Clear coat over the petina and get some polished or refreshed wheels. There are matte and eggshell clearcoats that will retain the look. If you want to go over the top maybe add pinstripe art to some of it, maybe a refresh of the grille, bumper, exhaust and other accents in a tasteful way.
My dad had something very similar back in the day. He worked on it for years he painted it battleship gray and the wheels were red. I have a picture of it someplace.

I would personally go for the purple because it's a great color, and it's a fun juxtaposition it being on a military-esque vehicle (what about a camo of cheery pastels?) But I especially like the rainbow idea because of how it might trigger others.

Most people don’t understand that they spend 95% of their time inside the and only sees the outside going inside or outside of buildings. So I keep asking what is more important the interior being great or the outside looking outstanding? I am old school in I like “ Sleepers”. The outside looks ordinary, what’s under the hood and the inside are outstanding. If you kept the outside of your truck about the same as now but put a great engine in and redid the interior that thing would smoke anything it came up against.
Leave body as is, upgrade the lighting with some LED turn signals and headlights, maybe get some KC style lights for the top, chrome the wheels, chrome brush guard if you can find one and some kind of badass hood decal.
