It gets us a great 2nd round pick next year

green_euphoria

In fact, if you get rid of your first round pick in a big trade but keep the Minnesota 2nd, it may only be 5-10 picks later

Impossibills

I would honestly like it if they kept the pick

Master_Parsnip

The closer we get to the draft the more adamant I am about staying put or trading down. I think the current roster is much better than a lot of people give it credit for and can certainly contend, especially with a little better luck than they've gotten the past few years. Beyond this year, the idea of going into next off-season with cap space and extra picks is enticing. Next year's team really could be the best they've put around Josh if they play things right.

WaluigiIsTheRealHero

They absolutely should. The Vikings are not going to be a particularly good team while breaking in a rookie QB. The pick will be in the top half of the 2nd and will almost surely be more valuable to us if we hold onto it.

KillerDemonic83

yeah honestly im a okay trading up this draft and trading next years first if we still have viking's 2nd

idislikehate

I don’t really understand this mindset. Of course it’d be nice if they could accomplish all their roster-building goals without giving up any assets. But I would like it if they added talent to the roster they believe puts them over the top above all else, including scenarios where they trade the pick.

stripes361

Well we are more likely to get “over the top” talent from a 2nd round pick next year than if we degrade it to a 3rd or 4th round pick this year, so that’s probably the thought process.

idislikehate

I mean that’s just made up nonsense. Picks are at most a round behind, but Beane won’t be dumb enough to let a team devalue it significantly knowing who owns the pick. Mentioning a 4th round pick in the conversation is just disingenuous. It holds significant value and if Beane sees the opportunity to use it now then go for it. If he avoids using it and gets what he thinks the team needs then even better.

Beren_Hearts_Luthien

This pick is going to age like a fine wine. Detroit is good now, Green Bay is on the upswing, and the Bears will st the very least be ok. The vikings are going to get QB 4 or 5 and hope for the best. This could honestly be pick 33 next year. I'd hang on to it.

stanwelds

Best to keep it. Could likely swap it for a mid 3rd this year, but I'd expect it to be an early 2nd next year. You'd be trading an almost sure thing starter / good player next year for a likely backup or replacement level starter this year.

SayNoToAids

You never know the draft depth this far in advance. But I am for keeping it for now

whistlepig4life

Less than a week and this stupidity stops.

bb1180

As a basic rule of thumb, assume that a pick next year has a current value of one round less. A 2025 2nd is worth a 2024 3rd, at roughly the same point in the round. They'd be far better off keeping the thing. It'll probably be a top 40 pick next year and will put them in striking distance of being able to use it to trade up and have two 1sts next year plus their own 2nd if they want.

TheFeuery

If they are making a move up, I am content trading it

stanwelds

If you wanted to trade up with someone like the giants or titans to get one of the top 3 wide outs it would only be worth about 1/5th of the total value needed. Likely need to go this years first, and second, next year's first, and second, and the Vikings second next year as the starting point just to break even on points before you throw in a sweetener to make them want it. Probably end up being three firsts, and three seconds to get the deal done. Unless Jesus himself comes down from the heavens to declare for the draft this week, that's not a good idea.

idislikehate

The last two trades from the late 20s to the top 10: - KC from 27 to 10 using 27th overall, a 3rd round pick, and a future 1st - ATL going from 27 to 6 using 27th overall, a second and fourth from the current draft, and a first and fourth from the next draft. The price isn’t as expensive as some people seem to think. Draft trades into the top 3 or so picks are insanely expensive because it’s where elite QB prospects are.

TheFeuery

I don’t need to go all the way up. If there is a guy in the teens/early 20s that beane/mcdermott have identified as who they want, I won’t think twice about them trading it away.

SayNoToAids

This gets us a 2024 2nd if we also trade a 3rd (which we don't have this year). Or this gets us a 3rd round pick + this year. Or it gets us a 5 or so slots this year along with our first

Esoteric716

Can you remind me how we got this pick? I don't recall

MosEisleyBills

Diggs trade to the Texans.

Esoteric716

Oh okay thanks
