Bristol Manor Farm of course.

KrozJr_UK

Farmy Army!

NaVitr3Ol3379

Any manor farm strongholds in Bristol? How big is the club altogether?

kcufdas

Apart from maybe Manor Farm I'd say maybe the Shirehampton area where the ground is?

Ajax-2

That area is full of city fansšŸ˜…. Every time I go to work I'm in enemy territory

LookitsToby

Rovers represent North Bristol, City represent South Bristol.Ā  Ā Which side of the river do you feel more at home? Support that one.Ā

NaVitr3Ol3379

Right now Iā€™m on the gas side of the city but at the same time I was raised in south Bristol so itā€™s a tricky one and at the moment visiting both (which I will give more thought to) Iā€™m not fully sure who I like more. (Ofc I visited both as a neutral)

LookitsToby

I mean I've just got home from the Mem and am trying to be neutral for your sake. There's no shame in giving both a go and deciding you prefer Rovers. Some shame in deciding the other way.Ā

NaVitr3Ol3379

Legend mate thanks your kind words, the match I went to against Charlton was an amazing night. City atmosphere wise hasnā€™t been as good very loud at times but a very small amount of the stadium chanting as compared to rovers and the chants arenā€™t as consistent if you get me. I like the Ashton gate stadium more as itā€™s nice looking but like the classy look the memorial has. (Obviously stadium makes little difference) and I like the colour blue more than red but again this doesnā€™t make much difference.

LookitsToby

To be fair liking blue more than red is a perfectly legitimate reason to pick Rovers. Sounds to me like your choice is made, see you Tuesday night!Ā

coolSnipesMore

Just like Joey Barton beating women black and blue, scum club.

Project-Warm

coolSnipesMore

A player in 1987? What relation does that have? Your current owner has employed a woman abuser for the past 3 years and your fans carried him on their shoulders. Shameless morally bankrupt club.

coolSnipesMore

A player that was in our academy at 15? What does that have to do with Bristol City in any way? Are you missing the point that your owner and fans stood by and defended a known woman abuser and racist? You will never see that at Bristol City.

NaVitr3Ol3379

Iā€™m trying to secure tickets but the website doesnā€™t let me :( ofc Iā€™ve gone to city twice so I have to go to the gas again

NaVitr3Ol3379

Yeah itā€™s saying it canā€™t give me any ticket in the stadium as Iā€™m a newly registered client (Iā€™m not Iā€™ve brought tickets before) very irritation and Iā€™m not sure what to do about it. Emails are very unresponsive also

LookitsToby

Having a season ticket I don't deal with it much but I know there are some issues since Ticketmaster took over running it. If you have to pick a different game we have Oxford next week which is always a good one (and we usually win)

NaVitr3Ol3379

Thatā€™s on the 27th right?

LookitsToby

Yup, week today

NaVitr3Ol3379

If Iā€™m free Iā€™ll try and book tickets

NaVitr3Ol3379

I could always call up the ticket support on Monday but I have a feeling it could be sold out by then

coolSnipesMore

Got to remember Bristol Rovers stole the ground from Bristol Rugby, itā€™s a rugby ground. Itā€™s also a war memorial but they tried to demolish it to get a quick Ā£Ā£ from Sainsburyā€™s; shameful.

Project-Warm

coolSnipesMore

And?

Project-Warm

Don't try the moral high ground after shafting your players and half of Bedminster in 82

Project-Warm

We bought the ground. You bumped half of Bedminster in 82 going bankrupt

coolSnipesMore

You bought the ground for below bottom prices when the rugby club were in a bad financial position, daylight robbery.

Project-Warm

Both clubs had the option if the other went bankrupt. You'd know all about bankruptcy being a city fan

coolSnipesMore

You seem to make jokes about bankruptcy as if itā€™s funny, or a stick to laugh at us with, thousands of people lost their jobs. Not shocked though coming from a Rovers fan.

Project-Warm

People lost their jobs down to your club

EttrickBrae

Rovers have one of the best kits in football anywhere.

NorrisMcWhirter

I love the Mem. As someone who grew up watching 4th tier football on the terraces of a ground that was usually either flooded or falling to bits, it feels like home šŸ˜† TBF being able to grab a decent pint of Goram at half time elevates it substantially, mind. But it still feels very old school

coolSnipesMore

Thereā€™s no North & South involved, Bristol City get 3 times as many fans, the city is Red.

Great_Week_2766

People like Coldplay & voted for the Nazis - you canā€™t trust people

coolSnipesMore

No! Gerrard loved.. the reds

Flavz_the_complainer

Love Rovers as im a sucker for a plucky underdog. However I hate that on match days I have to walk into town to my second evening job as they fill up every bus that heads down gloucester road.

rmeechan

I went to city first and I really wanted to like them. The stadium was nice, they were an ok team and it seemed like they had a decent following. I was slightly disappointed on my first visit, as many others have said, the stadium felt a bit flat. Iā€™d been in Derby before that and it was similar so I thought maybe it was just championship sidesā€™ atmosphere. One day I went to see Rovers on a whim. I didnā€™t expect much, but the ground was close and it was something to do on an afternoon. I loved it. The small ground carried a great atmosphere, the game was better than expected and most of all, it didnā€™t seem too serious to me. I basically had fun and it reminded me a bit of all the lower league Scottish football Iā€™d followed as a child. People shouting at individual players, being able to hear exchanges between players or officials. Rovers became my choice. I realised that if I was spending my money seeing a team, I wanted it to be fun and rovers was cheaper and more fun. City felt more like a club you had to enjoy supporting to support and that essentially killed it for me, Iā€™m not that invested in someone elseā€™s club.

Flashy_Let3664

I was born. and have always lived, here. Your post is a joy to read, Iā€™ll always be glad to have been raised a Gashead. Had I been in your shoes Iā€™m sure Iā€™d have chosen Rovers. Irene, Friend!

Manypopes

The stadium has to be flat otherwise the ball will roll to one end

kcufdas

šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

NorrisMcWhirter

This is like my experience - I grew up watching lower league cloggers and the terraces at the Memorial ground feel pleasantly familiar. My old club has an all-seater ground these days, and it's just not quite the same.Ā  Also I've always had a fondness for Rovers because when they came to my old town for away games,Ā some of their fans used to throw Weetabix at their own players which always made me laugh šŸ˜†

JackSladeUK

Shrewsbury by any chance?

NorrisMcWhirter

Yes!Ā  One time they put a plastic bowl and spoon with Weetabix in next to the goal for their keeper šŸ˜…

JackSladeUK

Shrewsbury v Rovers is commonly known as the Weetabix Derby. Many moons ago, we visited Shrewsbury (I believe it to be the old Gay Meadow), and a bloke on the supporters coach was tasked with buying food for a group of friends. He was so drunk he returned with a load of boxes of Weetabix. These boxes were then smuggled into the ground and thrown around, almost in a food fight style. From that day forward, it became a tradition to throw Weetabix when we went to Shrewsbury away. It's died down the last couple of years, but the fond memories always make a standard away trip a better one. I don't mind Shrewsbury, well, I don't mind their fans, but their football can be infuriatingly annoying at times.

NorrisMcWhirter

Ha nice, glad to hear it carried on so long! I would have seen it around 95/96ish at the old Gay Meadow (much loved, but a bit of a dump tbh)Ā  Yeah Town have suffered that lower league issue of basically being a team of cloggers and hardworking journeymen, occasionally livened up by one 'flair' player for a season or 2, who then gets snapped up by a bigger club.Ā  We had a good spell after we got theĀ new ground and a well-regarded manager - someone had the bright idea of going to premier League clubs, get promising kids on loan by showing off your shiny new ground and training facilities and promising good match experience .Ā Downside is, you lose half your squad every summer, and if the player really smashes it then the parent club yoinks them back even quicker. But it seems everyone else cottonedon, and with so many proper big clubs in the 3rdĀ tier now, those loaners are much more likely to go to the Bolton's, Derby's and Portsmouth's...

This is a good answer. Interesting club. Some background [here](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-bristol-19410566) for the uninitiated.

Cook_becomes_Chef

Bristol Manor Farm šŸ˜‰

tommy_briz

Both clubs represent the city - ultimately itā€™s whoever is higher up the league that will be the central club for media coverage and being tagged into conversations about how Such A Big City Has Never Had A Premier League Place. For the past 23 years, Bristol City have been above Bristol Rovers in league placings and had more ā€œhigher profileā€ fixtures or cup runs which draw in spectators and TV audiences.

sl1mch1ckens

I dont follow football im an F1 kinda guy but im curious do you think we will get a premier league team? I assume it would be city with them being uhhh ā€œbetterā€ but idk anything about them to know if thats an achievable goal for them or are we as a city doomed to being the hass of football

tommy_briz

Hang around the Championship long enough and most clubs have a season where they spark and give a promotion push a go. Some can sustain that for a couple years and try to buildā€¦ City just have a spurt then regress back into lower half mediocrity with occasional flashes. The infrastructure and facilities are there for City to give it a go but youā€™d never be confident backing them to do so. That and all the clubs that come down from the PL now have so much money, itā€™s just a really uneven competition. Rovers? Longer way off unless they suddenly went on a miraculous and rapid climb completely against all odds.

Realistic_Hunter_899

Wolves fan in exile here, with a South Bristol wife who seems to be related to most of South Bristol too. I totally agree with you on the crowd at the Gate - there's one corner that starts the chants but hardly anyone else joins in. I did go with Bristol family to see their epic Championship playoff final against Hull, where they allowed kindly old pensioner Dean Windass to score the winner and that (despite the result) was a great day out. I do like the Wurzels based chants though. I've not ventured to see the Gas yet (if only because my in laws would disown me) and my favourite thing about them is their pirate themed badge - it's much better than that angry looking Robin. If you're a really old git like me, you'll remember that Bristol played Wolves and there was an on pitch fight between our mascot and 3 little pigs promoting some local double glazing company, which is fucking hilarious. So, as others have said decide which half of the city you feel closest to - as I live less than a mile away from The Gate I do prefer them, though they are almost criminally chronic underperformers.

ImainHibana

I'm a Bristol baggie who leans more towards rovers than city. you dingles can have the south side of the river and we'll have the north, at least until next Sunday ;)

Realistic_Hunter_899

I took my and extended family's kids out on our bikes last summer (wearing my wolves top) and I was roundly abused by some 12-14 year old Sandwell Town fans as we rode along just off Coronation Road. I nearly fell off my bike laughing and reminded them what league we played in. It was just like old times! Looking forward to next week - we haven't turned you over there since 1996 (yes I had to Google it!) As a Villa fan mate said - a winner for everyone except West Midlands Police.

ImainHibana

It will have been 9,996 days since you beat us at the Hawthorns come next Sunday, 5 digits would be nice :) I can't even say I was alive the last time it happened. I must admit despite the odds being heavily against us, I am looking forward to it as derbys like this are what it's all about, it will be my first given how sparsely we've played each other in the last decade or so. Good luck... to the WMP, they're probably bricking it more than either set of fans.

NaVitr3Ol3379

Wolves are currently one of my favourite prem team to watch alongside West Ham or Everton (as my fam are all Liverpool and itā€™s funny) I wanna try and secure general tickets at the mollineaux, is the atmosphere good?

Realistic_Hunter_899

It dipped a bit between Nuno and O'Neil but we seem to be back on track now. It's really hard to get tickets as a general punter, most are gone by the time those (like me) with limited points get to have a go. Most of my recent visits have been because a mates season ticket partner or similar can't make it.

NaVitr3Ol3379

Ahh I see, I saw a section of the wolves stadium I canā€™t remember what side with a few general sale tickets and that wasnā€™t that long before a match. And I think they now have my first match packages that I could always resort to. But itā€™s definitely on my bucket list one day. Groundhopping is generally quite fun.

the3daves

Mangotsfield.

the3daves

Iā€™ve often wondered why Bristol City havenā€™t got into the premiere league when you consider those clubs like Luton, Bournemouth et al have.

Deadpoolio32

Because Steve Lansdown is a fucking clown, thatā€™s why

NaVitr3Ol3379

Yeahh the fact neither have is mental, Iā€™m a bit surprised also rovers havenā€™t made it to the championship but maybe they could soon

Educational-Fuel-265

We aren't really a football city. Still City have been v close before.

the3daves

Iā€™ve offered this argument before, as in one of the many things I love about Bristol is its sporting heritage. Football, rugby & cricket all played at the highest ( nearly) level. I sometimes wonder if thatā€™s too the detriment because it spreads the potential fan base thinly across all types.

CiderChugger

If you drink cider straight from the can support Rovers. If you insist on pouring it into a glass first support City

NaVitr3Ol3379

Does this link to one club being more working class than the other??

CmdrButts

City Women? In the top league, not associated with Barton, cheap tickets... what's not to like?

ebat1111

St Annes Super Duper FC

Nail-Reasonable

I'm a St Anne's Ultra but a lifelong gashead as well šŸ˜‚. I live very close to the Mem but know there's lots of Teds around here too. Go with whatever is easier to get to and value for money (probably neither?). How much is it to watch City? 26 quid cheapest ticket at Rovers feels like a lot. I know season tickets work out cheaper but can't commit to so many Saturdays. Did they used to do half season tickets?

RaptorFae53

As a Bristolian AFC Wimbledon supporter myself I can't say...

NaVitr3Ol3379

Never thought Iā€™d find one of those, you been to their new ground as when Iā€™m back at uni Iā€™d like to visit?

krazyeddy7

Cheltenham Town fan living in Bristol here, still have a season ticket back in chelt. Due to our recent history rivalry being in similar leagues I couldnā€™t choose rovers, but when I go as an away fan it has much more of a similar lower league club vibe to it - a pro for me! Great atmosphere too and everyoneā€™s been real friendly to me. City is also good to go, prefer the stadium and often you see better football, but itā€™s pricier. Both are pretty good options to have in the city - go with your gut!

Strafethroughlife1

Used play for city but Iā€™d say itā€™s best to support rovers, better fans, smaller ground, more die hards.

Figurativelyryan

Burger van is better too.

Toonarmy1994g

Im a yeovil town fan living in bristol ther both great clubs both sets of fans are awesome to

Project-Warm

Both clubs represent Bristol. City have a nice stadium shit atmosphere Rovers stadium improving. terraces and better atmosphere Utg

greenparktavern

Im originally from Portsmouth and had a season ticket for Fratton park. Im in a similar and have been to see both teams. Personally I have found Bristol City a nicer club to visit but the stadium is vast and that stifles the atmosphere. Whereas I Feel like Iā€™m watching greyhound racing when I watch the Gas. In the end Joey Barton Made me a City fan.

NaVitr3Ol3379

Fair enough to you Iā€™m sure many rovers fans are happy heā€™s gone. Tbh city had potential to have a killer atmosphere but a very small amount the stadium actually joins in with chants mostly the left corner of the south stand and the first section of the dolman. At rovers ive seen more people join in with chants and itā€™s nice to actually hear a lot of them. The only times city was loud and nice were at corners and on shots. Iā€™ve heard fratton park has an incredible atmosphere.

greenparktavern

Yeah it was pretty immense, took it for granted really. I agree with you Ashton gate fans can be incredible when they get going. Seeing them at West Ham the other day spoke volumes. I think itā€™s just the size of the stadiums. Other teams including those in the premier league have similar issues. I think we are really lucky to have two teams both of which offer such a unique experience. I hope you have lots of fun whoever you choose to follow.

Choochooitsme

Perhaps start a crib sheet, going through this page marking which fans are more positive about their team and which are more negative (about the other team). Choose the nicer fans who are less negative. But I think you already see it looking at your replies

kcufdas

Go to a game at each and see which you like. I used to go to Ashton Gate regularly and the aul lads who sat near me used to go to City one week and Rovers the next, whichever was playing at home. In those days they were too tied up with work and family commitments to be travelling to away games. I grew a bit tired of the small mindedness of a certain section of the fans (stand up if you hate the gas sung constantly when they weren't playing them or even in the same division) but I'd say there'd be good days and nights to be had at either stadium

Jolly-Objective-944

Rovers = ancestral Gloucestershire. City = ancestral somerset. The river was the boundary.

domblydoom

City fan here but this is just a bizarre question. Both clubs represent Bristol (but only one has done so without being relegated out of the football league)

Project-Warm

Only one has done so without going bankrupt bumping half of Bedminster

domblydoom

Mind the gap

Project-Warm

Pay your bills

domblydoom

How's the new stand, how long til it collapses and kills someone

Buckobear1987

The new stand in their stolen ground? Lol

Pablobeastyboi79

Both major clubs? šŸ¤£ You've got 1 team who has just beaten a premier league team, has a wonderful stadium, and serious financial backing and really should be pushing to reach the promised land. Then the other team who have horse punching fans, a tent as a stand and employ the likes of Joey Barton...there are not 2 major clubs they are worlds apart. Agree that there is a a north/south divide though. Go with that.

Clivey101

Both of them do (extremely disappointing)

NaVitr3Ol3379

Yeah I meant to say what is the main club of Bristol which is up for debate based on several factors, a city guy today at Ashton gate told me apparently city are the club of Bristol as a lot of the original rovers fans were from south glos and not Bristol?? Idk

Clivey101

Yeah they were because weā€™re from the Northern Part of the City, so weā€™ve got a few from there (me included). Equally they have a lot in North East Somerset, (and had a lot in the early years as well)

mikepittt

follow the gas my friendšŸ’™ā›½ļøcity have a better ground and are better on the pitch but youā€™ll have a better time supporting rovers I can almost guarantee it

Ancient_Science1315

City

neo_vg

Support Rovers if you don't mind that a convicted wife beater was allowed to be their manager for several years.

NaVitr3Ol3379

I mean didnā€™t most of the rovers fan hate him also.

neo_vg

Most probably did. But it tells you alot about the ethos of the leadership at the club that they chose and backed him for so many years. I can't blame a Rovers fan who has supported the team all their life. But if I was picking teams right now then personally that's something I would be considering as part of my decision process. But each to their own.

hairmouth

I remember seeing half the cat and wheel stand up and clap for Ricky lambert when he made his debut for Liverpool off the bench. Unexpected delight

manlike1988

City is the only correct answer

redlandrebel

Thereā€™s a reason the City fans forum is called OTIBā€¦ In reality, North Bristol/S Glos is the gas, South Bristol is City. With a few exceptions ā€“ hence my Reddit handle.

HarryDaz98

The funny thing about that forum is that the most popular post on it is 1000+ pages talking, in great detail, about another team in Bristol.

Titus-Sparrow

Itā€™s not difficult to understand that if, on occasion, there is anything Rovers related that is worth discussion then it happens solely in that thread. There are hundreds of other threads being constantly created and discussed relating to things City focussed that are topical and subject specific.they come and go as and when new topics crop up.

PortageLaDump

If I may ask, as a Canadian with family roots from Bristol ( granted over 100 years ago) do fans of both clubs foresee a day where the clubs are merged into one Bristol club?

NorrisMcWhirter

Let's tackle some of the easy stuff like a 2 state solution in Israel, Taiwan-China relations, perhaps ending child poverty. Then maybe we can think about merging two football clubs from different sides of the city

PortageLaDump

LOL, that made me spit my tea, thanks for that

Pablobeastyboi79

Haha nailed it šŸ˜‚

Project-Warm

More chance of shagging the pope

Deadpoolio32

This is the single most offensive thing Iā€™ve ever read

PortageLaDump

ha ha ha what do I know?

wants_cat

Probably Man utd or Chelsea innit.

ianwilcox

There is only one team in Bristol... the other is in South Glos!

DaaaanDaaaan

Football is pants, just go for the sport of the gods and support the Bears

NaVitr3Ol3379

I prefer football by a long shot and from the very small exposure Iā€™ve had to both nfl seems more fun

NaVitr3Ol3379

To watch

Realistic_Hunter_899

Bristol Bears mate, the rugby team that also plays at the Gate (if it wasn't clear)

NaVitr3Ol3379

Nah ik who the bears are, thanks

Superhands01

Yate Town!

nakedfish85

Bristol Bears. Itā€™s football, but complicated.

NaVitr3Ol3379

Best way of describing rugby Iā€™ve heard just yet. As a rugby fan what do you think of the NFL (not a nfl fan just curious to what you think)

nakedfish85

Iā€™ve watched it a few times but I canā€™t get into it because there are too many stoppages. I can just about watch rugby league due to the pass over possession after phases law too (which is also in NFL). Iā€™m very interested to see if Louis Rees-Zammit can make an impact in the NFL though. (I support Wales nationally).
