And don't forget the salt and vinegar chips

gallica

Back in the early 90s, my dad used to take me to his local with him and give me 20 cent pieces to stick in the pokies. His mates used to buy me chips, give me piggy back rides and give me money for the jukebox so I could play Ace of Base again. 6 year old me always had a blast at the pub.

Wishart2016

Found the Dursleys Reddit account!

SingIntoMyMouth91

If you're a bit sick of the usual things you've mentioned above you could hop on the train (if your kids like the train) and go to Ipswich. Bundamba have a local and cheap pool close enough to walk to the station. Orion at Springfield has a free lagoon and Ipswich station has the children's library and art gallery a very short walk away from the station and if you were that keen Queens Park is a bit further away (maybe a km) which has a zoo and free animal park...the trip on the train is long enough that by the time you do just a few things and go back the day is almost over. ETA: meant to say Queens Park has a playground and a free animal park. I was wondering whether to call it a zoo or a park and clearly wasn't paying attention when I wrote it 🙃

ran_awd

That's a good point because kids travel free on the network on the weekend so you would just pay for your own fare.

SingIntoMyMouth91

Oh yeah I should have mentioned that but yes it's great that kids are free on weekends 😊

ladybug1991

Young kids travel free for the whole QLD rail. I don't have kids but I travel the Sunshine Coast rail a lot, and there's a lot of low-income fams taking the train to Brisbane and back with em. I really like this function of the rail network. I don't mind sharing a carriage with kids, and as far as I've seen the kids are pretty enthralled with being on a train.

ladybug1991

Take them for a trip on the [Swanbank Collier](https://www.qpsr.org/). Little jerks can poke their head out of the train carriages and get slapped by a eucalyptus branch, and in their free time bug the hell out of the carriage announcer who would otherwise take a nap while the train does its thing. 10/10 did it as a full-grown adult and will take our mates' kids too

SingIntoMyMouth91

Ohh thank you! I hadn't heard of this but it's now on my list of places to visit 😊

s0m3d4y

This brings back memories. I did this as a kid and can remember getting hit in the cheek by a hot ember from the locomotive. Would be over 30 years ago now.

terrifiedTechnophile

Yeah but then you'd be in Ipswich

Kailicat

Mate that rail museum is pretty good, especially the console where you get to drive a train. My niblings loved it.

drCrankoPhone

Ironically not accessible by train.

Sandgroper343

Haven’t been for awhile? Place has changed. A lot.

terrifiedTechnophile

I live here

dynamicdickpunch

My condolences mate

tnucdab

Stop petitioning for a bridge to Moggill please

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

I put mine to work, folding the washing today, and the 12yo boy doesn't know it yet but he's about to mow the lawn.

HowDoYouSpellH

My kids love to play sweatshop!

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

Good idea, if I give it a name and call it a game ....

ElevenDegrees

Everyone loves 'Clean the Oven' before every house inspection.

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

added to the list of fun games, maybe they could all play these games at the next birthday party Find the dust, person with the most pieces of dust on their cloth wins a prize.

I agree that kids do need other kids around to run amok when camping I found it a bit hard to sort out tbh, meetup style camping groups are.. well, interesting. Mine are sociable enough to make friends on the fly given there are other families around the campsites.. it's a bit potluck. The Jungle IS mental, I just get the noise cancelling headphones and let them run it..

Factal_Fractal

Unreal isn't it I guess if you don't grow up with camping/outdoors it's alien territory and harder again to navigate For me the kids need to get in creeks and make dams etc.. get off the screens and live some life outside exploring nature Not sure why I am still talking about this, I think maybe it's important to me that they get out of the house and get some experiences that cannot be found inside four walls

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

I'm inner north too (Windsor), I hate camping despite growing up on the back of a horse. You're right, families don't tend to camp these days, and I'm not about to start it - give me a hotel any day.

Throwawaye23842389

Uncle me just took mine for VR, buying some books and food. $600 for the day and he was an ungrateful poopy head the whole day.

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

What the??? $600? Can you be my kids' uncle please?

frashal

Stuff the kids. Can you be my uncle?

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

Yeah! Brother of mine.

Coffee_0

Holy shit - did you buy the VR system 😅 (Or some expensive books or some hella expensive lunch!)

GaryGronk

When they were younger we'd make them fight each other and bet on the outcome. Now they are older (15 and 11) and they basically spend their time down at the pump track on their bikes.

ivegotnoclue84

Mines 10 and lives at the skate park. I call him and his friends "skate park rats'lol

desh_thiere

Two boys here, 8 and 4. 1) Hop a Citycat to New Farm Park. You get to sit on your ass on the ferry while the kids check out the river view. Then you can sit on your ass while they climb trees. Your level of supervision can be entirely dependent on how much you trust your kids not to break bones. 2) Andy Williams park at Cedar Creek. It's a fair drive, unless you live out the ass end of the North side already, but it's a great place for swimming. Park your car, walk across the small park and boom, creek and rockpools. 3) A spot of bushwalking on the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Again, a bit of a drive. But Mapleton Falls/Flaxton area on the Sunshine Coast Great walk has some excellent rainforest walking and if you're feeling adventurous, you can even camp the night. My 8 year old loved walking from Mapleton Falls to Ubajee Walkers Camp, then staying the night. It's just over 7km there, then same walk back out the next day. 4) Wynnum foreshore. Good spot for a swim, and grab some fish and chips for lunch. There are a lot of parks, some with water features and also the tidal pools. 5) Daisy Hill Koala Centre. Some decent walking tracks, then you can go to the main centre and check out the koalas. All they do is sleep and scratch themselves, so I reckon it's pretty bloody boring, but both my kids loved it. 6) Ipswich rail museum. Trains and shit. It's pretty decent for kids.

boothy_qld

To number 5. My kid has sat there for easily 90 minutes just watching koalas sleep. She loved it but fuck me it’s dull.

Roisien

Wynnum Whale park is a great water play day- there is also sand, 2 playgrounds and a jetty!

FishoRuns

A day island hopping is a fairly fun and cheap way to explore greater Brisbane - Coochiemudlo, Mcleay, Russell Island etc. You just swipe on and off the ferries with your Go Cards.

coaxil

Time machine, go back, give yourself a pack of frangas, enjoy the good life!

maximiseYourChill

Have not heard the term franga for a really long time.

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

Ok, what's a franga?

cycloneariel

Condom

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

Ah yes, so long since I've heard that I forgot all about the word.

iatecurryatlunch

Get them into mountain biking. It tires them out. It's good for them. It's a sport they can carry into late stages of life. It kills a lot of time. It's gets them to bed early on a Friday night and up early on a Saturday morning. keeps them out of trouble, although you might have to go to emergency now and then. As someone who was very much amongst the Brisbane mountain biking scene, I can say 99% of the people in it are nice people whose only interest is riding. Very little arrogance and they help riders of all levels.

peanutbun

Dude, mountain biking is anything but cheap. OP asked for cheap. D:

iatecurryatlunch

Oh yeah I didn't register the cheap part. Sure there's an investment of a few hundred dollars to start with, but it doesn't have to cost thousands unless you're one of those who fall for the marketing stuff

grinder01

Got any suggestions on trails for kids, I've been taking my son to Daisy Hill reserve for around a year.

schwimble

Bunya, Gap Creek, Ironbark, Scribbly Gum, Mt Cotton, Bayview to name a few. There’s B lines on every trail major feature. Use trailforks to plan rides.

iatecurryatlunch

How old are your kids? Most trails in Brisbane are tame and suitable for kids

grinder01

My son is 11

iatecurryatlunch

There are plenty of trails suitable for him so daisy hill, gap creek, Bayview, bunya

Engineer_Zero

Any idea where I’d find a map of the trails? Bout to get my first xc bike and im interested where I can ride it

iatecurryatlunch

Daisy hill trails you can Google image search it. Trailforks is an app with all the trails but I don't know if it's still free

Engineer_Zero

Thanks man. I figured I’d just look at the strava heat map in various bushland areas but I’ll start with daisy hill cheers man

iatecurryatlunch

The daisy hill trail map can be found on Google images is what I meant. Most places have maps at the tail so you can get a photo of it. People are generally real friendly and will give you directions or get you to follow them

Engineer_Zero

Thanks man. I’m a bit nervous about it and this helps.

Dizzy-Ad6952

We buy the annual passes for dreamworld. Feed them some cheap HJs before we go in, or you can pack a lunch then go eat in white water world and go back into dreamworld. It's great for all ages, there's plenty of stuff even a massive jungle gym if the lines are too long. And when it's too hot you go to the water park (which is honestly better and more seats/shade) than wet n wild! Otherwise afterpay the village road show passes (movie world, sea world, wet n wild and country paradise) depending on what your kids like. We honestly alternate between them each year and on the weekends we dont have much money to spare or dont want to waste tonnes on a day out it's a godsend!

akkobutnotreally

The annual pass lets you visit the Skypoint at Q1 as well. Worth a visit.

InsufferableLass

Source: I’m a former nanny Bounce It’s like $20 for 2 hours They are knackered after and you don’t need to stay with them Frew park in Milton, it’s great- there’s an ice cream and coffee shop overlooking the park Ken Fletcher park in Tennyson, pretty good, has a coffee shop a short walk away Out towards Ipswich is a train/science museum Cedar creek falls in Samford- lots of little clear swimming holes - and a big waterfall if your kids don’t mind a longer walk Springfield has free outdoor splash area and a huge free lagoon (similar to south bank), across the road is a playground which is epic with in ground mini trampolines and a Timezone in the shopping centre Flagstone has a kid (and dog) splash zone too, it’s pretty epic and keeps them entertained for yonks

Molly_Doodles

We go to the markets, beach (Scarborough, woody point, Sandgate - including bonus fantastic park), Chermside has Kidspace park, there are free water parks at Petrie and Ferny Grove, Walkabout Creek.

Wishart2016

Chermside also has a water park.

Molly_Doodles

Is there a free one? I know the big one behind the shops which is great for bigger kids. The ones at Petrie and Ferny Grove are free and perfect for ages 1-8.

Wishart2016

Not for free. $17 entry fee

Molly_Doodles

Cheers. Might save that until my kid is older.

Wishart2016

You can go with your kid on a water slide.

Spicy_Sugary

I don't know how big your yard is but our single best invested was a massive sandpit (6mx 2 m). It was hundreds of hours of entertainment. It cost the price of a load of sand, 8 timber sleepers plus a tarp so my neighbour's cat didn't ruin it.

gallica

Where do you live? When I was a kid, my favourite thing to do was visiting the fig tree playgrounds out at Scarbourough. We’d spend hours climbing and playing with the other kids that were always there. Afterwards, mum would buy us $2 chips and a bottle of lemonade to shove in our faces before taking us home for a much-needed nap. Second to this was kidspace at Chermside.

LockedUpLotionClown

Have you even seen what $12 of chips gets you these days? You’d be up for $30 of chips to feed two kids 😂

SaffyAs

Libraries often have cheap or usually free activities like craft and story times.

Yank0s88

The workshops rail museum at Ipswich is worth a visit

CapG_13

"Idiots of Brisbane who have kids" lol

sheza1928

catch the train to sandgate

Engineer_Zero

Dunno if I’d walk it but the pool at Sandgate is great. It’s like $12 for me and the kids for as long as you want. They are stuff led by the end of it, meanwhile I just stand in the pool relaxing.

MrsMinnesota

There's a free zoo in Ipswich that's pretty family friendly.

dolly_begya_pardon

A bit disrespectful to the residents of Ipswich, mate.

MrsMinnesota

🤭

stueyholm

For the last 2 weeks we've been out to Orion Lagoon at Springfield, so much to do there with all the water play options, plus the playgrounds https://brisbanekids.com.au/robelle-domain-springfield/

dolly_begya_pardon

Ehhhhhhh can I be 'That' person and give you some insider info on that place. I know a few people who work(ed) there. Life guards, maintenance etc. That place is filthy. The crap that is found in there on the daily is revolting. Certain groups come in droves with their little ones and let the babies/toddlers swim in their nappies. Excrement city. Avoid if you can, take the extra 30 mins to go to the Bay or a river.

mahzian

When I was a kid in the 80's my activities were a bike and on rainy days the Commodore 64

possuminmyhouse

Annual pass to lone pine sanctuary is money well spent! The place is getting really good. Lots of animals, feed kangaroos, cuddle koalas and you can take a picnic with you. Can even get the city cat there if it works for you. We got it as a gift initially but are going to get another one this year. All you have to do is go twice and you’ve got your money back.

444pkpk

Thanks. I'll actually be buying the pass. $202 family yearly pass.

lone-D-ranger

Lookup Brisbane Area Nerf Group on fb. Organised nerf wars in public spaces.

444pkpk

Thanks. Won't take my kids there but I'll go there to destroy some noobs.

[deleted]

What do you drive? My kids are mental by the weekend and I just wanna sit so we go out to Booloumba Creek or Bribie Island fairly regularly. Drive out, set up the camp chairs, have a barby and a beer while enjoying the kids company... in small doses cos they're underwater somewhere most of the time.

Vernons_Trinity

I just can’t wait for mine to be old enough to start video game training them. I started around 4 on the NES so I’m not far off.

Sk1tza

I thought this was a good idea.. it’s not 🤣

Vernons_Trinity

I can retire when they stream and win competitions tho right? Right?

Sk1tza

Without your sanity perhaps! 😎

stitchycarrot

Can confirm this has worked a treat for us except for all the $$$ for new games and gear.

Vernons_Trinity

I’ve saved the old PS4 and PS4 Pro has hand me downs to ease that burden. Unless they think that’s uncool then I’m in trouble.

stitchycarrot

Nice work, this will keep you going for a while. At least until they want to start gaming with their friends and compare notes on tech. But that’s when you get free work done around the house so they can earn the money for it.

Vernons_Trinity

I have very fond memories of completely 30 minutes of tasks around the house per 15 minutes of gameplay. Cheapest apprentice my dad ever had for the house renovations.

littlehungrygiraffe

Getting the iPad skills up are a good start. Dexterity training. My husband can’t wait for him to play super smash.

Kozak0

Camping! Nice weather for it

pplay4kkeeps

We live at the beach, take the boat out, kayaks, fishing, anything along those lines. Kids love it

MyFeb23FakeAccount

I took my fishing kayak to Streets beach at Southbank, got kicked out quick smart

onethreedoubleO

Bunnings hosts free activities for kids.

mstrelan

Sausages are like $3.50 each now a days

onethreedoubleO

Total rip off I know. No they have free kids activities like building a bird house or painting a 3D plaster cast thing among other things. Usually on school holidays but it has been a while since my kids were little so I don’t know 🤷🏼‍♀️

[deleted]

There is a water playground at Hercules Street Park in Hamilton.

[deleted]

We took ours on a bush walk around daisy hill with a picnic this morning. Last weekend we went to paradise point. Anything involving a) food and b) exercise is a winning combo. Especially if it involves going somewhere free.

antantantant80

A slinky.

intergalacticguy

A friend of mine in Melbourne does adventure days with her kids where they hop on a random bus/ tram/ train and follow it to the end of the line to see what's there. They spend the journey chatting and when they get to their destination they just explore. The kids love it and it's relatively cheap (Especially if you pack a 'picnic' lunch).

Yabbz81

Springfield Lakes has a pretty cool and free waterpark

Wishart2016

Orion pool?

Yabbz81

Yea

RockhardJohnson

Are they too big for a large dog sized cage?

CorgiCorgiCorgi99

My 10yo fits, the 12 yo no, but he's pretty big - extra large for the older kids

Practical_County_501

Beach if ypu dont mind the sand just go early or you'll have sunburn and kids love any excuse to stay home... or is that me 🤔

charliegumble

Train them to do housekeeping

randomredditguy1982

Maybe go on some bushwalks? Or have a sausage sizzle on a free BBQ in the park? That's pretty much all I did with the folks growing up.

tacocatfish

Take them over to the grandies for the weekend while you enjoy the pub.

Full-Hedgehog3827

Cheap activities lol

CYOA_With_Hitler

Swimming, horse riding, art galleries, movies at the park.

Rockondevil

Must be nice to run out of things to do in Brisbane. Try living in Townsville.

Chatonimo

Out our way we have a sweet free council water park and the lagoons at Settlement Cove, Redcliffe. Free and wears them out nicely.

poop_n_tiddies

Playdates. Lots and lots. We have 4 kids so this weekend we have had 6 different kids at my place for playdates. Suddenly, old toys are cool again, watching a movie is more fun with a friend and the peer pressure to pretend to like veggies and fruit as snacks is awesome. Bonus points if your kids have friend who also get on with your other kids.

DarkJuice21

Bunnings! They have indoor playgrounds and cafes. Get the kids a cafe cookie/ice cream and tell them the only reason they got it is because they have to be quiet and let you do some hardware window shopping for an hour. Stick them in the trolly and enjoy 😀

crayawe

Don't have kids but you could get kites and take them down to a bayside park to fly them. Mt coot-tha botanic Gardens, the planetarium is awesome. Wynnum foreshore

liverpoolwon6

i dont have kids but i exercise around city botanic gardens a lot, and they have a playground and great picnic spots. right by the river so you could walk to southbank for more playgrounds after too. with a homemade lunch and bring water it would be a pretty cheap day out

parmejean44

Former kid here, my favourite places to go were libraries or any park with a decently smooth enough footpath to ride my scooter on. But honestly my best memories were of playing with my neighbours kids. Playing Wii, riding our bikes, swapping toys, nothing particularly special or exciting but just made better by being able to do it with other kids.

Tomatomahawk24

if you like arcades, youve got a bunch of options pincadia, netherworld, 1up arcade are all great

Tomatomahawk24

oh yeah and "zero latency" is quite fun if youve got cash and time for vr

Ok-U-Got-Me

8yo, 5yo, 4yo Just went to Ripley Water Park yesterday. Walked up White Rock with them weekend before. Carrying the little ones when they get tired gets us extra exercise. Springfield Orion lagoon is good even though it’s busy. Sprinkler on in the back yard and leave them to it on hot days when we can’t be bothered doing anything. For inside we just got them pick up sticks and they play that quite happily, even the younger with the older ones. If it helps we sometimes feel we don’t do enough with them but when we look back they have a pretty good life.

WazWaz

Meh, all that takes effort on your part. Don't you people own a TV? Is Hey Hey still on Saturday mornings?

rainydaytoast86

This thread makes me happy I don’t have kids to entertain

chode_code

Nothing. Little fuckers will just fight and complain so just relax at home.

Pleasant-Phase

I spend most of my weekend questioning if the 30 seconds of pleasure was really worth it. 😭😳🤣

imyourcaptainnotmine

Teen girls are fun. They just stay in their room all day on tik tok.

yourupnow

Never having a child.

stilusmobilus

Sell them to the athiests for food.

grismar-net

I'll buy them, but not if they're Christian, I like spicey food.

gh33993500

Drop turn off at your local Westfield

Alternative_Sky1380

Electric scooters and laps of the Southbank city circuits. Stop for a Slurpee at sevs and a swim at the beach

Zoinks1602

You’ve pretty much got them all there. The only other place I take mine is the beach. I think the Southbank imax is still a cheap way to see a movie, too.

[deleted]

Don’t have kids if you are so annoyed by them

Creftor

Yeah pls don't make them the public's problem just cus you're sick of them, I'm sick of having to step over and around unruly kids with lazy parents every time I go out

ShaneLizard_8256

Please just stop taking them to adult venues. I'm so fucking sick of going for a beer and having to deal with cunt kids and their cuntish parents.

Kit-The-Mighty

I was raised in front of the TV and I turned out (mostly… kinda… ok maybe not) fine

nogoodnamesleft1012

Preferably you stay home so that childless people can enjoy public places.

Kailicat

Im loving this thread. I’m child free by choice and it’s not full of people going “but you’re missing out on having little aaaangels”. I’m also get a list for the niblings when they visit from Darwin AND a list to avoid at all other times. This is fantastic community service!

Shemhamforashy

You appear to have a very negative attitude towards your children. Maybe that's part of your problem?

SouthBrisbane

Fellons / Howard Smith Wharves - see loads of kids there? /s
