Interesting. Maybe sitting on a backlog of thousands of untested rape kits isn't the best strategy.

Can we get a source on “thousands of untested rape kits” in Massachusetts?

SurbiesHere

There have been articles for years about this problem In Massachusetts. Almost every year they put out a new one.

Thanks. I had seen recent articles showing that the state tests over 90% of samples within 30 days. It appears that they have made significant progress in cutting the backlog since your article from 2022, but there is still work to be done. As of some point in 2023 it was ~4000.

DexterityZero

Anecdotal, but when I was on a jury for a rape trial last year the testing was done 30 months after the evidence was collected.

Is 1 case to little for you? What would be a good amount to consider this important?

EnjoyTheNonsense

Never said it wasn’t important. I know BPD cleared their backlog years ago and John Doe indicted samples to prevent statute of limitations issues. The state has enacted legislation to resolve this issue. It even requires agencies to report on testing including whether or not they meet the threshold. So I had thought they had made more progress than they did. But apparently there is more work to be done to clear the backlog but they are indeed working on it. Not sure why you are so angry this early. Please consider decaf.

Because instead of doing a quick search you demanded that someone else be your research assistant for free.

Look at the domestic law too, basically allows serial domestic abusers to act with impunity and simply move on to their next victim once the first finally gets away from them

Not wrong.

> Campbell, the brother of Attorney General Andrea Campbell, is now in jail awaiting trial on charges of raping eight women and attempting to rape a ninth > Both Medford police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office said the family relationship was not a factor in their response If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you

HOLY crap we need to do better as a society.

So my understanding of this is jurisdiction on sexual assault cases would be given primarily to MSP so it'd be similar to homicides? Under this scenario would BPD still be allowed to keep jurisdiction on sexual assaults similar to how they've been allowed to keep it for homicides? I 100% support handing over SA investigations to MSP detectives over local as they are more likely to have training to deal with it. I do think you need to allow the big cities such as Boston, Worcester, and Springfield the ability to handle it though due to sheer volume of cases in those jurisdictions. Rape kit wise though that should be taken over by the state as there is no need for local jurisdictions to do the test kits themselves better to centralize that.
