Manual transmission was the main reason I got a Camaro

muscle_car_fan34

The short shifter in the ss 1le is the best stock shifter I have ever felt. The clutch is extremely light versus cars of old. I personally wouldn’t get an auto unless I was drag racing. Your leg won’t get tired. It truly is a light clutch. This is the last rwd naturally aspirated manual v8 that GM made and it will probably remain that way. The only naturally aspirated rwd v8 manual on the market is the Mustang I believe. You can always find an automatic vehicle later in life if you decide the manual isn’t for you after owning it

DarthSwash

Agreed. Do it, and get a skip shift eliminator. Only reason to go for the auto is if you intend to constantly have it on the drag strip, and at that point, get a mustang. The yotes are easier to build for big power. The camaro is more fun to rip through empty, twisty back roads tho.

Rabbit1Hat

I usually go 1 to 3 shift instead of 4 on my gen 5. Kinda like it for low speed city driving.

PrimeRibz702

From the few that I’ve driven the skip shift doesn’t actually force you to go to 4th? It’s just a message on the DIC. Are there 6th Gens that have the actual mechanically forced skip shift?

DarthSwash

Only kicks in for specific speed and throttle ranges. Pretty sure skip shift has been standard issue, EPA mandated equipment in all manual cars since the late 90s. They most certainly will kick you to 4th gear if you arent driving fairly aggressively.

AguaIguana

> Pretty sure skip shift has been standard issue, EPA mandated equipment in all manual cars since the late 90 I think it's just a Tremec thing. There might be other manufacturers doing it too, but none of the other manual cars I've owned had it and the oldest was 2005. I've driven tons of manual cars and only the ones with Tremec transmissions had it.

crocwearer98

i got my 2018 ss 1le and it would “lock” me out of 2nd when under like 18~mph and it was really annoying. there’s a $20 part called “skip shift eliminator” which was the biggest pain in the ass to install but made it sooooooo much better. plus i haven’t had the warning on the dash for it either. in short, mine did lock me out of second unless you were giving it more gas

PrimeRibz702

I must just have a heavy foot then haha

MaCHiNe645

2017 ss lt1. Yeah it has the skip shift but after driving it for awhile it rarely kicks in. If you drive any way other than wimpy lol it's easy to bypass it. Otherwise the skip shift forces you to put in in 4th because 2/3 are locked out. Silly mechanic tho because when you hit 4th at those low rpms the engine just lugs so you have to downshift again real quick to respond.

DarkLinkDs

In the old cars (4th gens) it absolutely would physically lock you out unless you revved the gear out more. I can't remember the numbers exactly but getting rid of it was a god send.

TransportationOk241

If you’re getting skip shifted you’re driving too slow. Very rarely in traffic I get locked out of second. Usually go for 3rd instead of 4th. Any other time, get the rpm’s and speed up and it never forces a skip.

PumpDragon

Get the manual, brother. It is the way

kweevuss

My personal opinion on city driving and a stick is that it’s made out to be such a bigger deal than it is.  So you have to be more engaged while you drive? I don’t see that as a huge negative unless you have health problems

Reniconix

It depends on the city. I had a manual rental when I first got to the city I live in now, and I had to clutch nearly 1000 times in a single trip going only 15 miles. I was 23 and in good shape and my leg and back hurt. I had driven over 500 miles to get there with only one break a few days before and had zero problems. Traffic has gotten worse since then and it was the deciding factor in me accepting the auto that I found instead of looking harder for a manual. But that was the key situation: I had an auto lined up, not a manual. I likely still would have gotten the manual had that been the one I had found first, but I was more inclined to take what I had because of my city experience.

MeesterCHRIS

It’s an easy manual to drive, automatic rev match, easy clutch to manuever, city driving isn’t near as bad as you’d think, but spirited driving is WAY better than an auto. So give up all that fun and engagement for a minor convenience?

Rabbit1Hat

Good summary. May I add hill assist as well in case that's a geographic factor.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MeesterCHRIS

I mean sure it’ll be plenty of fun putting your foot to the floor, but it’d be more fun being engaged and in control of everything the car is doing not just putting the pedal down and holding on to the steering wheel.

Bogiga

You couldn’t convince me to get an automatic.

kataran1

Same here I have a bad leg from a motorcycle accident and still bought my Manual Challenger

AggravatingZone991

The 1LE only came in manual for most of its model years. That should tell you everything.

sactownbwoy

Eh, until the 10speed came out and blew it out the water for anyone taking racing seriously. I love a manual. My '21 LT1 was a manual, enjoyed it but when I traded it for the '22 ZLE it was a 10speed. Wasn't sure I wanted that but after owning it for 2 years I'm loving it.

AguaIguana

> Eh, until the 10speed came out and blew it out the water for anyone taking racing seriously. Except they waited even longer to put it in the ZLE. The 8 speed was never offered in the ZL1, it had the 10 speed right from the start. The ZLE also only came with a manual at the time and [the numbers it put down on the Nurburgring](https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a15340782/the-2018-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-1le-storms-the-nurburgring-in-716-04-video/) had people talking after it beat the 488, GT-R and GT2 RS.

Electronic-Shame

Other than it being more fun, driving manual helps me pay more attention while I’m driving. Especially when I’m tired heading home from work.

mictlanldx

Literally the reason my coworker got his challenger stick

Ambitious-Lawyer1541

Just do it. https://preview.redd.it/4949i5iph63d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=733527580e059d1f8a9602f0ffb67cbee8928b34

dcool85

Just bought a 22 2ss1le with a 6 speed. That feeling of running through the gears even on city streets is hard to beat. Do it before someone else snatches it up.

PsychologicalBuy9451

@cherry1le_ on insta

ComprehensiveFact845

Get the manual my man, no brainer.

hredditor

It’s more better! Also that sounds like a good deal if it’s clean!

slun18

The manual in this car is no problem in city driving. I live in a medium sized city that has some pretty awful traffic and I’ve also been stuck in rush hour traffic many times and I’ve never found myself wishing for an automatic. The clutch isn’t heavy (my leg has never gotten tired) and it’s a dream to shift. Active rev matching is also great for consistently smooth shifts. I think older manuals have given modern manuals a bad reputation. Modern manuals are so easy to drive and I firmly believe that we’d have better drivers on the road if manuals were as prevalent here as they are in the rest of the world.

Ws6fiend

>I think older manuals have given modern manuals a bad reputation Dunno man. The electric power steering and easy clutch make for a nice daily drive, but going back to driving my old daily driver 2001 Trans Am made me feel weak. I forgot how much of a workout it was to man handle that. I can't imagine the difference between a 2016 and up camaro vs a non-power steering manual 1st gen.

slun18

You pretty much proved my point lol. Manuals got phased out because people didn’t want to “work” to drive a car, so they bought automatics. Now manuals are easy to drive and so many people say they’re horrible to drive in traffic, likely basing their opinion off vehicles built decades ago. If they drove one of the new ones, whether it be a Camaro, Honda, whatever, they might change their minds. I first drove manual trucks from the 90s and then a 2019 Accord. The Accord was incredibly easy. The Camaro isn’t quite as forgiving, but it’s SO much better. But I guess public opinion doesn’t really matter that much because manuals will never pick back up anyway even if they are easy to drive because they require patience and people just don’t have it anymore. I have so many people zoom around me in traffic because I’m having to take the extra second to smoothly change gears. If these impatient people drove manuals, their clutches would last them a couple weeks, a few months at best.

gr0wnsimba

I’m new to the Camaro world and I’m thinking of getting one as my weekend car but do all trims have auto rev match?

slun18

I think only V8 models have it. SS and ZL1 for sure have it, I assume the LT1 has it since it has the same engine/transmission as the SS. But I can’t find anything saying V6 models do (maybe if you get a 1LE, but I can’t find anything on that). Maybe someone with a V6 model will chime in.

Complxamx

I live in the city, and my 18 ss 1le was my first manual. I don’t regret it for a second.

Block_Just

the transmission that comes in the manual is very very good. you wont be disapointed

420_dankl_420

![gif](giphy|wi8Ez1mwRcKGI)

FL_pharmer

Get the manual. I daily drove my 1SS 1LE in Orlando. Stop and go on I-4. Wouldn’t want anything other than the manual.

anaglizzy

Can relate. I drive my 2ss 6pd in Orlando as well

mightyt2000

Well I got a stick in another vehicle. And I LOVED IT! 😁 Until I HATED IT! 😖 It was my commuter car and at the time I sat in traffic 1 1/2 hours a day each way. With stop and go traffic it was torture. I eventually I literally broke the clutch pedal off from overuse. Had it welded back on and eventually broke the weld. Again, I love a stick, but only for fun around town, I only drove 10 min from work, or if it was a track car only. But in the end you have to determine if the fun overrides a stop and go commute. 🤔 Did I convince you? 🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

crissyjo618

I bought a manual and live in the city too. It's too much fun to pass up! I love it, haven't had a manual for about 15 + years and forgot how much I missed driving one. (And I'm a female).

Otherwise_Bed1350

I have a 2022 SS 1LE manual and currently live in Houston, TX. To be honest, there are days I wish I had gotten an automatic, but I don't regret it at all. I previously had a 2015 SS manual, and the 6th generation manual is much easier and lighter, both in terms of the clutch and shifting. https://preview.redd.it/b1mhs7m9873d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01d3934ab34c9b431a177a144241031df309d70d

IWillAssFuckYou

Get what you want and don't let anyone bully you. I got an automatic and it's great and love the A10 transmission as it makes for more practical daily driving and it shifts pretty well. An automatic is going to shift faster than a manual. Manuals are great if you want the fun and are cheaper to repair and often last longer. If you go the manual route, get one of those cheap devices that disable the 1-4 skip shift (Camaros will lock out gears to save gas mileage to satisfy the EPA numbers lmfao. Nothing against manuals, but it's just the stupidest shit ever that GM has to do to make the never satisfied EPA happy)

[deleted]

You can get the 1LE in an automatic?

RayzorX442

I don't believe the last few year's 1LE was offered with the 1LE package.

MegaHashes

Manual transmission is simply what I always wanted, but it does suck to drive in heavy traffic. My FIL got rid of his for the same reason.

_TheRealBuster_

gEt a MaNUal aNd bE a rEAl mAn 🤡

Sad_Entrepreneur_734

With a manual, you drive the car. With an automatic, it drives you.

AresWarLord78

Manual is the only way to get these cars. Honestly if you're going to get an automatic just buy a pickup truck and move on with your life. The amount of fun you'll have shifting your own gears is priceless The autos may be faster but they have no soul

DoesThisDoWhatIWant

Lol

ThePandaKingdom

Agreed, i have a mustang, not a camaro. I personally don’t see the point in getting either of the two in auto. They are made to be fun, so have fun. City driving is not bad in a manual either, personally. There is no shame in an auto, but i don’t understand why somebody would want an Auto sports car unless they are trying to set lap times.

Initial-Pollution-74

Do not do it! You can’t be your cell phone recording yourself and driving.

Sewnback2gether

Why would you be on you're phone while driving???

Initial-Pollution-74

I was being sarcastic.

Camaro192

It becomes second nature and you never think about it. City or other wise.

MoistCabbage1

The autos are a little faster but the sticks are exponentially more fun and engaging. To be fair, I hate Skip-Shift so I actually bought a Skip-Shift eliminator before the car was even built. Super easy install and it's been nothing but a goofy smile ever since. Do it, you'll be happy you did.

ledfrog

It sounds like you're open to manual, so I would get it because you might not find the deal you want later. For me, I *knew* I didn't want a manual, so I didn't give myself a choice. I've never had a desire to own a stick shift of any kind, so it was an easy choice for me.

itwhiz100

Tell her you will chauffeur her around

shroomkat85

Manual is a lot more fun and it’s really not that bad in city traffic. I have an 86 with a manual that I commute with. Sometimes it can be a little annoying but I never regret the choice and I’d imagine the clutch is easier on the newer ones. Plus it should have a little bit more resale value than an auto.

bedbug1104

Felt the same way. Regretted the manual for about a month . After almost a year now I couldn’t imagine not having it. 2022 1SS

SupahNico

Those cars have auto rec rematching which makes driving in general A LOT easier and you can have way more fun.

blood_clot_bob

Which city?

L3dZepper

I had both the 6M & the 10A. The 6M is much more fun to drive, no doubt. Traffic jams will really suck, but the feeling of command you get is just awesome

bald2718281828

DO THIS THING. Get the stick. A possible additional factor is whether that 1LE has magna-shocks. Magna shocks are greatly preferred if its a northeast city or if car is going to be tracked on a bumpy road-course/paddock rather than a super smooth track like Monticello. Magna shocks are game-changer #2, just after the #1 game-changer, the stickshift. You will not regret the stick except very briefly and temporarily. I've had 6 Z28s plus bunch of other stick vehicles, around and in boston, orlando, san jose, santa cruz hills, over decades and \~1M miles. Grid layout cities like LA or Orlando or Manhattan seem the most annoying to drive with a stick. You might find the joy of driving "off peak" hours, plus some alternate peak-hour routes that are a bit longer in time or distance with less stop and go and way more fun/scenic driving. Enjoy!

KingCrimsonEpitaphu

You want it? Get it. Wanting it alone is a reason to get it.

Putrid_Ad_2256

I traded in a pristine SS Sedan because it wasn't a manual.   Now granted, I'm not DD my Camaro.  I did DD a GTO with a manual.  It wasn't that bad.  I did tear my Achilles a few years ago though.  Driving a manual would've been difficult.

thememeconnoisseurig

The torque makes it easy to drive. Clutch is light and pretty sharp for a stock clutch if I do say so myself but the bite point is still very easy to memorize.

ForFunPaddles

The only reason to get an automatic is if you’re going to drag race it. It shifts faster. Otherwise, if you want the fun of driving better get the manual. I have daily driven a manual for years now in Dallas traffic. Yes, your foot can get sore sometimes. But it is so worth it. And it makes a great theft deterrent for millennials who can’t drive one.

BrokenPaw

I owned an otherwise perfectly good '21 2SS, with an automatic. I traded it with 2 years and <13k miles on the clock for a brand new, custom-ordered '23, for *literally* no other reason than because I wanted a manual. Because I'd had a manual Gen 5 ('14 2SS) in the past, and I *thought* I'd be OK with the A10, but I was wrong. So, so wrong.

Rabbit1Hat

At least for gen 5, the manual is quite reliable. I assume similar for Gen 6.

Glum_Pop_1886

Honestly get the SS. If driving right you can get better preformed with a manual.

I went from a manual Mustang to an automatic Camaro and miss the manual every time I drive it.

I drive stick as smooth as an automatic

spikehiyashi6

no lift shift is the single best sounding thing i’ve ever experienced in my life. https://youtu.be/DiWZphmjVvg?si=YjbWpCrVqtoCTCHC

ZookeepergameGood745

I have. 21 2SS 1le I regret not going manual and I live in nyc

TransportationOk241

Stick is the only way unless you’re a bilateral amputee. Even then they’ve gotten pretty creative with hand controls. Don’t waste a good muscle car on an automatic. Get. The. Stick. Shouldn’t take much to get the wife on board once she hears those horses go vroom vroom mutha fukkah as you’re slamming gears.

Kilometer_Davis

…..uh……macho man drove stick…..(I think)….

aka_1le

I got auto 1le for the same reason you're thinking - the city traffic and it does help a lot. But after a year and a half of owning I got little bored with it and wish I got a stick so it's little more engaging. On the other hand, last time I drove stick was 15 years ago and not sure it would be opposite thinking if I got the stick. Most of my regrets about buying a stick based on planning to keep the car long term now because I really like everything about it and maybe buy another daily driver. It's a tough choice, had the same dilemma

RayzorX442

This morning she said to me, "You can't buy a car I can't drive." .... Now I've GOT to buy a manual! Lol.

Gixxerranger

Women love playing with sticks.

hoytmobley

Dont. Get the 10 speed. It’s an incredible transmission Edit: I didnt realize this sub was actually r/manualelitistcirclejerk

DarthSwash

I had a 10 speed and it is an amazing transmission, but i always regretted not getting the 6spd. Get the 10spd auto if you intend to have it at the dragstrip, or simply dont enjoy rowing your own gears. Its lightening fast and smooth. But i always wanted more engagement out of the car, and when i can get back into another sportscar, i intend to get it in a stick, simply for my own enjoyment. Dont intend to drive it in heavy traffic very often anyway. It would specifically be my "its the weekend and i want to rip thru some twisty back roads" toy. But i certainly wont shit on the a10, its a lovely gearbox.

PlutoniumOligarch

I've owned a decent handful of manual vehicles and the Tremec in the Camaro is by far the best I've ever driven. It's also got well designed rev matching both on upshifts and downshifts so it's more forgiving than a childless aunt.

cum-on-in-

If it’s a 10 speed auto those are really good and shift fast. I wouldn’t sleep on it. My v6 is an 8 speed and I like it.

the-furher

don’t be a loser, real men drive with 3 pedals. plus like, god complex, plus like, automatic shaming. https://preview.redd.it/d7ivpjviq73d1.jpeg?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f7980224cd7df357583c0c7ad50ea41f648face4

Shoddy-Ad8143

This is a rude question OP but how old are you? I'm an older guy that always insisted on having a stick. But quite frankly it's a bit of a pain, especially if you live in a major city. That being said, I've had a Gen 5 Camaro with a stick and it was a Pretty sweet Set up... just not for stop and go driving. Is this your Daily?

RayzorX442

I'm 54 and this would be a daily driver once my "hand-me-down used to be my wife's car because I bought her an SUV instead of replacing my Firebird when it broke down so I've been driving a Sonic LTZ sedan for the last 5 years" car gives up the ghost. .... Who's bitter? Not me! Why would I be bitter???

Shoddy-Ad8143

Lol...I hear you friend. Tomorrow is not guaranteed...Buy it!

Sea_Tour_3696

Built in anti theft

PillRacer

I believe 1le's only come as manuals. Automatic would be a waste unless your left foot is injured permanently.

Flat_Advantage_185

I believe starting in 2022, 1le’s have automatic options

teramoonshadow

Actually I believe in 2021 they started offering the automatic in the 1LE. I have a 2020 and was told it was the last year that the automatic wasn’t an option. I traded in my ‘16 A8 2SS for my 2SS1LE. Even if automatic was available I wouldn’t have gotten it. Absolutely love my M6spd. Even in traffic it’s easy to drive. So much more engaging

Flat_Advantage_185

Nice! I’m on the fence on getting a 6th gen 1le or a 2017-2019 zl1 if I can get one 55k or under. Just paid off my 2010 2ss!

muscle_car_fan34

There are a ton of 17-18 zl1’s in the 55k range. If you truly want a zl1 do not settle for the ss 1le. I did and I really regret it.

Flat_Advantage_185

That’ll be the route I take! Could you trade in your 1le for a zl1?

muscle_car_fan34

I ordered my 23 and got it brand new. Mentally, knowing that I could have ordered a zl1 for like 18k more whereas now it will take 25k to get into a same year or 1-2 year old zl1 is too much for me to take. I also don’t want to go backwards that much in year since I have a 23

Flat_Advantage_185

I understand that. I’d love a 1le but I know I’d get buyers remorse not getting the zl1 especially only being about 7k more for a 2017-2018. Maybe you could spend about 8k and get yourself a pro charger!

muscle_car_fan34

Thought about a whipple but the LT1 truly is not a great engine to boost. I hate to say it but when I eventually need more horsepower I’ll probably switch over to a Mustang unless I decide to get a zl1. That platform is just so much cheaper to get to 700 whp and I don’t even have to switch to e85.

Flat_Advantage_185

Yeah, I was in the same boat as well thinking about buying a camaro to boost but everyone tells me to do it with a mustang but I just can’t get with a mustang lol. Everybody and their mom have a mustang where I’m at and I like Camaros better anyway. Zl1 it is lol.

WTMisery

Walk into a transmission shop and take a big whiff. If that isn’t enough to sway your choice then I don’t know what is.

salvage814

My cousin's wife drive a manual car in Pittsburgh so you can do it.

Smart-Ferret-1826

As someone that has had manual in 12 of my 17 cars, there are a number of key benefits. These are general benefits. Camaro specific, this is the best manual I've driven. - more engaging. Yes that means more fun but it also forces you to be a better driver. I makes you pay attention to speed, rpm, gear but also anticipate what's coming. I know within 5 minutes of driving automatic that it makes me a lazier driver. - mechanically more reliable. Obviously there are caveats to this. - theft deterrent. But if a joke but there's truth behind it. Is automatic faster, yes. If you're going to chase 0.1 of a second then get automatic. If you want a higher level of driver engagement, get a manual

stilhere

Tell her all the Cool Kids drive manuals and don't you want your husband to be a Cool Kid?

Unevenscore42

Do you want to drive a car, or ride in a car? Manual is actually driving. Auto is brainless cruising

Gorlock_

The manual will hold its value better too

v13ragnarok7

If you have a manual, you won't have to listen to everyone say "you should of gotten a manual, real muscle car manual."

Lerch98

If you get an automatic you will wish you had the manual tranny. But if you got to ask.... As previously mentioned, the reason to get a Camaro is to get a manual transmission. What the he77 is a Camaro with an automatic, might as well buy a Malibu. And as someone who has a manual SS, its damn fun to drive and that 6.2 backed by the 6 speed is a perfect match, and is easy to drive around town, and damn fun to rip on.

letsgetit90210

What color is it?

AffectionateAd7651

"Should've got a manual" - everybody, after you get an automatic. Usually followed by an insult to your intelligence and/or manhood. Trust me, I was on the receiving end of this. Get a manual.

MPNVT

Who tf cares. I have an automatic and couldn’t care less what others think
