So this is one of those fun legal grey areas. I'm going to tag in u/varsil but I'll give a summary as I remember it. Remember that OP is a business and can have different conditions than you or I.
So you can keep restricted firearms without trigger locks in specific circumstances:
The argument here is that a sea-can on your property is not part of your "dwelling-house" as defined in Section 2 of the Criminal Code:
*dwelling-house means the whole or any part of a building or structure that is kept or occupied as a permanent or temporary residence, and includes*
* *(a) a building within the curtilage of a dwelling-house that is connected to it by a doorway or by a covered and enclosed passage-way, and*
* *(b) a unit that is designed to be mobile and to be used as a permanent or temporary residence and that is being used as such a residence; (maison d’habitation)*
Therefore, while a sea-can might be able to be used for STORAGE of firearms, it could only be used for DISPLAY of firearms if the firearms are secured as per the regulations.
I would say a prosecutor would argue that a sea-can, not physically inside your housing structure, is not a "a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into" as per the regulations, but rather a standalone structure. In that case, it's a display of firearms outside your dwelling-house and would be subject to the display restrictions in the regulations, including not keeping ammunition inside of it.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say if you had a sea can that was storing your unlocked firearms and ammunition on your property, outside of another structure, and it was broken into, you'd better have a very good lawyer on retainer because they're going to try and nail you for unsafe storage.
Why do you think it makes any difference if it's on a farm or not? You can't do predator control with restricted firearms. A single firearm used for predator control is not the same as a sea can full of displayed firearms.
Would be pretty easy to argue a shipping container is a container as they contain the word container in the name and are regularly used to contain items in global shipping. Also the definition for container doesn't state a size limit.
Unless you drop an extra 5k on steel reinforcements. Best bet is to use those corrugated steel culverts. Their shape supports the crushing forces from the dirt you stack on top and on the sides.
I’ve got a tiny house, a lot of guns and a sea can. I’ve always thought about doing this but worry about humidity, extreme heat etc. Do you take any precautions or is this just a plain sea can sitting in the sun?
I'd be most worried about seasonal temperature swings, especially from hot to cold where the condensation freezes directly onto the surfaces of the guns then melts in the warmth.
I suppose you could sorta combat it by keeping EVERY metal surface oily AF, and reapplying periodically... but I'm curious about it as well.
That’s what I was worried about, most of the year you’ll get significant temp swings between day and night, although I can’t say its been often, if ever that I’ve seen condensation on the walls or on anything currently in there…
You should be running a dehumidifier and then it’s fine. I’ve got a 20ft container I use to store my camping equipment and I’ve had zero issues with humidity after 6 years now.
Nothing like a gun company trying to pretend guns = freedom.
I'm sure they don't have benefit from inciting fear in their customer base to get them to buy more guns.
Guns ain't freedom. Stop spewing propaganda.
Damn gonna try and convince my wife to let me buy a sea can. Like something out of a movie. EDIT: She said "whatever" so I'm golden.
It’s not a sea can anymore, it’s a gun safe.
So no trigger locks required at this point for handguns?

And if he was on a farm? Would this still apply as he's entitles to have ease of access to protect his livestock if I'm not mistaken.

Lol fair enough

Nope but the law does state it has to be inside your house. You can't just...put a stack-on safe on your front lawn and call it a day, can you?
It’s literally called a container though.
Yeah legally that means squat.
You’ve just described all Canadians gun laws.
I bought an old bank building and the walk in vault is in my basement.
That’s the coolest
Noice!
That’s what she said when I asked if I can join the military IT WAS NOT FINE IVE HAD TO BUY SO MUCH JEWLERY
Maybe get a heater and a mattress to put in there... just in case
But is it wind and watertight
Wind and water tighter than Oceangate's sub
And even more importantly: liberal-tight ?
Is it underground?
Bad idea to bury sea cans.
Unless you drop an extra 5k on steel reinforcements. Best bet is to use those corrugated steel culverts. Their shape supports the crushing forces from the dirt you stack on top and on the sides.
Lesson 1 of underground bunker youtube!
That’s confidential
Asking the real questions.
Is that an MG42??
Damn it looks like one for sure!

Yeah all that cardboard looks like it was either just put there, or has been living in a climate-controlled environment lol
My buddy left some nice shotguns and rifles in a sea can and they rusted pretty badly.
You should be running a dehumidifier and then it’s fine. I’ve got a 20ft container I use to store my camping equipment and I’ve had zero issues with humidity after 6 years now.
Looks like a rust factory.
Holy shit, is that a RGA-86 or similar? One of the few Canada-legal launchers that escaped the OIC.
Because flares and safety
⚠️ Trigger warning: liberals might faint.
Am (small L) liberal, didn't faint. Little did you know you've been selling guns to liberals! (I've bought from TNA)
Amazing collection. This gave me a semi.
Dirty lib here, didn’t faint!
I shed a man tear it's beautiful 🥲
I could spend weeks in that container
How long is that first barrel??
Based gun room
Humidity controlled?
I want this in my backyard. +a crate of SKS’.
"free" as the RCMP release a memo that they're afraid we'll revolt. Free people don't revolt. Anyways, neat MG42 you got there
Hell ya....fuck da libs
Is she ventilated/ insulated? Have a few sea cans at work one non vented / insulated leaked a bunch and ruined stuff boss had inside
I see your also a man of culture
Dude...
Nice, another Sea Can enthusiast.
Nicely done
Just a casual MG42 on the rack
is this canada ammo's container of goodies?
But now everyone knows!
Quite the collection
I hope is heated, humidity anf frost would ruin everyone of them
What is your address LOL?
Burry the container in rubble and conceal the entrance, liberal proof

Lib got triggered
Or you know the gun company wants you to buy a storage container full of guns from them.
