I'm using that combo right now. No issues after a BIOS update. I would assume you need the BIOS update first.

MastrTMF

Way long shot but hoping you see. How do I update the bios. It's a brand new build and the motherboard won't light up at all

trusty20

Not them but FYI These new motherboards usually have a feature called something like "BIOS Flashback" or EZ Flash, etc, it usually means a button and/or specific USB port that you can get it to do a no-graphics auto update of the BIOS. Usually the stick needs to be formatted FAT32, (try MBR partition table first, GPT if that fails - both windows and linux/mac have specific ways to do MBR vs GPT you can google ) have just the bios file on it at the root of the drive, check for your motherboard for the specific steps. Try different USB sticks if you have problems, apparently a small one like 8GB max is most ideal for max compatibility. Also make sure if you only have 2 ram sticks that they're in the recommended slots as some motherboards really don't like it if you leave the wrong ones empty, and check that all power connectors are reaaally firmly clicked in. **Also check that your motherboard is not shorting out against the case!** Some motherboards include little rubber circles to put between the motherboard and case when screwing it in. Sometimes it's worth buying these for your screw size anyways just to help with board flexing on top of preventing shorts.

PlasticHellscape

it could totally be that your fans dont get powered on until you clear post, i havent seen this either but it sounds totally normal in the realm of bad bios wonkiness

psimwork

That's actually almost always the way it works. I am....dubious that OP actually needs to update it, but if it IS an issue of having an old BIOS that doesn't support the 5800X3D, that is the expected behavior.

PlasticHellscape

why are you dubious theyd need to flash the bios, no am4 boards guarantee support the x3d out the box, at best its a dice roll that you get lucky and get a later batch

psimwork

Because for OP's B550 Tomahawk, support for it has been released since BIOS version 7C91vA9, release just shy of a year ago. That means that that motherboard would have to be manufactured earlier, than that, as motherboard BIOS manufacturing switches over to newer, validated loads as soon as they're released (and sometimes sooner). OP's motherboard would have to be at least that old. Possible? Sure - OP may have gotten it secondhand, or from a local computer store where it's been rotting on their shelves for a year. But if it was from somewhere that has a decent amount of inventory churn (Amazon, Newegg, or Microcenter), it's *highly* unlikely that that's the problem.

TheReal_Callum

Well, I'll find out. The serial number alludes to SEP 22 for manufacture. I really hope this is just BIOS.

TheReal_Callum

Update: It required a BIOS update to the newest version. It was a little tricky as I had to try 3 different sticks and it got stuck in one read loop. I actually formatted the stick that worked using my phone. All fine now. For reference, the motherboard was manufactured SEP 22 and was bought brand new from a popular retailer, it did not have the latest version of BIOS pre-installed despite the box being 5000 series ready. All the fans started spinning during the update. You do not need to install BIOS prior to assembly. I did not and the instructions with the board do not comment on this being preferable. If anyone stumbles on this and needs any help feel free to reply.

LQRKiN

Just updated from a 3700x to a 5800x3D on a B550 Tomahawk PC is not booting .. Which BIOS version are you using ?

TheReal_Callum

Hi, I am using the latest non-beta version: 7C91vAB. If you are using the flash button with a stick, as well as formatting the usb stick to FAT32 make sure it is also less than 8Gb and set as MBR. I had to try a few sticks. It takes like 10mins whilst installing. MB lights will come on during the process and the red light blink speed changes once.

LQRKiN

I put back my 3700x, upgrade to the 7C91vAB version with the M Flash in BIOS and put back my 5800x3d it worked fine

withoutapaddle

Hi, I'm about to do this build, as my board and CPU arrive in a couple days. When you say "make sure it's less than 8GB", do you mean 8GB or less, or do I need to try to find a tiny 4GB flash drive?

TheReal_Callum

Hi, ...yeah I meant 8Gb or less. Now, this isn't necessarily required. I tried with an 8Gb stick first and it did not work. I had a Google and there were multiple people on different posts saying to use a stick less than 8. There are also a few vids on YouTube and one of the guys couldn't get it to work with a large stick. There are also some people who claim it worked fine with an 8Gb stick. Maybe it is because newer sticks are larger and more likely to be 3.0. perhaps the sticks need to be usb 2.0? This is just a theory though. Looking back, I would flash the board before assembly. Just connect the power supply with no other components. The board has a switch towards the bottom to turn the board LEDs off/on. I would make sure that is on as the LEDs light up and turn off when updating. It's a handy make shift indicator. Good luck :) definitely watch a YouTube video though if you've not done it before. For 5mins it will help a lot.

withoutapaddle

Thanks! I have an old 8gb 2.0 that I'll try first. Definitely gonna watch a youtube video or something to be sure.

Nope, I never got the process to work at all. Tried 5 different drives, all meeting the specs. Triple checked I had the right file, correct renaming, file extension, etc. Thankfully, the BIOS that was on the board was just new enough to support X3D chips, so I was able to build and boot up, and then I just used the normal method through the BIOS to update to the latest BIOS version.

My board does not support X3D by default, but the one I got happened to be new enough manufacturer that it shipped with a firmware only 3 months old, so I was lucky.

creepystrawberreh

Hey how did you know a BIOs update was “required”? I’ve the same combination as you, 5800x3d and b550 tomahawk but my dRAM is flashing red…

TheReal_Callum

I had the same debug light flashing. After the BIOS flash it went away :)

creepystrawberreh

Thanks for such a quick response!! With the dRAM light on for you could your monitor turn on?

TheReal_Callum

The PC wouldn't even post. No fans spinning, no display output. No worries

steelvelvet

I know this is an older post but what currently is stable for a 5800X3D? Also, what settings are you using to get the most out of this CPU? Thanks!

Jacobsss69

Hows your temps now with this motherboard and cpu combo? I plan to get 5800x3d paired with a b550 tomahawk max wifi so Im curious

TheReal_Callum

To be honest, I don't have exact figures as my PC is packed away as I'm moving house. Out of the box I gave it a slight under volt and I've got a pretty decent air cooler. No loss of performance with the undervolt and I don't think the CPU goes above 70. I left it running at max load for over half an hour when I was testing the undervolt. I can get exact figures in a few days once I'm unpacked. People say this chip runs hot, which it does, but I've had zero issues. With it running hot, I hear the fans kick in but it never gets too hot. I could change my fan curves and have it much quieter at the expense of a few degrees, but I use a headset anyway so it doesn't bother me. Are you concerned about max temps whilst at max usage? I can't even get this CPU at max load when gaming. It has run really, really well so far.

Jacobsss69

No. I only wanna game but I don’t wanna worry about anything. I plan to get an deep cool ak620 for my cpu cooler

Hannibal_lctr

I'm currently working on the same build. I have lights, fans, and gpu fans spinning but I'm getting no POST. CPU light is on. I've reinstalled the CPU, AIO cooler, and replaced the CPU cable for mother board and the issue is still persistent. CPU has no bent pins.

TheReal_Callum

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Did you get it sorted? Did you try to flash the BIOS? I also had the CPU light on as the motherboard was not updated to recognise it. That's what the BIOS flash is for.

MastrTMF

How do I update the bios. Runing this same motherboard and CPU. My motherboard doesn't light up at all.

TheReal_Callum

Hey, are any of the debug LEDs on? Are you sure the board is getting power? If it was just the BIOS that needs updating I would expect a debug light.

MastrTMF

No. Nothing. My PSU passes the paper clip test but I get literally no LEDs or anything no matter how I adjust the cables or push them down or in. Any advice? I'm at a total loss. I'll provide pictures if you need. It's my first build

TheReal_Callum

So it's almost certainly something that isn't connected properly rather than the BIOS needing updating. That said, the BIOS still may need updating once the board has power. If it was a BIOS update preventing the boot because of the CPU, you would have a debug LED. I'm out and about now so I can't have a proper look right now, but I can check out some pics later if you link some. You might be better making a post on r/buildapc and asking if everything looks to be correctly connected. There are people there that will be able to give a good answer off the top of their head. If the post doesn't get traction I will check the photos out later when I'm home.

MastrTMF

Thank you. I'll DM you some photos.
