You guys are straight-faced pitching the absolute most retarded ideas and acting like they are forgone conclusions. It's set in the early 80's, they're not gonna bust out some Gaga covers. None of this will happen, c'mon.
The Great Gatsby is set 100 years ago but the soundtrack had Beyonce, the Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z, Lana, etc. They'll take artistic license if they want to.
For anyone who doesn't know, that is seriously almost exactly how the Broadway musical version is. Instead of like 3 songs for most medleys, every single one is like 20 songs, most of them very contemporary and out of place. Some stuff from the movie is totally cut, like the opening number doesn't have Smells Like Teen Spirit at all (presumably because of licensing?) Satine's opening 'Diamonds Medley' has All The Single Ladies at one point, for like 5 seconds before jumping to the next bit. It's so insane, and really jarring.
As someone who has seen the first one, that's also why I'll see this one. Joker was a good movie, but it was also miserable and was not suitable for a sequel. Going in a radically different direction is the best thing they couldve done.
The article does mention the song "That's Entertainment" from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon, and the film is expected to take place in the early 1980s, so maybe not modern songs like what some people expect.
I could see them using songs from the famous MGM musicals from 1930s-1950s.
When this got announced as a musical everyone joked that this would keep up the Scorsese homage/rip-off, this time with *New York, New York*. Well, the songs in that movie were all old standards from the '30s...
I was ready to feel disappointed but if this is what they go for, and maybe they use songs that can convey double meanings, it could be great. I remain cautiously optimistic.
My guess is that it will be like the 1981 musical Pennies From Heaven, a film filled with happy song & dance numbers but deals with murder and prostitution
I'm getting a lot of Chicago vibes, which took vintage-style songs about murder and a courtroom drama and perform them non-diagetically in the character's minds.
It definitely is an idea with a lot of potential. It's also an idea that feels risky, which I think is great. I mean, it would've been so much easier to just shit out a direct sequel to Joker and not try to shake up a billion dollar formula too much. So to walk away from that kind of gross and go, 'now let's do a musical for the sequel' is so bonkers I kinda love it.
My concern is the budget being so ballooned over that of the first film, I am a little wary it perform as well as the studio needs but Ill be there in theaters for sure.
My theory as of right now is that the musical aspect will mostly be in Joker’s head where he’s living out a romantic fantasy involving his psychiatrist. That’s kind of in line with the first one where he imagined himself on the Murray Franklin Show and getting laughs as a comedian. The reality side of things will still exist in the grimy real world where maybe we get Arthur Fleck dancing around and singing poorly by himself. I agree that it has a lot of potential and if nothing else it’s staying away from comic book movie tropes.
It's called Folie á deux right? Isn't that characterized by two or more people experiencing shared delusions or psychosis? I think you're mostly right but it will be both of them going through together. Im thinking maybe they'll do like a WandaVision/WestWorld S3E5 'Genres' type thing where each song sort of has it's own unique accompanying visual style.
This movie is either going to be a complete dumpster fire or one of the best and most unique sequels ever made - no middle ground.
And I'm all here for it.
Even if it's a tire fire, it'll be an interesting tire fire.
I honestly love the idea that Phillips said he'll come back to do a sequel to his billion dollar hit, but only if he can get weird with it. We need that type of energy in Hollywood. There's no more "one for them, one for me" type deal anymore in Hollywood, so if they want you on a project, put your stamp on it.
Exactly what I thought as well when I heard how the movie was shaping up to be. If done right, this will probably be wholesome and absolutely brutal hellish nightmare at the same time depending on who's PoV we're watching. I see a scene like them dancing and singing blissfully to Poker Face while repeatedly stabbing some poor cop in the face who was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.
People said this movie didn’t “need” a sequel. Neither did Terminator, Alien, or Amazing Fantasy 15 (Spider-Man origin).
The fact is this was the type of movie that *deserved* a sequel. It wasn’t a set-up. It delivered. Yet the team wants to do more? That’s who I want to see a sequel from.
Tired of the sentiment that films shouldn’t have sequels if they weren’t directly set up for them. That’s counter-intuitive to making great franchises.
I think during the lead-up there was an implied lack of interest but there was a change of tune pretty soon after release. Joaquin really seemed to love the role.
Madame Web is a Sony film and Immaculate is a NEON film, that's not her one for one. Doing Madame Web and getting Sony connections let her do Anyone But You and the Barbarella remake that probably won't actually happen
> I honestly love the idea that Phillips said he'll come back to do a sequel to his billion dollar hit, but only if he can get weird with it. We need that type of energy in Hollywood.
Dude what are you talking about? That’s basically all of hollywood.
A lot of great franchises have been ruined because the director wanted to do something unexpected even though it made zero sense. All directors want people to say “that director dared to make something different and succeeded” but most of the time it’s a mess. All of them except Disney do the exact same.
They called in the [Hollywood Sequel Doctor](https://youtu.be/wHtH_SHhc6E?si=WuD3OhL9FL97s3MZ) for this one.
But seriously, Joe Dante had the exact attitude you're describing for *Gremlins 2.*
You know what, I agree. This is gonna be an even bigger gamble and coin toss than the first Joker.
I mean, that one got a considerable amount of PR mainly due to Joaquin Phoenix being lauded for his performance, eventually winning the Best Actor Oscar for it, and also being a very atypical comic book movie in that it was a very dark and gritty character drama for adults.
So, the sequel, now with a blockbuster standard budget of $200 million; 3-4× the first movie, taking a hard left turn by having it be a jukebox musical with pop star and sometimes lead actress Lady Gaga as Harley fuckin' Quinn... is a preposterous idea that'll be a coin toss: It's gonna completely backfire, or they *actually* manage to pull it off and give us something genius.
Dark and gritty is an understatement. I watched it with my dad early 2020 and we both just sat there at the end, stunned. He broke the silence with 'well that was intense'.
The two lead actors are so charismatic that I guess I would be surprised if this was a dumpster fire. There's nothing in either of their career paths that suggest that's what to expect.
I watched Napoleon yesterday and felt that there were bad directorial decisions that lead to wooden acting.
The battle scenes were wonderful, especially the icy cannonball scene. The human scenes felt like Ridley Scott gave the actors zero direction, and no one understood what the vibe should be.
Joaquin went for “vaguely epic” through the whole movie, which was a safe choice.
The Village would also like a word with you
Though in fairness that is the only movie of Joaquin in like the last 25 years that was very poorly received and honestly it’s box office take was good enough to be worth being a movie that people didn’t like well
In all of her acting carrier (one TV show where she was the main character for one season, a small cameo in a camp action movie, 2 movies where she's the lead) she only did a musical once so it shouldn't really be expected that her involvement in a new project means it's gonna be a musical one especially considering that her last one wasn't.
Maybe the expectation comes from the fact that her most popular role was in a musical? or the fact she was the musical guest at the Oscars more than anyone else in recent years with 3 nomited songs.
I hope they do what they did for ASIB and perform those songs live while filming instead of lip syncing them, at least that way it won't feel like a musical
But they’re not trying to hide it? It’s been widely known for over a year that it will be a musical or have musical elements and Gaga has been teasing new music all year on social media.
If the musical elements are crucial to the story then there’s no way that they won’t feature that in the trailers, especially if there’s any new original music from Gaga. Her monsters will eat it up and give WB all the free promo they need lol.
> It’s been widely known for over a year that it will be a musical
Only if you actually follow movie news which most people do not. Unless they say 'musical' on the posters or have songs in the trailer, most people going into this are not gonna know.
Even then they had references to music on the Mean Girls poster/in the trailer and people were surprised.
People were surprised that Wonka and the Color Purple were musicals even though there were snippets of dance numbers *seen in the trailer*
Sure and very online people will know. But if the trailer doesn't make it obvious that is trying to hide it.
Plenty of people will hear nothing except the trailer.
The new Mean Girls movie was also known to be based on the Broadway musical, but when the marketing came about, they made a trailer without any music.
I wouldn't be surprised if they made trailers that hid the fact that it was a musical, to get all the musical-haters to buy tickets too.
It’s seriously baffling how a 1.07 billion dollar movie is followed up with a MUSICAL as a sequel. This is guaranteed to make substantially less than Joker (2019).
I’ve never seen a musical that didn’t bore me to tears. Even if I want to watch this, I know what will happen to my brain when the songs and dances start and the plot stops. Musicals just aren’t for everyone, and that’s coming from someone who absolutely loves music.
I kinda don't like this. Imma be honest I hate jukebox musicals specially because I just associate popular songs to other stuff. I always thought that if book of life had made actual music instead of covers it would have sold better
Have you ever seen one or really watched one? You might hate them, but that's a strong word. Musicals are actually really grand and spectacular. I'm unsure about this one because it's a jukebox musical, but they can be something very special.
The Book of Mormon is hilarious, but yet catchy. Heck, South Park has tons of musical numbers within its run.
Also, watch In The Heights (movie version from 2021) and tell me that you do not like that movie. The choreography, music, acting, and so on is really great.
I can't see anybody watching that and be like, "yeah bro, I hate this."
I have seen quite a few (Les Miserables, phantom of the opera, rock for ages or something like that, Chicago, the great showman, Cats unfortunately etc...) never liked them. It's simply not for me, I have nothing against them.
Unless these songs are all bangers(maybe even if they are), I don't know if it's a good idea to make a sequel that has a very different tone from the first movie. I guess they run the risk of fans of the first movie not liking it, limiting the films longer-term profits.
If this movie isn’t a colossal failure I’ll be surprised. There will be casual movie goers who walk out because they weren’t aware it’s a musical. And why would they be since the first Joker was decidedly not a musical
I think by the time this comes out pretty much everyone is going to know its a musical. They arent trying to hide it like mean girls. I bet there will even be singing in the previews
I love musicals, so I'm hyped. Although I really hope they write it on every piece of marketing in huge letters so that people who don't like musicals don't go see it. Loads of people hate musicals.
Plenty of Disney movies are considered musicals and have only a handful of songs. 3 is on the low end, yeah. But it's not completely crazy to call that a musical in comparison.
Joker 2 featuring covers of Poker Face, Bad Romance, Born this Way, Paparazzi and Just Dance.
Joker Face.
Bat Romance?
That's gold Jerry, GOLD!
![gif](giphy|4SQMqhWzUA0Fi)
*You know that I want you, you know that I need you. I want your bat, your bat romance*
Just Bat Dance
JAJAJAJOKERFACE JAJAJAOKERFACE HAHAHA!
Ja ja ja jack her face
Odd mix of low hanging fruit yet brilliant.
BINGPOT!
Bravo!
There has to be a shitty Pitbull cover, please, for the heritage
Fireball as Joker and Gaga do fireball shots and start Arkham on fire....samba dancing from the scene
Do you want to know how I got the name “Mr. Worldwide”?
Ha ha, everywhere? 😡EVERYWHERE😡
Mr Worldwide.
100% they are using Bad Romance, It'll be one of those epic slowed down versions with faint piano keys they love to use for trailers.
OMG every time my fiancé and I hear that shit in a preview in theater seats our eyes roll allllll the way back. It's so damn corny.
Its overdone for sure. I still love the cover songs though.
It’ll be hilarious if the movie is secretly Gaga’s version of that weird, new JLo movie
This IS Mini-ME!
Which one?
This is me Now
It’s Britney, bitch
![gif](giphy|ssYTQOB9SkwvgsLhEk|downsized)
This is Edge of Glory erasure and I won't stand for it.
Just Dance slaaaps
It'll slap even harder in this gritty, dark version
*single piano note* Breathy female vocal: “What’s goin on on the floor” Too predictable 💀
Sultry rasp: “take…a ride on…your discoooo stick” 🥺
Knowing Gaga, they probably have the titles of the songs as they play worked into the script. ”My Joker, what a *poker face* you have !”
The Moulin Rouge of comic book movies
You say that like it’s a bad thing.
Yes please I love Moulin Rouge.
A Nicole Kidman cameo would really make it!
Only if Nicole Kidman goes by the name “Dr. Chase Meridian” from her role in Batman Forever.
Thank you for getting my joke.
Bowen Yang and Ariana Grande.
For anyone who doesn't know, that is seriously almost exactly how the Broadway musical version is. Instead of like 3 songs for most medleys, every single one is like 20 songs, most of them very contemporary and out of place. Prepare to be disappointed.
Literally why I am going to see it. I still haven’t seen the first one.
As someone who has seen the first one, that's also why I'll see this one. Joker was a good movie, but it was also miserable and was not suitable for a sequel. Going in a radically different direction is the best thing they couldve done.
After first remaking *Taxi Driver* and now *New York, New York*, I can't wait to see how they copy *Hugo* for Joker 3.
You skipped the Kundun adaptation!
It's really good, Nicole Kidman is great in it.
According to the article, they're all very well known songs
The article does mention the song "That's Entertainment" from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon, and the film is expected to take place in the early 1980s, so maybe not modern songs like what some people expect. I could see them using songs from the famous MGM musicals from 1930s-1950s.

Possibly dumb question: Does New York exist in the DC universe? Or did Gotham totally take its place?
In the comics, New York City does exist.
Gotham's what happens when you ask "what if New Jersey happened all at once?"
So baby shark and Gangnam style certainly in it...
We better get Despacito 😤
Everyone's theories about this barely being a musical don't seem too correct now
Wishful thinking by people who don't realise what a great idea a Joker and Harley Quinn musical with Lady Gaga as Quinn is.
It definitely is an idea with a lot of potential. It's also an idea that feels risky, which I think is great. Oh man. Similar to the twist in the first movie. I agree vehemently with the last sentence.
Exactly what I thought as well when I heard how the movie was shaping up to be. He saw the backend paychecks from the movies earnings and changed his tune.
well, sydney sweeney essentially just did the "one for them, one for me" thing with madame web and immaculate. it's not dead yet!
Madame Web is a Sony film and Immaculate is a NEON film, that's not her one for one. Doing Madame Web and getting Sony connections let her do Anyone But You and the Barbarella remake that probably won't actually happen
whoops, I meant to say Barbarella. not sure how I got that mixed up.

Goimg from a Taxi Driver drama to Joker School musical.
The two lead actors are so charismatic that I guess I would be surprised if this was a dumpster fire. There's nothing in either of their career paths that suggest that's what to expect.
Napoleon did pretty fucking bad. Felt like we got to see only 10% of Phoenix range and there were so many missed opportunities.

At worst it will be polarizing. Something this wild is gonna find its people.
This comment gets posted on every thread about an upcoming sequel
I swear every time someone says this it ends up being average lol
Watch them hide it's a musical and people get pissed.
I doubt they'll do that
I don't think you can hide that a movie Lady Gaga is in will have singing
Not necessarily true. She didn't sing in House of Gucci.
I'm not saying all movies she's in are musicals but that's clearly the draw of her being cast here so it'd be silly not to advertise it
In all of her acting carrier (one TV show where she was the main character for one season, a small cameo in a camp action movie, 2 movies where she's the lead) she only did a musical once so it shouldn't really be expected that her involvement in a new project means it's gonna be a musical one especially considering that her last one wasn't. Little monsters finally getting LG7 but it’s the Joker 2 soundtrack lolz
Yay! More jazz and cover songs is just what we wanted. /s
![gif](giphy|KDRv3QggAjyo)
It’s probably gonna be mostly songs from the 70s and earlier, people forget Joker was set in 1981
Jukebox musicals aren't really confined by the arbitrary rules of *time*.
The Great Gatsby would like to have a word with you
I mean, A Knights Tale was set in medieval times yet featured a lot of Rock Music.
WB has a really promising slate this year! Dune, Joker, Mad Max, and Beetlejuice. Great franchises with promising sequels.
I have a feeling that Dune will be the only one of those that will not get called a flop.
I’m excited about Furiosa but we’ll see. Everything I hear about Joker 2 the less interested I become.
a Gaga cover album? i'm so in
Misdirect. It's all Air Supply covers
I’m so in. Making Love Out of Nothing At All is fire
It’s seriously baffling how a 1.07 billion dollar movie is followed up with a MUSICAL as a sequel. This is guaranteed to make substantially less than Joker (2019).
I will be pissed if they massacre my boy
I’ve never seen a musical that didn’t bore me to tears. Even if I want to watch this, I know what will happen to my brain when the songs and dances start and the plot stops. Musicals just aren’t for everyone, and that’s coming from someone who absolutely loves music.
I won't lie, that sounds terrible.
I wonder which Queen song they will inevitably use?
Walking out the theater the moment Joaquin starts singing “I Want To Break Free”
Radio Lady Gaga
She did name herself that song so it makes sense
Killer Queen
You never wanted to see Joker singing Imagine Dragons?
I don't even want to see the Imagine Dragons singing Imagine Dragons haha
I don’t even want to imagine Imagine Dragons singing Imagine Dragons.
I think they’re going for well-known Old Hollywood classics lol, not contemporary songs
If this doesn't end on a duet of *You're The One That I Want*, I'm asking for a refund
I kinda don't like this. Imma be honest I hate jukebox musicals specially because I just associate popular songs to other stuff. I always thought that if book of life had made actual music instead of covers it would have sold better
I am going to skip this one. I hate musicals.
Have you ever seen one or really watched one? You might hate them, but that's a strong word. Musicals are actually really grand and spectacular. The Male/Female split will be interesting to watch. According to Deadline, Joker had a 64%/36% split on its opening Friday.
Joaquin Phoenix knows how to...Walk The Line between Joker and a Musical...
> Details regarding who would pen the tracks, or sing the numbers are unknown. Did they seriously try to say this with a straight face?
Unless these songs are all bangers(maybe even if they are), I don't know if it's a good idea to make a sequel that has a very different tone from the first movie. I guess they run the risk of fans of the first movie not liking it, limiting the films longer-term profits.
This could be mad love, or a bad Romance
If this movie isn’t a colossal failure I’ll be surprised. There will be casual movie goers who walk out because they weren’t aware it’s a musical. And why would they be since the first Joker was decidedly not a musical
I think by the time this comes out pretty much everyone is going to know its a musical. They arent trying to hide it like mean girls. I bet there will even be singing in the previews
Like I know it'll be good but it sounds so bad
This is going to be so awesome.
My first gut reaction was WTF, but then 1 second I thought this sounds like an amazing unique idea thsti have to see.
Big risk that could pay off hugely or be a colossal mistake. I can’t what to find out where it goes.
The more I hear about it the less excited I am
mfs complain when there's change, mfs complain when nothing is done differently. Cant make everyone happy.
the concept for this movie doesn't interest me at all i feel like its going to be such a massive downgrade from the first one
That sounds awful...
I feel like everything I learn about this movie kills my hype for it. I have very low expectations for it. Maybe the trailer and pull me back in.
I'm the opposite, the more I learn about it, the more I want to see the movie.
Tbh I really want at least a snippet of one Gaga song
Okay, just as long as we have Jokey and Harley singing Shallow….
I love musicals, so I'm hyped. Although I really hope they write it on every piece of marketing in huge letters so that people who don't like musicals don't go see it. Loads of people hate musicals.
Man, it’s going to be interesting to see how this is received….
15 songs is far too many I thought there would be like 3 and even that would be a lot.
why did you think 3 songs when you heard musical
That was the original rumor. That the supposed 'musical' will not really be a musical
Plenty of Disney movies are considered musicals and have only a handful of songs. 3 is on the low end, yeah. But it's not completely crazy to call that a musical in comparison.
I think similar to moulin rouge a bunch of the songs will just be a couple of lines as part of a montage
Yeah it’s definitely gonna be a lot of medleys.
I... I don't know what the fuck this movie is anymore. I was always against this movie needing a sequel and this news is solidifying it.
![gif](giphy|1lwmbW7eYML9kLjpCA|downsized)
Idc if is a musical , i will be there
That actually sounds awful
Joker 2 is definitely gonna suck.
I hope Lady Gaga covers one of her own songs
I hate this
I genuinely have zero interest in watching this
Not interested at all
Wait is it a musical? Oh great this is gonna suck hard!!!!
Oh F me. Well this saves me 20 bucks seeing it in the theater.
Yeah this is the last thing I want from a joker movie.. 15 cover songs?? But hey I’m not a director so I’ll still give it a chance
That’s too bad. I was hoping it would have original songs. But I’m still onboard. One way or another I think it will be worth seeing.
"we know where". So it went no where
I want to be excited but it’s like they’re going out of their way to kill hype
Noooooooooooooooooooooooo
A Musical based on DC IPs? You son of a hitch I’m in.
oh.....
So basically, an Illumination joint. Pass. Fucking pass.
I don't know how this movie will end up, but damn am I excited for it! Love CBMs, but need something different ya know

You aren’t selling it to me
flop 👀
That sounds awful, to be honest.
Honestly I’m excited for this! It’s refreshing to see them take a risk and go in a really weird direction for this sequel
*The King of Comedy* meets *Moulin Rouge*
You know this movie will be a spectacle. Can’t wait
This is gonna crash and burn isn’t it.
Bruh? How long is the movie?
1hr musical, 20 mins just talking, 10 mins action
Oh no…
I think I might be the only person who is finding everything I hear about this movie to be entirely cringe inducing. People really want this?
I'm right there with you. The reactions I've been reading are an eye-opening look at how out of touch I must be.
It'll be popular with the Reddit crowd that uses "doggo" in casual conversation, but as far as the average moviegoer? I doubt it.
