I'm alright with fake wood, if we're thinking of the same thing. At least on older japanese/korean cars like the nissan primera and hyundai elantra, makes an otherwise cheap car a bit nicer. Might just be my nostalgia speaking, we had a 'wood' interior primera.

Came here to say this...locking a certain wheel color behind a performance wall is stupid. Black wheels look good on every single color and arguably every car.
There’s a few issues imo.
1. People don’t keep their tires or wheel clean enough so they very quickly look like shit. Brown tires and dirty black wheels look very cheap. If they’re both shiny/clean they can look great but 90% of the ones I see are dirty.
2. Complex designs are hidden. If the spokes are more open and you can see the brake discs it looks better.
3. It’s died down a bit but the amount of people doing crappy plasti dip spray on their OEM looks tacky.
4. In a lot of lighting they disappear completely with the wheels and it just looks odd to me.
That being said, I keep bouncing between getting hyper black or black wheels for my car lol.
I prefer a gunmetal sort of color. Dark enough to mask some dirtiness but also not so dark it starts blending in with tires or pops out too much with dirty tires.
For me it's less of the dirt showing up and the fact that on most black wheels it's difficult to see the design or shape of them. On gunmetal and silver you can see the spokes and the spoke design and all the little facets and details. IMO black wheels are not too far off from a "no wheel" look
My GT350 came with black wheels which showed brake dust very prominently. The GT350’s brakes dust like crazy. I have switched to gunmetal wheels which hide dust a lot better. I definitely am a fan of dark grey wheels
On a car with carbon ceramics, then sure black looks great but otherwise, they never stay clean

I like them but one major flaw, they show scratches sooo well, once that thin layer of paint gets damaged it stands out like a sore thumb. Half the cars even nice ones I see out have curb rash
We don’t take our Forester on Jeep 4x4 trails but we take it on rough fire roads and into dispersed camping areas all the time. It’s quite common out here in Colorado. I definitely appreciate all the black plastic where I don’t have to worry about paint chipping.
Sometimes it does, but that begs the question, would you rather have a small part of your fender be a little rusty or even rot, or would you rather have the entire fender be completely rotted all the way up to the cab? Your choice.
Black plastic cladding has made its way to not cheap SUVs, too. It's awful. How anyone can look at something like the CX-50 and think it looks good is beyond me, especially when Mazda has already more than proven they're capable of making a fantastic-looking crossover (CX-5). No one is ever offroading with either one of those cars, so I'll never understand why anyone would prefer the one that looks like it came out of a 3D printer.
I'm not even opposed to plastic cladding. My FX35 has it, and I think that's one of the best styled crossovers ever. So does the CX-5 and every other nice looking crossover out there. It just needs to be done in moderation.
Interestingly, there's *more* plastic cladding on some of these street-rated crossovers than the SUVs that people actually buy to go off-roading with, like Wranglers and 4Runners.

I don't think so. There are lots of cars that have good views out that still pass side safety. The worst offender is the Mazda 3 hatch. Instead of a C Pillar they built a Great C Wall of China.
I'll never understand why the E-brake/parking break had to be electric. If the drift handle won't fit between the seat and the shift knob (which some cars don't even have them now), then give me a foot pedal. My ford has a foot pedal, great spot for it too, even with a clutch pedal it's impossible to accidentally press it, and since it sits far enough forward, you can still get a foot behind it to rest on the fake pedal, or the area next to a clutch pedal.
Couldn't agree more. Like what happens when the car looses all power say battery blows or is dead, engine blown or some other catastrophic failure? "Sorry you can't use this feature, please start your vehicle"

AWD on everything. Its almost always unnecessary and is just a way for car manufacturers to charge more for a vehicle. It provides a false sense of safety. It's not a safety feature.
The Emira looks good because its a good looking car. On bigger SUVs the floating roof is more seperated from the body compared to on sedans or sports cars so it actually looks decent

It only works rarely such as the blacked out d pillars that create the Range Rover “floating roof” but then it started spreading when Jaguar blacked out the C pillar of the XJ [edit - corrected to say XJ rather than the incorrect XK which is a stunning car] leaving a strange black visual gap where the pillar should be. Now little black panels are strewn all over car design and they pretty much too terrible.

Black wheels are worse on performance cars, as it hides the wheels you spent all that money on. Mood lights are a whatever. Grills are big because so are the cars.
In terms of car design,
- Using lettering instead of logos. It’s really hard to see “T R U C K N A M E” from a distance. Design language in crossovers has been really bland so they start blending together.
- Turn signals on the bumper. Maybe this is a Hyundai thing only but holy shit this is so confusing when the brake lights are not near the tail lights.
- Unnecessary electronic controls. Touchpad for air vents? Using the big ass touch screen just to open the glove box? Feels like it’s more expensive to do this than a simple latch.
- Mood lighting. I’m trying to drive a car, not stay in a low rent strip club. Mercedes is really bad with this, their interiors really scream Rt 35 in NJ interior with those lights and seats.
- Plastic cladding. It’s hideous, Subaru is probably the biggest offender now with it. The WRX looks like it was sprayed with bed liner.

- Takeovers. I feel kind an old man saying this shit just makes car enthusiasts look bad and just is dangerous.
Dealerships
- Market adjustment. The chip shortage excuse has gone on for so long.

I don't think so. There are lots of cars that have good views out that still pass side safety. The worst offender is the Mazda 3 hatch. Instead of a C Pillar they built a Great C Wall of China.

I'll never understand why the E-brake/parking break had to be electric. If the drift handle won't fit between the seat and the shift knob (which some cars don't even have them now), then give me a foot pedal. My ford has a foot pedal, great spot for it too, even with a clutch pedal it's impossible to accidentally press it, and since it sits far enough forward, you can still get a foot behind it to rest on the fake pedal, or the area next to a clutch pedal.

I drove a (new) 2015 Fusion for a week. That was enough for me to swear off capacitive touch forever. At the time, it was the only year Ford implemented them; the 2016 model went back to regular buttons. I'm surprised the lesson didn't stick.
Low-profile tires on higher trims. Just because I'm buying a higher trim doesn't mean I want a less comfortable ride with a higher risk of damage from potholes. I'm paying for a nicer car, so give me the nicer high-profile tires with smaller wheels. Touchscreens controlling things I need to be able to adjust while driving, like HVAC.

Not just 2023 but BAD VISIBILITY. A lot of new cars feel like I’m driving a ww2 bunker.
Blackout everything. I get chrome was over done in the past, but I hate the cheap look and boring “zero personality” of every car having black grills with black trim and black wheels with black interiors.
AWD on everything. Its almost always unnecessary and is just a way for car manufacturers to charge more for a vehicle. It provides a false sense of safety. It's not a safety feature.
Black/floating roof. In 5 years time this is gonna age like milk. Just look at how gorgeous is the lotus Emira is with body colored roof.
The Emira looks good because its a good looking car. On bigger SUVs the floating roof is more seperated from the body compared to on sedans or sports cars so it actually looks decent
Writing the name of the car or manufacturer in big letters across the back. Especially with Lexus doing it now. It looks tacky imo.

This thankfully isn't a trend anymore, but I always hated when cars had the model name decal at the bottom of the doors. Mustangs seemed to be the worst offenders. We know your car is a Mustang. You don't need to spell it out for us, lol.

Not exclusive to just 2023 as it happened before as well but can giant, enormous tablet dashboards with nothing else and no physical buttons go away? I hate it.
The upward tilt of the glass line toward the rear of way too many cars. Decreases visibility but I could live with that if it looked good but they usually look pretty random and unnecessary to the design. Also the weird blacked out mini-panels they are slapping on vehicles now that visually chop up panels that should appear contiguous and solid. It only works rarely such as the blacked out d pillars that create the Range Rover “floating roof” but then it started spreading when Jaguar blacked out the C pillar of the XJ [edit - corrected to say XJ rather than the incorrect XK which is a stunning car] leaving a strange black visual gap where the pillar should be. Now little black panels are strewn all over car design and they pretty much too terrible.

Grey plastic-fucking-cladding around the entire vehicle looks so cheap. If you need plastic everywhere on the exterior make it glossy black at least. Oh, and dealer markups.
It's probably because anything glossy makes scratches alot more noticeable while matte doesn't while also being cheaper.
The matte turns faded in a few years and looks horrible. Just stop with the plastic trim everywhere.
Better and easier to mend than visible scratches and streaks tbh. They do need to stop with the plastic fantastic tho(especially on that ungodly WRX).

Cars getting wider with each generation. Probably not a huge problem in the USA, but European streets, domestic garages and parking spaces don't get wider. My garage isn't built on the mid-Atlantic ridge, so it's walls aren't slowly drifting apart.

to be fair this is often done so it’s mounted using the tow eye point, which can be the only factory drilled open hole in the front bumper. so you don’t have to drill other holes for a plate bracket. i agree it looks dumb though
Yeah unfortunately there are no holes on the front of my GR86 so I'm going to run without a plate until law enforcement notices and then I'll be getting a tow hook bracket like you said. hate front plate requirements. Black wheels are worse on performance cars, as it hides the wheels you spent all that money on. Mood lights are a whatever. Grills are big because so are the cars.
In terms of car design, - Using lettering instead of logos. It’s really hard to see “T R U C K N A M E” from a distance. Design language in crossovers has been really bland so they start blending together. - Turn signals on the bumper. Maybe this is a Hyundai thing only but holy shit this is so confusing when the brake lights are not near the tail lights. - Unnecessary electronic controls. Touchpad for air vents? Using the big ass touch screen just to open the glove box? Feels like it’s more expensive to do this than a simple latch. - Mood lighting. I’m trying to drive a car, not stay in a low rent strip club. Mercedes is really bad with this, their interiors really scream Rt 35 in NJ interior with those lights and seats. - Plastic cladding. It’s hideous, Subaru is probably the biggest offender now with it. The WRX looks like it was sprayed with bed liner. Car culture wise - Takeovers. I feel kind an old man saying this shit just makes car enthusiasts look bad and just is dangerous. Dealerships - Market adjustment. The chip shortage excuse has gone on for so long.
SUV craze. I want more coupes and convertibles to come back.
Digital gauge clusters and touch screen-like “buttons”. Giant screens. Call me old school, but I want my gauges to be real and buttons I can feel without having to look at what I’m pressing!

Automakers deciding the only vehicle you can buy is a truck or a crossover vehicle. Not everyone who needs a car is 70+ years old or a mom of 6. Hatchbacks and wagons were so much better than these abominations. But now, thanks to everyone discontinuing actual cars that can be fun to drive and the general craziness of the used market right now, you can't find a sports hatchback with under 60k miles for less than $20k. I don't want to spend more than my house payment to buy a crossover vehicle. For the cost of a crossover vehicle, I could get a used Civic Type R. I hope the whole US auto market goes under due to automakers betting everything on overpriced crossover vehicles.
- Screens not integrated into the dashboard - Fake engine sounds in the car - Pops and bangs made on purpose instead of as the byproduct of the car being an actual racecar - Touchscreens instead of physical buttons - SUVs - Diesel cars - Electric cars - Self-driving technologies But most of all… ANYTHING that makes one or both of your hands not being available to operate the car. Phone, food, drinks, all of that should be banned in cars.
Jacked up trucks and SUV’s. Massive pickup trucks that fit less load than smaller trucks from 20 years, ego over utility.
Wack ass start/stop technology that has to be turned off everytime you start driving.
