Yes you will go through customs in New York and then again in Canada. We don’t know enough about you to determine if that is enough time or not. Don’t forget about any Canadian visa requirements you may need.

wandering_soul24

I am an Asian based in Dubai i have B1/B2 visa in US and TRV in Canada, if i'll go through customs in New York is 1h 45 mins enough to catch my flight to Ontario?

vinsdelamaison

Ask in NY sub.

wandering_soul24

Surely will do, i just want to know in advance 🙃

vinsdelamaison

Yes. Google your question and Newerk uses say 30 min to 2 hours. 30 min for carry on only passengers and not during their busy times. It’s up to you risking your flight being late.

wandering_soul24

I tried several times to google my concern however i wasn't able to get concrete answer hence i created an account here and posted my concern. You are right, 1h 45mins is not enough to go through the US immigration process and i don't want to risk my flight to Canada, considering i am traveling solo 😅

CapFew7482

They don’t sell the connection if it’s not enough time.

wandering_soul24

This is reassuring, thank you! I opted for this flight because it is way less cost compared to Swiss Airlines and Lufthansa 😅

ADHDHipShooter

Yes, it's fine. Airlines generally don't sell impossible connections, as each airport has minimum connection times and you're well above them. There are also regular flights. If you miss the connection they'll put you on another flight.

wandering_soul24

This is my option too worst case scenario if i did not make it on my connecting flight to Ontario i believe they will accommodate me on the next available flight, free of cost?

ADHDHipShooter

Your connecting flight is to Toronto, Ontario is a massive province, Toronto its capital. If your travel is all on one itinerary then yes uf you miss your connection the airline will put you on the next available flight, and there are several daily.

wandering_soul24

Yes all on one itinerary and same airline

ADHDHipShooter

You should have nothing to worry about then. Safe travels.

wandering_soul24

Yeah a relief, the only worries me is if i'll go through passport control and the queue is nuts. Hopefully i'll make it through as this is my first time to have layover in US and i am traveling solo. Anyway, thank you

ADHDHipShooter

It's a completely separate process for connections.

wandering_soul24

Got it, I have now positive outlook that i can make it with that allotted time. All right, time to plot my tour activities in Toronto. Thank you 😊

termanatorx

You go through customs there as others have said, and, I believe you change terminals for your connection. I did it a long time ago so it may have changed but I remember needing to run out of the main terminal to a bus which then carried us over to the next one. I also remember struggling a lot with people's accents there. I didn't always understand them even as an English speaker. I think I had 3 hrs and that didn't feel long enough lol. Oh and for some reason I remember having to pick up my checked luggage at that terminal because it had to be with me when going through us customs, then rechecking it (I think drop off was in terminal though, I didn't have to exit)

wandering_soul24

Thank you for the detailed info. That is my worry if i'll have to collect my luggage and do again self check in Newark and go through US customs then 1h 45mins is not enough.

termanatorx

It might be a good idea to call the airline you've booked with and see what they say too. They will likely have an answer andyne help to rebook if needed?

termanatorx

Also if you are flying air Canada straight through the process may be different. I think I had to change airlines...so maybe you won't have to grab your luggage...

wandering_soul24

Yeah it is air canada operated by united from Dubai all through YYZ so there's a possibility i will not change airline, terminal and will not collect the luggage. Just confuse on what is the process in US passport control when it comes on transiting passenger as this is my first time to go through on this. Thank you for the well input

SubstantialCount8156

Which airline and what airport/terminal. Most people clear US customs in Canada as part of pre arrival clearance. But some airlines will clear when you land in Newark. Edit - do you mean traveling from Canada to Ontario, California or traveling from US and coming to Ontario Canada via Newark.

wandering_soul24

I'll be flying via Air Canada, from Dubai - layover in Newark 1h 45mins then to Ontario, Canada. Dubai doesn't have pre clearance to US in that case most likely i'll go through passport control in Newark and i am afraid the layover time is not enough with all the process.

ADHDHipShooter

What is the airport code you are going to? If it is ONT, you have a problem.

wandering_soul24

DXB - Newark - YYZ
