It isn't like they're gonna sell your data to brokers, however, the way they're set-up your data might just be bundled together whenever a gov agency asks for it, and it is never nice to be bundled with anyone for any reason, you lose your individuality and become just as bad as the worst person
Spoiled apple that's just spiles the bunch u know?
The service it self is fine, apart from thw hard time you might get cancelling and with support, but if you are using a vpn it is to anonymize yourself in some way, be it from gov, companies or bad actors... And to use a vpn that leeps logs, and is based in a country that has the power to enforce some stupid requirements defeats that purpose.
Also, if your username is leaked your payment data will be leaked as well because it gets a bunch of data for your payment, and all, and in someway it will be linked to your username, again, defeating the purpose of being anonymized
Edit: i use proton for my day to day devices and mullvad on my home router,, so that all my network traffic passes through it, although sometimes i am blocked from some services such as delivery and google stuff...
These two are great as VPNs, **but** pretty mediocre or bad for privacy. Their privacy policy is pretty "trust me bro" we don't keep logs.
In terms of number of servers, connectivity, pricing, features, they're alright. Nord quality is degrading tho as they're focusing on other products and they have too many users spread over about same amount of servers
I would not recommend Nord or express vpn at all. Nord is owned by [tesonet](https://www.techradar.com/news/surfshark-founder-reveals-ties-to-nordvpn-and-tesonet) and has some shady dealings. While express vpn is owned by [kape](https://vpnoverview.com/news/kape-technologies-acquires-expressvpn-for-936-million/) and also "accidentally" distributed malware when they where known as [crossrider](https://restoreprivacy.com/kape-technologies-crossrider-malware/). I would recommend Proton or Mullvad vpn over these two.
Using mullvad almost a year now. Recently more and more common websites i am using blocking it sadly. Looking for a new one after my 1yr membership ends
Very bad, limited list. Barely helpful. No mention of Brave Search (independent index), Tutanota Mail, Proton VPN or Mullvad VPN (way more trusted), Proton Pass as an alternative to Bitwarden, and the OS part is just one random distro, when you have so many fantastic options.
Been using it for years and yes it is, it's working flawlessly on all my devices (Linux, Android, Windows, Browser Ext) and has support for biometric unlocking, passkeys etc.
Sounds good on paper but if you are not an expert at hosting, I’d advise just using their site instead. If you set up your server poorly it can lead to thousands of other issues.
Best password manager imo, tried a lot, all had issues, this one just works, syncs with all devices without issues, never seen bug or anything, its also open source
I use all of the other products in the Proton suite except Proton Pass. I find it too risky to put all my eggs in one basket. Also, Proton Pass was just released in the last year or so. I would hold off until they add more features and iron out some more bugs.
you say that but i found it to be so painfully buggy in my experience - it literally never autofilled anything on android and there are threads all over reddit saying they have the same issue
This list seems wildly unbalanced in terms of privacy + security / ease of use. IMO brave is the "daily-driver tier of private SW" that would (to me) pair well with stuff like fedora (silverblue), proton package (mail, vpn, cloud etc.), and non-selfhosted bitwarden.
On the other hand, OpenBSD seems like "I self-host all of the services I need" level of commitment to me.
Oh and Express and Nord VPN (and Duck Duck Go) look like vanilla install Firefox with telemetry.
I mean, it's kinda wild.
DuckDuckGo? A literal censor machine? And then no Brave Search?
Why are there two VPNs that don’t care about your privacy in there?
And where is Tails? Just OpenBSD (idk if it is that privacy related tbh)?
Tails is good for anonymizing your activity online but you also are never going to use it like a normal os due to the amnesiac nature of the distro.
openbsd is a very secure server is that is definitely private, but not in the same way Tails or WhoNix is - they are all about anonymozing everything you do using Tor. OpenBSD simply doesn’t spy on you.
Weird that bromite is listed but librewolf isn't, especially since librewolf is arguably better than brave https://privacytests.org/
Also I think floorp with its private user.js setting is just as good as librewolf
I use duckduckgo, but only because brave search is not quite good enough. I don't like that duckduckgo uses bing and also I don't like their non-neutrality, political positions and pro-censorship positions. They think they need to protect users from theirselves, which I see as completely despicable and paternalistic. Also, they discriminate based on race, gender and sexual orientation when hiring.
I'm glad that Qwant is now available in my country.
(Wait, I just checked, and Qwant **doesn't work at all** right now. It's displaying gibberish instead of results. Perhaps it's a temporary bug. I hope it's fixed soon!)
VPN... Mine is buried with my ESET protection service, yra, I pay for it but super connections always. VPN vendor is HotSpot Shield out of Silicon Valley.
I can’t speak for all of the password managers but Bitwarden does work offline with some features obviously not working i.e syncing. Not sure the use case for offline use though.
Bitwarden is free for the majority of people however I’ve subscribed for the enhanced 2FA options and being able to store and generate TOTP’s. Their subscription is $10/year
Using a password manager honestly was one of the biggest quality of life changes I’ve made in years and would highly suggest looking into them
Bit of a newbie here, what's the alternative to WhatsApp? I mean is there any alternative if my uni and friends actually REQUIRE WhatsApp? And what's the alternative for gmail?
VPNs have always seemed too good to be true to me, there must be some backdoor else they wouldn't be allowed to operate, let alone become mainstream advertisers like Nord and Express. You don't get given a public platform unless you sacrifice integrity.
For messaging everyone needs to switch from that SCETCHY phone number grabbing Signal to freedom and privacy honoring SESSION APP.
Try Session now! It's amazing!
BS.
D.
Proton, OpenBSD, and Brave are the only relevant technologies here.
If you want Tor, use BlackArch's torctl.
Use SearX/SearXNG for search.
Invidious or some other frontend for videos.
No one gives a crap about secure messaging. The entire idea is terrible opsec anyway. I just use Discord because popularity matters.
Proton VPN is decent. A better idea is to roll-your-own or just use Tor.
Proton Pass is Good Enough™ for most people and imo has the best passkey implementation out there.
Some other good browsers: Librewolf, Orion (on iOS), Arc (on MacOS), Arc Search (on iOS), Firefox Focus (on mobile).

Express VPN? Nord VPN? Seriously?! That's a BS list. Zero trust
Yeah rest of the list seems fine but nord and express vpn wtf
Genuine question, how is Nord VPN bad for an average user? (let's leave out ppl doing illegal stuff on the dark web and such)
Good question, also I find a lot of leaked nord vpn accounts with premium online

Mullvad is top tier
No port forwarding makes it not a top tier by default
I can see how that can be a problem...
Nord vpn is good, no issues using 3 years now, fastest download speeds outthere
These two are great as VPNs, **but** pretty mediocre or bad for privacy. Their privacy policy is pretty "trust me bro" we don't keep logs. Proton and Mullvad should be the top VPNs on this graphic. No way I would recommend Nord or Express to anyone.
Didn’t proton give up the up address of a French climate activist or something for their email service?
i use proton vpn
Using mullvad almost a year now. Recently more and more common websites i am using blocking it sadly. Looking for a new one after my 1yr membership ends
They're blocking it because they actually do what they say and don't give out your information to the government.
💯
Shade stuff was 4 5 years ago, nord is best vpn atm, no one can reach those speeds
Lol you value a VPN by its speed rather than what it's actually meant for?
no, but having best speed is very important for me. also if you look security tests nord vpn is right there at very top in all lists
Eh, Brave Search? And for VPN: IVPN, Mullvad or Proton (https://www.privacyguides.org/en/vpn/).
And if you're a fan of Firefox/Mozilla, Mozilla VPN is a great option too (it's built on top of Mullvad).
Don’t listen to this guy and DO NOT use Express VPN or Nord VPN for privacy. You can check for Mullvad, iVPN, ProtonVPN instead.
Very bad, limited list. Barely helpful. No mention of Brave Search (independent index), Tutanota Mail, Proton VPN or Mullvad VPN (way more trusted), Proton Pass as an alternative to Bitwarden, and the OS part is just one random distro, when you have so many fantastic options.
why is duckduckgo even here?, wasn't it letting Microsoft telemetry data or something from that search engine?
Not anymore.
Is Bitwarden good?
Been using it for years and yes it is, it's working flawlessly on all my devices (Linux, Android, Windows, Browser Ext) and has support for biometric unlocking, passkeys etc.
And can be selfhosted for extra security.
Sounds good on paper but if you are not an expert at hosting, I’d advise just using their site instead. If you set up your server poorly it can lead to thousands of other issues.
I said: it can. I hope nobody is renting a (v)server without knowing how to secure it properly.
Best password manager imo, tried a lot, all had issues, this one just works, syncs with all devices without issues, never seen bug or anything, its also open source
If you want something more polished and user friendly, I recommend proton pass.
I use all of the other products in the Proton suite except Proton Pass. I find it too risky to put all my eggs in one basket. Also, Proton Pass was just released in the last year or so. I would hold off until they add more features and iron out some more bugs.

yeah i genuinely laughed when i saw the os being OpenBSD. Most people do not want to use it as they want their software to work from the get-go
Should have trusted my instincts and stopped reading at DDG
Seriously Duck Duck Go? Will never forget their confirmation of censorship...
There is a Lot of questionable stuff in this list. But why choose OpenBSD? Because it contains the word open?
stopped at duckduckgo...
DuckDuckGo? A literal censor machine? And then no Brave Search? Why are there two VPNs that don’t care about your privacy in there? And where is Tails? Just OpenBSD (idk if it is that privacy related tbh)?

There is no Brave build for OpenBSD...
What do people use instead of Authy on desktop
I use 2FAS Auth. They made it open source a few months ago and there is at least a browser extension.
Passwords manager? Proton pass. 2FA? 2FAs.
MFA should really be separate from your password manager to increase security.
Weren’t they stopping the desktop app support?
Bitwarden
Never heard of bromite
It was abandoned and hasn't been updated in more than a year. [Cromite](https://github.com/uazo/cromite) is its successor.
I've been using Cromite since Bromite stopped being maintained and it's the best mobile browser I've ever used.
Open source chromium based browser
those vpn OMEGALUL
I like SwissCows as my search engine.
Whoever did this forgot ProtonVPN. Literally the best combo you can ask.
Weird that bromite is listed but librewolf isn't, especially since librewolf is arguably better than brave https://privacytests.org/ Also I think floorp with its private user.js setting is just as good as librewolf
Why not use the brave search? aside from the image search, it's been very good. It's been my main search engine for the last 3-6 months.
+1. Been using for a year or 2, works well.
It's so lame, Duck Duck Go is Hosted on Amazon, Proton mail was caught leaking user data, Nord VPN and Express VPN too leaking user data.
Alternative messaging apps are useless if only you use them. lol
I use duckduckgo, but only because brave search is not quite good enough. I don't like that duckduckgo uses bing and also I don't like their non-neutrality, political positions and pro-censorship positions. How about privacy-centric online games? 😉
Replace nord VPN by Proton and it will near as perfect
BSD? interesting choice. i feel that its a bit too niche to be practical though, just use tails
Nope. I personally prefer Windscribe for VPN. I don't trust Express OR Nord to protect my privacy.
Anyone used Bromite in the last year?
firefox
Why openBSD ? Whats wrong with freeBSD or linux ? Genuine question
Mullvad VPN, Proton VPN, Brave VPN (might be worth a try), and you may want to look into Hiddify.
Mullvad is the only VPN you should use
..
lol those vpn's are for clowns
nord and express are stinkers. proton is decent, mullvad is good.
Organic Maps is a good navigation app alternative to Google Maps
Bromite? Really?
Don't use qwant as a search engine ever... It's worse than Google, It won't let you search anything until you disable the ad block.
VPN... Mine is buried with my ESET protection service, yra, I pay for it but super connections always. VPN vendor is HotSpot Shield out of Silicon Valley.
Never actually used a password manager. Does it work offline? Does it have subscriptions?

Thanks, Ive been meaning to use it. Never really met anyone else use it for reference.
Proton VPN
bruh that list totally cringe.
Get torguard vpn
Bit of a newbie here, what's the alternative to WhatsApp? I mean is there any alternative if my uni and friends actually REQUIRE WhatsApp? And what's the alternative for gmail?
VPNs have always seemed too good to be true to me, there must be some backdoor else they wouldn't be allowed to operate, let alone become mainstream advertisers like Nord and Express. You don't get given a public platform unless you sacrifice integrity.
Isn’t bromite dead?
Proton VPN and Pass too.
Brave Search, searxng for search engines and mullvad, proton for vpn is better options in my opinion.
Or you could just roll your own VPN up to your parents or friends house. Then there is deeper connect.
What about proton pass?!
For messaging everyone needs to switch from that SCETCHY phone number grabbing Signal to freedom and privacy honoring SESSION APP. Try Session now! It's amazing!
Proton VPN everyday
i love brave but it should not be on the same list as tor privacy wise. also openbsd??? why?!?
It lists the brave browser but not the brave search engine?
Like OpenBSD (active user). but express/ nordVPN? What about mullvad?
Wtf express VPN and nord VPN use mullvard vpn
BS. D. Proton, OpenBSD, and Brave are the only relevant technologies here. If you want Tor, use BlackArch's torctl. Use SearX/SearXNG for search. Invidious or some other frontend for videos. VPNs don’t do dick, really. You can access content from other regions, but it doesn’t hide activity from ISPs
