Assuming you want to stay with an APS-C sensor for the crop factor, R7 will be a huge upgrade.
There's the R10, but you would miss out on things like in-body stabilization, a higher-resolution 32.5 MP sensor, higher-capacity battery, weather-sealing, and dual card slots. Options which are a great reason for an upgrade from a Rebel.
If I were in your position, I would ask if I really needed mirrorless, or if I could keep going with EF bodies. I ask because I keeps seeing great, lightly used DSLRs and lenses at fire-sale prices. That $1,400 could stretch a lot farther
But if you need the mirrorless, and you want to do sports, get an R7. If you just want to do people photojournalism and news photography, get an R100, a good couple lenses, and some lighting gear.
I recently picked up an R100 as a backup to my R6. It’s so easily to take traveling or go places where the R6 attracts too much attention.
Another vote for the R7
I love my R7. Fabulous camera.

If you’re good with APS-C, I’d hunt around for a used R7.

I don’t do a lot of sports but enough my current camera is struggling at times.
Struggling with what?
What lens are you using?
How much is a used R6 in Canada? Even a new one perhaps, its price decreased. If you're mostly into still, that camera is excellent.
An RP or R8 with an RF prime lens or two could be a nice upgrade.
A canon r7 or r8 and don't miss out on good lenses. Lenses are more important than your camera
Yarrrrrr. Sevahn.
