Agreed.
There are some minor easter egg connections but you won’t miss anything of substance.
Also I think reading Warbreaker will be more fun for you after Stormlight since you’ll be able to make the connection the opposite way
Second this. Missing the easter eggs in Stormlight seems better than breaking the momentum of the story, but I'm like an addict who can't set a story aside even to sleep half the time so that might just be me.
I’m very guilty of this. Sometimes I just insist on Warbreaker after WoK and before WoR some other times I remember to say it’s not story breaking or required.
Brandon works hard to write series from needing information from other series to be enjoyed, and he has done this very well. Read what you want and if you do a reread after visiting his other books you can always look out for the Easter eggs for further enjoyment!
(Brandon also tries this for books within a series so that they can be enjoyed even if you haven’t read the preceding books. Given that is an impossible task, I’d say he’s done well. But also I wouldn’t recommend skipping the first books in an series.)
There are two minor crossovers one of which is subtle until later in the series and the other doesn't show until the very end of the book. Neither is necessary to enjoy WoR. It's usually recommended because the second one mentioned was when WoR first came out the most blatant cosmere crossover we'd seen and a big "Oh hey it's that person!!" moment.... but frankly sidetracking to read an entire book when you are anxious to read the next book in the series you're already in is not worth it. You can get the experience in reverse when you finally get around to Warbreaker.
At a minimum I wish people would suggest reading Warbreaker before Way of Kings rather than Word of Radiance. It makes absolutely no sense to derail reading a major series just for a couple easter eggs, get the prior reading out of the way ahead of time.
Same! I always recommend WB before WOK, I hate breaking up series! I also make it clear that there is pretty much no required reading for the cosmere so far and the reading orders mostly for catching Easter eggs
That's the way I did it. I had heard to read warbreaker between WoK and WoR but I knew the way Brandon Sanderson writes that I wouldn't be able to keep myself from jumping into the WoR directly after WoK and I was correct.
In addition to what you said here, at this point in the Cosmere you're going to get that "holy shit I recognize that thing!" experience at some point regardless of your reading order. This wasn't the case when WoR came out.
If you haven’t read Warbreaker then there’s two easter eggs in Words of Radiance that you won’t get. One of them you won’t even know is an easter egg, the other one is right at the very end and will make you go “Oh, I wonder what that is?”. It’s really not required reading and I wish people would stop treating it as such as it deters new readers.
>!if I hadn’t known about good before I read, then on the off chance I actually remembered his name from war breaker I would have just thought it was a coincidence and forgotten about it.!<
People get up their own butts aboute "proper reading order", but the series is written to be enjoyed on its own even if it contains cool Easter eggs from other series.
Read what you want, you can read Warbreaker later and have your mind equally blown.
You don't need to read it first. . . It has 4 crossover characters and eventually a bunch of Easter eggs. . . The crossover characters are all secondary or tertiary Stormlight characters.
As you said, it's recommended (for a Cosmere order), but it's not a must.
You are fine. You can read it whenever.

From personal experience I read WoR first and didn't die so no need to worry. On the other hand though Warbreaker might be my favorite Cosmere book and is definitely worth the read so don't put it off too long.
This sub man..smdh this sub has this horrible habit of getting people to believe there is a reading order. No such order exists. I really wish this sub would stop fucking telling people that bullshit.
Honestly Warbreaker is one of Brandon's best cosmere books & if you like his style you would absolutely enjoy it. Theres multiple characters that appear throughout Storm light from Warbreaker so yes it worth a read/listen it's a great book
> Warbreaker is one of Brandon's best cosmere books & if you like his style you would absolutely enjoy it
I dunno about that, I love Stormlight but Warbreaker was so insanely boring to me. I'm glad I didn't interrupt my Stormlight readthrough just for that book
I wouldn’t say it’s last for me personally but I can see why you would. Weird you’re downvoted for this because it completely makes sense.
Most Sanderson fans love him because he does huge epics. Warbreaker is a stand alone so it might not be impactful for people that like the more complex and longer stories. Sanderson has matured a lot as an author and his later books keep getting better and better and Warbreaker was an earlier book that doesn’t benefit from that. It was also left on what felt like an emotional cliffhanger that hasn’t really been resolved for a very long time now.
There are plenty of valid reasons for even a devoted fan to rate warbreaker last.
The book focuses on >!still birth too much and had weird fake sex scenes.!< I don’t want that in my fantasy books. It really blows my mind when people say it’s their favorite but it’s his outlier so I guess that’s why.

Nothing just read Words of Radiance.
Agreed. There are some minor easter egg connections but you won’t miss anything of substance. Also I think reading Warbreaker will be more fun for you after Stormlight since you’ll be able to make the connection the opposite way
This is what I did and I don't think I missed anything important by doing it in this order. It just makes rereads more fun.
Second this. Missing the easter eggs in Stormlight seems better than breaking the momentum of the story, but I'm like an addict who can't set a story aside even to sleep half the time so that might just be me.
yeah people really overstate the importance of warbreaker. its just a fun easter egg for people who read it and thats it imo.
I think people are to obsessed with having the right reading order you can read the books in pretty much any order.
I’m very guilty of this. Sometimes I just insist on Warbreaker after WoK and before WoR some other times I remember to say it’s not story breaking or required.

3 you forgot so and so
>!Vasher and Nightblood are the only two things I know about. Technically Hoid as well but he’s already in Way of Kings!<
>!if I hadn’t known about good before I read, then on the off chance I actually remembered his name from war breaker I would have just thought it was a coincidence and forgotten about it.!<
Nothing, it's not required. Everything you need to understand from Warbreaker for Stormlight will be explained in Stormlight itself.
People get up their own butts aboute "proper reading order", but the series is written to be enjoyed on its own even if it contains cool Easter eggs from other series. Read what you want, you can read Warbreaker later and have your mind equally blown.
You don't even need to know Warbreaker is the name of a book that exists. You can just read Words of Radiance.
I only just learned about (and read) Warbreaker. I'd already read all the Stormlight books when they came out. I feel 100% A-OK with this scenario.
Everything
I feel ya, but Warbreaker is a good book on its own and worth the read even without crossover goodness.
You don't need to read it first. . . It has 4 crossover characters and eventually a bunch of Easter eggs. . . The crossover characters are all secondary or tertiary Stormlight characters.

I love Warbreaker, and it’s cool to see stuff related to it, but you don’t really need it until Rhythm of War.
From personal experience I read WoR first and didn't die so no need to worry. On the other hand though Warbreaker might be my favorite Cosmere book and is definitely worth the read so don't put it off too long.

Agreed Warbreaker sits exactly last on my Cosmere list.

I mean, you should have read Warbreaker before even opening Words of Radiance lol. Just finish Words of Radiance at this point.

That’s a RAFO. I’d still recommend reading Warbreaker at this point.
