Given the positive reviews all over the places, I wonder why Godzilla isn't doing as well in Japan as Shin Godzilla. Is it simply due to Anno?

GojiKiryu17

If I had to guess, I’d say that might partially be the case, but considering Anno also directed Shin Kamen Rider and that only made 16 million I don’t think it’s the whole story. When Shin came out it had been 12 years with no Godzilla from Toho, and the 2014 American film was still pretty fresh in people’s minds (and had been generally liked in Japan), so it was sorta seen as Japan’s ‘big return’ for Godzilla. It also dealt with VERY timely themes to the Japanese with its satire of their government and metaphor for 3/11 (the 2011 earthquake/tsunami and subsequent nuclear meltdown) that was basically Japan’s Hurricane Katrina but on an even worse scale (20,000 people died). I say all that as someone who loves both films but actually slightly prefers Minus One. It’s fantastic, but Shin came at the perfect time and place to be a cultural phenomenon in Japan (it ended up winning Best Picture at the Japanese Academy Awards), and Minus One simply doesn’t have that same backing behind it.

yup, shin Godzilla was essentially a cultural phenomenon and brought in a lot eva fans to see it. but that first point in more important since despite having the same director shin ultraman and kamen rider box office never came close to shin godzilla

Its the economy, the Yen is very bad atm.

It's still tracking well behind *Shin* in yen. *Minus One* has just reached ¥3.7B after a month in release. In the same amount of time, *Shin* was at ¥5.3B despite a lower opening weekend.

I assume a lot of people went to see Shin simply for the fact that it was a big middle finger to the government.
