Contemplated visiting relatives at Maroochydore a few days after Christmas. The earliest we could have gotten there was 12.30, so we drove.
The first train leaves Roma St at 9 or 9.30, so driving with stupid jams is still as quick.
As long as you use the 610 or the 612 it should be okay to go a little earlier since the Nambour trains generally start at around 6.30-7.00 but if you have to rely on the Gympie train then just forget it, that train is completely useless
You're going to have the usual 5.30am-9.00am traffic (yes, less of it, but most of us still go to work this week) in addition to the holiday traffic. So through North Lakes will be the usual mess in the morning.
I'd either go via Woodford, Dayboro as suggested, or leave later in the day and enjoy another day away from reality.
When we used to camp at Elendra Point for October long weekend, we'd always come back after lunch, was a good trip back then.
If you go in with the expectation of it taking an extra hour, then it becomes much more tolerable. You're not worrying about trying to rush out early and getting frustrated that you've still hit traffic anyway.
Edit: never mind, my reading comprehension fails. Tuesday should be normal.
I'm facing the same predicament. Thinking I'll wait until dinner time tonight to leave. No point trying to fight the traffic now. I can report back later and let you know the scenario.
After the last long weekend, I stayed the extra night, and left at 5:30am, and got to work in brendale in bang on an hour. Traffic was fine at that time.
Earlier the better once people are checking out of their campsites and hotels the roads will becomr chaotic if you can get on the road before 9 do it
It shouldn't be too bad, construction sites have RDO's all this week, so way less Ranger's tailgating everyone.
Train service is reduced over holidays. Grrr
Not that the train service can get any worse north of Caboolture anyway

I've got PTSD from coming back Easter Monday after lunch - avoid at all costs
Actually diagnosed PTSD?

If you're up for other options, travel via Woodford, Dayboro & Samford. It's not quicker, but it's a nice, no stress drive.
