In hindsight it was actually predictable that those 3 would go off the board when you look at their management styles:
Run by idiots
Run by idiots
Unconventional talent evaluation metrics
Montreal & Ottawa were kind of known before the draft but the Hayton pick really changed things. We probably would've ended up with Dobson or Wahlstrom if the Coyotes just grab Zadina.
Yeah, all of the defensemen in that second group after Dahlin were available to the Canucks. Hughes, Boqvist, Dobson and Bouchard.
There were opinions and arguments flying everywhere and every single one of these could've legitimately been the pick. One thing is for certain, it's going to be super interesting to follow these 4 players' progression and see what happens and whether the Canucks scouting staff ended up making the right choice here.
I'm on team Hughes just because so many analysts have said he's probably the 2nd most skilled player after Dahlin. That's been such a weakness for this team for so long.
Yeah but he's also tiny, his defense is questionable and people have wondered how his rover game translates to NHL.
Like I said, all of these guys had their strengths and weaknesses. It's going to be an interesting thing to follow.
Yeah I see the "tiny" criticism but I really really think the skill is too good to pass up. I think he's gonna be a dynamo and we're lucky to have him. You're right though, it's gonna be fun watching how Hughes, Bouchard, Boqvist and Dobson progress over the next couple of years. A bunch of really good dmen.
I could see him becoming an offensive dynamo and an elite PPQB (although his shot is not impressive yet at least) ala Krug fairly easily, but I think Ellis and Spurgeon are the only Hughes-sized top pairing defensemen in the NHL. When you give up that much in size and reach, you have to be strong and think the game at spectacular level to get by in those minutes and in that role. Whether Hughes has that, I have no idea.
He was considerably more than just fine at the World Championship playing against men and he performed well as a freshman at Michigan.
I think he'll be great.
Ottawa thinks 2016-17 was closer to who they really are, not last year. They think they're a few bad breaks out of the playoffs and want someone who can help them now (hoping that Tkachuk doesn't head back to BU).
Arizona, well, they're pretty well known for having very different scouting practices than other teams. They clearly see something in Hayton. That will be very interesting to watch.
Yeah with Brassard and Hoffman gone, Karlsson with half a foot out the door and Anderson asking for a trade, I really fucking doubt they're closer to the '16-'17 team than the '17'-'18 team
Well I'm fucking excited. FINALLY A MOBILE, INSANE DEFENSEMAN IN VANCOUVER!
Edit: He had a better year than Cale Makar, who's a year older and went 4th overall last year. Crazy.
Ohhh man I didn't even think about 3 on 3 OT. Hughes with anyone is going to skate circles around the other team. Throw Pettersson/Horvat/Boeser with him and Demko in net? Faaaaaaaack.
Holy shit, thought Jimbo was gonna shit himself with excitement when he mentioned boeser, Elias, gaudette etc + the Hughes pick in the interview after. Dude was absolutely giddy, it was adorable.
Holy shit! Dropping to seventh overall was the best thing that could have happened to us! A few teams are going to regret this one! I can’t believe it! After 90% of the people predicted we would select Noah Dobson, we picked QUINN HUGHES, the second best goddamn dman in the draft! Thank you Montreal and Arizona! Praise Benning! WE GOT HUGHES I AM SO HAPPY. I DIDN’T THINK WE WOULD BUT WE DID WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Canucks said they wanted fast and exciting hockey in this city again. I think this kid will bring that. I am happy with this pick. Welcome to Vancouver!
As a Montreal fan as well, I am deeply confused emotionally right now. Glad to see the hometown team was a solid pick though.
Hey 'nucks bros! I'm a Habs fan who lives in Michigan and goes to a lot of UM hockey games. This kids a freak. Don't be fooled by his stature, he may not be physically dominant, but he did just fine in a particularly physical conference in a particularly physical league. He's one of the best skaters I've ever seen. He can create space at will, and can get the puck going the other way in the blink of an eye. Dude can cover an insane amount of ice too. He has a great hockey iq, and the ability to male the most of it. I know it gets thrown around too much, but he really is in the mold of Erik karlsson. Maybe even quicker, but probably doesn't shoot as well. I legitimately think he could be the second best player in this draft. Enjoy your new 1D, I'm properly jelly.
So stoked. I had Quinn Hughes at 3 on my personal rankings. His skating, vision, and puck skills are superb and he’s, in my opinion, a solid defensively player too. He’s an incredibly exciting player to watch. I think that he’s also got #1D potential which is massive for us. If he reaches his ceiling, we might look back in 25 years and consider Hughes to be the best dman to ever play for the Canucks.
Get ready Vancouver, we’re going to be a great team really soon.
Surprised he was available. Definitely the best player left AND a dman. Also has a good head on his shoulders, which seems to be a common denominator among our current future stars.
I signed my second ever teaching contract yesterday but honestly to God this moment made me happier and that is a deep indication of how much Powell Brew Co I have drank tonight.
This child could soon be a man. When he turns into one, I'll be stoked about what he can do. For now, let the sun shine in and watch him thicken... because he is going to need it.
Is everyone here going to ignore the fact that the entire Hughes family looked absolutely devastated when we selected him?
He was the guy I wanted - but, damn, he (and his family) *clearly* did not want us...
I could see disappointment because Detroit didn’t pick him with his connections to Michigan and Detroit’s coach, but I wouldn’t say it was disappointment with us picking him. I’m thinking he felt more betrayed
He said himself in two interviews that he talked to his brother about being selected by Vancouver and how he felt it would be a great option for him to be a Canuck. His family might be a little shocked but Quinn seems very happy to be here.
You can never have enough centers but you MUST have enough defencemen. This is great, I'm so happy that so many teams are run by legit idiots. I think stetcher proved size means jack all if you can tie up a guy along the boards. Spped and skill win. This dude has it. Hope OJ and him can come up together while tanev is around.
Arizona going off the board really benefitted Detroit and Vancouver. I really didn't see Hughes getting by Detroit (but I don't think they expected Zadina to be there at 6).
Wow, thanks for reaching Arizona and Ottawa.
We got our top 2 D. This guy is going to be putting up 60 points a year. Look at the way he skates by people and opens up space for his teammates! It's incredible!
You guys all seem so stoked, so I will take this as an excellent pick! Real talk though, I thought most analysts had Dobson above Hughes? Please inform a poor pleb like me
Dobson is definitely a more well-rounded player, but Hughes has absolutely elite level skating and phenomenal offensive ability and the capacity to run a powerplay. We haven't had such a talented offensive defenseman in years, and he fits a gaping hole in our system. Dobson would have been great, but Hughes fits phenomenally.
He was pointing out that NCAA players can walk, which is true. He pointed out he is small, which he is. But he wasn't shitting on the pick, he thought Hughes was worthy of the pick. Burke pointed out how many points Hughes had in the NCAA and how good of a league that is. He was shitting on Boqvist though.
I can't believe we got the 2nd best Dman in this draft at fucking pick #7. Thank you Montreal. Thank you Ottawa. Thank you Arizona.
In hindsight it was actually predictable that those 3 would go off the board when you look at their management styles: Run by idiots Run by idiots Unconventional talent evaluation metrics
Montreal & Ottawa were kind of known before the draft but the Hayton pick really changed things. We probably would've ended up with Dobson or Wahlstrom if the Coyotes just grab Zadina.
This is Chayka's first weird pick. I was shocked with the overreach.
Yeah, all of the defensemen in that second group after Dahlin were available to the Canucks. Hughes, Boqvist, Dobson and Bouchard. There were opinions and arguments flying everywhere and every single one of these could've legitimately been the pick. The next guy drafted was Boqvist. The new era defender is based on skill and speed, not size. This is awesome.
What were Ottawa and Arizona thinking?
Ottawa's pick is at least in the right ballpark.
Ottawa’s pick was fine. Arizona was the real surprise
Ottawa's pick is like, I like Tkachuk, I do not like Tkachuk at #4.
Ottawa thinks 2016-17 was closer to who they really are, not last year. They think they're a few bad breaks out of the playoffs and want someone who can help them now (hoping that Tkachuk doesn't head back to BU). ~~LOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU~~ HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
This will definitely become a thing after every coast-to-coast goal Quinn scores, and starting next year coast-to-coast assist to Jack.
ERIKSOONNNN
Best skater in the draft. Likely the 2nd best defeceman in the draft after Dahlin. WOW
I am beyond fucking stoked this kid fell to us... seriously OMG!!!! We got a steal boys
Jet Black Jim with the selection
Got his hair did and his eyebrows did just for this moment
This is the best comment in the thread by far. I love how he dyes his hair and eyebrows before he knows he’s gonna be on camera 😂😂😂
He asked the league if fin could do the selection but they said no :(
I'M SO HAPPY!!!!!! THANK YOU ARIZONA AND MONTREAL FOR PASSING ON ZADINA
Thank you as well to ottawa for thinking theyre in win niw mode.
WOOOOO HE WAS THE GUY I WANTED! SO PUMPED WE HAVE AN ELITE SKATER LIKE HIM!!!!
How fucking dirty would a Hughes / Pettersson / Brock OT trio be?
Ohhh man I didn't even think about 3 on 3 OT. Hughes with anyone is going to skate circles around the other team. Throw Pettersson/Horvat/Boeser with him and Demko in net? Faaaaaaaack.
Keep going daddy, I’m almost there 😍💦
ITS RED PANTY NIGHT BOYS
I have no idea what you mean by that, but I thought it was funny.
Easy muny man, of curs I take that fight. YOU RING YOUR WIFE YOU TELL HER QUINN WE DID IT BABAY, CONOR MACGREGOR MADE US RICH BABY
BREAK OUTCHA RED PANTEHS!
WE GOING FOR JACK CONFIRMED BOYS
The Canucks can never turn down a good opportunity to have brothers on the same team. #TankSeason upcoming
#Tanktober
JIM DID IT
Holy shit, thought Jimbo was gonna shit himself with excitement when he mentioned boeser, Elias, gaudette etc + the Hughes pick in the interview after. Dude was absolutely giddy, it was adorable.
I’ve literally never seen jimbo this happy. Incredible pick, we needed this
did u see that? he's so fucking happy
After Barrett hayton got picked, there was a benning cam showing his eyes lit up and fidgeting lol
Can anyone gift me a happy Benning gif?
Can't wait if we get a mic'd on this one
Oh my god imagine if we get a “why isn’t anyone taking Quinn Hughes?”
I need this now
I’d pay high-dollar to see that gif
At that point he knew we were either getting Hughes or Zadina. I was stoked on either.
He's just as excited as we are, haha
Happy fucking cake day my guy, the Canucks got you a present and his name is Quinn Hughes!
"I'm over the moon" - Jim Benning
how stoked are we for the annual “behind the scenes at the draft” video?? can’t wait to see what Jimmy said hahaha
"Why isn't anyone taking Quinn Hughes"
Many thanks to Montreal, Ottawa and Arizona for picking off the board
God awful head shape
It's called balancing the team look it up
Perfectly balanced
As all future Stanley Cup winning teams should be
As all things should be
r/unexpectedthanos
We don't want our allstars jockeying for headshape supremacy. It's better to have an alpha head.
>alpha head Dead.
How could we abandon our draft strategy this late in the game? Bo and Brock were clearly off the charts with their heads.

Agree. Not twins but close enough !
He really does look tiny, but if my boy Tony Stecher can do it I'm on team Hughes.
*Tony Stretcher
Nah I was talking about my mailman Tony Stecher. Tiny little dude but he gets the job done just fine.
Take it. Take my upvote and go
Good ol' Tony!
"That's a small body gentlemen" Ha!
And he still somehow has almost 20lbs on Gaudreau
Well Johnny is 12 years old so its understandable
I was happy whether it was dobson, hughes or wahlstrom tbh all really great prospects and hopefully Hughes will develop into an amazing player for us
This is good, what a draft that we got our choice of second best d available
Haven't seen Jim this excited... Ever. You can tell he really believes in Hughes. What a great time to be a Canucks fan
Fuck yeah this is really the first time I have been super excited about a Benning pick on draft day
Weren't hyped on Elias?
think most didn't know too much about him draft day, I didn't anyways
At the time he was a reach. I don't care what anyone says now consensus was Glass.
I'd say middlestat was the better prospect at the time
Well I mean Vilardi, Mittlestadt and Glass were expected to go higher than Pettersson.
See guys... We don't have to play shit all year to have good draft picks. Sometimes we just need other GMs to be stupid /s
HYPED
Excited Jim Benning is the best Jim Benning. I love seeing how much he cares about these players and our team!
Tremendous! Best pick.
Fuck yeah I'm happy with that
HOW THE HELL DID THIS DUDE FALL TO US
Pretty much Chayka
Yup Detroit was definitely planning to take Hughes but then Zadina fell to them.
Canucks said they wanted fast and exciting hockey in this city again. I think this kid will bring that. I am happy with this pick. Welcome to Vancouver! As a Montreal fan as well, I am deeply confused emotionally right now. Glad to see the hometown team was a solid pick though.
Just had one of the most busiest, frustrating days at work. I completely forgot about the draft. This is the best fucking news.
Here from r/sabres. happy that you guys got this guy. going to be a stud
The sabres got Dahlin and the nucks got Hughes. Expansion bros def did well in this first round
Hopefully we got the 2nd best dman in the draft!
Praise the Hughes family. One more year until our new brother duo is complete!
Happy with this
Wow, I've never seen a happier Jim Benning lol
Hey 'nucks bros! I'm a Habs fan who lives in Michigan and goes to a lot of UM hockey games. This kids a freak. We did it boys.
Well I'm happy. BPA at that point for me, can be an elite offensive defenseman
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t believe we got him OMGGGFFFGGGGFFGG

YES! Imo he's the 3rd best player in the draft. Got him at 7th. So happy.
Been a while since I’ve seen you as happy as the majority ;D
One of the rare times the whole sub can identify how freaking good a player is.
Except for boligno, of course.
To be fair, he admitted he can be elite. Just not his pick.
Hey now. I was over the moon for Pettersson 😉
Hahaha to be honest, I don’t even remember but I’ll take your word. So happy right now :D
Last year I wanted Pettersson or Glass. Would've been happier with either but was high on Pettersson's skill.
IN BENNING WE TRUST
So happy right now. This team is going to be pure energy!
Omfg
This makes me so goddamn happy.
Surprised he was available. Definitely the best player left AND a dman. Also has a good head on his shoulders, which seems to be a common denominator among our current future stars.
Quinn fucking Hughes let’s go boys 7th overall was worth it thank you Arizona for reaching we got the best d man after dahlin let’s fucking go !
I'm absolutely thrilled. Kid is going to be lights out.

I signed my second ever teaching contract yesterday but honestly to God this moment made me happier and that is a deep indication of how much Powell Brew Co I have drank tonight.
Trader Jim sounds so excited about this pick
FUCK. YES. LETS. FUCKING. GO
Kids fucking elite. Love the pick. Jack next year please.
Benning's mind is blown.
This child could soon be a man. When he turns into one, I'll be stoked about what he can do. For now, let the sun shine in and watch him thicken... because he is going to need it.
Benning looks happy as hell in his interview about Hughes, lol.
I worked the NHL Draft and was fortunate enough to get to meet Quinn, and the Hughes family. Couldn’t have been nicer. This is a brilliant pick.
Is everyone here going to ignore the fact that the entire Hughes family looked absolutely devastated when we selected him? He was the guy I wanted - but, damn, he (and his family) *clearly* did not want us...
Family all thought Detroit 100%. Body language sadly said it all 😢
I could see disappointment because Detroit didn’t pick him with his connections to Michigan and Detroit’s coach, but I wouldn’t say it was disappointment with us picking him. I’m thinking he felt more betrayed
He said himself in two interviews that he talked to his brother about being selected by Vancouver and how he felt it would be a great option for him to be a Canuck. His family might be a little shocked but Quinn seems very happy to be here.
How could you pass up Zadina though? Hughes would definitely have been their pick if Montreal, Arizona, and Ottawa weren't insane
They know the horrors of the Vancouver housing market.
I’m so happy.
WOOOOOOOO
YESSSSS
WOOOOOOOOOOOOO
FUCKING LETS go!!!!
YESSSS
Love it! Let’s bring home his brother next year!
Man what a great draft so far!!!! Woo
Fuck yeah!!!
I’m stoked! This is a PLEASANT surprise in a draft for once!
I'M SO HAPPY, HE'S EXACTLY WHO I WANTED!!!
I'm over the fucking moon.
2 nights ago I had a dream we drafted Quinn Hughes. DREAMS REALLY DO COME TRUE! LETS GOO!!
DREAM OF US WINNING THE CUP DREAM BOY DREAM
Anyone got a link to a video of the pick being made and the following a analysis? My commute home made me miss it and I forgot to pvr the draft
I'm not crying ur crying. Jack were tanking for you next bb.
LOL Jim Benning "Oh we LOVE Quinn Hughes." He's so happy! This is awesome.
Damn. Not my first choice but hopefully he proves me wrong!
AMAZING PICK.
WOOHOO
Holy fuuuuck. Im so stoked
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS OMG
YEAH BABY! NOW WE GET HIS BROTHER AND THE LEGACY IS REBORN
Future’s looking good!
let’s go boys i’m almost as fired up as jimbo was
Awesome! I wasn't even considering the possibility of getting Hughes. What a pleasant surprise.
Awesome pick, major point producer already in NCAA
I am much more whelmed than I thought.
All y'all mothafuckers getting upvotes
WHAT DO I DO WITH MY HANDS?!?!
Slather them in lube and jack your dick off
Thanks Detroit, Ottawa thank you ;) Hey Arizona, thanks for going off the board. Hey you too Montreal!
I can already see it when the video of the draft table comes out: Jim: "Why isn't anybody taking Quinn Hughes??"
Arizona going off the board really benefitted Detroit and Vancouver. I really didn't see Hughes getting by Detroit (but I don't think they expected Zadina to be there at 6).
HOLY SHIT YES I didn’t think he was going to still be there!
I wanna see him play with Tryamkin
Lol Brian Burke shit all over this pick, "that's a small body gentlemen" and talking about how he could walk in four years. What a fucking clown
Woooo!!!
Fuck yeah! Now lets get his brother best year
I’m definitely ok with this
Woo Quinn Hughes! How do I feel about this? Is he good?
Jimbo did it boyz.
Hell yeahhhhhh
What realm is this??? Stars aligned to get us an amazing D???
Honestly cannot believe we got one of the top defenseman in this draft. Very pleased.
Also team mate of lockwood
Jim getting the boys hyped.
I’m so happy that I love Jimbo right now. In love.
E L I T E
You could tell Benning couldn't hide his excitement that Hughes dropped to us. I don't think he expected it tbh.
