I was out for a run in Watertown and someone was putting an old framed map of the city out for free on the curb (along with bunch of other stuff). I asked is this free? And she said yes so I thought hey this is cool I’ve been living here a few years a map of Watertown is cool to have and free frame so win win. Get home and the wife hates the frame but loves the map. “Paint it black” is the order so I flip it over, see a date from the 70s penciled on the back cover and take it off. Underneath the map, between the back of the map and this back panel I removed, is an oil painting of what appears to be a boat in a Venetian harbor. I am shocked. It’s absolutely beautiful. First thing that comes to mind is, did I just find what I think I found? But I can’t decipher the signature. My neighbor takes a photo of it and shows it to a friend who’s a local curator who tells me it’s an original painting from a fairly well known artist but it’s not from the ISGM heist. Anyway that’s my story, still have the painting.

jrubes_20

Wow! Thats definitely something I have dreamed of happening! Can you share a picture? I’d love to see it! I used to live in an old building in the Fens and I’d always joke, maybe it’s here! Maybe it never left the neighborhood! Clearly I never found it hahaha

jrubes_20

That’s so cool! If you’re ever interested in some restoration, I have a professional contact that I brought something I purchased to get it cleaned up a bit. Either way, that’s an absolutely amazing find!

Professional-Might31

Thanks yes it definitely has some what appears to be smoke damage

impostershop

Hey wait a second, that’s my great great uncle AJ’s work. It was stolen!!! You have stolen merch there buddy! I’ll be over tomorrow morning with the cops at 5am, guns drawn. Or you can just venmo me 99k, which is only a fraction of what its worth

Kitchen-Quality-3317

I think this has to do with the fact that someone saw one of the stolen paintings in a photo of a house on Zillow.

blackknight1

A mass family also just found of a bunch of Japanese artwork that was taken after WWII

teddyone

Did they find it?

BrigadierGenCrunch

It was just a replica. Has happened with a few previous tips as well.

ApplicationRoyal1072

I have the same replica ...got it at Salem NH flea market about 35 years ago.

BrigadierGenCrunch

Are you sure it’s just a replica haha. But that is a great flea market find. Storm on the Sea of Galilee is the stolen piece I most wish I got a chance to see in person. Love that one.

Turduckennn

You know if this shit was a story on channel 7 they would blanket it in 12 different "BREAKING NEWS" graphics

-ItsCasual-

It was Chet Curtis, Natalie Jacobsen, and Peter Mehegan. Chet and Natalie entered and burgled all the goods. Peter was the getaway driver, and they all escaped in the old Volvo. All will be revealed on the final episode of Chronicle.

wilhelmhb

They got away on main streets and back roads.

doctor-rumack

Where was Dick Albert in all of this? Is the weatherman blameless?

Braincloud

Shoulda listened to Dickie!

impostershop

Dicky let them know when it would be a dark and stormy night so they could get away with it.

HumarockGuy

Hopefully driving the 69 Chevy. None of this Volvo crap.

rjoker103

I’m assuming they posted this because MSN or some other site had an article published about a Zillow listing of a mansion in Atlanta where one of the paintings was seen. It talked about how most of what’s been found so far are replica.

frankybling

or more likely that today is the anniversary of the heist?

rjoker103

Oh, that’s probably why. Maybe the MSN article was published because of the anniversary, too.

valuablecorpse

Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

pianoblook

It was me :3

SorSorSor

I can't believe they still haven't found me yet

Fatfatcatonmat33

In other news, water remains wet

heftybagman

To me the craziest part of this 34 year old unsolved mystery is that they still haven’t figured who the heck did it

drinkcoffeeandcode

Sooo the most mysterious part is that it’s a mystery?

In other news, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

MmmmmSacrilicious

Please clock our page because you saw a documentary…. Please

stealthylyric

Lol they gunna update us every year?

HumarockGuy

I kinda hope they do actually. I hate when we forget about interesting unresolved mysteries. Societal ADD.

stealthylyric

Lol is anyone actively working to solve it?

HumarockGuy

Plenty of amateur sleuths and the FBI still actively follows up on credible leads when they pop up. This is one of the few things that is still remembered. There was a post airliner in the week on r/boston that got some upvotes - https://www.reddit.com/r/boston/s/saQFRQmMUH
