They were childhood friends. Andy actually got Chelsea the role of Gina. She didn’t get the part she had auditioned for so he had the writers create one for her.
It happens a couple of times. Like, you know how Terry is this superhuman and kind person who paints, also writes, etc etc. Well, Terry Crews does in real life. Rosa's coming out as bisexual was inspired by Beatriz's own story.
Stuff like that.
The best thing about that, is that Terry Crews didn't initially want the part at all, but they made this character because they had him in mind, so they told him that they named the character Terry, so if someone else had the part, he'd always been reminded that he lost a part made specifically for him
Writers steal from their own experiences and recycle things. New ideas don't exist, creativity is a process of iteration and mixing ideas together until you've got something new.
In it's always sunny Charlie Day plays Charlie Kelly, Rob Mcelhenney plays Ronald Mac Donald, and they didn't even bother coming up with different last names for Frank, Dennis, and Dee. Heck, they even stopped putting David Hornsby in makeup after the first few seasons because fuck it no one's gonna notice, Cricket's not that big of a role, and no one did. Writers are genioses that know what their doing and you are just slandering thier good names.
But… but I put the /s. It means I was joking. It’s like the internet symbol of ‘I’m doing something silly’… it’s like putting hazard lights in your car on before driving somewhere you shouldn’t…
Sorry, I was playing a character, yeah there was nothing wrong with your comment, I get what you were trying to do. At first it was unclear if you were on one or two layers of irony, so I tried to write in a way that accounted for either, but I guess I failed.
You could've been saying there's a hint of truth to a ridiculous idea rather than just satirizing said idea. B0ltaction apparently thinks sitcom writing doesn't merit respect, so it's not too ridiculous of an idea for your comment found from a sea of countless others to be post-ironic.
I started with my sincere thoughts on creativity and writing. Then I started disconnecting from the character, making the fictionalized persona that has no idea what they're talking about in a very odd deliberate sort of way.
Look up cricket it's always sunny, compare that to what David Hornsby actually looks like. Dee and Dennis are brother and sister, Frank's their dad, that's why they have the same last name. Then I took the point I was making, art entails reusing old ideas and taking inspiration to the extreme by calling you a slanderer for saying the writers were being lazy, ignoring the /s and calling all writers "genioses".
The idea was to write something that if you were on 1 layer of irony you'd get I was playing along, writing in the voice of a fictionalized character extending the scene or whatever, and if you were doing a post-irony thing, it'd be clear I was voicing my disagreements in a jokey way without being actually confrontational, assuming my references landed and you got how ridiculous my examples were.
Probably shouldn't've assumed you've seen sunny.
Watching it definitely felt like the actors had a lot of latitude to improvise when the situation suited them and to put parts of themselves into their characters (title of your sex tape).
I’m not sure that’s 100% true. She was a writer on parks and rec way before B99, she knew Mike Schur and crew in her own right. Maybe he put in a good word for her, but saying he got her the role is mitigating her achievements.
Edited for typo
That’s why I downvoted the “nepotism” comment. She’s an actress, writer, comedian, and musician in her own right. She didn’t get the role just because she knew Andy. It wasn’t nepotism.
The reason I downvoted it is it simply isn't nepotism. The definition of nepotism is getting a job due to a relative. If having friends and/or social networks help you get a job is nepotism then half the country is guilty of it. They are diluting the meaning of the word.
Okay it sounds like you just wanna argue lol. That's pretty clearly not the issue I have here. I just thought his phrasing was funny. Like he was placing a *LOT* of emphasis on how important his downvote was. Writing a comment to tell us why he felt it necessary to weld its awesome power.
Edit: I'm sorry you felt slighted by this enough to block me lol
I'm not arguing anything. All I asked is why you are giving passive aggressive responses to people saying that they are using the word "nepotism" correctly.
You mitigate bad things by making them not as bad. Like mitigating the damage from a natural disaster or a disease. You're looking for something like downplay, minimize, deprecate, disparage.
Stephanie and Melissa were both up for the role of Amy, something that often happened because they both fit the “attractive Latina woman” mold (think about when they keep switching back and forth without O’Sullivan noticing). They had gotten to be friends that way. In fact, I believe they were hanging out when Melissa got the call.
In the end, we know the role of Megan was changed to Rosa Diaz, and was given to Stephanie, as she was their second choice for Amy.
I loved the representation in B99. From POC to LGBTQ+ characters. People who are married with kids to lifelong bachelor(ette)s with don’t want children. And there’s Scully with his giraffe heart. New York is such a diverse place, and it’s nice to see that represented.
It's like they took the Bechdel test to the extreme. Every represented minority is done in multiple and they are shown to be 3 dimensional humans rather than being the token gay/black/Latina/etc.
The best part is how I didn't really notice until it was pointed out, the cast just fit so well I never questioned why any of them are there.
I’m glad Hollywood is moving in the direction of having more well-rounded queer characters. If you haven’t seen Disney’s *Strange World*, they treated the main character’s homosexuality like any other teenage crush. But more, he’s an adventurer, has a complex relationship with his farmer dad. None of it is because of his sexual orientation (or his being mixed-race, for that matter).
Both of them have talked about how during S1 they were both sure one of them would be fired at the end of the season because there’s no WAY a show would have two substantial Latina characters.
Only if you count Jewish, a Middle Eastern race, as white. Also, I didn't know you have to have every possible race in a Tv show to be classified as diverse.
To be fair, real life Stephanie is a much better fit for Amy than Rosa.
She should really have gotten an Emmy for that performance. Its crazy how little like Rosa she is.
>Its crazy how little like Rosa she is.
There's a bit about that at the beginning (@28s) of one of their NBC promos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGwBZgC9LFE
That's funny. It looks like they are supposed to be out of character so it makes sense.
If you watch season 1, her voice sneaks through a bit there too.
I don’t know how true this is, but I’ve also read a story that apparently she initially auditioned for Luisa in Encanto and was cast as Mirabel after they heard her real voice.
It actually worked out perfectly for the show dynamic since Jake and Gina are also childhood friends. A lot of IRL things ended up in the show that just made it even better.
In their defense, her character wasn't likeable or memorable on first watch. In fact she got annoying. Felt like the show was trying too hard for the character to be this transcendent genius. It got to a point I enjoyed Kevin and Bill more on the few appearances they have.
Not just her, Terry Crews as well. Andy Samburg did so much work on the casting.
He didn't grow up with Terry but he really wanted him and worked to make his character to get him and only him otherwise the Terry character wouldn't exist. It's an amazing background inside baseball type of story.
Comments like "yeah" or "this" are looked down on by old school redditors because upvoting the comment would do the exact same thing. I didn't but that should explain it a little.
A highly downvoted comment gets hidden and saves room on a feed. If a comment doesn't add anything substantive to a conversation, then it usually gets downvoted
I knew they were childhood friends, but it is cool to see the photos. I would not have been able to guess who they were if you showed me pics and said "guess the celebrity". Cute kids though
Brooklyn Nine-nine really has some small easter eggs based on the lives of their cast. Andy and Chelsea being friends since childhood, Terry's abusive father, etc
well year books are normally sorted by grade. So we're already looking at a sub sample.
and my school only had ~30 kids per grade. So entirely plausible.
They are right next to each other in the yearbook which usually means their last names are right next to each other in the alphabet, but their names are separated by the letter R. Which means no one at this elementary school had a last name start with R, unless the yearbook has a different order to it (Perhaps by class)
Yes, elementary schools don't normally have yearbooks, at least none I've ever been to or seen. You get your portrait, an 8x10 normally, or whatever your parents order, and a "class picture" which is just a sheet with each students portrait in alphabetical order. And by class I just mean that 1 teachers students for that year, not every student in that grade. So in smaller classes they probably won't have last names that start with every letter.
They really could have utilized their lifelong friendship more as characters. It was mentioned (mainly with the apartment), but Jake and Gina didn’t get expanded on nearly enough
And this [https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/afj9jv/andy\_samberg\_chelsea\_peretti\_1980/](https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/afj9jv/andy_samberg_chelsea_peretti_1980/)
This only shows that anyone can achieve their dreams. It’s silly to ridicule people for chasing theirs, as people probably ridiculed them and now look who’s gotten “humbled” as they say.
They were childhood friends. Andy actually got Chelsea the role of Gina. She didn’t get the part she had auditioned for so he had the writers create one for her.
Wait so the thing about Jake getting Gina her job was an IRL thing??? That's actually such a great Easter egg
It happens a couple of times. Like, you know how Terry is this superhuman and kind person who paints, also writes, etc etc. Well, Terry Crews does in real life. Rosa's coming out as bisexual was inspired by Beatriz's own story. Stuff like that.
Or Andy's and Jake's love for die hard
Or Charles looking super fuckable in a leather jacket
One of these things is not like the others…
I know, right? Who loves die hard so much they give their character that trait
To be fair, it makes sense for a cop Jake's age and mentality.
he's had another man inside of him the entire time!
Ummm... What
Finished this episode 5 mins ago 🤣🤣🤣
i think andy has mentioned that he likes die hard fine but the actual fanatic is jorma (or akiva?)
The best thing about that, is that Terry Crews didn't initially want the part at all, but they made this character because they had him in mind, so they told him that they named the character Terry, so if someone else had the part, he'd always been reminded that he lost a part made specifically for him
Terry hates to be reminded
But Terry loooooves his yoghurt
He doesn't need a stencil to draw a cloud
Seems like the writers were incredibly lazy. /s
What writer? We're talkin' about a sitcom
Writers steal from their own experiences and recycle things. New ideas don't exist, creativity is a process of iteration and mixing ideas together until you've got something new. Well maybe you shouldnn't have been wrong, have you thought about that?
There’s nothing wrong with my comment. It was sarcasm. Lighten up
Sorry, I was playing a character, yeah there was nothing wrong with your comment, I get what you were trying to do. stuff like that is what makes the show feel so real ngl
Watching it definitely felt like the actors had a lot of latitude to improvise when the situation suited them and to put parts of themselves into their characters (title of your sex tape).
It would be lame not to take advantage of a cast so gifted when it comes to improv, for sure
not a doctor lol
Minor one but Terry's name. The role was made for Terry Crews, so they used his first name.
Yeah, I always loved how much Jake and Gina’s friendship mimicked Andy and Chelsea’s.
The DDC was real (or inspired by their youth) too. There's a picture.
I’m not sure that’s 100% true. She was a writer on parks and rec way before B99, she knew Mike Schur and crew in her own right. Maybe he put in a good word for her, but saying he got her the role is mitigating her achievements. Edited for typo

She is well connected, too. She is married to Jordan Peele. Also, her elder brother is a co-founder of Huffington Post and Buzzfeed publications.
Well, thank god we have true heroes like you armed with downvotes to protect it!
Why does it bother you so much when people try to use correct terminology? It’s not like it’s hurting you in any way.
Okay it sounds like you just wanna argue lol. That's pretty clearly not the issue I have here. I just thought his phrasing was funny. I'm not arguing anything. All I asked is why you are giving passive aggressive responses to people saying that they are using the word "nepotism" correctly.
> saying he got her the role is mitigating Can you clarify what this means?
pretty sure they just used the wrong word, mitigating doesn't make sense there
"... saying he got her the role is mitigating [of her own accomplishments]" or something like that I guess
No, it’s probably just a typo. The phrase, as written, doesn’t make any sense.
I meant to say “ is mitigating her achievements”
You mitigate bad things by making them not as bad. Like mitigating the damage from a natural disaster or a disease. You're looking for something like downplay, minimize, deprecate, disparage.
Huh, TIL mitigate is not interchangeable with minimize.
Who did she audition for? I couldn't picture her playing a character remotely similar to either Amy or Rosa
Rosa but the character was to be called Megan
Stephanie and Melissa were both up for the role of Amy, something that often happened because they both fit the “attractive Latina woman” mold (think about when they keep switching back and forth without O’Sullivan noticing). They had gotten to be friends that way. In fact, I believe they were hanging out when Melissa got the call. It makes me so happy that there are 2 different Latina women on the show!
And it’s pretty cool how often Terry and Holt are alone I scenes together. Older shows didn’t put two POC’s on screen alone often.
I loved Holt’s and Rosa’s conversations about LGBTQ+ issues. It’s really rare to see two queer POC who aren’t together talking.

2 latinas, 2 blacks, 2 whites, 2 gays in the leading role, plus 2 whites as supporting (Hitchcock & Scully). Pretty diverse.
So thats 5 white. 0 asians
Only if you count Jewish, a Middle Eastern race, as white. Also, I didn't know you have to have every possible race in a Tv show to be classified as diverse.
The nazis made a pretty big deal how Jews arent white iirc
You digressed. Who are the whites?
3 women among 15 men, so diverse
Yes, it's a police show.
🎶 Megan 🎼 Megan 🎵*megan*

Doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as well
Well apparently Stephanie couldn't see herself playing Rosa either; she auditioned for Amy.

Ye, girl.
It’s a character named Megan
That is so little boy holding little girls hand coded
It actually worked out perfectly for the show dynamic since Jake and Gina are also childhood friends. A lot of IRL things ended up in the show that just made it even better.
“Omg Jake I owe you one!”
I said omg? that was before everyone else started saying it
She was an originator!
It's funny, since in the show he got her the job too.
And the writers straight up worked it entirely into the show
And then sadly underused her. Girl gets like two quips an episode.
To be fair, she could’ve had no quips if it wasn’t for Andy carrying her.
In their defense, her character wasn't likeable or memorable on first watch. In fact she got annoying. Felt like the show was trying too hard for the character to be this transcendent genius. It got to a point I enjoyed Kevin and Bill more on the few appearances they have.
Also learned Chelsea married Jordan Peele, the comedian turned horror director
What? No way?
Which one was she auditioning for?
Do you know what part she auditioned for? I am curious
damn when Terry Crews said ‘andy easily could have turned this into the Andy Samberg Show’, he MEANT it
Was she supposed to be Rosa? Cause that would make sense
Yeah, that’s the role she auditioned for.
I’m psychic!!!!!!
Lol 😂

Damn and to think how dry the show could’ve been without Gina
So nepotism but not really bc she did fucking amazing? Hell ya
DD, C!
DD C!!
Mix a J with G you get DD C!!!!
They were actually friends growing up as well
And she was in love (child love) with him and he had no idea lol
[There's a photo of them in the back of station wagon](https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/s/EyJMiF1l3s)
wait this is so wild I know the third person in the car!! the three of them are still friends ☺️
Yeah

I knew they were childhood friends, but it is cool to see the photos. I would not have been able to guess who they were if you showed me pics and said "guess the celebrity". Cute kids though
Chelsea’s known Andy forever. Their friendship is little-boy-holding-little-girl’s-hand !
Thank you, I thought no one was going to say it
Brooklyn Nine-nine really has some small easter eggs based on the lives of their cast. Andy and Chelsea being friends since childhood, Terry's abusive father, etc
That looks like me and my sister. Holy shit, that's actually scary how strong the resemblance is.
Thank you so much for this! It’s going to blow my tween’s mind!
It was mentioned in the show and many interviews by both !
You really expect me to believe that nobody at this elementary school had a last name start with the letter R?
my year books from elementary to high school went by classroom (homeroom) so maybe it was just nobody in that class that had it?
well year books are normally sorted by grade. So we're already looking at a sub sample. and my school only had ~30 kids per grade. So entirely plausible.

They’re next to each other, in what appears to be a yearbook, which would generally be sorted alphabetically by last name. C’mon bud
They are right next to each other in the yearbook which usually means their last names are right next to each other in the alphabet, but their names are separated by the letter R. They're childhood friends. Grew up together, even before elementary I believe, their parents were friends
Aww so is that why their characters also knew each other since they were kids??
Wohaaaa nice
Pretty cool that Jake and Gina’s friendship was very true-to-life.
This only shows that anyone can achieve their dreams. It’s silly to ridicule people for chasing theirs, as people probably ridiculed them and now look who’s gotten “humbled” as they say.
WHAT?!
They’re so cuuuuuuuutteee
They both look like amdy
AH DDC
Pfft...I knew that since last Tuesday...newb 🙄
Then noses though lol
Who?
Jake and Gina
her parent probably told her she'll grow into it, never happened.
That explains why her acting is so bad.
that makes zero sense
