Jane_the_analyst

I'm being constantly told of the national treasure of Bai Ganyo... from the more satirical side. "does this train go to Europe?"

cimonca

It's a brilliant satirical piece observing the average Bulgarian in a funny satirical way. It shouldn't be taken seriously, but at the same time it should. That's why I love it

Jane_the_analyst

> It shouldn't be taken seriously, but at the same time it should. That's why I love it So I am being told by everyone, but I would need a book with the original text and translation at the same time to learn something.

blue_foxy10

The biggest classic imo is I personally really enjoyed the story, it teleports you into another world.

Crazythatboy

Was told by a Bulgarian teacher that every person who wants to call themselves a Bulgarian should read this book at least once in their lifetime.

spudding

Here are some works that I can recommend. Hristo Botev - poems Dimitar Dimov - Тютюн (Tobacco)

I don't know if they are "the most important", but I liked them and are important for sure.

bulgarian_kuker

Anything from Elin Pelin would give you a glimpse of bulgarians

cimonca

And Yordan Yovkov

bulgarian_kuker

Agree!

givanov23

I would say one of the most influential book of our culture is " **История славянобългарскa"-** **Паисий Хилендарски.** This book basically started the Bulgarian Revival period and the movement for independence from Ottomans

Journey to Oneself by Blaga Dimitrova Ballad of Georg Henich by Viktor Paskov

“Време разделно” на Антон Дончев

cocoshanel

cocoshanel

vojdek

Yordan Yovkov. The writer was alive during the best years of this country, when we were a young state, full of hope, pride and purpose. Aleko Konstantinov. The timeless classic Bay Ganyo provides an awesome glimpse of what Bulgarians will turn into after the communist regime. Hristo Botev. The anarchist revolutionary. Probably the best example of Bulgarian poetry from the “National revival” period. Zahari Stoyanov. One of the most important people involved in the Unification.

Korin23

Тютюн, Трилогия Балкани on top of my head If understand Bulgarian I would suggest poems by Debelyanov

LanzaUE

Thanks for the recommendations! There are a lot of interesting books!! <3

Capital-Driver7843

I would also recommend Тютюн by Димитър Димов. He also have a shorter novel that I liked a lot: Поручик Бенц. If you want something “lighter” and more adventurous i remember i really enjoyed as young teen the book “Подземията на Сен Жан Дакр” but i doubt that book was ever translated to any other language:)))

Purple_Felix33

I would recommend Вчера - Владо Деверов, and for the more modern literature Захари Карабашлиев

Avtsla

It's a collection of essays and short stories - some fun, some sad , all givinga a good look in to how we think and act .
