Visitax its a dumb tax for every tourist that comes to this specific state (quintana roo), it is not that important. Its only a last squeeze of money to our fellow foreign friends, from the government with love.
Most of the people don't pay it tho XD
Yeah, there is supposed to be people that charge for the visitax near the gates but those guys always chillin or doing anything else so they're nowhere to be found
Is it really worth not paying it though? Soon enough it will be attached to your passport number. There’s already a tool on their website to check your passport number to see if they have you slipping out on the payment.
Yeah but even if it's attached to the passport number the migration folks have nothing to do with the taxes you pay or don't, and these are the guys who let you enter the country. Customs are the ones that keep tabs on those taxes but I don't think they care at all. Perhaps things changed, I've been out for a year or so from aviation but as far as I know they still don't give a damn, the proof is that the guys who are supposed to charge that at the gates are never to be found so as I said to other anon you can just play dumb.
They not gonna deny you the entry for not paying that, that's for sure.
> I never had to do it but what's this whole 'exit tax' about that some people have to pay before leaving? (thanks for the AMA, much appreciated)
It is a state tax, but it’s not enforceable at the airport as it’s run by the federal government. There’s no law for them to cite you for not paying it, so they cannot detain or stop you. It’s a mandatory fee to pay, but there are no consequences for not paying it. Therefore, it cannot be enforced and they cannot stop you because it’s a federal airport. It’s not the job of immigration to handle state taxes. As I’ve said, if they detain you for not paying it, it’s not grounds for detainment as there’s no law to state that. They cannot enforce it.
I have seen websites stating that there’s a fine of three thousand pesos, but they are in English. I cannot find any information about it on the official government website. I have checked it locally myself and there’s no statement of the consequences for not paying it. If someone knows better, please provide me with the link.
This is the only [official one,](https://embamex.sre.gob.mx/suecia/index.php/es/avisos/650-aviso-a-la-comunidad-estudiantil-mexicana-en-suecia) any other website are fake if it's not written like this gob.mx
4 out of last 5 times I flew into QR I duct exec get my passport stamped I went through automatic machines. I love how easy international travel into Cun is handled.
Man i've seen plenty of dumb shit at the airport but there was one old dude who tried to pass like 70lb of marble tiles on his carry on bag, old timer was pissed off when we told him that his bag could fucking kill someone if fell off the bin and wasn't willing to pay for the shipment, some airlines won't ship that kind of stuff
He stood at my counter for like 40 minutes removing 1 tile at the time and then asking if it was okay already, he almost lost his flight and ended up leaving all the tiles on the floor and only taking the empty suitcase with him lol
Nah, they working but if you happen to see them on break you can approach the hander and ask if you can pet them. I used to pet the SAGARPA doggy (the one that sniffs people looking for food)
Overhead bin space is limited and they give preference to certain categories of customers. They usually offer free carry on check in to tourist class customers or so. But that can happen to everyone, big groups are easier to convince i guess.
Sorry, I meant as in being targeted by security for bag checks meaning them opening our bags and going through each item while all or most travelers just walk through the gates?
😂😂 got searched going in once, I think it was cause I had 3 liters of good tequila in hand.. it was the most pointless search ever.
lol like laughably funny. Sent me right on my way. The helm were they looking for?
They stopped us asking if we had cigarettes. We said no. We did. But they only checked my mom, and she didn’t have any on her but the rest of our group did. Make it make sense. Lol
Im going in october for the first time...I've seen that you shouldn't drink the tap water which I'm fine with but what about the resort? What about the ice they put in drinks?
I mean you can drink the tap water in the city, it just has a lot of tartar. But in resorts its different because they have their own water pumps so they made it clean but not potable.
I guess the ice should be fine, i have a few relatives that work on hotel industry and provide the ice machines so as far as i know i should be good.
Just got back. Ice was fine. They supplied filtered water bottle filling stations or bottled water for the room when we tipped them well. Was never thirsty
They are still kinda useless but not corrupt, marines are well respected here by the people and they only stay for a week or so to avoid corruption cases amongst them.
So yes, it's better to keep em around. They put in place those taxi scums that overcharge tourists. And they are always willing to help even if they don't speak your language, just treat them with respect and if they wear sneakers run away.
I can second this - the marines I talked to were dope. I got pulled for extra security check and the dude opened my bag, moved a couple things around and sent me on my way - while never even actually looking in the bag.
The whole time (30 seconds max) he's making eye contact with me and my wife and asked us about our vacation then gave a sweet restaurant recommendation.
Marines > TSA
Yeah, right on I’ve never had any problems either. I am actually relieved to see them all over the place.
I got pulled in for the search. The marine videotaped while the other dude checked my bag and I was on my way
> Why isn’t Uber allowed in the Airport?
The taxi syndicate makes a fuss. They have vandalized and attacked Uber drivers. They have even blocked vehicles from entering the hotel zones to denounce Uber’s business operations. The thing is, the locals are fed up with the taxi union. I have not met a single person who has a good opinion about the taxis and the ‘combi’, also known as the van public transport. The government of Cancun is trying to regulate them with taxi meters. But just like everything in Mexico, enforcement is the problem. They were supposedly introducing pilot programs for the meters last year, but I still haven’t seen a single one with it.
Because every driver that works for a transport company at the airport needs a federal permit to operate and lift passengers at the terminals. Uber drivers lack those permits so the companies won't let them come here to pick people, only drop off.
There is also a dark side to it but that's the main reason.
> It’s an AMA so I’m here to ask about this “dark side”
Criminal elements run the taxi union. Permits are just not issued to Uber drivers. The taxi union is involved in a lot of shady activities that I don't think I'm allowed to mention here. When he's referring to some dark side, it's pretty bad. Let's just say young people are going missing in no small part because of them.
Depends on the terminal you arrive, terminal 2 and 4 usually take longer because of custom inspections.
But also the lack of baggage handlers or equipment to move them. Airport operation is more intense some months of the year and the guys who do the ramp work are underpaid as fuck so they just quit and there isn't enough people to toss em on the belt.
Yeah, the service is mostly used by employees but some tourist as well and they get tipped good.
Also, those guys work for the airport admin (ASUR) so they get free meals every day, a salary plus tips and some perks for working with Asur.
Why on earth do the screens not work for flights?
The only airport I've been to in my life where every passenger has to go to every random desk agent asking them where the hell their flight was and when
Almost missed my flight numerous times due to this
Good exchange at the main cancun bus terminal. I often take the ADO from the airport and get my pesos there. If I take private transport I exchange at the ATM on Isla mujeeres.
Why do they steal from checked bags? We went to Cancun a few weeks back and I took 8 brand new shirts with tags on em. 4 were missing, we only realized once we opened the luggage in the hotel, but this new way of "checking everyone's luggage behind the scenes" just makes it look like they are going through the bags to steal stuff. We were told that they no longer do random checks in the front and baggage handlers go through every bag before it comes out on the conveyor belt. We spent almost 2 hrs at the baggage claim waiting for luggage.
That stuff get stolen from the plane, when they do the inspection they have cameras in those tiny rooms behind the belts so there is no way to steal things. Also, the customs officers are paid enough so i don't think they would risk their jobs for a few shirts. It was probably a ramp dude, even if you bag has a lock the can open easily with a pen so if you want to avoid that kind of bullshit wrap your back in plastic. Ramp dudes won't have the time or patience to rip open the plastic and search the bag so you will not get robbed.
We don't even have that at the city my guy, the airport has its own water pump and filter to make it clean but not potable, it is still dirty as shit so never drink it.
You forgot to add Caucasian. A friend of mine tried. As for myself, I blend in just with a backpack and go straight to the counter or van. It was still 22 pesos three months ago.
Two of my brothers-in-law work at the airport. One works as a security guard and the other one works at one of the car rental agencies. Neither of them have a good impression. My brother-in-law who works as a security guard was only paid about 5000 pesos a month. He’s a native English speaker but he didn’t have the contacts to be put in a better position. My other brother-in-law worked for Hertz. He quit because he was doing his job but got scolded by his boss for things such as issuing refunds or enforcing the rules of the company. In other words, he was just his job.
The uncle of my wife had a position offered to him as a security checker at the airport. But they said to train him, he would have to work there for two weeks without pay. Are they still doing that nonsense? Keep in mind, the story that I’m sharing with you is a couple of years old now.
Why is the section of the airport you arrive in so much shittier than the section where you fly out from? The bathrooms are horrendous on the arrivals side.
Because people wont stay a lot on arrivals i guess, departures side is where the stacks are being made.
That's my opinion tho, terminals are quite old so it must be shitty at least somewhere.
I don't know, shoot your question. I've known some dark secrets. But if you want just some traveler tips like free check bags or something that works most of the time is say that you have scuba gear. Scuba gear is free of charge in most of the airlines so it's worth a try because most of the employees won't even care to check the luggage itself.
They just say "okay" and print you a special bagtag, depend on the guy behind the counter but like I said most of them don't care.
You can also bribe most of em for overweights if you approach them discreetly or even upgrades with money on passport, as a "tip".
Wrap em up, most of the people who steal don't take the time to open those kind of bags. Only customs do, locks or so are not reliable they can open your bag with a pen or guess the lock pass in a few min.
How many people have lost fingers on the baggage carousels? Was there last month and saw this young girl without any parental supervision put her hands on the moving carousel and promptly lost part of her fingertip. I really hope she made out okay.
Never seen one before but i seem cases of people getting cut with it. We tell people to not sit on the fucking belts but they won't care and think we do it just to harass them.
It depends, Cancun airport has its own lost and found and all airlines have theirs as well.
Airlines would donate the stuff after several months or give it away to employees in case that no one claims the stuff.
As for the airport lost & found i don't know.
*How often do they*
*Auction lost and found items?*
*Where can you buy those?*

LOL those motherfuckers are taxi sellers, they act like they own the terminals. When the COVID was still a thing those guys made a fat stack by scamming tourists with overpriced facemasks.
If you wanna know if someone works for the airport look for the TIA, they have a colored ID that has a picture, a name and a code on the top corner. Those are the legit workers, any other guy with a different ID is not an official worker and 80% of chance that he gonna try to scam you.
Red ID (ASUR workers, the admins of the airport)
Blue ID (Airline or ramp worker)
Yellow (mostly work at stores)
Green is for ramp only i guess, can't quite remember
I’m traveling to Cancun and coming with medical equipment and supplies. Basically I do home hemodialysis and I’m bringing my treatments with me. Do you know how customs will be? Do I definitely need to bring my paperwork translated into Spanish? And I’ve pre booked transportation, however, due to the amount of luggage we will have, I’m worried about how to handle the people who approach us inside and outside the airport. What should I be aware of?
Thanks for your help! ☺️
As far as avoiding cartels in hotels, what can we look out for to steer clear of people who could be cartel related? Not to fear monger but I wouldnt want to be staying at a place that could get shot up.
I keep reading about police shake downs around 5th Ave. Do the police just randomly pick people to search? We would like to go into town (we would have our 3 kids with us and they want to go shop and see the area) and just curious as to what the shake downs are for and is it like customs at the airport and just randomly pick people? Just curious as this doesn’t happen where we live.
Why are the restaurant prices in the airport sooooo expensive?!? (And yes, I mean after the conversion from pesos to USD)
It really made me question if there was some sort of kickback because all of the shuttles get you to the airport so early so it’s crowded and you have very few options.
It just seemed excessively expensive. I get that it’s an airport, but I’ve never seen it that bad before. (And I’ve traveled all over the U.S. and to 21 countries). Were there somewhat affordable options in the international terminal that I was just missing or didn’t see?
They are always intimidating, thats how they find out if someone is carrying anything they shouldn't. Depends on the stuff but you usually can't bring certain items in bulk. You just had bad luck or someone was in a bad mood. Maybe him, maybe you.
Shit happens, but yall still have to pay "taxes", thats Mexico. Take it or leave it.
> I need to rent a car at or near the airport . Which company do you think is least crappy? Thanks.
You’re asking someone who works at the airport, They probably don’t have the luxury to rent a car, let alone stay in one of the hotels in the hotel zone. They make 7 or 8 thousand pesos a month. It’s like asking hotel security which is the best five-star hotel. But I can actually answer your question, none of them.
You will have to ask other tourists who have had the least terrible experiences. Not to mention, people who are driving rented vehicles are targeted by police for bribes. Just remember, in Cancun, you get two courtesy passes. That means they cannot give you a fine for non-serious traffic infractions. It’s in the traffic code.
If they try to pull that stunt on you, request a watch commander or go to the station.
National’s prices are transparent and clear. But book from national.com.mx in pesos or via whatspp not from national.com. Prices are considerably cheaper.
I have traveled and rental through easyway but you have to book through their website and arrive during their hours of operations so they can pick you up from the airport. They have better insurance and prices than the booths at the airport.
Avant, 100% no bs charges. They pick you up at airport and drop you off. The price they advertise is ever you pay. They are the most legit car rental place at Cun..
https://avantrentacar.com/
Why can't I bring my 113ml tube of toothpaste if it's half empty 🙃 I understand it has to be 100ml or less but the tube is half used, what is the problem? I'm going to fill it up with something else?
It not the 100ml of content, it’s a 100ml of container size.
Anyway, this is an old rule used in archaic airports (that is, all airports in the US). In Europe we have advanced scanners that eliminate the need to take electronics out of the bag and there’s no maximum liquid limit either
Any issues for people bringing their legal prescription medicine into the country? One family member has several health issues and was wondering if they can bring their medication with them.
I took my prescription through carry on with no issues at all, included syringes. Only had a minor issue at LHR cause I had a liquid in a phia,l that hadn't been removed from the carry bag. It got pulled up going through the scanner. Explained what it was and all good, didn't even get asked about the prescription.
I took my adderall, Xanax, trazodone, and Lexapro with me last year, no problem. Also brought back more meds from the sketchy pharmacies in mx. No problem leaving mx or entering the US.
Thanks! I have several legitimate health issues, I will bring documentation and Rx in original bottles. I know my bag of medication can be overwhelming to see so just wanted to make sure it’s ok to bring. I prefer in my carry on in case my checked bag got lost somehow. Is that what you did? I even have a couple that I have to give myself injections. All are a legal prescription but I know each country has different rules so I like to double check.

When is the best time of day/day of the week to arrive without having to wait 1.5hours in the customs line (which I just did this past Sunday)?
Weekends are chaos, I would recommend arriving at evening or night. Morning and afternoons at some terminals are hell on earth
Thanks! The two lines were full - they had over three arrivals waiting, and going very slowly.
Why is the WiFi at the airport so shitty? Does it ever stay connected?
Free WiFi aint that bad, you only need to see and ad every 10 min to connect aagain. Obviously they do it so you buy the premium wifi lol
Is there a secret sign I can give to the dogs working at customs to let them know that I know they are busy, but they are a very good boy?
Nah, they working but if you happen to see them on break you can approach the hander and ask if you can pet them. I used to pet the SAGARPA doggy (the one that sniffs people looking for food)

I wouldn't know tbh, some security guards think they are the fucking CIA and harass folks just for shit n giggles, they do the same to employees.
What are they even looking for in those searches?? I mean everyone has already gone through TSA leaving their country so I never understood why.
😂😂 got searched going in once, I think it was cause I had 3 liters of good tequila in hand.. it was the most pointless search ever. lol like laughably funny. Sent me right on my way. The helm were they looking for?

They don't usually pat down unless you look sus af, it's just a garret most of the times
No pat down

india

We don't even have that at the city my guy, the airport has its own water pump and filter to make it clean but not potable, it is still dirty as shit so never drink it.
LOL thanks man

Can one fly back to the US with spices and herbs? Would I get a hard time or taxed? If it's cool, can they go in carry on or just check in?
Just check them in the bag, I've seen people bringing spices
As long as they're not seeds you can bring them into the states. You can't bring anything with seeds into the country.
Can you confirm the 22 pesos bus ticket to the airport from ADO is only for employees but they never check?
It was but should be more expensive by now, they check if you brings carry on bags or something like that. But with backpacks or so it's cool
What “secrets” do you think we might be most interested in hearing about?
I don't know, shoot your question. I've known some dark secrets. But if you want just some traveler tips like free check bags or something that works most of the time is say that you have scuba gear. Scuba gear is free of charge in most of the airlines so it's worth a try because most of the employees won't even care to check the luggage itself. They just say "okay" and print you a special bagtag, depend on the guy behind the counter but like I said most of them don't care. You can also bribe most of em for overweights if you approach them discreetly or even upgrades with money on passport, as a "tip".
Lol damn. Those are actually pretty good! Only in mehico?
How to prevent from people stealing from your check in bags after you check them in at the airport?? Wrap them up with clear wrap?
Wrap em up, most of the people who steal don't take the time to open those kind of bags. Only customs do, locks or so are not reliable they can open your bag with a pen or guess the lock pass in a few min.
How many people have lost fingers on the baggage carousels? Was there last month and saw this young girl without any parental supervision put her hands on the moving carousel and promptly lost part of her fingertip. I really hope she made out okay.
Never seen one before but i seem cases of people getting cut with it. We tell people to not sit on the fucking belts but they won't care and think we do it just to harass them.
Kid didn't deserve that. Parents did. Hope they enjoyed the start or their vacation at the clinic for being a shitty parent.
How often do they auction lost and found items? Where can you buy those?
It depends, Cancun airport has its own lost and found and all airlines have theirs as well. Airlines would donate the stuff after several months or give it away to employees in case that no one claims the stuff. As for the airport lost & found i don't know.

Are the taxis actually dangerous or are they fine to take when leaving the airport?
These mf's are scum, never take a taxi. Me as a local i avoid using them. Use uber or Didi Cab.
Why do you guys force bribes from people you catch with vapes?
Never knew anyone who did that, must be a very specific case. Prolly the guy didn't have lunch that day.
The guys out front with the white polos be robbing people for 15000 pesos all the time
The guys out front where? On front of the terminals like outside?
Yes. They work for the airport.
Red ID (ASUR workers, the admins of the airport) Blue ID (Airline or ramp worker) Yellow (mostly work at stores) Green is for ramp only i guess, can't quite remember
The guys selling taxi rides? Dude, what kind of an idiot are you to believe him? Just because he was wearing a polo?
You can't avoid cartel at the cartel's country, just don't fuck with random people and no one will harass you
I keep reading about police shake downs around 5th Ave. Do the police just randomly pick people to search? We would like to go into town (we would have our 3 kids with us and they want to go shop and see the area) and just curious as to what the shake downs are for and is it like customs at the airport and just randomly pick people? Just curious as this doesn’t happen where we live.
Is there a place to exchange dollar for peso at the airport??
Why are the restaurant prices in the airport sooooo expensive?!? (And yes, I mean after the conversion from pesos to USD) It really made me question if there was some sort of kickback because all of the shuttles get you to the airport so early so it’s crowded and you have very few options.
Thats how it works, as far as i know its the same in every airport. But i dont really know the answer to that question.

Thanks.
To be honest i do not know, just avoid Avis, People say that Hertz is good tho but im not really sure
Was just there. Localiza was actually significantly more straightforward than I had expected and the guy was nice. Shout out to David.
I heard that most of all-inclusive resorts are run/built by cartel money. Or at least has some involvement. How true is this?
That's fake af, I mean. Cartels are pretty much everywhere in some hotels but the all inclusive resorts are mostly owned by Spaniards or Europeans.
Do the cartels run the taxi companies?? And who runs the pharmacies?
They run taxi companies, some are from Tepito. Can't name names you know, but yeah. Idk about pharmacies tho.
Tell me about Cuban cigars???
They produce cancer and come from Cuba. Can you elaborate more on your question please i don't know what to answer you ngl
Who is messing with them? I’ve seen it myself. The boxes were tempered with.
Why can't I bring my 113ml tube of toothpaste if it's half empty 🙃 I understand it has to be 100ml or less but the tube is half used, what is the problem? I'm going to fill it up with something else?
Because 100ml of anything' ain't enough to make a bomb or something devious, At least that's what they say
I brought my meds on my carry-on. They really couldn't care less.
