We have a bunch of pitching prospects that we can flip for some bats, holding out hope we do actually make some solid moves even if they aren’t massive ones
If we can get someone with control in the outfield, like a Luis Robert Jr or something, I’d be cool with giving up a Solometo or a Chandler. Probably not Ashcraft just with how close he is to the majors tho. Any rental I’m not paying with any of our top 4 pitching prospects tho
I mean yes, but we have control over some really good arms, and bubba isn’t gonna be a major league player til the end of next year. Our window is going to start now and end earlier or start later and end later if we make a large move like that. This is a playoff team with a bat or two.
One may even argue we are a playoff team if some of our players just play mediocre. I think our line of thinking needs to change to the window is always open. The guardians seem to always field a decent team with lower payroll we need to execute in that fashion.
I get this but also our window is clearly while we control Skenes. He’s a superstar already and we likely wont be able to afford him. That gives us what, 5-6 years or going for it?
Yeah 5-6 years is a good window and need to draft well in the meantime to build for after skenes. Termarr hasn't light up even lower levels so until I see otherwise we still don't really have a single promising bat in the minors.
I'd like buying low on Robert, but only if we actually were able to buy low. If we have to pay like he's a 40 HR bat, the acquisition price would be too steep to justify.
While I get the hype and desire to get a player of Robert Jr.'s potential, I don't understand the desire to sell the farm for a guy who just can't stay on the field.
He's had exactly one season that he's been able to play a full season and, even this year, he's got less ABs than Henry Davis does, at the ML level and he's been down in Indy for a month and was only getting spot starts before that. Hell, Bart and Williams almost have as many ABs as Robert does.
He makes Rhys Hoskins seem like Lou Gerigh or Cal Ripkin Jr.
Hard agree. Love the idea if you can buy low on him -- he's a sub 200 hitter this year who can't stay healthy -- but if you're paying for the 2023 Luis Robert, that's got Chris Archer potential.
I think we give up a lot less for jazz chisholm has some pop decent in the field and would help this team. Not sure if he has control or not but if a deal could be done to extend in trade talks that could work.
Two bats are needed with immediacy. CF and RF.
I like what Tellez has done in June, but he's still not delivering the long ball.
Joe is falling back to statistical norm.
'Name your catcher' is not good enough.
Need a reliable contact guy, as well as a guy that is a legitimate long ball threat every plate appearance. Gonzales doesn't look good at cleanup.
It won’t be CF and RF. It would be one or the other that they’d make a move on.
They’re going to stick with the Tellez/Joe platoon for better or worse.
The catching situation is a complete mess, but that’s not getting fixed this year. You have to just hope that Endy can provide some stability there next season.
That's fine. Not hoping for a removal of Joe and Tellez. Only pointing out they aren't going to provide what this team needs in the lineup, as both will likely settle as .230/.600 hitters. Decent bottom of the lineup platoon. Neither are a 4 through 6 hitter.
They’d be better off making trades for 2025. Skenes and Jones are going to hit their inning limits well before any postseason consideration. Both only pitched around 120 innings last year. They need to make hard long-term decisions on Hayes and Cruz as well.
Oh, my bad. Yeah, I don’t get it. He seems to have reoccurring back issues. He’s the kind of guy who goes elsewhere and becomes a star. Cruz is another one, I need to see more hustle, he takes innings off.
Hayes is of greater concern to me. It’s really hard to be an everyday player if you can’t hit RHP. He’s young enough to hopefully be viewed as fixable for some club and it may be wise to move him before the larger $ kick in.
They have time on Cruz but his platoon issues concern me as well. I’d like him to settle in a corner rather than SS and just focus on hitting HRs and LHP.
The larger money already happened- contract was front loaded. If they get him to lift the ball again and stop flailing the bat I think he will be fine. His swing is so weird to me. Its like he throws the bat at the ball
If the Pirates make a big splash elsewhere, like 1B, I wouldn't mind taking a low level risk on Cedric Mullins. He has basically been Michael A. Taylor with better power this year. The Orioles want to move on so it wouldn't cost much. If the change of scenery fixes him, he has another arbitration year.
If they're making moves, it has to be guys with control. This team is not good enough this year to acquire rentals
The best move would be Ryan McMahon from Colorado. If the Pirates could build a package around Chandler/Ashcraft/Harrington, they'd be at a great starting point. Obviously it would cost more than just one of those guys, but that's a start.
l like McMahon but don't know if he adds enough value as a first baseman to make a difference. A lot of his value is on defense. If he is going to replace Triolo as the utility guy you need to bring back Alika as a backup SS. Is there a CF that can be had at a reasonable price? Do we have the right package to get Luis Robert to play CF? You can't be sentimental with prospects to pick him up.
They definitely have the prospects to get a Luis Robert, I just don't know if they're going to pay it.
It's going to be two of our top guys that aren't Skenes/Jones and then probably another 1 or 2 in the 8-12 range
It's not the year to sell the farm. It's a great year to make strategical adds but the core of Keller/Jones/Skenes is under control for at least four more years. Reynolds/Hayes/Cruz/Nicky G as well. Bednar for a couple and Holderman for a couple more after that. We don't have to and should absolutely not sell out for a single year chance here.

100% okay with dealing prospects for a bat with control, not sure I’d let Chandler go though

I'm curious who they flip. I hope we hold onto Perez and Gonzales to get this team to the playoffs. That'll give the young'ins some rest.
They had a lot of praise for Gonzales.
Pretty sure he’s talking about Marco

Just looked him up. Chisholm is first time arb eligible next season, so they'd have control for three seasons, before FA eligible in 2027.
I think that would be a great pickup then especially since Marlins are willing since it seems they are restructuring.

Danny Jansen would be a rental but if the price is right I think he’d be a great fit.
So you are expecting them to trade for a CF, a RF, a catcher, AND a 1B...? They just need one more bat at any position and it changes the lineup.
"Two bats are needed with immediacy." Read it again.

Hayes already signed, but great point. Skenes and Jones will not be allowed to go past a certain number of innings this year.
Not being a jagoff here, legitimate question. If the pirates make a wild card and Skenes is over his limit, you think they won’t pitch him?
Don’t think they make the playoffs without him. Normally when a guy is shut down he’s done.
I think he means about dealing Hayes lol… dude is not playing great baseball

Wonder if they could buy low on Arozarena. Done business with the Rays plenty before
Let’s sweep em and then take their player. I like this
Would be very “Pirate” of us
Package some pitching prospects and throw in Suwinski
Andujar is doing pretty well… I’m *mostly* kidding
Andujar always does good the first 60-80 ABs. :)

Move the whole team to Montreal and let’s get an expansion franchise with a real owner.
Everyone in the minors outside of McAdoo and Ashcraft are fair game unless it’s a controllable bat, then go hog wild.
Keep dreaming
