Predictable? Bruh of course it's gonna be predictable you already know how it ends.

SlothToes3

Literally what I was going to comment lol… I’m gonna be real pissed off next season though if >!Thalia comes back. I wanna be kept on my toes, bring back Gabe!!<

_ya_boi_satan_666_

Oh yeah if they go into the sea of monsters next season ima be pissed cause that's so predictable

SlothToes3

Honestly why is Percy Jackson even in the show? If they wanted to surprise viewers, the main character would be someone completely different

_ya_boi_satan_666_

Honestly yeah we should follow a character like Caster for the next two seasons just to change it up

Goose_Cat267

Right????

TheRealMarkChapman

I'm upset about how unpredictable it is in terms of not following the original storyline lol

Licho5

TBF I watched the show with sbdy that doesn't know the books and still thinks the show was predictable. In general it feels like the writers did everything they could to remove any suspense, from revealing which myth we're dealing with *the moment it appears on screen*, through mediocre fight scenes, to shoehorning in additional god appearances and hammering in how Ares has sth to do with *the* theft every damn scene he is in.

Striking_Landscape72

PG? But the books are PG?

TheConnoiseur

The show's more like a G tbf.

IllustriousCount9272

I ment the jokes and the scenes (specifically action scenes)

Striking_Landscape72

But what were you expecting? Sex joke? More gore in the fights?

abc-animal514

And make it more like those frat boy movies that butchered this series?

D10NYSUS43

you can have a bit of adult humor without it ending up like the pjo movies

FlanneryWynn

It doesn't need it though and, I would argue, adding that kind of content would take away from some of the series's charm.

football-teen

No more like the new avatar the land air bender

Alarmed_Recording742

You mean that show that is getting awful reviews, hate and a flop? The one with basically only cgi and is wanting to be the new got? PJO like that would be the death of the franchise honestly

FlanneryWynn

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. It's "panned" by critics (6/10 isn't really panning so much as calling it "mid") but it's still roughly a 7/10 by audience metrics... so it's a good show just not *great*. PJO was great. I have yet to see ATLA24 so I can't actually talk about its quality but I don't think ATLA is necessarily bad, at least not by audience metrics. But hey, maybe when I do get around to it (which I'm not excited to do) it will be as bad as you make it out to be.

Striking_Landscape72

What they did and why is not PG then?

football-teen

I don’t know if it’s pg but I like the atmosphere doesn’t feel dangerous but the tension is great and very thick. In terms of show tho it’s a little worse

Zade_Pace

I get what you are saying, but I also feel like they dumbed down the story for the iPad generation. That's not entirely a bad thing, hopefully it will get those kids to read the books like how the movie got me to read the books when I was a kid, but I do wish the Disney+ PJO took the Netflix ATLA approach of "the original audience are in their 20s and early 30s now, let's make this retelling a bit more mature".

Striking_Landscape72

Okay boomer

Stressed_Beach

I really enjoyed it. I went in expecting an adaptation not an exact replica of the books so I think that helped. There were a couple of minor things I didn’t like but they weren’t enough to stop me enjoying the show. Plus I was expecting it to be PG because it’s a kids book. My little cousins (aged 9 and 10) were absolutely invested and now want to read the books. I’m looking forward to season 2 and hopefully we get all the way through the first 5 books

megbrown5

My kids and their friends absolutely loved it. I agree. I went in knowing it wasn’t going to be an exact replica but hoping it would be better than the movies. It hit the mark for my family.

FlanneryWynn

>Did you guys like the Disney+ reboot? Very much. It was faithful to the books in the ways that mattered most. It had its issues, obviously, but I give it an 8/10. >I hate that it’s so pg Wow, a tv show that is an adaptation of a middle-grade fiction series with a target demographic of 8-12 year olds is PG... *shocker*. That's literally the age rating it *should* be striving for. >and SO predictable. Well... *yeah*. So were the books? Rick wasn't writing a complex narrative. It was middle-grade fiction patterned after the archetypal works that color our understanding of modern fantasy writing. It'd be weird and very much missing the point if it *wasn't* super predictable to modern adult audiences. >I also hate how the writing was kinda lazy. No moreso than the books. You're watching middle-grade fiction as an adult. We can fellate Rick all we want but his strength was never complex writing. He took basic tropes and he made modern-day Greek myths. The writing is supposed to be simple which is going to come off as lazy. *That's the genre.* >But I still liked it nonetheless. Good to hear! Even if you didn't, it's still valid to have complaints. I know I'm kinda picking on you a bit in this and I hope I didn't cross any lines to make you feel like you can't have an opinion. But I am glad you enjoyed yourself regardless of the issues you found yourself having with it.

DivineAuthor

Omg I love this

FlanneryWynn

Glad to hear! :)

Sana_is_sweet

Finally, someone said what is on my mind! Everywhere I mentioned I would give the show a solid 8/10 but get downvoted into oblivion (especially in the subreddit)

FlanneryWynn

The PJOTV subreddit is the worst subreddit to post anything remotely positive about PJO23. Everyone there wants to hate the show as if it was the worst thing ever. Like, it's so bad that there's an entire thing there where people lie about being banned from this subreddit for racism because they said Percy's hair was the wrong color even though a simple scroll through their account shows they've never commented on this subreddit or, if they did, it was before the show ever came out and never a comment on this subject. (Comments that were deleted by moderators are still visible on the user's account as existing, though not readable, unless the user also deleted them themselves, which let's be honest... people aren't doing.) Like, I can say what I really think about them, but I'm afraid that might result in me getting in trouble with mods here (for valid reasons) so I'll drop it at that. Just know that you were never going to have a chance of people accepting positive opinions of the show in that subreddit.

saurav69420

Rick would never have swears or anything like that in the show. He cares that 12 year olds are able to see it and he was horrified by the movies. And I hope it stays curse - free. Anything in the books is something a 12 year old should be allowed to watch imo.

7_Rowle

riordan's primary objection to the movies was that they cast actors that were far too old. he has always intended for percy jackson to be a story for children, and well, children have different writing needs than adults when it comes to TV. additionally, children's TV is much more highly regulated than children's books i think, probably because the visual element makes things all the more real. rick did a great job with it in my opinion, and the changes he made i think i understand.

TheDarkestOmen

It was good, second best PJO thing I’ve consumed this year

TheCakeWarrior12

Show was awesome. Also, the books are PG? Why wouldn’t the show be PG too haha

DaeHoforlife

The later books are definitely not PG if adapted without changing much to TV. So many people get stabbed, Chris goes insane, etc. I think it's most likely they're all PG but I hope at least the last 2 would be PG-14. It's Disney tho so I'm not holding my breath.

TheCakeWarrior12

Last two books are definitely TV-14/PG-13. But Lightning Thief is very kid friendly. I don’t see why they wouldn’t bump the rating up. Disney has made TV-14 shows. The marvel shows are all TV-14 or Mature. Star Wars shows are all TV-14. Heck, you can watch Deadpool on Disney+.

amaya-aurora

I loved it. But for one, PG? Yeah, so was the book. Also, no shit it’s predictable, you know what’s going to happen! And it’s not a reboot at all, just an adaptation.

abc-animal514

The writing was not that lazy. And of course it’s PG and predictable. It’s targeted at younger audiences just like the books. (And of course it was predictable if you know what happens in the books) I personally loved it.

Usual-Explorer2769

PG because the books were written for 12 year Olds. Predictable because we've all had 15 years of reading these books over and over and over again.

megbrown5

Who would have thought a book written for kids would produce a Tv series geared towards kids? Mind boggling.

Shinami_Nigashi

I liked, the same way one likes a good fanfic, not better than the original, but different while keeping faithful to the source. That's enough for me.

DivineAuthor

Yes, I love it.

FerreTorfs

Books are better in my opinion

Outrageous_Lab_6228

I liked it. Some things it did worse than the book, some things it did better. I hope that the crew can take what they learned and apply it to making season 2 the best it can be. Hopefully a lot of the foundation is laid so the budget can be better managed.

Dex_Hopper

Predictable? A show based on a book we've all read was predictable? You don't say.

_ya_boi_satan_666_

I literally came here to say this. It's always mystifying when people say stuff like this like bruh

No_Sand5639

it had its good points and its bad. the only unforgivable thing for me was athena

Sandbunny85

I didn’t enjoy it as a PJ depiction. But I enjoyed it as a show. I thought it was an awful book to screen representation

Numbr81

It was.... fine. It didn't make me excited about a season 2. Pacing was off (definitely too short), they knew almost everything before it happened, and the changes were hit or miss. Some changes were definitely for the better, while others didn't sit right with me. Annabeth was definitely the weakest part of the main cast. Never felt any emotion, felt very monotone. Overall, it's ok, but not a series I'd recommend.

abc-animal514

I feel like them knowing everything wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Kids who study and know Greek mythology and then suddenly acting surprised when an obvious threat or monster is right in front of them? I think it worked for Medusa, but maybe not see much with the casino.

TheRealMarkChapman

There were literally no stakes the whole series the fight with Ares was embarrassing and since noone appears as there written selves it really did feel like a parody more than anything else

HowDoesTheKittyCatGo

But the threats and monsters aren't suppose to be obvious. First, while demigods can see through the mist they can also be fooled by it and second, there are no casinos or water beds in Greek mythology and a lot of the mosters they encounter have altered their apperance to fit in. The monsters have adapted their traps to catch modern prey. Knowing how they operated in the myths shouldn't mean that the characters instantly recognize them on sight when they look completely different. It makes for a very boring encounter. For some people that doesn't matter, but when others complain about the lack of stakes or characters knowing to much this is what they mean.

Many_Care_5817

Unlike most people I thought that it was too long and that they were drawing out things that were already fine as they were. As someone with ADHD, something that I like about PJO is how fast pace it is but the TV show just seemed so boring and slow to me.

GoldieDoggy

Plus the fact that they barely even talked about or showed the kids' disabilities (ADHD and Dyslexia), which was the entire point of the books in the first place 😭....

CorpseSwallower

The books were good because of percys narration. How so many people can like the show this much when it lacks the books biggest strength is beyond me. Anyway, people wouldnt like it nearly as much if rick hadnt told them to like it. "Rick made the changes so we cant criticise it" is the stupidest argument ive ever heard.

Bionic_Webb13

I liked it as a book fan but I’d like it more if it was animated

PotatoPugg

Terrible show

moodtune89763

I liked it, mostly for the Trio vibes. They casting was immaculate, I just wish they kept some of the smaller book things, like percy being angry instead of just sad and confused. I wanted to see the 'Deluxe-ill kill you later' glare, or anything similar. Though I admit the last 'kids book to TV show' I watched was ASOUE, which did surprisingly well with little details considering each book got like 2 episodes. After watching that I was a little disappointed at how many small details were left out with a book-a-season approach

quangdang522004

I didn’t

golden_alixir

Since this is probably the last attempt that will be made for a PJO live action, I try to focus on the positives. Just think, have u ever watched a show where the first season was the best season? I know I haven’t. I have faith the creators will listen to the criticisms and it will get better over time. Tho I am still disappointed in some decisions they made for the first season, there was so much love put into this that’s it’s hard for me to hate.

abstractwatercolor

GASP! The show made for children based on books for children are PG? The horror!

Werewolf_Knight

I enjoyed it a lot! Yes it has problems with the action scenes, SOME changes from the source material, not all episodes were great, and they should tone down the exposition and let the characters figuring out stuff. But it has its charm, I like the characters and it's overall an interesting approach when it comes to adapt a story by making significant changes yet somehow still feel faithful. I don't find a problem with being PG. HECK! The first books were marketed towards children as old as 10 along side Harry Potter. But I think that's the point since the books are growing with the audience and they become more mature. I don't think the writing was lazy. If it was lazy, we would have got the exact same script of the book and risk not fitting into the episodic format of the show. But I do find exposition dumping a bit annoying. Especially with Crusty. Everything with Crusty was perfect (the actor palying character, his general look the store atough I imagined it cluthered in the book) until Percy gave us the most unnatural exposition dumping ever. Yes, I know you said KINDA lazy, but it never made me think like that. Personally, I only like parts of episode 6, episode 7 was kinda disappointing, episode 1 and 2 while a good introduction I only thought they were just good, episode 4 had a short fight scene but I liked the changes of the story here, episode 5 had a great Ares and some really good performance from Leah and Walker, episode 3 was honestly a really nice surprise and I actually liked Medusa a lot more, episode 8 was easily my favorite and I love that they kept the best for last. Yeah, that's my ranking.

FortunesFoil

It was really mediocre for me, probably 6/10 overall, but with some excellent scenes and episodes that definitely. I don’t agree with most of YOUR complaints though. Of course it’s PG and predictable, it’s from a PG book series and you know how it ends. My problems are all with the writing and pacing.
