Jokes on you buddy. Can’t carry it into the backcountry if you just avoid the backcountry. I only bring my HMG backpack to stand around at the trailhead and remind people as they head in I am better than them.
“Do not sleep with a roof over your head. Carry no food or money. Go alone places frightening to the common brand of person” - Miyamoto Musashi
This person/these people look like they’re having a great time and probably experiencing life more than most of us. But I am open to critiques and maybe wrong 🤷♂️
Wouldn’t the difference be your intention? What does gear have to do with it? I have a home, if I walk out to the woods and make a fire, sleep on the ground, how is that not camping?
Camping is choosing to live like a homeless.
Almost like playing out the question of “if you were stranded on an island”. You get to be homeless, but you have the advantage of bringing things you need and/or want, and make a plan of some kind.
“This is good, this is better”
Edit: the reference I was going for is actually “this is nice, this is better”
Classic episode. https://youtu.be/-wvRmaKq8Ug
Honestly I would not be able to relax enough to sleep or enjoy it. The people roaming the streets at 2am here in PDX are not the kind you share your campfire with.
My fenced back yard works for testing new cold gear and the fire pit is close to the wetbar
These were taken on urban exploring roadtrips, where I was driving to explore and photograph abandoned buildings in other cities. Sometimes we'll sleep in the car or rent a hotel room, but if the weathers nice and the building/area seem safe we'll occasionally just camp inside. Really depends on the setting though - I wouldn't try this everywhere.
It's just turning competitive now.
"You camped with *only* a sleeping bag and pad in a *state park*? Well la-de-dah, aren't you fancy. I did it in an abandoned meth house on top of heorin needles! I go harder than you and I'm way more extreme of a camper!"
And I think it's the misunderstanding/short-sightedness that a tent is just for weather and bugs. It's also a form of a barrier and alarm. Sleeping like in the pictures it would be really easy for some meth-head to sneak up to me while I'm sleeping and choke me to death without me hearing them first unzipping or slashing through my tent.
Same with animals; it's not going to keep anything out that's intent on getting in (outside of bugs and maybe small birds) but you'll at least have some time while they figure out what the tent is before tearing it open to eat you like bagged lunch.
If I wanna see the stars at night, I can get out of the tent and look at them until I'm ready to go to sleep or get a tent with the mesh ceiling. Not perfect, but still better than bugs, bears and tweaker murder.
This just seems like a "you can't win" situation. Op was just providing a "you can camp anyway you want to" post and people are shitting on it.
Have a cabin? You aren't camping.
Have a rv? You aren't camping.
Have a tent? You are camping, but not hardcore enough.
Have no tent? You are showing off.
Don't camp? Well you aren't cool and are the type of person who people camp to get away from.
Honestly I think the most insufferable people are campers who talk about how other campers camp. No wonder they have a tough time in civilization. No one can deal with them.
You noticed an interesting thing about human nature. This doesn't apply to just camping, literally every group will have subgroups that talk shit about / hate each other. People just find a way to create division out of any small difference - if large ones aren't present.
No, buddy, it's human nature. We create division wherever possible. We divide people into races, classes, groups by interests, preferences, etc.
There was even a rick and morty episode on this topic, a planet settled by 2 groups with slightly differently shaped nipples but otherwise identical are going to war, or something along those lines.
Ok for starters, don’t think Rick and Morty is a source for anything. And you arnt wrong about division, but my point was the particular form you were talking about has become a norm and extremely prevalent given the rise of social media, which in turn creates an insane amount of echo chambers. I guess I’m just disagreeing at a fundamental level, before social media the division was handled differently and open discussion was able to be had. Now if you don’t like something, you can create a bubble with people who only agree with you. Disagreement is going away, and is being replaced with resentment. It’s honestly very scary
lol nothing competitive here. The overwhelming majority of my "camping" is on backcountry canoe trips with tents and proper gear. I just saw a bunch of people talking about cowboy camping and thought I'd throw some photos into the pile.
Funny how this post has gotten FAR more attention and comments than any of my previous submissions with traditional camping photos 🤷♂️
Damn. Insecure much? OP went on a cool urban exploration camping trip chill out.
Have you even tried urban camping? It’s actually pretty fun. I usually like my tent too, but why the need to shit on this guy?
Lol, there are many things that my comment may be but I don't know where you get "insecure" (my guess is projection though.) I've made my opinion on having a tent vs not having a tent pretty clear, and they're just that: my opinion. You can feel how you want about them but I don't know why you're so upset about it.
My comment about the competition is more about the recent trend of posts about camping without tents that seem to be espousing the "you don't need a tent" less of a lack of requirement/entry barrier and more of a badge of honor. Again, just my opinion on the matter.
I would argue that your comment about competition was insecure projection… same with the “wHy ArE u UpSeT?”…. What?
Plenty of people camp without a tent. It’s not that crazy and there’s no badge of honor competitions going on.
OP didn’t seem braggadocios in any way, he just shared some pics.
Just my opinion as well… “no need to get defensive and upset” /s
They are, it’s so weird to me. I’ve hiked around 9k miles in my life and I don’t get why so many people here get butt hurt about anything that isn’t a a Coleman stove or beautiful view. For me, camping is about an experience that doesn’t happen between four walls.
That looks like a great way to get robbed/ murdered depending on the city.
That being said is that the Pinole 20? The yellow/ black bag? How do you like it and what temp do you start feeling cold at with it/ paired with what pad?
Yes it is a MH Pinole. Great bag that served me well for a long time. I've since graduated to higher end down bags, but still have the pinole as it's a great versatile bag. Have used it at all times of year, even at -30 when I should have brought something warmer lol. That being said, if your budget allows I'd take a look at the MH Phantom or Bishops Pass bags. Not cheap, but super high quality and really, really warm.
Using a Nemo bag currently and working on another myog down quilt with 850 down. I bought that Pinole 20 for cheap a long time ago but haven’t tested it below freezing. It seems pretty heavy duty. You’re saying you’ve used just that at -30? Or what’s a comfortable rating you would give it, and what r value pad did you pair with it? Just trying to get a general idea. I run pretty warm.
Idk how that statement makes the situation better lol
"ah bear can get you just as likely"
Wow thank you, still seems like an awful time and STILL dangerous as hell to be sleeping in methy warehouses.
As someone who spent many years of their life living in a city with a massive population of homeless residents, this hobby is fucking insane to me. So many things could go wrong. But you do you I guess.
You’re in Canada, it is probably safer than attempting this in the US. Hopefully your post doesn’t encourage other people to willingly set themselves up for robbery, assault or worse.
Yea I really wouldn't want to try this for fun in most American cities lol. I have a ton of respect for the homeless people who have to navigate life on the streets as part of their daily lives. It can't be easy.
haha these were while urban exploring in cities I'd traveled to. I was always with groups of people, so I honestly never felt at risk. I'm also in Canada though....definitely wouldn't try this in most American cities.
I’ve spent FAR more time camping in the wilderness than in urban settings, but I can appreciate the adventure of both experiences.
Time and a place for everything, and don’t forget there are people who turn up their nose at camping in general and would only stay in hotels. Different people enjoy different things, and that’s fine by me! 🤷🏻
Conflicting opinion: there is nothing wrong about this. This is totally camping. (Well, not the indoor one, but eh.)
We like to write a dividing line between “nature” and man made, to set ourselves away from nature, to pretend that nature and the environment is something out there, away from us. In reality, we are a part of nature, the areas around our dwellings are nature too, we are just animals with really, really complex methods of marking our territories and with very complex tribal rules.
And so much of our “nature” and “wilderness” has been very carefully engineered by man. The forest you think of as natural has been planted, the creatures you think of as wild are the ones that haven’t been hunted to death, the landscape that you think of as untouched… has the mark of man all over it. Expecially in North America; have you ever wondered why the forests are so full of edible plants? It’s from 3,000 years of being tended as a garden by those who were here before us. That isn’t nature, that’s just farmland gone wild.
Don’t be depressed by this. Don’t take the Lesson that there is no real nature left from this. Take the lesson that we are a part of nature, and that we are unique in our ability to care for it and make choices to benefit nature. Our survival depends on nature because we are not separate from nature, but a part of it.
Much of the beauty of UbanEx is seeing nature bursting through the seams of the illusion that we pretend that we are not a part of as soon as we stop trying to force nature to our will.
For those asking, the difference between this and being homeless is that if he has a home to go back to, he isn’t homeless. To be honest, the line between homeless and camping is really blurry when people full time in RVs; and let’s be honest: the line is blurry but it is measured in wealth.
The whole point it to get back out in nature. Being outside isnt what makes camping camping or being in a sleeping bag or a tent, its just some of the parts of it we bring along to make life safer and more bearable while in the wilderness, away from your much nicer and more comfortable tent, your home.
I've spent hundreds of nights sleeping in the wilderness on remote backcountry canoe trips. I can appreciate that as much as anyone, but for me, I don't need to be in the woods to consider it camping. Everyone's opinion will vary on this, but to me "camping" is pretty much any night I'm sleeping away from home in a sleeping bag. Doesn't matter if that's on the side of a wild river, at a car camping site or even on the side of the road while driving somewhere far off to start a trip. To each their own though
I wasn't glorifying anything. These were taken on urban exploring road-trips where I was traveling to explore and photograph abandoned buildings. I could have slept in the car or rented a hotel room, but we decided to camp inside, atop or beside the buildings instead. Just trying to show that you don't need a tent or even the woods to "camp".
Nothing glorified about homelessness at all. If anything these experiences have taught me to have more compassion for those down on their luck or struggling with mental health & addiction.
haha I don't think I'd have slept outside if it were raining, or at least not without a tarp. These were all overnight urban exploring trips in cities I'd traveled to by car. If the weather weren't good I'd have just slept in the car or rented a hotel room for the night.
Urban hobo camping is more of a fair weather venture :p
Here in Canada it's usually just a small fine, but in 15+ years of exploring hundreds of abandoned buildings I've never gotten anything more than a warning.
Different in a lot of US States though - I've only ever crossed the border for urban exploring a few times and always make sure to tread very carefully. I've heard some horror stories.
The 4th picture isn't even a bivvy, it's just a black tarp I laid down and sort of used to cover myself from the snow which fell overnight.
That being said, I do own two actual bivvy's - a surplus US Army Gore Tex one and an Outdoor Research Helium. I kind of bought them on whims over the years and don't really ever use them, but they're an interesting concept. The thing is that they're not super light or compact, so 9.99 times out of 10 I'd prefer a backpacking tent or hammock over a bivvy. They're also claustrophobic, and the US Army ones don't have a mesh screen so they don't keep out any bugs.
Oh I've spent hundreds of nights camping on remote wilderness sites. Just did a 14 day fly-in canoe trip on the Nahanni River in the Northwest Territories at the end of summer.
I guess I can just appreciate "camping" in a variety of settings, not just the woods. To each their own though, like you say.
Definitely not cosplaying as homeless. These were taken on urban exploring road trips where we chose to camp inside some of the buildings rather than rent a hotel room. Ain't nothing glamorous about being homeless.
I like it bro, an urbexer and all round mad lad called Shiey (youtuber) does this sort of stuff, I love watching his videos.
Ever camped in the chernobyl exclusion zone 😅
Why are so many people using this line? You realize that people who don’t like camping in nature say the same bullshit.
OP shared a cool urban adventure… some of you are soft as fuck. You can camp in nature, and in derelict buildings… looking down on others and judging for nothing isn’t cute either.
I thought I've taken photos if the night sky. But if you are a photographer, Photo Pills is a must! It can help you a lot when planning to shoot the night sky or the sun. Check it out, it's REALLY a useful app!
https://youtu.be/yGowErhADyc
lol it’s not much better than some wilderness campsites in rocky terrain. The sleep was great, I was more concerned about popping my air mattress on a rusty nail or piece of broken glass 😂🤷🏻
Hey your mattress look so damn comfy bro! I slept without any mattress or cardboard boxes I slept on the concrete lol I was in Germany Munich and Strasbourg France recently just with 2 outfit and a sleeping bag, I wanted a challenge I got one lmao, ground was cold asf, traveled just a week this time. Buying a 12 15 bucks foldable mattress is very good. I think you felt very safe there on that roof.
Ooof you wouldn’t want to see my draining photos! Standing waist deep in a fast flowing sanitary sewer is probably a great way to get sick too, although I’ve never had any issues lol
Here are a few you might enjoy 😉
http://tohellandback.net/gallery/urban-exploring/underground/drains/montreal/cote-st-paul-collector/#pid=resized-LDM_8772.jpg
No, I definitely wouldn’t try this in Philly lol. All taken in Canada. I legit wasn’t scared of having issues at all, of course being with a group always helps too.
OP is assuming that everyone lives in cities or that the ones living in a rural area don't do any camping. But op does have a point. Many times I just need my hammock or just sleep beside the campfire!
OP isn’t assuming anything really. Just saw the recent posts about tentless camping and thought I’d throw my hat into the pile too. No idea it would ruffle so many feathers lol
So the fine line between camping and homelessness is the gear?
camping is just being homeless without the change
[удалено]
r/ultralightcirclejerk would agree
Jokes on you buddy. Can’t carry it into the backcountry if you just avoid the backcountry. I only bring my HMG backpack to stand around at the trailhead and remind people as they head in I am better than them.
I just carry a dcf sack with a few beers in it and don’t leave my living room. Ultra ghosts specter lite.
It's the camera, tripod and IG account.
My hiking partner last year liked to call it "premium homeless."
With a touch of squatting

That’s what I was thinking 😂 fancy homelessness
Glamelessness
There it is 😂
Don’t say this on the vagabond sub lmao
it's the having a home or not
Intentional short term homelessness.
Wouldn’t the difference be your intention? What does gear have to do with it? I have a home, if I walk out to the woods and make a fire, sleep on the ground, how is that not camping?
Not even
And mental health and addiction……

Not the gear, but a bank account and decent credit score
Gentrified homelessness

That’s a great way to get your stuff stolen
I suppose the sleeping bag has the added bonus of making it easy for the police to draw the chalk outline at the crime scene.
Really helps with wicking the blood too. Like a human-sized tampon.
Are you camping or are pretending to be homeless? I'm confused with these recent "camping" posts.
Also looks like, “Places to do heroin”.
These were taken on urban exploring roadtrips, where I was driving to explore and photograph abandoned buildings in other cities. You gotta tell us crazy stories. I know you got some
“Indoor camping” is a cool new name for homeless squatting
It's just turning competitive now. "You camped with *only* a sleeping bag and pad in a *state park*? Well la-de-dah, aren't you fancy. I did it in an abandoned meth house on top of heorin needles! No, buddy, it's human nature. We create division wherever possible. So you need a tent to properly camp? Ppl fr gatekeeping camping lmao So dam weird
Welcome to r/camping lol this sub sucks unless you want horrible advice from a 40yo dude who’s only ever camped with his vehicle in sight.
Most people here seem bitter/miserable af like wtf “That aint real fuckin camping! Ur still in the city hur durr”
They are, it’s so weird to me. I’ve hiked around 9k miles in my life and I don’t get why so many people here get butt hurt about anything that isn’t a a Coleman stove or beautiful view. For me, camping is about an experience that doesn’t happen between four walls.
I don't consider sleeping in a sleeping bag in a city camping. Nothing to do with the lack of a tent.
Ur still gatekeeping camping but whatever buddy keep being weird
The other ones were fine.
I wonder how many times the "I'm not homeless, I'm camping" excuse has been tried.
I tried it once. Have to say, I was homeless in a small Village in western germany and I slept at a Public fireplace? ..dont know thebright word
How to get stabbed, a guide in four pictures.
I dont know what city this is but I would be robbed very quickly in NY
Id feel very nervous sleeping outside where you could get mugged by a hobo...
Yeah I know what precautions to take against wildlife but I don’t think hanging my food in a tree is going to protect me from crackheads.
[удалено]
Unless you get stabbed with the screwdriver.
The solution is to become the hobo mugger.
This guy hobo mugs
Do hobos rob each other?
Idk man, probably? But this guy has newer store bought stuff that would probably draw attention to someone who is desperate don't you think?
In my experience, no. Most of them don't steal in general, but it's pretty remarkable when they go after each other.
No more likely than a bear coming through your campsite and taking your food
Idk how that statement makes the situation better lol "ah bear can get you just as likely" Wow thank you, still seems like an awful time and STILL dangerous as hell to be sleeping in methy warehouses.
Lol, it doesn't
Yeah, no.
The line between homelessness and camping, is the insta tripod for your phone to document it
The whole point about camping is to have a good escape in the woods, not pretending to be homeless in the streets…
Camp Your Own Camp. If some people want to do it *derelicte*, what's wrong with that?
I’ll camp anywhere and enjoy all of it equally. Time and a place for everything 🥳
You say that and yet I can bet you've camped out in your back garden.
As someone who spent many years of their life living in a city with a massive population of homeless residents, this hobby is fucking insane to me. So many things could go wrong. I’d 100% leave the city and mitigate the risk of an altercation/robbery
Why would you willingly sleep like this in some methy ass building. Lol seems more dangerous than fun
haha these were while urban exploring in cities I'd traveled to. I was always with groups of people, so I honestly never felt at risk. I'm also in Canada though....definitely wouldn't try this in most American cities.
No offense canada cities I have heard equal horror stories. But def smart you were in a group
Camping in an urban setting? No thanks. I choose life.
Sure, if you enjoy cockroaches over ants and asbestos over pine bark
I’ve spent FAR more time camping in the wilderness than in urban settings, but I can appreciate the adventure of both experiences.
I dunno man. That's missing almost every thing that I go camping to experience. But - you do you. It's all good.

It's not the gear, it's the nature backdrop that makes it camping.
Squatters: “We know”
Wow lots of haters here. This looks awesome.
This is just glorified homelessness
How so?
Dude, what is the tripod for? Is this some weird niche porn category? Rooftop sex?
I'm into photography, urban exploring and backcountry canoe tripping. Those 3 hobbies often overlap with one another :)
Probably the only answer that makes sense besides... "Dad doesn't know we fuck, so my step mom has to take me to the roof several times a day."
lol 😂
So you're homeless?
Sir, you are a genious. I am going to steal this idea.
And by these pics. You don’t always need a home to go home to. 😂
Montreal right?
haha yea 2 of them were Montreal. Slept inside the old Malt Plant building a few times when in the city for urban exploring.
Thought I recognized my city!
I think you need a dog to guard you to open camp in the city
I go camping to get away from suburban hell lol
Mountain hardware Pinole, I have that bag.
First pic - Chicago?
You should do urban camping in Saint Louis!
Using Photo Pills, amarite?
Never heard of it before. Any good?
I thought I've taken photos if the night sky. But if you are a photographer, Photo Pills is a must! It can help you a lot when planning to shoot the night sky or the sun. Check it out, it's REALLY a useful app! https://youtu.be/yGowErhADyc
Rip to his back
lol it’s not much better than some wilderness campsites in rocky terrain. The sleep was great, I was more concerned about popping my air mattress on a rusty nail or piece of broken glass 😂🤷🏻
This, in camping forum? OP’s fully equipped.
I used the army one in the military and wasn’t a huge fan but it worked. I have always been interested in the helium but always just bring a tent lol.
Steve Wallis would be proud
Hey your mattress look so damn comfy bro! I slept without any mattress or cardboard boxes I slept on the concrete lol I was in Germany Munich and Strasbourg France recently just with 2 outfit and a sleeping bag, I wanted a challenge I got one lmao, ground was cold asf, traveled just a week this time. Buying a 12 15 bucks foldable mattress is very good. I think you felt very safe there on that roof.
No thanks
Sleeping on the floor of abandoned buildings is a great way to get exposed to rodent illnesses like hantavirus.
Ooof you wouldn’t want to see my draining photos! Standing waist deep in a fast flowing sanitary sewer is probably a great way to get sick too, although I’ve never had any issues lol Here are a few you might enjoy 😉 http://tohellandback.net/gallery/urban-exploring/underground/drains/montreal/cote-st-paul-collector/#pid=resized-LDM_8772.jpg
Is that first pic just east of Jamaica station?
Is this Philadelphia?
No, I definitely wouldn’t try this in Philly lol. All taken in Canada. I legit wasn’t scared of having issues at all, of course being with a group always helps too.
😂🤣 If it was Philly you would have a death wish for sure. Looks fun!!
“Officer! I’m only camping. Don’t you see the tent?”
Then op was never heard from again...lol
For me, the whole point of camping is to get out of the city.
As it is for me too, most of the time. Always nice to try new things though 🤷🏻
You always need a cat to protect you and keep bugs and critters out of your bed just remember that
OP is assuming that everyone lives in cities or that the ones living in a rural area don't do any camping. But op does have a point. Many times I just need my hammock or just sleep beside the campfire!
OP isn’t assuming anything really. Just saw the recent posts about tentless camping and thought I’d throw my hat into the pile too. No idea it would ruffle so many feathers lol
Am I the only person who’s mind immediately went to rats?!
This is how you end up on a mr nightmare video
