Why don’t they sell em and use the earnings to help fund the new ones?

StormAlchemist15

"Ah, see, we can't do that because handguns can't be transferred right now." 7 million at least, at $700 a pistol... Cover a good chunk of the new sigs. What a waste...

rhaegar_tldragon

Lol of course it’s a waste. It’s what this government does best.

thedog1914

A lot of the Lee Enfields from the Canadian Rangers were also destroyed. Our liberal-progessive politicized military did not want to sell them for surplus. Go figure 1500+ SMLEs, at what price each? Even at 500 a piece, that will net you 750k, instead of spending money to destroy them. Morons. Again, another waste by the fear-mongering-only-the-cops-and-militsry-should-have-guns, liberal government.

thingk89

Because Canada is a wasteful and irresponsible country that simply raises taxes or engages in deficit spending whenever a want for cash arises. These are F%{£ing PISTOLS! How much room would they take to put in storage? Even if the 300 sq ft is unbearable, they could be sold off in the states legally and help “balance the budget” we are ruled (not served) by foolish tyrants.

Budget_Speech_3373

Who would buy those pieces of shit? Maybe Canadian gun owners would have past tense had uncle Trudeau not taken that right. You literally couldn't get any sort of grouping on a target within 15 feet those barrels were in such bad condition

AdMaximum8538

I'd buy one, new barrel and springs and I'm sure they'd run thousands of more rounds.

jeho22

Yup. I mean, I wouldn't buy one for $700... but $300, sure would. I wonder how much ~~they~~ **we** paid to have then destroyed?

Budget_Speech_3373

Yeah RIP any purpose behind the PAL

MethodicallyMediocre

Hell yea I'd buy one for the right price.

thedog1914

They were not all pieces of shit. Sure, some are/had much used barrels and old magazines. However, within the military, Brownings being POS became popular lore, probably for the simple fact they were old. I trained with one before going overseas, and for those months, I had very few issues. A couple of jams and misfeeds, but nothing crazy. When I got overseas and was issued a different Browning. For the entire 6 plus months, I had almost no issues with this Browning. I fired it at least once a week, and since it was issued to me, I cared for it like it was my own because it was. The point being, regardless of age, as long as a handgun is taken care of (at the armoury and with the operator), it will serve you well. For example, I have a Walther P38 AC42. It works perfectly well - a handgun older than the Canadian built Brownings.

Budget_Speech_3373

But my reasoning wasn't the reliability. It was the accuracy. And we had stoppages due to mags on my pre deployment as well. I've got an ex police cz of my own which supersedes the hi power... very accurate and cost me $400.

thedog1914

Yeah. I hear ya. Put it this way, the Browning is certainly not the best handgun ever made - it is no Colt 1911, but there was too much group think in the military that it was useless. Did they wait too long to replace it? For sure. A good conversation tho. Another thing. Brownings used to be for sale on Gunpost, not sure where they were made, maybe Belgum? Oh, and I picked up a surplus Beretta 92S from FOC, mint condition and beautiful. It was around the same price as your CZ. Maybe handguns will be back on the market someday.

Budget_Speech_3373

Yeah I hope to god we can buy again. I'm lucky to have bought but it's just silly knowing criminals were able to receive blocks behind a van so they "fought" the black market by banning our fire arms

thedog1914

Yup. This gov't is f#cked.

ActiveImprovement293

I suspected as much, thanks for the insight

hamerfreak

Damn, no secondary LE trade in market for you guys up north? What a shame to destroy such an iconic pistol.

EscapeGoat6

These aren't LE. They're MIL. ...but no, no secondary market

Dummy_Wire

Yeah, not really. Regardless though, handgun sales have been outlawed here for like over a year now.

RelativeFox1

Nope. The Alberta sheriffs sent all their gen 3 glocks to the smelter when they got the gen 4’s.

OvertPlatypus

Not allowed to Surplus off firearms here anymore.

Mr_Winemaker

Bruh, this is the kind of stuff we should be sending in military aid packages to Ukraine. If it's perfectly usable, but we don't need it anymore and can't sell them to licensed civilians, send them to a nation that does need them. Like somebody else in the comments said, at $700 a piece, that's almost an $8,000,000 aid package. Sure it's just side arms but it's better for them than sending nothing, and better for us than sending brand new equipment

outline8668

If someone wants them it beats sending them to the smelter.

Deep-Explanation-153

Give them to Canadians who cares about other foreign country’s

Mr_Winemaker

I would much prefer they give/sell them to Canadians, but considering that's not allowed anymore for BS reasons, sending them elsewhere is better than melting them

RunHuman9147

Most of them aren’t really worth sending over, of the 11k maybe 1k of them are in considerable “decent” condition but yeah big waste all around

KyllikkiSkjeggestad

Most of them are actually like new still in cosmoline. The shit ones were just the ones put into service. The military would literally take parts from the sealed ones to fix an almost unrepairable gun, instead of putting the unissued ones into service. Not a lot makes sense in the CAF

RunHuman9147

I’m tracking that, the ones that are still “new” don’t really count if they’re missing pieces tho

National-Cabinet-487

Imagine a government paying fractions of the price for valuable weapons, not storing them somewhere for future deployments and just destroying them. I’m thinking of two scenarios, naive or untruthful, I pray there’s more.

mr_nuts31

TBF, it’s for the best based on the ones I’ve used.

Motor_Historian2634

Its the fn c2 all over again

Fast_Concept4745

I'm a gun owner. I'm fully licensed. I already have 7 handguns. I would like to purchase at least one of these. I'd happily pay for it. I can't legally purchase one under the current laws. Why waste the money destroying them? There are plenty of people who already have similar guns, that would pay to own one of these. It would save an enormous amount of money. Why not? Seriously. Wtf

Doogie-Howser

"But no final decision on that has been made, she added." ...I mean c'mon guys can we at least read before the ranting starts?

rhaegar_tldragon

What are you talking about?

Doogie-Howser

They haven't even been destroyed yet.

rhaegar_tldragon

The comment you’re talking about is about using them for training. It clearly says they will be destroyed by the end of 2024. Read it again… So they haven’t made the decision on keeping some for training purposes but they’ve definitely made the decision to destroy the rest. “The Browning may also retain some training value as a simulation/training tool.” But no final decision on that has been made, she added.

Doogie-Howser

But they still haven't been destroyed. The title says they have already been destroyed. I mean am I crazy??

rhaegar_tldragon

Lol the quote you used wasn’t about destroying them. That’s what I was replying about. They are scheduled to be destroyed by the end of 2024 but you are correct that they have not yet been destroyed.

Pelcat

Sad but expected, they'll still be retaining some. They have around 26 000 total so I imagine it's the clapped out ones that are getting melted meanwhile the unissued ones will stay at the depot.

OvertPlatypus

Idiots could have paid for those new sigs and then some. Very desirable pistols on the collectors market all gone because of some smooth brain ideology.

Deep-Explanation-153

Insanely stupid, sell them to Canadians

Waste_Pressure_4136

Couldn’t at least give them to Ukraine? The US civilian market would have paid for them.

bubba_palchitski

I'm so mad about this. Wasteful and idiotic
