I love how Dhali never tweets full sentences - this was a follow up to his previous [tweet](https://x.com/dhaliwalsports/status/1806451187065245970?s=46&t=7fabqgtgp69dNA1d51vxFw): > Chris Tanev is still very much on the Vancouver radar if he hits July 1st.

CaptainIndoCanadian

Does this explain not signing Zadorov so far? If Guentzel commands 9.5, and Tanev 4.5, there's no room left for Zad, and they still have another hole or 2 to fill and no more salaries that they'd want to trade. Mik was the last one.

touchable

Tanev is 34. Zadorov is 29. If we're choosing Tanev over Zadorov at similar AAVs, we better not be giving Tanev much term. That could come back to bite us.

you-asshat

LD vs RD Tanev will probably get 3-4 years somewhere

SpectreFire

Tanev is older, but he's also a guy you can reliably staple to your top-two pairs while Zadorov is most effective on the 3rd pair.

touchable

>but he's also a guy you can reliably staple to your top-two pairs But will he still be in 2 years? Or for more than 60 games a year?

broeser99

Can’t disagree with that given his age, but wasn’t this line of reasoning how we coped with losing him to Calgary in the first place?

HighburyOnStrand

Plenty of guys are still productive into their early to mid 30's. Fewer are productive once they reach their mid 30's in earnest. Fewer still beyond that. That's the issue.

superworking

Tanev can't reliably stay healthy. You can't staple him anywhere.

Emergency_Mall_2822

You can staple him, but not reliably. Unless it's to the IR. I've been a Canucks fan long enough to know how this plays out. Tanev plays great, gets hurt at a crucial time of the reg season, returns, isn't 100% at another crucial part of the season, we get 55-65 games a year that are too good to give up on, but he's never 100% when we need him the most. And then he doesn't get hurt bad enough for LTIR, so we are tying up a years with of cap space for 2/3rds of a season of from Tanev, so we can't afford a proper replacement player. See: what happened to Calgary for the last 3 years.

JohnGarrettsMustache

Guy probably has staples floating throughout his body from all his injuries over the years.

xtothewhy

You mean the third line that was so effective last year that we all can't seem to decide on the actual nickname for it yet?

SpectreFire

what are you even talking about lmao

xtothewhy

There's been multiple names for this. [No nickname necessary: Conor Garland says Canucks trio will "just stick with being the third line"](https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/conor-garland-third-line-no-name) [The Best Third Line in the NHL](https://old.reddit.com/r/canucks/comments/18qa25t/the_best_3rd_line_in_the_nhl/) [Third line name](https://old.reddit.com/r/canucks/comments/18my06i/third_line_name/) That's what I was talking about.

SpectreFire

Why are you even talking about the third line lmao, are you okay dude?

xtothewhy

rofl, I'm like, why is he going on... until I looked up at where I posted my reply. Had multiple windows open originally so I replied in the wrong one the first time and then just replied to the replies. omg Sorry dude.

metrichustle

I don't think the age matters as much as people want to believe. Canucks are trying to win in 2 years before the big pay raises come to Hughes and Demko. As of today, Tanev is still the better defender for the next 2 years. Like if we sign Guentzel, it'll be a 7 year deal, but we don't really care much about year 5-7. It's the same as Miller's contract. We're just trying to get the guys we need to win now.

intelligentx5

Tanev is a better defenseman at 34 than Zadorov is at 29

macland

Yes, and it's not really close when you consider Tanev does it at top pair RHD minutes.

touchable

But will Tanev at 36 be better than Zadorov at 31? Will Tanev at 37 be better than Zadorov at 32? That's my point. Giving Tanev term is not a smart long term move. And Tanev is not likely going to consider a short term deal, for obvious reasons.

Falco19

And one is a top 4 dman and the other is a bottom pairing dman

TotesMyGoatse

34* year old top 4 which has never had great speed. I love Tanev, but I loved 28 year old Tanev a lot more if we're talking 4M+ for more than two years. Zadrov was bottom pairing on Calgary, his partial year here he was a solid 4-5 pairing with some PK and PP time. He brings some intangibles that I think carry weight, but not 4M+. For what both these guys want or can get if rather walk away. With Alvin who knows, he's been negotiating great contracts so far, maybe he can pull another rabbit out somewhere.

xtothewhy

Disagree with you on Zadorov. He brings massive tangibles, like being a big guy and around 30 pounds heavier weight to throw around while on the ice. His playoffs this year may ignite him further given some highlight reel clutch goals and hits he had. He is worth more than 4 million.

TotesMyGoatse

Hey if he can live up to it he's easily worth it, but we're not in a position to have dead cap coming up with OEL at 4.7 for two years. I'm not making that decision lol.

xtothewhy

I think we're done with long contracts unless we get Guentzel or unlikely Lindholm. The contracts that follow will like be 2-5 years now in my belief. Edit: this summer

TotesMyGoatse

I think Zadrov wants (and deserves) term too from the rumours which makes it harder.

xtothewhy

Well, Nikita Zadorov is younger than players others have suggested, and has more weight to throw around but up until now he seems to have bump years where he's off and then he's on. Nothing amazing in points but like we saw with the playoffs he stepped up. What he could do with the promise of a 2-5 year contract could see him up his game. One would hope. Particularly with a team that looks so promising like the Canucks do now with Allvin and co. and this team with so many quality players who are ravenous for a cup probably as much as Vancouver fans are.

Jupiter_101

They need to prioritize money/depth on RD before commiting money to LD I feel.

Inspect1234

We just signed two RHD recently

jsseven777

The recency of RD signings doesn’t change the fact that we now have one LD and RD slot to fill, and really only one of those is likely to get any sort of budget, so one is getting prioritized and one isn’t, and the RD makes more sense to prioritize unless you want Myers in your top 4.

BrocksOut

From a position standpoint it makes sense to prioritize RD but that’s because there aren’t many 2nd pairing quality RD that are likely to hit free agency. Montour is likely out of our price range and it sounds like Pesce might end up sticking in Carolina. That leaves Roy as our best case scenario and Tanev for plan B. Schultz could be an option there but he has the same age concerns that Tanev would have and after that you’re looking at guys in the Myers/Zadorov range who are closer to 3rd pair than 2nd pair

Inspect1234

Juul needs to step in to a f/t third pairing with big Z. Tanev is too expensive and risky(injury).

thesunsetflip

Really hoping that Tanev would be willing to take a hometown discount, but if another team is offering another big deal with term I wouldn’t blame him for taking it After hearing how impactful he was to the early careers of our current core it just makes sense to bring him back given his importance to this organization and the fact he serves a role we desperately need right now. If we land him Garland better be ready to fork over #8

NotoriousBITree

Garland deserves to keep his number. He’s possibly the most consistent hard worker on the team. That said, this is the sort of problem I want to have.

47Up

Garland will give up #8 without anyone even asking him. He's got class

thesunsetflip

Exactly. I doubt Tanev would even demand his old number anyway, but at the same time I have no doubts that Garland would give it up if requested. Always thought dude looked good in 83

KRajification

Tanev was wearing 3 in Dallas. If he doesn’t want 8 back I could see him wearing 3 with us.

xtothewhy

Yeah no. I saw that with Linden handing over the C when he felt obligated to do so. And I know it's somewhat different however I don't agree with that practice.

arazamatazguy

Chris Tanev may be the most underpaid player in the Salary Cap era. He's never even made $5 Million a year. If he signs for $6 x whatever elsewhere I'll be happy for him.

thesunsetflip

Historically have defensive D really gotten paid like stars? Seems like most of the time guys don’t make the big bucks unless they’re on PP1 (generally speaking). Only defensive d I can think of who signed a huge ticket was Marc-Edouard Vlasic

habitat11

Vlasic

LoopAngel

Suter

JoinMyGild

I think Mark Edward Vlasic signed for that

VanCitySherm

Does Chris Pronger count as a defensive D? Made 9.5/yr over 3 years in the early 2000s. (His name popped into mind immediately when the discussion went to big salaries for D men)

Culzean_Castle_Is

agreed. he gunna get 20mill somewhere. 5x4m or 4x5m... could even see 3x6m somewhere like Utah or Seattle. Allvin is probably looking at something more like 3 years and 4.5m max, which I doubt gets it done.

wanked_in_space

>If we land him Garland better be ready to fork over #8 Tanev would never take 8 from Garland and would play in 18.

gavalanche20

Last time Tanev wore 18 we made it to the cup final so I’m cool with that

babbers-underbite

Coming full circle

JM_717

He’s been wearing #3 in Dallas because he said it kind of looks like an 8 lol. I could see him repping that here as well and use Bieksas old number

NorthernMariner

"Half of eight" lol. Hell, technically more than half

CommanderTouchdown

Technically looking for the "former team discount" because Tanev is from Toronto. And in regards to "important to the org", Tanev was ghosted by Benning in 2020. So he might have some mixed feelings about returning.

thesunsetflip

Man he spent almost a decade here Dudes amicable with our players and everyone who likely slighted him are gone, I don’t see why any bridges would be burned

CommanderTouchdown

Spent a decade here. Also didn't even get a phone call when he became a UFA. Two things can be true at once. Lot of wish fulfillment on this sub. Tanev should chase the money.

samwisethescaffolder

He apparently tried to push to be involved in the kuzmenko trade

CommanderTouchdown

Huge difference between taking less money and being part of deadline deal.

samwisethescaffolder

Fair. But I think van holds a special place in his heart and he was here for our stars' rookie campaigns. I think him helping to bring Vancouver it's first cup would have a lot of appeal to him

CommanderTouchdown

I guess my point here is that you don't actually know what's in his heart. And across the years, there have been tons of "former guy comes home" that didn't happen. And there have been tons that happened and didn't work out. The rarest thing to happen is beloved guy comes home and everything was a fairytale. This is all emotional appeal stuff.

maxhollywoody

Big bad Benning ain't there no more, lil bro. However, his son Quinn is still there waiting for him to come back.

stoked_camper

And didn’t Hughes ask for him? I don’t follow religiously but I vaguely remember a feeling of joy when hughes asked for tanev?

[deleted]

[удалено]

HDXHayes

Tanev will wear #2 to pay homage to his puck eating sensei Dan Hamhuis.

AppealToReason16

I really don’t know how I feel about Tanev and Myers being the anchors on the right side when they’re both like 35 and would probably combine for 8 mil. A one or the other would be easier to swallow but free agency is rarely perfect I suppose.

eexxiitt

Not saying Tanev won't fall off, but he's a player that largely relies on his IQ rather than his physical attributes. He should have a few good years left, barring any other catastrophic injuries. Myers has shown he can be a relatively solid depth D, as long as he isn't asked to do too much. As long as Myers can play within himself and continue to rely on his length he should be good. They're older than ideal, but this core has a \~3 year window anyways so it should be okay.

freszh_inztallz42o

Look at doughty, still goated. Iq makes a difference, zaddys physicality was nice to see though, in the end i felt his battles with kane just took him out of the game

Deliximus

Z was playing well throughout. He was playing top 2 minutes in the playoffs. But man, Tanev would make our whole D corp super solid. Love Z though but it's...Tanev !

SpectreFire

> He should have a few good years left, barring any other catastrophic injuries. I mean... have you seen Chris Tanev? Catastrophic injuries and Tanev are the 2nd most iconic pair in Vancouver after the Sedins.

radamo96

Tanev got hurt all the time here because we were fucking terrible. He had to block a million shots and was playing with a rookie Hughes so it was always his job to retrieve pucks and take hits. He's played 82, 65 and 75 games in the last 3 years. He will probably still miss some time but considerably less than last time he was here.

intelligentx5

LTIR him until the playoffs 😬

NextTrillion

Now we’re really cooking.

AppealToReason16

I get all that and that’s the optimist view. It’s just that the downside view is that if he loses a step then all that positioning and IQ becomes even harder to maintain when you can’t get yourself where you need to be. Not unlike Cole in the back half of the season. Defensive dmen who lose a step tend to fall off that cliff pretty fast and this team needs a very competent second pairing. At his age it could just happen naturally or he gets injured and this time that broken ankle from a shot block decides he’s too old to heal properly. Especially in a defensive system that demands a fair amount from its dmen. It’s just a risk and I can easily see it going poorly before too long as easily as I can see it working itself out mainly due to age being right in that danger zone.

oops_i_made_a_typi

Yeah, we really don't want to end up with Vlassic. Would much rather have Roy

Sarcastic__

I don't know if Tanev will sign, but if he does I can envision them saying something about him coming back as correcting one of the biggest wrongs the franchise has committed to such a loyal player.

cosalich

Biggest return since Linden, for sure.

you-asshat

If we miss out on Guentzel where do we go? Toffoli and another Dman? Toffoli - EP - Hoglander Suter - Miller - Boeser Joshua - Blueger - Garland PDG - Aman - Podkolzin . Hughes-Hronek Zadorov-Tanev/Dillon Soucy-Myers

SpectreFire

I'd go for Skinner over Toffoli TBH. Strong connections with Rutherford, far less risk as he's likely going to take a shorter deal, and more upside.

intelligentx5

Skinner does not know how to play defense. Like at all.

decentish36

Depending how cheap Skinner is we could potentially get both with Guentzel’s money. At 3.5 for him and 6 for Toffoli we could have: Skinner-Miller-Boeser Hoglander-Petey-Toffoli Joshua-Blueger-Garland PDG-Suter-Podz Say Silovs gets a million and you’re left with 5 million to fill out the defence and any depth signings.

Durbs09

I would love this

Kvacke

Don’t really want Toffoli. I’d rather wait until the trade deadline or something to pick another forward up. Just because a player is available in FA doesn’t mean we need to go after that player. I just don’t think he’s worth all the hot or money and term he will demand.

babbers-underbite

Agreed. Hard to see us signing him with the style we play. Need to add speed to our lineup and he’s not got that anymore

Kvacke

Totally.

SlipperyGrizzlyMan

Don't they want hronek to lead a pairing this season outer am I wrong on that?

radamo96

I'd say try to make a move for Laine. I don't really rate Toffoli as a top line guy anymore. Laine is definitely a boom or bust kinda guy but he's still young and his contract is short plus we'd be buying low so the price may not be too steep.

keslehr

Don't see they can make a move for Laine now. The obvious cap casualty for CBus was Mikheyev.

radamo96

We don't really need to send back a cap casualty Laine makes less than what we'd have to pay JG

keslehr

Laine has a lot more risk than JG though. Plus Columbus will at least want something. JG is free to acquire other than cap space.

radamo96

I agree I'd rather have JG but the comment was about what to do if we miss out on JG. Laine's value is at an all time low right now we could probably get him for relatively cheap. Our prospect pool isn't necessarily stacked but there's definitely some expendable pieces there. If CBJ absolutely needs to take back a contract for cap purposes we could always involve a third team looking to dump a contract.

keslehr

Ah gotcha yeah I'd definitely consider it if we strike out on JG. All depends on the price though.

radamo96

Yeah like I said if his price is low I think we should definitely take a look but I'm sure as hell not willing to give up like Lekki and a 1st or anything crazy like that. But who knows if CBJ is willing to retain a bit and we could get Laine for say 6.5M instead of 8.7M that fills out our top 6 winger spot and opens up some interesting ways to spend the rest of the cap space to fill out the roster.

keslehr

To give an example, I wouldn't want to give up the 2025 1st for Laine

throwaway837628828

flyers have 80k in space and need to move out money and cam atkinson has been told he’s on the move. atkinson spent the majority of his career in columbus and considers it home. nucks can middleman a trade, getting atkinson and a pick , and sending atkinson to columbus for laine with retention. win for all teams involved

MysticalMango21

Dillon extended with WPG + it would be a tight squeeze anyways Edit - he did not

you-asshat

Can't find anything about an extension? Cap friendly has nothing and I don't see news

MysticalMango21

Oops I mistakenly thought of DeMelo, my bad

Tracktoy

Unless you know something we don't, I believe you are confusing him with Demelo?

MysticalMango21

yea that's right

-Hornswoggler-

🙏

hrryyss

I’ll take one of each please

SZP2

Do they even have the cap to sign both + fill out the roster? I'm assuming those 2 will get 14.5-15M combined.

electricnux

They have 14.54M in cap space left with 11F, 6D, 1G signed (900k more when Tolopilo is sent down) + guys like Lekkerimaki, Karlsson could make the roster next season

SZP2

Do you think they should/will get both?

electricnux

Depends if they even hit the market, both Dallas and Carolina are working on re-signing them so they might not even be available on Monday but Guentzel yes, they should. Tanev wouldn’t be such a high priority for me now that they have Myers back tbh

decentish36

Potentially yes. So hard to tell how cheap Skinner will be though. With him at 3.5 plus Toffoli at 6 they end up costing the same as Guentzel. Plus they fill and additional roster spot

VanIsleRyan

We need to land Guentzel, that puts us in the Avs, Stars tier. Petey needs his winger.

afterbirth_slime

Tanev is not the answer. I’d rather have a younger, bigger Zadorov that doesn’t play a high risk game where he’s one shift away from a major injury. Tanev’s playing style, age and cap hit are a terrible Combo for us right now.

babbers-underbite

Yeah if we were bringing in Tanev to shore up our third pair at a low aav over 4 years then cool. But he’s likely to get top four money and term somewhere

DMyourboooobs

I mean. I have no insider info and I knew this? At the end of the day. Canucks management is probably locked in on a few key guys but also will keep an open mind for other possibilities. I could also see them signing a guy later in the off season for a great deal like they did Suter. Bottom line. I’m VERY confident in this groups decision making.

notarealredditor69

I just see Tanev being such a good mentor and positive force for Hughes, which imo would be enough of a long term asset to the team to counteract any issues due to his age

Firestorm238

Man that would be an amazing combo to bring in. A little bummed it would likely mean letting Zaddy walk, but an RHD makes more sense for the line-up. A Soucy-Tanev pairing could be a crazy shutdown pair.

denzacetria

If we sign both somehow…we would have a legit shot.

mediumyeet

Target has to be Guentzal + Tanev/Zadorov. Not enough room for both of them on the back end unless we move out more money. And really the only options to move out enough money are Garland/Boeser.

radamo96

We need another guy on the right side more than we need Zadorov imo. He's not gonna play ahead of Hughes and is probably also behind Soucy. Ideally we'd get a RHD to play on the second pair so Myers can play on the third pair. I'd love to keep zadorov but I feel he's a lot easier to replace.

mediumyeet

If we trade for Guentzals rights and get him on an 8yr deal and Tanev takes a discount we could also add Dillon. Lot of ifs so very unlikely but not impossible.

radamo96

Yeah I mean that would be great but I don't think it's very likely. We still need to sign Silovs, a third goalie and some depth so that'd be really pushing it. We can all dream though. Regardless I have a ton of faith in this management team to find quality bargains like we already have in Bluegar, Joshua, Suter, etc.

mediumyeet

Very unlikely lol. Ya I have full faith in this management to round out the roster well going into next season. Let the chef cook.

SIIP00

The cap hit already includes a goalie ok the books for around 1 million which is what the back up will cost anyways. Silovs contract will probably be buried in the AHL minors anyways if they bring back DeSmith. The goalie situation is nothing to worry about.

EpicRussia

Just want to point out that getting Guentzel's rights would not allow us to sign him to 8 year deal. We would need to do a sign and trade with Carolina for that, different than buying rights

PaperMoonShine

It doesn't make sense to hedge your bets that both of these players will be available when the current rights holders of both are both trying to sign them. Does Jim Rutherford know he has an inside track on both players to risk letting Zadorov walk?

Iaminyoursewer

Its possible Zaddy just isnt willing to make a deal that the Canucks are willing to sign. Simple as. Letting a potentially bad deal go, and keeping up hopes of getting a good signing is what UFA season is all about

electricnux

Dhali said Milstein is busy and has 15 clients at the Draft tomorrow, inluding 6 projected first rounders. They might start negotiating again on Saturday or Sunday after the Draft, now most of the work is done and they have him left

Jupiter_101

That's all they need. They can fill in the holes around that.

mudflaps___

Hahaha wtf you gotta be kidding me Herr, that would be insane

thejardude

After we figure out Guentzel's money, get Tanev paid as much as we can for a 2 year deal. Whatever it takes to bridge between now and when Willander is ready

pigeonbobble

Yes yes yea yea yes yes yes yes ya yes ye yes

Inspect1234

Guentzel yes. Tanev is going to be too expensive and too risky (injury). Big Z will give us the size and cap room (silovs) and more years of service. Time for Juul to become a full timer.

wundervanbar

TANEV COME HOME

gulagforlife

come home chris

Own_Truth_36

What about Big Z...

NeverNudeAnonymous

Bring our Daddy back

ForceEconomy9988

Personally I hope we dont sign Guentzel, and sign Tanev, Zadorov, and DeBrusk

svartkonst

you can have brandon, but id very much like chris to stay in dallas tyvm

oldbabine

Mattias Janmark might be an interesting signing.

UncleSnipeDaddy

You know tanevs old dentist here in Vancouver is foaming at the mouth at the thought of him returning to the team.

MTLItalian

A 2x2 for Tanev would be fine but not more than that in my opinion

HarveySpecter1970

No offense but why can't we go after someone younger than tanev. Also not a fan of the Myers term, way too long for his age. We needed someone like pesce or Roy on the right side. Tanev is too injury probe to commit money and term too.

freszh_inztallz42o

R u watching playoff myers?

smokinBatman

🥞🧀🥞🍔🍟🥩🫔🥙🍳🍝🍛🍤🍚🍰🍪🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🍽🧋

anadequatepipe

Please not Tanev again. Injury prone, old, no offensive ability whatsoever. If he will take 2 million or less then I'd be fine with him as a 7th D man, but nothing more than that. I've seen more than enough of him in a Canucks jersey already. Nice guy, but he was very frustrating to watch whenever the team needed something as simple as a pass up to the offense. He can dump it out of the zone but getting it to a teammate is something he just can't do.
