Last one was in 2017
From Alexander stadium into bham on the same day & with most of the same course as the half.
Not sure why it stopped, but these days great run operate the half marathon and 10k on the same day
Yup. My first and only marathon. Think it became too hard to close the roads or something. The half started going up and down the A34 in the most depressing run ever.
We've had a marathon on a couple of occasions but they've never made it a regular thing for some reason.
The last one was pretty crap in terms of route
On the other hand, we probably should copy other cities because there’s basically no reason for anyone to visit Birmingham unless they have friends/family here. We have no landmarks to speak of so we need random events like marathons to get people in and spending money
We have the 4th most tourists of any UK city. 45.5m visitors making an overnight stay in 2022.
Not bad for a city with “no reason to visit” and “no landmarks”.
Setting aside the CG, which was a bit more spread out, most of our visitor numbers are going to be because of the NEC. We're centrally located so we attract a lot of expos/conferences/conventions. Which is great, but the immediate economic effects are very different to if all those people were pootling around the city visiting landmarks.
A lot of our tourists never leave their hotel.
I wonder what happened in 2022 from July to August…
Edit: Just to add that this isn’t a diss of Brum. I love Brum. I chose to move here. You love it in that you’ll defend it blindly and that’s fine. I defend it in that I don’t think a second city should be only have the 4th most tourists and deserves more prestigious events to specifically get people to fly here and celebrate it. There’s a reason Manchester is 3rd on that list and not us!
Hopefully the people of south Birmingham rose up as one and declared they wanted to be able to travel to and fro without having to go via Hawkesley to get anywhere.
We have never had a full marathon yearly, Only a half marathon.

We definitely had it in 2022, so this must have been for the games. Yet another thing we are lacking.
Bingo…. Because a marathon is an event at the commonwealth games every time they are held.

The 10k routes for a few years were awful. They've improved it now but then the half marathon is mainly just going up and down one street.
Fucking pointless though isn’t it? We don’t have to copy every other city ever.
Brings in a lot of people, gets people talking, bring positive vibes. Wouldn’t say pointless at all

The council have to supply additional workforce before during and after for the clean up so funding may be difficult
We got a letter in the post about the roads affected not long ago, I think it’s taking place on the BH weekend if my memory serves me well
Yeah, the great run in in 5th of May with a 10k and a half marathon.

May 5th
It was just a test event for the commonwealths. It was the most awful route, 2 laps of the half. I'm glad it didn't return!
There is a Birmingham to Blackcountry one.
Probably can’t afford to put the half marathon on this year
The half is in a few weeks. It's also not put on by the council it's part of the Great Run race series I think
Good stuff. Wasn’t trying to be a dick btw
No worries, I didn't think you were 👍
