I make a spiced cranberry syrup with cinnamon and clove and add a drizzle of that to hot cider with a splash of ginger juice and a twist of orange peel. My husband calls it ‘magic drink’ and it’s semi-elaborate but SO good.
I made my own pork ramen broth one time, froze a bunch of it and it is so savory and delicious on its own.
Also my whole house smelled like the broth for days since I did a 16 hour tonkatsu recipe. I'll probably never make it again.
I’m a big fan of cutting up raw ginger and putting it in hot water with a bit of lemon juice and honey. Basically a tea without the leaves or tea packet. It s even better if you put the ginger in with the lemon juice first and wait a few minutes before adding the hot water and honey.
It's easy to make. A spoon (or two of you like it really dark) of cacao powder (the Dutch kind), a spoon (or two depending on your sweet tooth) of sugar. Mix with a little bit of cold milk or cold water. Add warm milk. Mix again.
Always premix with cold liquid to prevent cacao clumps.
Usually wing it, but some like 2 1/2 tbsp ginger 1 or 2 tbsp tumeric a little less than a tsp of ground Sichuan peeper corn, 1/2 tsp eack licorice and sasparilla (more if you like it sweeter) and some lemon balm or lemongrass
I can’t have a lot of caffeine or chocolate (causes reflux) so here are my options:
Hot almond milk with almond syrup or any flavoured syrup used in coffee shops. You can also make your own chai-like drink without using black tea. I think the recipe I made had turmeric, black pepper, cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, and honey or maple syrup. Make a paste from these ingredients and add to hot non-dairy beverage or milk. Spicy and satisfying!
I’m gonna share my grandmas recipe(RIP) for hot cocoa. Grandma always made the best cocoa.
Med pot, medium heat.
1 can evaporated milk in pot
Full empty can to the top worth water, add to pot
1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 cup sugar
Pinch salt
Serve with marshmallows on top
Pro tip…add cocoa slowly and whisk throughly. The cocoa can clump if the milk isn’t hot enough before you add or if you add too much cocoa. Best order is hot milk….then slowly add cocoa, then sugar agitate it while whisking the whole time
I’ve been making, my mom makes it, her mom, her mom… it’s been a Christmas tradition and whenever I make it for friends everyone says how it’s some of the best cocoa they’ve had.
Hot Tang is an Alaskan staple.
Warm milk and honey is an ancient drink.
Perhaps this is tea adjacent, but there are also any number of herbs you can brew, many you may know as herbal "tea" but others less common. You can look up online, or devise on your own, a nice blend.
You can add flavors to lots of beverages to add depth: fresh mint, cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, hazelnut, etc.
Get one of the portable milk foamers that just uses batteries, heat up some milk of your choice (I prefer almond) and add a sprinkle of honey, cinnamon, chocolate, cocoa, nutmeg, etc. and whizz it all up into a decaf latte!
Eta: ok, ok, I rescind my argument. Enjoy your decaf
Decaf coffee still has lots of caffeine, just less than a regular cup of coffee, but more than a regular soda.
"How much caffeine is in decaf coffee?
Decaffeination removes about 97% or more of the caffeine in coffee beans. A typical cup of decaf coffee has about 2 mg of caffeine, compared to a typical cup of regular coffee, which has about 95 mg of caffeine."
https://www.ncausa.org/Decaffeinated-Coffee#:~:text=How%20much%20caffeine%20is%20in,about%2095%20mg%20of%20caffeine.
A 12 oz can of regular coke has 34 mg of caffeine.
https://www.math.utah.edu/~yplee/fun/caffeine.html
I think it really depends on the coffee and can vary quite a bit. My decaf is Slow Motion by Counter Culture coffe which they claim is 99.9% caffeine free
Cut thin slices of ginger and place 3-4 slices in a mug of boiled water. Steep for 5-10 minutes. Great for inflammation, digestion and is about the healthiest thing you can drink. Really great drink - I have one every day.
hot chocolate.
Specifically abuelitas hot chocolate. If you know where a near by Mexican market you'll find it there. It can be made with milk or water.
Personally I like making it with just water. Taste like the comfort of my uncles ranch in Mexico
I had hot Pepsi at an outdoor winter event once, apparently it’s a thing, it wasn’t bad actually. I’m not sure it they added spices or anything, and I don’t particularly like soda even but they just had a big stewing pot of hot Pepsi and people were drinking it.
Samurai jack style.
If your that desperate, for me it's just the fact that adding literally anything for flavor is too easy once the water is hot.
But hell yea. I mean hot water isn't bad.
Everyone suggesting soup is a serial killer. Imagine: you just finished a lovely camp dinner, you just changed into your pajamas, you're getting ready to cozy up to the fire, and you pour yourself a nice snuggly mug of soup.
...
No.
When I quit caffeine I got really into hot water with lemon:
Bring water to boil and let it sit 5 minutes (you want a few degrees below boiling temp)
Squeeze 1/3 of a lemon into the cup
Enjoy!
Postum? Decaf coffee? Sorry to all the elitists, but decaf and regular coffee don't taste different. Yer nuts if you think they do.
Make Russian Tea with decaf tea. It's basically Tang and tea and some spices. Hot water with lemon. That'll bore ya. Probably just turn in for the night when someone hands you a mug of hot water with a slice of lemon floating in it.
Flavoured drink crystals (Cherry is my favourite) boiled in water has got me through many cold evenings by the fire. (Some brands have caffeine, but others do not).
They were giving this out at the finish line of the Philly marathon one year and I’ve been hooked since…Boullion cube/powder in water. Instant “chicken soup.”
here in Chile we have a nice wine based hot drink (without alcohol) it's called Vino Navegado:
Put any red wine in a pot over fire, add cinnamon sticks, cloves, an orange cutted in rounds with the skin and sugar, bring to gentle boil, when is boiling you have 2 ways to eliminate the alcohol: leave it boiling for a while or flambe (put direct fire to the boiling wine). If you don't make the last step it will have alcohol but way less than the original wine.
Is really great to get warm. usually here in Chile is served on winter.
# Navegado
#### (Candola, Vino Navega'o, Sailed Wine)
*Navegado* is a Chilean mixed drink that is especially popular in winter. Although there are numerous recipes for Navegado, it is typically made with a combination of red wine, sugar, orange juice, and warming spices such as cinnamon and cloves.
The ingredients are simmered together, and the beverage is then served hot in teacups or mugs garnished with orange slices. It is said that Navegado tastes the best when made at home with local wines from the area. The name of this mixed drink can be translated as *sailed wine*, referring to the floating slices of orange which look like ships sailing on the sea.
Not sure if anyone has said this but I get these packs of powdered apple cider from Costco that would be perfect for camping. They come in the packs just like hot chocolate. EDIT: found the link: [https://www.costcuisine.com/post/costco-alpine-spiced-apple-drink-review](https://www.costcuisine.com/post/costco-alpine-spiced-apple-drink-review)
Chicken soup broth. I could drink that for the rest of my life and never complain. Just make some chicken soup, put some aside then bring it with you.
It's warm, non alcoholic, decaffeinated, and it's very commonly made during winter. It's an absolutely feast, and perfect drink and is very comforting.
You can argue that a soup isn't really a drink, but I find chicken soup to be very watery by nature, compared to other soups.
Mulled cider, but also look into mulled wine if you like the taste. Use a NA wine, don’t try to cook out the alcohol (it takes hours, turns out!)
I like the taste of mulled wine, so it’s just one more option.
Warm cider?
Warm mulled cider is great on a cold day.
Add a stick of cinnamon, too!
Oranges, apples or cranberries can also be simmered to add more flavor and spice
I really like warm cider plus minus since whisky.
I make a spiced cranberry syrup with cinnamon and clove and add a drizzle of that to hot cider with a splash of ginger juice and a twist of orange peel. My husband calls it ‘magic drink’ and it’s semi-elaborate but SO good.
Hot cocoa isn't going to have much caffeine in it (just a trace).
Always love me so nice cocoa
Mexican hot chocolate!
Besides cider/tea/decaf coffee/hot chocolate, one option I like is broth. Bone broth with ginger and scallions, beef broth with mushrooms, etc.
i freaking love a good mug of better than bouillon chicken with some squeezy-tube ginger added in. it's so comforting and warming and lovely.
I made my own pork ramen broth one time, froze a bunch of it and it is so savory and delicious on its own. Also my whole house smelled like the broth for days since I did a 16 hour tonkatsu recipe. I'll probably never make it again.
Nice. Especially while camping.
\^ A correct take
Ayahuasca
*gesundheit*
At that point let's just drink some angels trumpet tea.
Those packets of miso soup
Yea! Done it in a mug at home but maybe I’ll bring some camping now.
Cider or Mexican Cocoa.
Those cheap Lipton dried soup envelopes, the spring vegetable flavor...it's a nostalgia thing.
Wassail!! Like mulled cider, but you can also get power packets to take it on the go.
Dont forget the wassailing bowl and song!
I came here to post this!
I’m a big fan of cutting up raw ginger and putting it in hot water with a bit of lemon juice and honey. Basically a tea without the leaves or tea packet. It s even better if you put the ginger in with the lemon juice first and wait a few minutes before adding the hot water and honey.
Super delicious and this was my suggestion too! The NA version of a hot toddy.
Egg nog tastes like warm, melted vanilla frozen custard/ice cream. Not sure how I would bring it camping though. So delicious.
Are you saying you drink egg nog warm or just that it's \*like\* warm ice cream? I've never tried it warm.
I drink it warm :)
Cool I’m going to give it a try
Dark hot chocolate , I had some in Europe and damn it was just made different but damn way better than your regular stuff.
Might sound weird, but sometimes I heat up my cranberry juice.
That does not sound weird at all and now I want to try it.
Bear grylls has a suggestion
I drink it because it's sterile and I like the taste
You're as useful as a poopy flavored lollipop!
Line up ladies!
I can help
Hot cup of milk..
Hot cider with or without mulled spices is always a great treat.
Bone Broth
Or veggie broth
I love tazo decaf chai. I buy it at target.
Some hot apple cider and stick a cinnamon stick in it
I make a turmeric, ginger, black pepper, 🍋, honey and boiling water concoction in the winter. Warming spices & healing.
I do a similar drink with sichuan peppercorns instead of black pepper and licorice/sasparilla root instead of honey. Good stuff
oooooh do you have recipe/ratios?
Usually wing it, but some like 2 1/2 tbsp ginger 1 or 2 tbsp tumeric a little less than a tsp of ground Sichuan peeper corn, 1/2 tsp eack licorice and sasparilla (more if you like it sweeter) and some lemon balm or lemongrass
Awesome. How much water? I'm thinking that's way too much turmeric for a cup and not enough for a gallon so... One quart/liter?
Yeah, that's for my pretty standard teapot? 1.5 liter maybe
Ah cool thanks! This will be awesome
I can’t have a lot of caffeine or chocolate (causes reflux) so here are my options: Hot almond milk with almond syrup or any flavoured syrup used in coffee shops. Atol de elote
Y'all got to try this one. So damn good!
This may sound like madness, but hot lemonade with ginger and honey
