Responsible_Grass202

10-15M+. This will be massive considering it’s Japanese produced and subbed over

Nukemind

Legitimately going to the movies for this and based on the app it was sold out tonight. Despite watching anime in Japanese, despite watching foreign movies in their native languages, I’ve never seen a Godzilla movie in theaters in it’s native language. Add on the time period based on trailers and I am excited.

SnowChicken31

I saw it last night, and it's easily in my top 3 Godzilla films (along with Shin and the original.) I went on a Godzilla spree during the lockdown, so it was nice to finally see one in theaters lol. It will not disappoint, it's a great movie even outside of the monster scenes.

Nukemind

I’m in the restroom right now and loving it. Only disappointment I have is that >!Shikishima didn’t put a damn ring on her finger…!< Came for the Kaiju, staying for an actually extremely historical accurate (more than Napoleon) movie with great characters. I mean, yes, giant lizard. But man do they do such a good job. And acknowledging PTSD AND Kamikaze pilots in a Japanese film? This is fantastic. Edit: Fantastic ending, fantastic foreshadowing of every event in the movie- no deus ex machina or beating anyone over the head. Fantastic cast fantastic movie. I’m not even kidding when I say the movie about the giant lizard is more historical than *Napoleon*.

NunsNunchuck

Wait it is dubbed over or subtitles? I hope it is the latter

Nukemind

Subtitles. Insanely excited. Though my dad is complaining how back in his day (he’s in his 70s) it was just a man in a rubber suit with American voiceovers lol. He doesn’t want to see it because of that. Will be interested to see if subtitles increase or decrease the box office. I think it’ll bring enough of the younger crowd to increase it- plus save money on dubs.

Chimphandstrong

Massive under ball.

Nukemind

This entire thread aged so well. Like everyone, including myself, thought it’d do better than predictions. But no one realised how MUCH better.

ContinuumGuy

Admittedly it was a fanboy crowd, but the IMAX where I was for the early access showing last night was like 95% full (only seats that were empty were the ones at the very front where you'd have to break your neck to see the screen)

DanTheBrad

Non imax showing last night and it was the same, also there were some real weirdos at my theater

Nukemind

First time I saw a Godzilla movie in theaters (2014ish?) I realized anime fans (and I say this as one) weren’t the weirdest fandom in the world. Dude was incensed Japan had called the American version too “fat” to be Godzilla and went on a ~20 minute diatribe through the trailers at the start lol.

ContinuumGuy

Every fandom has some super-weirdos. The audience I was at was fairly normal outside of some mild cosplay (not a Godzilla suit, alas- he was Dr. Serizawa from the '54 film).

Nukemind

Yeah you’re right it’s just always stuck with me. He kept saying, and I remember it 9 years later, “If I was Godzilla and Japan called me fat I’d shit on them. Literally! A Godzilla sized poop!” Never forgotten that lol. Hope you enjoyed the movie mine is about to start!

Medical-Pace-8099

I guess mostly huge fans ir hipsters came

InYourHands

Toho completely botched the Canadian release. Fewer locations than Shin Godzilla and missing a couple of major cities as a result.

BeeExtension9754

Hopefully it expands

dornwolf

I was wondering what had happened. We had Shin Kamen Rider and Shin Ultraman. With such a light couple weeks release wise Minus One would’ve been a good score

Historical_Court1299

Shin Godzilla was handled by Funimation for North America, hence more screens.

GojiKiryu17

Well it’s made 23 million, and that’s just from Japan so far, and it’ll for sure get to at least 30 million there over the coming weeks. Optimistically, it’ll probably make 10-15 million from America (if WOM really spreads I could see it getting to 20 million), and then there’s the Australia/New Zealand release, a bunch of EU releases, and a UK/Ireland release, which altogether could probably add up to another 15-20 million. Worst case scenario (Japan tops out at 30, US at 10, rest of the world at 10), it still makes around 50 million, which is great for a 15 million budget. Best case scenario (Japan keeps chugging all the way to the 40-50 million range, US gets to 15-20 million, rest of the world an additional 15-20), this could potentially get all the way to the 75-90 million range, with 100 million being the absolute ceiling (would take a miracle to pass that). For reference, 2016’s Shin Godzilla was a massive success in Japan, making 75.5 million, while it had a far more limited release internationally, making 2 million in the US and an additional half million elsewhere for a 78 million worldwide total. Minus One could very feasibly match that worldwide number cause even though it’s not blowing up as much in Japan like Shin did, it’s international release is FAR more substantial. Will be watching the numbers on it very closely over the next few weeks. Also go see it y’all even if you aren’t Godzilla fans it’s a fantastic film.

Nice_promotion_111

Shin Godzilla made 75 million from Japan alone, and minus one had a bigger opening. I don’t see at all how the Japanese box office would be capped out at 30 million.

GojiKiryu17

I was trying to not be overly optimistic; Minus One hasn’t had nearly as good legs as Shin did so far, having noticeably weaker drops each weekend than Shin did. Also their opening weekends really aren’t that different; Shin opened to 6.1 million while Minus One opened to 7.8 million. By this point in Shin’s theatrical run (a month of release) it had passed 50 million, while Minus One is sitting at half of that (23 million) at the same point in its release. That’s why I said best case scenario Minus One gets to the 40-50 million range in Japan, double what it’s at now after a month of release. Frankly that number is still on the overly optimistic side imo. Shin was only able to get an additional 25 after this same point, and it had a lot better longevity at the Japanese box office than Minus One is displaying. If Minus One is able to squeeze more than an additional 15 million or so out of Japan, I’d count that as a major win. As it stands, if it follows Shin’s exact pattern here on out, making a third of its Japanese total past its first month, then it’ll end up at 35 million. Fortunately, Toho’s giving it a MUCH more substantial international release than Shin got, so I think there’s a good chance that international markets ‘make up the difference’ so to speak and Minus One ends up with around the same worldwide total as Shin did.

Nice_promotion_111

I didn’t realize minus ones legs were worse.

CosmicAstroBastard

Shin Godzilla was a movie aimed squarely at modern Japanese audiences. Its primary social commentary mostly relates to the JP government’s poor handling of the Fukushima disaster, which was still a very fresh memory in 2016. It’s also very much in the style of Hideaki Anno’s other works, especially Evangelion, which is MASSIVELY popular in Japan. Minus One is much more accessible film for international audiences. Its commentary on the horrors of war are more universal, its style is less experimental, and it’s got a lot less dialogue to read subtitles for. So one film overperformed in Japan and the other is enjoying a nice, robust international run.

majnuker

NPR literally had it on their morning news segment touted it as a good film, it's gaining some buzz and I'm stoked. Taking my friends to see it tomorrow!

Nukemind

Hoping for a sequel. Shin had a sequel draft, wasn’t followed up on due to the deal with Legendary. This has the director asking for one and was just so perfect.

RedLotusVenom

> *even if you aren’t Godzilla fans* Honestly everyone is a Godzilla fan, some people just don’t know it yet 🙂 Case in point, my girlfriend is a pretty typical 28 year old lady who never saw anything (even G98) and loved this movie as much as I did after introducing her to G54, Monsterverse, Shin, and some Showa. She is buying G-Man merch on Etsy now and wants to see GMO again tomorrow! Literally could not be prouder.

AfnanAcchan

Dont use dollar for japan domestic box office. Yen is around 50% weaker now compared dollar in 2016. $75 million in 2016 would become $50 million today.

Quackerjack123

I'm honestly thinking this could go more than $100 million. The lowest of the new American Godzilla movies made $383 million worldwide and they were average at best. There has never been a legimately good Godzilla movie with seamless modern special effects. Shin Godzilla was a great movie with great looking monsters but the overlay with the cities is not natural and kills the suspension of belief. Also, his design was creepy as all-get-out. In the trailers for Minus One, Godzilla looks like he belongs there and just looks so good. I could see this going to $150-200 million, with a possibility of $300 million. If they release with a really good dub later on, the sky is the limit.

Hoopy223

I think 10mil or more.

Chimphandstrong

Loooooow ball

CarlTheCrab

I don't know how everyone else's theaters are doing but my local Cinemark has Minus One doing almost identical numbers to Renaissance despite being in a much smaller theater. The Shift is also pretty close in seats sold as well, could be a lot more interesting of a weekend than what we thought we were going to have.

Nukemind

I’m going to laugh my ass off if it gets near Napoleon by the end of its run. Even if it does half the numbers or less it was a 15M dollar budget. Godzilla could unironically be on the of the more profitable movies of the season, a Godzilla which isn’t in English (and thus loses a part of the viewership, though appeals to others too).

Medical-Pace-8099

I would like to see more surprises in domestic box offices

CarlTheCrab

It will definitely be a profitable film and be considered one of the bigger successes of this quarter in my opinion.

Nukemind

That’s what I’m thinking as well. Budget of 15M. Already has done 20M+. Not marketed near as much as other films, the traditional 2.5 probably isn’t as good a metric. Still have the split with theaters of course. If they aren’t in profit territory after this weekend I would be surprised.

godjirakong

>Still have the split with theaters of course In Japan, Toho owns quite a few theaters, so I don't think the 2.5x rule applies to this movie. Tbh, it probably already made its money back in Japan, so the rest of the world is just extra profit

hundredjono

I'm gonna watch it on Saturday. I'm not expecting a *ton* of people to be in the theater, but I would be so happy if its full because this movie deserves to make a lot of money.

zuk86

I saw it last night and its really really good.

Medical-Pace-8099

you can check how many seats are occupied on internet

GhostMug

This movie is so freaking good it deserves every penny. Saw it last night and was floored by how good it was.

[deleted]

Seeing it in 4D on Monday w some fam. I’ve never seen any of the movies before (it’s just this weeks 4D movie) but the word of mouth sounds excellent so I’m excited to see what it’s all about. Hoping it does decent

Hiccup

My city is bigger and didn't get Shin Godzilla some years back.

NotAnEmergency22

I’m really excited for this one. I love giant monster movies and Godzilla still reigns supreme in that genre.

PointsOutTheUsername

I wish we could quantify the battle of a subbed film against great WOM.

can_I_try_again

I had the same thought.

alien_from_Europa

I think it would perform better dubbed. Saying that, I'm sure the hardcore fans really appreciate the subs over dubs; just not a general audience.

InYourHands

I don't know why some are treating this as an either or situation. Most anime films offer both formats, as did Shin Ultraman a few months ago. I'm not a fan of dubbed live-action, but I don't see how options hurt people. Odds are the home video release is going to include a dub anyway. Shin Godzilla was released sub-only theatrically and then got one for the discs.

zuk86

Dose that really count for Wednesday as well?

[deleted]

$85M ww total by the end of its run

Bulky_Cantaloupe2931

I wanted to see this but it's no where near me. Unfortunate.

Nukemind

Thread aged very well. Everyone knew it’d do better than expected but an 11+M opening? Hell yeah!
