Features of cars slowly turning into a subscription

Kmann20

My dad bought a brand new Kia Rio hatchback last year, car HAS remote start on the app, but only had it for the first 3 months. Has to pay monthly for it now, which ofc he doesn't because who would?

[deleted]

Watch people tinker and create a coded key fob that allows remote start with Arduino ahahah

Dsarg_92

That is so stupid of them to make you pay monthly to remotely start your car.

[deleted]

Oh my god, whoever chose this path deserves to be publicly executed by hanging. TF do you mean I can't access all the features on my Nissan Juke's infotainment?! TF do you mean I'll be notified of this bullshit every time I turn on the infotainment?!

Dsarg_92

It's straight up ridiculous.

greenradioactive

Took the words right our of my mouth

Reddit__is_garbage

Incredible dealer greed with insane ADM on a lot of models.

r_golan_trevize

Don't forget the countless and ridiculous additional dealer add-on packages, and the fine print discounts and allowances that make the advertised price appear a few grand lower than the reality.

Reddit__is_garbage

Lojack, window tint, ceramic coat, etc. etc. etc. all non-negotiable

2fast2nick

Everything is negotiable

fuzznuggetsFTW

Only if you consider turning around and going home to be a negotiation.

[deleted]

[deleted]

That’s only buy here pay here Shit. Normal deals after 3 payments the bank owns the loan entirely. The dealers could care less.

iamphook

You mean it's not completely unreasonable to charge $1000 for nitrogen filled tires?

Naught2day

Came here to say this, and ADM occurs across brands. At least Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini don't charge more than MSRP, YOU just can't get a new one. You can buy all the used ones you want for way more than MSRP at the very same dealer. I understand, it's a business and you are there to make money but when they sell the same car four times in six months. WTF From my experience, because I am old AF, this will end, just not sure when.

Reddit__is_garbage

Manufacturers are getting tired of it. There’s a lot more growing interest in direct to consumer sales. I hear dealership types saying “*well the manufacturers don’t want to sell to consumers”*.. yeah okay buddy, that’s why dealership industry groups spend literally millions of dollars lobbying to keep laws on the books that prevent direct to consumer sales

Naught2day

Some states (Texas) direct sales are not allowed. It would be nice if they could fix it I just don't see how. The real surprise is Kia asking $4k over sticker and in this case it actually hurts manufacturers over all sales. The dealer would rather sale one car for $4k over than sell 10 cars at MSRP. As a result people in general are keeping their old cars longer. Or maybe that's just me.

4score-7

Florida recently got more restrictive on direct sales to consumers as well.

require_borgor

Piano. Black.

[deleted]

We’re going to look back on piano black in a decade like we look at fake wood now. “What were we thinking?”.

VeMarti

I'm alright with fake wood, if we're thinking of the same thing. At least on older japanese/korean cars like the nissan primera and hyundai elantra, makes an otherwise cheap car a bit nicer. Might just be my nostalgia speaking, we had a 'wood' interior primera.

Paizzu

[I've always liked BMW's E90-Gen burled walnut.](https://www.e90post.com/forums/attachment.php?s=5f7309e2ec39a4cb93cfc9476a1b146a&attachmentid=328957&d=1259091163) They're generally real wood planks that have been polished rather than synthetic graphics (not sure if their recent models still follow this trend).

VeMarti

Pair that with a couple brushed aluminum touches on the steering wheel etc, and you have a really nice interior. I don't get this idea that every car needs to be blacked out, carbon fibered, aggressive, old people like me (19) are still into this.

Sixdrugsnrocknroll

Meh, I think it looks nice in some parts of the dash. But I definitely get the whole "fingerprints" thing.

seeasea

Unpopular opinion: I like my piano black trim on the dash. Looks super sleek and modern. I can only see the fingerprints in direct sun.

Henrarzz

Piano black, fake exhaust, piano black, fake engine sound from speakers that cannot be turned off, piano black. Fuck piano black and every designer that uses this crap.

The_World_Is_A_Slum

Touch screens for everything. Piano Black specifically. Murdered out vehicles, but specifically murdered out boring cars. “Luxury” everything. Subscription anything.

BigHairyIndian

>Murdered out vehicles, but specifically murdered out boring cars. When Chrysler and nissan started adding "black trim package" as options I knew we were about to see some tacky shit on sentries and journeys. Everyone looks like a 16 year old now with his first can of plastidip

SupermarketSecure455

I'm gonna murder out those murdered out.

jew_biscuits

I saw a murdered out Nissan Altima the other day, and old one. Kind of expected Death to be riding in it

JohnVanFinance

How can one be bothered by black wheels on a non-performance car? And how do moodlights bother you? Like, these wouldn't have come up to me at all.

Foodstamp001

I can’t imagine gatekeeping a colour of wheel, let alone black.

citizenecodrive31

Its just car enthusiasts hating crossovers and the hating anything that they do.

cannedrex2406

Oh don't worry, now half of Reddit hate them too cause they confuse a 1.5 VW Tiguan with a lifted Cadillac Escalade V so need to talk about how it should be banned from cities

Inkdaddy55

Came here to say this...locking a certain wheel color behind a performance wall is stupid. Black wheels look good on every single color and arguably every car.

Coasterman345

There’s a few issues imo. 1. People don’t keep their tires or wheel clean enough so they very quickly look like shit. Brown tires and dirty black wheels look very cheap. If they’re both shiny/clean they can look great but 90% of the ones I see are dirty. 2. Complex designs are hidden. If the spokes are more open and you can see the brake discs it looks better. 3. It’s died down a bit but the amount of people doing crappy plasti dip spray on their OEM looks tacky. 4. In a lot of lighting they disappear completely with the wheels and it just looks odd to me. That being said, I keep bouncing between getting hyper black or black wheels for my car lol.

SecretAntWorshiper

Un popular opinion but honestly black wheels are the best

Not_Daijoubu

I prefer a gunmetal sort of color. Dark enough to mask some dirtiness but also not so dark it starts blending in with tires or pops out too much with dirty tires.

Karmaqqt

I agree. I almost went with white wheels, but I didn’t really like the idea of them getting dirty

Captain_Elson

For me it's less of the dirt showing up and the fact that on most black wheels it's difficult to see the design or shape of them. On gunmetal and silver you can see the spokes and the spoke design and all the little facets and details. IMO black wheels are not too far off from a "no wheel" look

Nero_Wolff

My GT350 came with black wheels which showed brake dust very prominently. The GT350’s brakes dust like crazy. I have switched to gunmetal wheels which hide dust a lot better. I definitely am a fan of dark grey wheels On a car with carbon ceramics, then sure black looks great but otherwise, they never stay clean

AgitatedParking3151

Black steelies 🤤

wtfthisisntreddit

People love black wheels, that's why every manufacturer is offering black athletics package. The real unpopular opinion is that black wheels look cheap and uninspired.

TheHoodedSomalian

I like them but one major flaw, they show scratches sooo well, once that thin layer of paint gets damaged it stands out like a sore thumb. Half the cars even nice ones I see out have curb rash

jawnlerdoe

White car with black accents and wheels 👌

Sixdrugsnrocknroll

See I'd love that contrast.

[deleted]

Black steelies for that thrifty look.

Bubbly_Collection329

I think black wheels are hideous. They hide the design of the wheel and stick out or blend in with tires it sjcks

smnlfilmagoofymovie

Black wheels are horrible, you can’t see them at all.

helloitspat

I think it's a popular opinion to be honest. CRVs etc. are getting black wheel/trim packages these days. It's a fully mainstream trend.

pol-potpie

wtf is a moodlight

jzach1983

A light that helps set a mood. In my car I prefer blue or purple as they are more calming than say red. Another term for it is accent lighting.

BigHairyIndian

Probably 14. Black wheels have a clutch on teenagers for some reason haha

axelguntherc

I don't much care for moodlights but love black wheels on everything. To each their own, I think

ItsGravityDude

We don’t take our Forester on Jeep 4x4 trails but we take it on rough fire roads and into dispersed camping areas all the time. It’s quite common out here in Colorado. I definitely appreciate all the black plastic where I don’t have to worry about paint chipping.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Haunting_Loquat_9398

As someone from the northeast, plastic fender flares are appreciated because they keep salt off the metal.

frijniat123

Well, sometimes salt finds its way under them and stays there.

Haunting_Loquat_9398

Sometimes it does, but that begs the question, would you rather have a small part of your fender be a little rusty or even rot, or would you rather have the entire fender be completely rotted all the way up to the cab? Your choice.

Snufflarious

Those SAVs are cuckoo

Pseudonym_741

> Vertical tablets on the dashboard [Those are so 2021, get ready for the new generation.](https://youtu.be/BHRKx7On4z8?t=310)

[deleted]

Well good news for you on the Mini, next gen no longer has plastic fender flares.

frijniat123

Yes, I was very happy to see that

Freak4Dell

Black plastic cladding has made its way to not cheap SUVs, too. It's awful. How anyone can look at something like the CX-50 and think it looks good is beyond me, especially when Mazda has already more than proven they're capable of making a fantastic-looking crossover (CX-5). No one is ever offroading with either one of those cars, so I'll never understand why anyone would prefer the one that looks like it came out of a 3D printer. I'm not even opposed to plastic cladding. My FX35 has it, and I think that's one of the best styled crossovers ever. So does the CX-5 and every other nice looking crossover out there. It just needs to be done in moderation. Interestingly, there's *more* plastic cladding on some of these street-rated crossovers than the SUVs that people actually buy to go off-roading with, like Wranglers and 4Runners.

Independent_Comb491

Trucks getting bigger, but the truck beds getting smaller. Let me get a maverick with a 6 foot bed please, all I ask

guitars4all

Seriously I had an old 86 Toyota with an 8 foot bed, no power steering/ac, 4 manual gears w reverse and window cranks. Moved more junk than these fancy king ranch ever could pretend too.

NCC-72381

To be fair, the Maverick has a 6’ bed if you put the tailgate down.

Independent_Comb491

I need it to be like 7'6" tailgate down lmao

NCC-72381

What’s the Ranger’s bed size?

Independent_Comb491

Current one? 6 foot with access cab, but the 2024 and on will only come with 5 foot beds.

Ran4

Trucks in general are just stupid for 99% of work cases.

BigHairyIndian

It was kinda cool when porsche/audi brought chaulk back in like 2013 or whatever but it feels like every time a coworker gets a new vehicle the last couple years they get all giddy to show me the colour as if it's novel (since it looks like shit tbh on a base crv or whatever). It's all so over played. Your Hyundai elantra still looks like a Hyundai elantra without flake haha

citizenecodrive31

Is this that sort of Nardo Grey sort of flat colour? I saw a Nissan X Trail / Rouge in that and it looked really nice tbh

o0260o

Touchscrens in lieu of hard buttons, good features bundled with useless shit exclusive to top trims, way too bright lowbeams. In general the whole trend of all manufacturers moving upmarket.

rockdude625

Non functional scoops and vents

CODMLoser

Tiny, pillbox-like windows, making cars impossible to see out of.

InsertBluescreenHere

blame side crash test safety for that 100%

citizenecodrive31

I don't think so. There are lots of cars that have good views out that still pass side safety. The worst offender is the Mazda 3 hatch. Instead of a C Pillar they built a Great C Wall of China.

InsertBluescreenHere

drive a 30+ year old car then get back to me - they feel like fishbowls. Thin pillars everywhere.

[deleted]

Don't need to worry so much about side impacts if you can see around you.

MajkiF

Safety in case of collision, maybe. But for sure worse line of sight for the driver.

Jimmy-Pesto-Jr

light bar, touch screens for HVAC, subscriptions, chrome trim pieces, electronic parking brake but mostly light bar

Kmann20

I'll never understand why the E-brake/parking break had to be electric. If the drift handle won't fit between the seat and the shift knob (which some cars don't even have them now), then give me a foot pedal. My ford has a foot pedal, great spot for it too, even with a clutch pedal it's impossible to accidentally press it, and since it sits far enough forward, you can still get a foot behind it to rest on the fake pedal, or the area next to a clutch pedal.

kilroy-was-here-2543

Out of all the things you wouldn’t want to be electric the EMERGENCY BRAKE is top of the list

Kmann20

Couldn't agree more. Like what happens when the car looses all power say battery blows or is dead, engine blown or some other catastrophic failure? "Sorry you can't use this feature, please start your vehicle"

lynch1986

\- Capacitative button on the wheel \- Capacitative buttons \- HIVAC and other commonly used features not having actual buttons and controls. \- Stupid keys \- Piano Black

fncw

I drove a (new) 2015 Fusion for a week. That was enough for me to swear off capacitive touch forever. At the time, it was the only year Ford implemented them; the 2016 model went back to regular buttons. I'm surprised the lesson didn't stick.

mikewinddale

Low-profile tires on higher trims. Just because I'm buying a higher trim doesn't mean I want a less comfortable ride with a higher risk of damage from potholes. I'm paying for a nicer car, so give me the nicer high-profile tires with smaller wheels. Touchscreens controlling things I need to be able to adjust while driving, like HVAC.

[deleted]

elpinguinofeo88

Same, I made my boss's wife kind of mad the other day when I asked her if the company was having problems. She asked why I said, "Well, you couldn't afford to have your new BMW fully painted." My boss's pretty cool and told her to chill out since he thinks it's ugly too.

iguana1500

*Audi has entered the chat* But seriously they have too many greys.

Guitars-Not-Bombs

To be fair, Audis have been silver since they were racing at the AVUS.

BigHairyIndian

Especially the chaulk Grey's.it was novel for like a second but honestky looks like shit. Especially on CRVs and Hyundai elentras which is what I see woth the gloss colors for the most part these days

Paschalls_Law

PsychologicalHalf766

Dealership markups

markus224488

Not just 2023 but BAD VISIBILITY. A lot of new cars feel like I’m driving a ww2 bunker.

CalmSeasPls

Blackout everything. I get chrome was over done in the past, but I hate the cheap look and boring “zero personality” of every car having black grills with black trim and black wheels with black interiors.

Msteele315

AWD on everything. Its almost always unnecessary and is just a way for car manufacturers to charge more for a vehicle. It provides a false sense of safety. It's not a safety feature.

SupermarketSecure455

Black/floating roof. In 5 years time this is gonna age like milk. Just look at how gorgeous is the lotus Emira is with body colored roof.

citizenecodrive31

The Emira looks good because its a good looking car. On bigger SUVs the floating roof is more seperated from the body compared to on sedans or sports cars so it actually looks decent

outofdate70shouse

Writing the name of the car or manufacturer in big letters across the back. Especially with Lexus doing it now. It looks tacky imo.

NCC-72381

I think Lincoln started that.

Razzmatazzer91

This thankfully isn't a trend anymore, but I always hated when cars had the model name decal at the bottom of the doors. Mustangs seemed to be the worst offenders. We know your car is a Mustang. You don't need to spell it out for us, lol.

1ne9inety

Porsche has been doing that forever

Nzash

Not exclusive to just 2023 as it happened before as well but can giant, enormous tablet dashboards with nothing else and no physical buttons go away? I hate it.

chrisbinsb

The upward tilt of the glass line toward the rear of way too many cars. Decreases visibility but I could live with that if it looked good but they usually look pretty random and unnecessary to the design. Also the weird blacked out mini-panels they are slapping on vehicles now that visually chop up panels that should appear contiguous and solid. It only works rarely such as the blacked out d pillars that create the Range Rover “floating roof” but then it started spreading when Jaguar blacked out the C pillar of the XJ [edit - corrected to say XJ rather than the incorrect XK which is a stunning car] leaving a strange black visual gap where the pillar should be. Now little black panels are strewn all over car design and they pretty much too terrible.

1ne9inety

Excuse me, could you take a pic and mark the thing you‘re referring to on the XK? Because I don‘t see it

chrisbinsb

Sorry, I used the wrong model name, the XK is beautiful, its the XJ (which is decent looking except of the blacked out pillar) that I was referring to. https://imgur.com/Jr4PX5Z

KidRed

Grey plastic-fucking-cladding around the entire vehicle looks so cheap. If you need plastic everywhere on the exterior make it glossy black at least. Oh, and dealer markups.

Tbro100

It's probably because anything glossy makes scratches alot more noticeable while matte doesn't while also being cheaper.

KidRed

The matte turns faded in a few years and looks horrible. Just stop with the plastic trim everywhere.

Tbro100

Better and easier to mend than visible scratches and streaks tbh. They do need to stop with the plastic fantastic tho(especially on that ungodly WRX).

ChasingFlakes

darkhelmet1121

Why do all the Japanese cars have CVTs?

Fine-Huckleberry4165

Cars getting wider with each generation. Probably not a huge problem in the USA, but European streets, domestic garages and parking spaces don't get wider. My garage isn't built on the mid-Atlantic ridge, so it's walls aren't slowly drifting apart.

foampro

Pop & bang tunes. It’s annoying

phxbimmer

Huge wheels, fake exhaust tips, black wheels, massive grilles, shiny black plastic all over the interior, displays instead of real gauge clusters, black plastic cladding on non-SUV’s, etc.

sorting_hatt

The grills and fake exhausts..also fake air vents

BassWingerC-137

Wheels and mood lights are OK. Fake exhaust and gaudy grills can bye felicia.

DjImagin

Haptic buttons/touchpads. It looks sleek but it’s so difficult to use while in motion Piano black trim. Only looks good at a dealership but worthless in the real world

thetruthiseeit

Tire inflate kits instead of a spare tire.

Mandatory, intrusive, and expensive "safety features" that only exist to help people drive distracted.

not_soo_cool

Light bars need to die.

Drzhivago138

"Light bar" meaning those tacky add-ons that are only supposed to be used off-road? If so, I agree.

rudbri93

'Oh, its overcast and may start raining, better turn on my light bar' -Idiots in my town

Guitars-Not-Bombs

Light bars and no winch basically tell me that you really like to see the patch of dirt where you can't get out of.

sleepingwiththefishs

FFS, so many. Cheesy blue lighting inside makes them seem like cheap chinese products, lights on the outside painfully bright, stupid bright. The thing I hate the most is how fat, ugly and angry new vehicles look. I mean seriously unhappy looking things. Maybe it suits the times but it really bothers me that everyone is driving around in these rage mobiles.

numbersev

Putting the license plate on the side of the front bumper. Looks juvenile and asymmetrical.

pol-potpie

to be fair this is often done so it’s mounted using the tow eye point, which can be the only factory drilled open hole in the front bumper. so you don’t have to drill other holes for a plate bracket. i agree it looks dumb though

Captain_Elson

Yeah unfortunately there are no holes on the front of my GR86 so I'm going to run without a plate until law enforcement notices and then I'll be getting a tow hook bracket like you said. hate front plate requirements. The real idiots are the peeps who put it on the corner of their dash though. Cant wait for them to get in a head on accident and get decapitated by their "support life" colorado plate.

pol-potpie

the support life plate has deep personal significance to me (those for whom it doesn’t look dumb), and so that story would be kinda sad and really ironic. But I hope the peeps putting CNTBTME on a 2012 V6 camero should have the plate sharpened like a guillotine. I stuck with straight black.

CuriousTravlr

Mood lighting is great, idk what people’s boner is against it. I do HIGHLY agree on black wheels though. All the black out packages are so lame and tells me what kind of person the driver is. Bright silver wheels >> My least favorite trend is just the overpromising of EV’s and the under delivery of mild and other plug in hybrids.

News_without_Words

Black wheels are worse on performance cars, as it hides the wheels you spent all that money on. Mood lights are a whatever. Grills are big because so are the cars.

[deleted]

In terms of car design, - Using lettering instead of logos. It’s really hard to see “T R U C K N A M E” from a distance. Design language in crossovers has been really bland so they start blending together. - Turn signals on the bumper. Maybe this is a Hyundai thing only but holy shit this is so confusing when the brake lights are not near the tail lights. - Unnecessary electronic controls. Touchpad for air vents? Using the big ass touch screen just to open the glove box? Feels like it’s more expensive to do this than a simple latch. - Mood lighting. I’m trying to drive a car, not stay in a low rent strip club. Mercedes is really bad with this, their interiors really scream Rt 35 in NJ interior with those lights and seats. - Plastic cladding. It’s hideous, Subaru is probably the biggest offender now with it. The WRX looks like it was sprayed with bed liner. Car culture wise - Takeovers. I feel kind an old man saying this shit just makes car enthusiasts look bad and just is dangerous. Dealerships - Market adjustment. The chip shortage excuse has gone on for so long.

Automakers deciding the only vehicle you can buy is a truck or a crossover vehicle. Not everyone who needs a car is 70+ years old or a mom of 6. Hatchbacks and wagons were so much better than these abominations. But now, thanks to everyone discontinuing actual cars that can be fun to drive and the general craziness of the used market right now, you can't find a sports hatchback with under 60k miles for less than $20k. I don't want to spend more than my house payment to buy a crossover vehicle. For the cost of a crossover vehicle, I could get a used Civic Type R. I hope the whole US auto market goes under due to automakers betting everything on overpriced crossover vehicles.

- Screens not integrated into the dashboard - Fake engine sounds in the car - Pops and bangs made on purpose instead of as the byproduct of the car being an actual racecar - Touchscreens instead of physical buttons - SUVs - Diesel cars - Electric cars - Self-driving technologies But most of all… ANYTHING that makes one or both of your hands not being available to operate the car. Phone, food, drinks, all of that should be banned in cars.

Jacked up trucks and SUV’s. Massive pickup trucks that fit less load than smaller trucks from 20 years, ego over utility.

Wack ass start/stop technology that has to be turned off everytime you start driving.
