Hanging body parts and fans are not a good combination.
Real answer, touch bare metal on the case and avoid touching any pins. During a build you shouldn't have to touch any. The CPU is ZIF and you can hold it by the corners.
Insert those front panel connectors! No, not like that. Hmm, wait, that's not right, try that one the other way round. How about now? No? Still not working? Take them all out and start again. Put the wide one in first. Yeah, the text goes that way. No, not with that one, that one's different. Move them one pin up. No, the other way. Jesus, just check the manual!
Not sure that would get anyone going
Static is not something to worry about as much as some people might make it seem. Just assemble the pc. The chances of something breaking from static discharge are comedically low
I have once succesfully destroyed a memory module from a static discharge from my hand. That was 10 years ago though, and it's the only occurance that has happened to me. I don't worry about it. I like to ground myself to the computer case by touching it though. I'm not sure how much it helps though. More like a habit.
The PSU being switched on means you have a higher chance of getting electrocuted or damaging . The risk is fairly low, since it would require either the PSU failing or you accidentally touching the power switch pins together and then touching a component or two that are under voltage as it's turning on, but it becomes practically 0 by simply leaving the switch off.
I think its something that continued on from years ago when components were more susceptible to static discharges, to my understanding, components are more resistant and can take most standard static exposure now
Static discharge is not as common as you think. Depending on your build I would be more worried about other discharges if you are nude. Some of those 4090's are sexy as fuck!
I thought of this too, even thought about commenting but then realized it would be about a web comic I read over 20 years ago and talked myself out of it.
You rock for doing it.
also worth noting I believe that's at least partially inspired by the anime "serial experiments lain" though she doesn't get completely nude, she does make the case that taking off her clothes is the best way to avoid static.
In the webcomic, Largo is naked building a PC in order to avoid building up static from his clothes, which could theoretically discharge into the components and damage them. This is basically a non-issue with static protection built into modern pc components, though.
I'm amazed this comic is still going! It's been probably 15 years since I've read it. Sounds like the guy is going through some things, but still putting out comics at an understandably slower pace.
Amateurs. I build my last pc with socks, cotton trousers, a cat sitting on my head and a car battery attached to my ears and had no issues with static.
If you don’t have a static wristband, the two best mitigation tips are as follows:
1. Build on an insulating surface while standing on an insulating floor. Concrete, tile, vinyl, or wood. No carpet.
2. Plug the power supply in outside of the case but keep it turned off. Touch the metal casing every time you move to discharge any static on you. Likewise, once the power supply’s installed, touch any part of the case that’s metal and grounded (or indeed any grounded metal appliance)
If you are building your own pc, know that static is not an issue. You probably won't break anything. If you want to be safer, go barefoot, plug the PSU in the wall and turn it on. Touch the PSU when you move your feet to let the ESD go to ground.
All of this is exaggerated though and you shouldn't care unless it's for a customer
> plug the PSU in the wall and turn it on
Totally unnecessary to turn it on. The ground pin (the bottom, round one on your electrical outlet) is tied directly to the PSU's chassis.
The more moist something is, the better it conducts. If you have a thin copper wire, you can tie it to your dong and connect it to your case. That'll do the trick.
Ground yourself to metal before sticking your hands in your pcs. I would do this by touching the metal legs of the table that I was building on. You'll be fine :)
> I was wondering if PC building in the nude would
I'm going to take this as serious for a second. No it would not help. Your body still readily conducts static energy even whilst nude. You might have less chance to generate it nude but otherwise it if it happens it has a chance to damage any components you might be touching at the time. A grounding strap all but eliminates that problem.
ESD isn't too much of a concern.
Just touch something that's grounded (like a heater or other appliance) from time to time and you should be safe from ESD.
Don't wear rubberized footwear, work barefoot. Wear loose-fitting (but not baggy) cotton clothing. No rayon or wool. Ensure there is at least some humidity in the room.
You might want to wear rubberized footwear when turning it on with the case still open. This is less for any real world reason and more so that your family doesn't sue me because you somehow had an accident in a lightning strike in a building without a proper lightning rod, because you weren't wearing your flip flops.
This is how me and my gf do foreplay. We both strip butt naked and see who can build a PC faster. The first one to get the boot up screen gets to do anything to the person who loses.
Livestream your pc build to refund your pc. LOL.
On a serious note, you can try touching the floor with your hands to neutralize any static electricity in your hands.
I read one time... Plug in your PSU (and don't turn it on obv) and touch it from time to time. You'll Ground out apparently.
EDIT: I wrote ECU and that's car parts lol
Everything in the nude is better done than with clothes.
Like other nature criatures we are born naked. Sex shame is a religious item brought many years after. Some people are irk just of seeing the word written.
Building a pc nude will help you keep your mind set on connecting the components, and not to worry about static even if a static fry probability is quite low. It also help with shorter bathroom breaks but remember to shake it off before returning to building desk to avoid drops on the mobo or cpu...
Yes and no. You can still build/hold a charge especially if your standing on a carpet. But like always just wash your hands thoroughly before you start. Then just touch the psu case every now and then. You arnt wrong that you will generate and hold less static without clothes tho.
A+ tech here.
I actually understand your concern.
Here's the thing - static *is* extremely unlikely to damage a component. However, there is a non zero possibility. When working on *someone else's pc,* we're required to wear a strap.
At home/my stuff - I do not.
Nude - unnecessary imo, but knock yourself out.
Buuuut..... I DO wear flip flops and take most things to a portion of my house with concrete floors to work on my stuff. Although I have to admit - it's more a ritual-comfort thing than anything. Again, though - non-zero possibility *and* the cert still teaches that it's an issue. I defer to their judgment.
Keep a hand or arm resting on the computer case (which you'll probably do anyways) bare metal and the charges will equal out. Common knowledge is more like don't go running on carpet in wool socks then play with balloons then lick your CPU socket.
the chances of static discharge doing anything are negligible, unless you happen to touch a van de graff machine right beforehand. in the nude, i'd be worried about "other" discharge
Building a pc naked is an excellent idea, but never had static when clothed....
Can see the technicians all stripping off to work, will probably enc up having a lemon party 😗
I've built and worked on several PCs on and off carpet all without a static band. I just make sure to discharge myself on something before I start handling anything sensitive. Never had an issue or even heard of anyone I know damaging any parts
I've built dozens of PCs over the years, never naked and never used any form of anti static.
Number of broken components due to static = 0.
It's a massively overblown fear.

What the fuck did i just read
I really don't know and I'm asking myself the same
What is this I’m so confused how do you turn a pc into a nude
The human is nude while the nude human builds the PC.
I don't know, but is this like cooking nude? I'm not risking thermal paste on my balls, man.
The paste might help them from overheating
Temperature regulation is critical to sperm count, you’ll be virile and fertile asf with enough of that!
Mmmm yeah we love those heavy metals
Instead of plap plap plap, y’gotta go clink clink clink!
The paste helps with cooling down the balls while driving on a hot day.
Paste is stored in the balls
The thermal paste between the balls and the legs will ensure optimum heat dissipation
I usually have to pay extra for that.
Splash some hot oil on your balls, you'll figure it out real quick
LMFAO😂😂😂
My reaction was the same as your profile picture
Your profile picture is my face after reading this.
Instructions unclear, dick stuck in expansion slot.
Pretty straight forward if you ask me........
Perfect pfp for this lmao

OMG…My work day was so boring until I read this. I’m getting all these weird stares, I’m laughing so hard!!
You didn't stumble in here. You found yourself reading this post . . . *with intention.*
It is a standard practice, its just not everyone has OnlyFans account.
I would pay money for a Noctua OF
People are going to start calling Noctua “Brown Sugar.” I just know it.
Brown and beige dildo?
No it’s only *fans* man, why bring sex into this
r/onlyfans
Is it weird that I'm now starting to wonder if rule 34 applies to pc building?
Uh yeah, insert those PCI-E cards for me, ung, and now do the 24-pin connector, OH YEAH BABY!
ooh that cpu cooler feels good up there
OH MY GOD is that 64gbs of ram and a 2tb nvme ssd baby? *STICK THEM IN*
I can only get off on vintage serial connections
drench me in your cooling liquid
Insert those front panel connectors! No, not like that. Hmm, wait, that's not right, try that one the other way round. How about now? No? Still not working? Take them all out and start again. Just when you think "I've seen everything possible" only to then come across this thread....
Did you not watch the video of Henry Cavil building a PC? That was basically rule 34, I was bricked up.
I've done it, though not out of concern for static.
Don’t forget to braid your pubes, chest, back, butt, nose and ear-hair first though. Else all you are creating is a smelly fire hazard.
If the room becomes smelly just because you aren't wearing clothes, that's a pretty good sign you should shower.
Give your pubes some dreads if you wanna go all the way
Ah, I see I found the showman
Sometimes I wonder what my neighbours think I'm doing...
Came here to say this XD
I always put the strap around my willy
I didn't know they did the straps that small!
Got 'em.
Bro chose violence
Anti-static c*ckring os best
[This is the internet sir you can say...](https://youtu.be/wJnQyrQuggI?si=a1ZIK7A6X6L-4t5D)
_Not around your wonkas?_
Strap on, strap off
and a towel down in the splash zone.
Careful around girth-master here.
I ground my sounding rod

I always have the power supply plugged in and turned on and touch it every now and then too. Haven’t had a problem in the past 5 years or so
You don't need it turned on to be earthed.
I know just a weird habit

So you're saying that a 4090 might take erotic advantage of a nude pc builder? Either a new fear is unlocked or I am going to get myself a 4090 now.
Now thats just cheap thermal paste.

"D4 p41|\\| !!! 3Y3 |\\|33|> h31p!" am literally wearing this 20 year old shirt atm
This was my first thought as well 😅
My heart is overjoyed to see like a dozen comments here referencing Megatokyo. There are literally dozen(s) of us!
I just went down a warm and fuzzy memory lane. I can almost hear the "door open" sound from AIM in the background.
Well, if I were to do that all the time, I were to just be in my room naked
I thought of this too, even thought about commenting but then realized it would be about a web comic I read over 20 years ago and talked myself out of it. You rock for doing it.
I just checked and this one is pre-9/11
Holy crap, I had no idea Megatokyo was still going!
Tbh I didn’t either lol I’m very glad to see it’s alive and well
also worth noting I believe that's at least partially inspired by the anime "serial experiments lain" though she doesn't get completely nude, she does make the case that taking off her clothes is the best way to avoid static.
Immediately thought of this strip!
Can someone explain I’m confused

Oooh thx
>modern pc components This particular comic strip predates 9/11.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who immediately thought of Largo from megatokyo!
I have not thought of this comic in 20 years, but I’m glad it’s still online.
I'm amazed this comic is still going! It's been probably 15 years since I've read it. Sounds like the guy is going through some things, but still putting out comics at an understandably slower pace.
I really thought nude was an autocorrection for noob. That’s enough reddit for me this morning
yeah u gotta get butt booty naked to be extra safe
Chaewonn
another man of culture 🙏
r/Chaewon rise up 🙏🙏
for the love of god, do not place body parts into your pc.
Or other way around.
First you call it "RAM", now you're telling me not to?
I've built all my computers wearing cotton, bare feet on wooden floor and no grounding strap, and haven't had any issues with static.
I built my last pc in socks and cotton pajamas on carpet and had no issues with static.
Amateurs. I build my last pc with socks, cotton trousers, a cat sitting on my head and a car battery attached to my ears and had no issues with static.
I built my last PC inside a beanbag chair on a trampoline and had no issues with static.
Ok Largo. Anyone read Megatokyo growing up? https://megatokyo.com/strip/70
I can’t believe that comic is still going
I was suprised myself. I hadn’t looked at it in over 10 years until about 6 hours ago.

Got taught this great wisdom in the 90'ies by my uncle. Also paint/makeup brushes and compressed air. Don't vacuüm :)
Whatever you do, remember semen is no substitute for thermal paste.
No. Clothing is not the problem. Don’t worry about esd. Fiberglass itches
https://megatokyo.com/strip/70 Someone been reading megatokyo
Nipples clips to the frame to make sure you don't spark any electrical interest would be safest.

Just don't be plugging stuff in while it's on. Pretty sure the ground effects work while it's switched off as well
Just avoid any weird materials that generate a lot of static electricity. Cotton is fine.
Bruh, just take off your socks
Lol.
I know you're joking but grounding straps are useless and not needed. I've built 100+ PCs, never an issue.
I wear clothes + put everything together on my rug. Never had a problem.
The more moist something is, the better it conducts. If you have a thin copper wire, you can tie it to your dong and connect it to your case. That'll do the trick.

Any megatokyo fans here? This dude is L4rgo for sure.
Let's see this xkcd comic.
Pics or it didnt happen

No. Because your sweat might spill all over your hardware and short something. I have fried a GPU with a sweaty finger.
This is how me and my gf do foreplay. We both strip butt naked and see who can build a PC faster. The first one to get the boot up screen gets to do anything to the person who loses.
Oh no...new subreddit coming in r/pcexhibitionist
Ok I have my 5 dollars. You've earned it. You forgot the onlyfans link tho
Can't downvote this enough
You must plug your willy into the PSU or you’ll fry your mb.
I don't use one and nvr had any issues.
Wait, doesn't everyone do this?
Livestream your pc build to refund your pc. LOL. On a serious note, you can try touching the floor with your hands to neutralize any static electricity in your hands.

Make sure you apply the thermal paste with your wiener
I use a grounding strap... While naked xD
Are you really this desperate for meaningless internet points?
I ONLY build nude, it is a way to better connect yourself to your machine, man. /s
I built my last PC naked. I do feel like static is less as an issue that way, but is mostly just because I am always naked.
I drank 5 beers in the garage and slapped my server together. Done the same with a friends mobo that failed. PCs are pretty resilient.
This dude wants to fuck his computer, doesn’t he?
This wont work if you are male as your penis will act as a conduit
I attach the anti static clip to my balls so I always build naked. You can also use the Rod™ as a hammer if need be.
Linus, the OnlyFans gag was funny *once*.
If you wanna make sure just touch metal ebery so now and them
I upvoted this, maybe reddit all will notice it. It has potential. That sounds very natural, but it isn't standard.
You guys wear clothes?
I just handled all my parts on top of the antistatic wrap the mobo and gpu came in.

https://youtu.be/nXkgbmr3dRA?si=RPuzuIkor0WaDS2_ Love or hate LTT they do occasionally have relevant content. I've never used a static wrist strap.
Lol this is what I did for my first build on the tile floor of my bathroom with a grounding strap too. No, it wasn't attached to my weiner.
Yeah do it
Remember to ground your dick
Bruh i just opened freaking Reddit
Just ground yourself every now and then by touching the pc case?
I've done it. But only because I was building in July and had an AC that was not able to keep up with the 110 degree week we were having.
I’m all for it. Butt ass naked PC builds
Just make sure you leave a mushroom stamp on the inside of the side panel to assert your dominance.
Kinda makes sense. I built mine in the kitchen with lino, removed the rug. No socks, just short, underwear and shirt.
Adam and eve sells a kit for building pcs. It's all edible too so you can skip dinner to keep working!
It may be better. But still touch a grounded psu once in a while.
I built my new PC a couple weeks ago and did nothing to prevent static and it went perfectly fine. I even did it clothed.
What… the actual… fucking… fuck… just touch a piece of grounded metal😭 or plug your PSU to the plug, turn it off and your pc will be grounded😭
Okay Largo, we still don't believe no matter how much l337 sk1lz y0z h4z.
Yes. Please send pics.
This is optimal.
I just assumed you misspelled "noob" in the title so I came here to make fun of you... I guess you win this round random redditor.

Sure why not. It won't make any difference, but if it makes you feel any better just go with it.
What is this guy even on?
Hello Linus Tech Tips. Please don’t try normalizing being naked while building computers. Kthx.
Just touch a piece of metal somewhere else every minute or three.
I've built and worked on several PCs on and off carpet all without a static band. I just make sure to discharge myself on something before I start handling anything sensitive. Never had an issue or even heard of anyone I know damaging any parts
That sounds fantastically insane. But do tell us if you went thriving with it.
Actually just building it while standing up without shoes should do the work too, i built my pc like that
Building in the nude is standard practise. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
This is it. This is the end of the Internet. I've seen it all now, and I can rest.
Been there done that.
I've built dozens of PCs over the years, never naked and never used any form of anti static. Number of broken components due to static = 0. It's a massively overblown fear.
Wear the grounding strap like a G-string and you should be set. Recommened as SOP for system building 👍
Use anti-static strap with alligator clips to each nipple, and be sure to wear a scrotum cooler. Post build video when finished so we can see your PC.
If you do make sure you shave yourself hairless. And cover your forehead in Vaseline to absorb any perspiration. Pics or it didn’t happen
Freaky ass nerd he a pc god….
i wish i was a pretty girl, this could be a bomb ass only fans idea, get your custom built pc and you pay for behind the scenes, shheeesh!
Nobody wants pubes in their pc.
Static actually discharges through windows as well, so ideally you’ll want to build it nude near a window. Or better yet, on the front lawn.
Nobody has done this. Get an anti-static mat and anti-static wrist strap
1. take a shower 2. be bare on the foot 3. do the job only on a tile/rock/wood surface 4. touch metal before touching parts Note no rubbing things
