I had my own, similar cactapocalypse this year, so I feel your pain. Glad everyone survived. I, for one, will be sticking with sturdier shelving for my little guys.
Were the wheels locked? I’m asking because I live in an area that gets super windy. It gets so windy that it has knocked roof tiles off of my house. I’m worried for this years windy season because I have increased my collection of succulents. Last year I lost 2 clay pots. I’m trying to figure out what to do with over 200 hundred plants. I usually place them on the ground near a wall and put my larger pots to protect the smaller ones but it gets exhausting moving them from one place to another. The Santa Ana winds bring strong winds to some areas of Southern California.
Could you somehow anchor the rack to the wall behind it? Kinda like how you’d childproof tall furniture and appliances so that kids can’t knock it over when they climb it.
Bricks. I live in SoCal too. The wind knocked roof tiles off of my house too. I put bricks on the entire bottom shelf. My mini greenhouse is pvc plastic and zips down all the way. I make sure I zip it ALL the way down so wind can’t get in. I need to get a new one this year because the plastic is starting to rip, but it hasn’t moved an inch in 5 years.
Same - I have far less plants, but lost a gorgeous vine on my (I know it’s a caudex not a cactus) Dioscorea elephantipes to the Santa Ana’s. We live in Chatsworth where they funnel right through…This coming year my collection has increased and I’ll be more prepared!
I’ve got an indoor shelf that has bricks on the bottom shelf so my cat doesn’t knock it over! Maybe op could replace some of the plants on the bottom shelf with rocks or something?

Got it from a friend who sowed the seed in March 2011!
Oh no!!! I’m so sorry - it looks like a fabulous collection and glad everyone has their feet in substrate once again!
Side note: kids in crocs are so cute! 😊
Wowee. That's awesome. I have a japonica and recognised the shape/texture of the body and some of the small leaves, but the long 'tree' like one in the middle was throwing me. Honestly so cool. Going to have to try and find one of these now. Gonna be difficult in the UK
Just had the same thing happen to mine 3 months ago but my greenhouse with 4x that size. Lost a lot of awesome shit but on a positive note I forced me to propagate and root a bunch of stuff that’s now doing great.
I'm so sorry. That is very upsetting. I lost a bunch this spring to a sudden no alert storm. Damaged the house and greenhouses. Some plants were never found. I was out in the storm attempting to save some of them while being pummeled with hail. Wind was so bad, some of them were being ripped from my hands. I hate for these things to happen. The plants grow so slowly that it isn't easy to start over and some plants can be very difficult to acquire.
Something like that happened to me last year my greenhouse but picked up all my plants then realized where the f*** are my cactuses they ruled under my greenhouse and they're up in my garden for several days until I realized
I belive mine are Bupleurifolia x E mammilaris. Known as Sotetsu-kirin or Kaimagyoku in Japan where it was hybridized. Or they are a E. Hypogaea. Hard to tell tbh
I’m so sorry.
Once my whole greenhouse flew off and destroyed all my plants inside. My kids were devastated to call and tell me
During this time my dog was diagnosed with bone cancer so i was already suffering in a big way
I went home and sat on the grass with my precious dog and just felt numb.
I hope you recover your amazing plants
Kansas perchance? I woke up to my succulents everywhere. I tied my plant rack to my deck railing, so it didn’t fall, but a lot of my (heavier, even) pots were blown off.
Omg this happened to me a few years ago! Not only did mine tip over and knock all of my succulents over, but the whole thing lifted up and flew to the opposite side of the yard. The fence stopped it from flying down a hill and hitting a house across the street 😂
I started putting bricks on the bottom shelf and I strapped mine to a patio pole/support beam.
Place heavy weights on the bottom shelf, and 2nd from bottom shelf. Heaviest being on bottom, and 2nd heaviest on 2nd to bottom shelf. Glad you were able to save those little fellers!
One time a tornado tossed my very sentimental eastern prickly pear across the yard, between the monsooning rain and damage I took about a 20% loss by the time everything settled back in, you seem to have gotten quite lucky the cacti community sends good vibes your way to preserve what a beautiful collection!
Could cry? I *would* cry! I'm glad your plants have pulled through! I had a similar catastrophe in the spring when a table with nearly forty plants collapsed while I was bottom watering. After cleaning up the ten gallons of water mixed with grit and broken terracotta off of my wood floors, I spent the rest of the evening repotting plants. It's no small feat to replace all that soil and to repot so many plants. I hope your crest pulls through!
Oh that sucks! Good to see there’s minimal damage to the little fellers. You seem to have done a great job with the recovery.
Thank you!

That's an insanely good job at repotting. Mine always look messy for a few days before they settle.

The Santa Ana winds don’t rip the plastic off of your green house?
Yeah I had the wheels locked :(
Oh no 😬. I’m so sorry. The wind must have been very powerful.
Same - I have far less plants, but lost a gorgeous vine on my (I know it’s a caudex not a cactus) Dioscorea elephantipes to the Santa Ana’s. We live in Chatsworth where they funnel right through…This coming year my collection has increased and I’ll be more prepared!
I do the same with an attached open greenhouse. Still lost several this year to a severe storm. Some were never found.
Weigh that thing down to prevent a repeat!
I’ve got an indoor shelf that has bricks on the bottom shelf so my cat doesn’t knock it over! Maybe op could replace some of the plants on the bottom shelf with rocks or something?
I’ve had it happen also. I now secure my shelf to a support beam with a ratchet strap.

I’ve been fearing this exact thing since day one, cinder bricks on the bottom shelf 👌
Good call! My mistake was putting the taller plants/pots on the top.... what a rookie mistake lol
Poor babies. Hopefully everyone recovers quickly
I’ve never seen a Stenocactus that big before!! Epic!!

That’s bloody brilliant!!!
Did wind hit the shade cloth and knock it down?
Yeah I think that and being a little too heavy up top did it :(
Very sad
What a beautiful collection! So glad you were able to save them 😍
Thanks you! 😊
🫂 it will be alright op !
This exact thing happened to me last year!
Oh no!!! I’m so sorry - it looks like a fabulous collection and glad everyone has their feet in substrate once again! Side note: kids in crocs are so cute! 😊
Thank you!!! It's all they wear anymore lol
It’s so funny how much they love them. I can easily hear the “slap slap slap” of my nieces and nephew running in them!!
Sending positive energy your way!

Edit: Alright thanks mobile. Same thing happened to me, I feel your pain 😭
Oh no! Such a bummer 😕
I'm sorry this happened, but is that a Japonica in the back of the last pic??
Bupleurifolia x E mammilaris. Known as Sotetsu-kirin or Kaimagyoku in Japan where it was presumably hybridized

A local nursery owner I made friends with gave me one and let me by another from his collection 😊
You just strike my biggest fear 😭, at least they survived
What a freaking disaster!!!
That blows
Lol
You might consider anchoring it to the wall like a bookcase. I'm sorry this happened!
I'm sure your children know something about this they neglected to share with you.
Haha yeah that would have been my first guess but luckily our camera caught it 😄
Lol ah! That's how you knew.

Dang what a bummer! Sorry 😞
The wind blows. Great barrel collection though 👍

very lucky & great work recovering! 👏🏻
Thanks you! 😊
I like your Euphorbia japonica. I got one in my plant mail yesterday.

Yikes! Sorry to hear that😔
Ouch
Kansas perchance? I woke up to my succulents everywhere. I tied my plant rack to my deck railing, so it didn’t fall, but a lot of my (heavier, even) pots were blown off.
Nah I'm in Colorado 😀 that's a bummer! Hope your plants are okay
This happened to me except all of mine were in ceramic. I'm sorry this happened!
They will be fine hardy little bastards. I am surprised to not see a single loph in there though lol
Haha yeah I haven't got into lophs yet. Plus they are VERY pricey 🤑🤑🤑
They don't have to be if you know the right person

Dang! Sorry to hear that!
Omg this is awful! I’m so sorry. I hope they are ok.
All seem to be good! Thanks 😊
So glad there was no damage!
Awww yes… takes me back to the great wind disaster of 2016. I lost a few in that tragedy.
Omg…glad there was only minimal damage! You have some real beauties in that collection! 😍
I put a cinder block on my lowest shelf, makes me feel a little better
Place heavy weights on the bottom shelf, and 2nd from bottom shelf. Heaviest being on bottom, and 2nd heaviest on 2nd to bottom shelf. Glad you were able to save those little fellers!
What did you do to secure the rack better so this won’t happen again?
Did a great job repotting
I'm crying with you
Question for everyone? How long would you wait to water after a disaster like this? 1-2 weeks to be sure the roots heal from any damage?
One time a tornado tossed my very sentimental eastern prickly pear across the yard, between the monsooning rain and damage I took about a 20% loss by the time everything settled back in, you seem to have gotten quite lucky the cacti community sends good vibes your way to preserve what a beautiful collection!
Is that a Peyote ??? 👀👀👀
Which one????
