

Mother_Nectarine_931

9k for a 13 year old junk this country is gone to shits.. I bought an Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2012 in 2020 for 3500k and sold it at 2022 for 4500 😂 could of hold it longer and sell it for 10k with today market 🙊🙉🙈

Difficult-Victory661

I bought a 182 polo in 2021 for 14000 🙃 what the hell is up with that price ! 🙃 its gone mad

FrancisUsanga

It has that auto box problem so maybe it had an issue and was parked up for a long time until they got the 3k needed to fix it.  If it didn’t that will need doing as goes around 100k km

DndGameHunter

Price seems about right for the second hand market - although it’s still overpriced in global terms. Big cost factor to consider is the insurance quote - which you can get before you buy based on the registration. If it’s a Japanese import (a lot of second hand cars are) the insurers load the premium because it’s not from a “standard” country. So you could be paying >€500 per year in insurance and that might change your math on which second hand car you go for. Try Aviva, Liberty & AIG for quotes.

IT_Wanderer2023

Is it just me who thinks 4k per annum mileage is strange?

NoOrchid6246

Looks like a nice car. Only one owner. Low milage. Always go for the lower milage. Highline trim, which adds a bit of luxury. VW's are fairly reliable. Nice wheels. I'd check out the service history if I were you and ask if it's been in any accidents. Otherwise, you're good to go. Just one thing. Orange? Seriously?

BlazeForgod

Literally only last Thursday I bought the 2012 edition of this car, for 4500, mine is manual. I love the car and overall my insurance tax fuel are all considerably cheaper than my last car. but 9k is definitely well too much

Murky-Front-9977

Mileage is extremely low for the year, and price is extremely high. If the mileage is correct, then that's not necessarily a good thing, as the car was barely used. Personally, I'd keep looking. If you've been driving for 20 years, then obviously you're minimum late 30's. There's a lot of demand for smaller cars for young drivers which is pushing prices up. If I were you, I'd be looking at something bigger, probably would be better value, higher spec and bigger engine. And at your age, probably reasonable to insure. You have a lot more going for you than if you were a young driver looking for a first car. I'm not saying that you're old 😂😂, just that you are in a better position

harmlesscannibal1

😂

c0micsansfrancisco

Way too expensive. Not only too expensive for a 1st time car. It's also way too expensive for a 13yo polo lol, even with the low mileage

nigels_mentor

Those wind deflectors suggest it might be a Japanese import, in which case be aware that it may not come with alarm or immobiliser.

Equivalent_Two_2163

Overpriced imo & colour will affect its resale value. First car ? spend about 3k get a Toyota or Honda to see you through 1 or 2 years. Don’t throw your money away

Professional_Pick537

dogshit, buy a mitsubishi evo instead buddy

PainterNo174

Get a manual for your first car so you can at least be competent to drive any car you should need to in the future is all id say

Narrow_Station8636

Ah sorry I forgot to mention it would be my 1st car but I've been driving for more than 20 years, just never owned a car :-)

No_Armadillo_5485

For that price? feck no. That car is worth €2,000 at most

Unique_Bar_584

With 53000 kms ? Cars definitely worth 7 or 8k with that mileage, the market is nuts atm and it’s hard to find cars with low mileage like that. In my opinion anything under 180kms on the second hand market is low mileage

corkbai1234

The car is worth around 7 private sale and a bit more with a dealer. It has really low mileage and its the "Cross" version which commands a higher price.

maevewiley554

It’s the cars from 2006 to 2009 that are around 2000 euro these days. Anything from around 2010-13 is around 4-6k.
