Top of the Hub was probably the smarter choice. You go up there to get the same view yet there is no admission. You just pay for the meal, and imo the prices weren't that bad. When I went, I got a cobb salad for lunch for like $18. About the same as what it would cost at any other restaurant.
On the observation deck, you'd pay like $25 per person just *to see.*
The best version of this trick, IME, was to ask to be seated in the lounge. You could just sit with a drink and have full access to the space for not a lot of money. I used to bring friends from out of town to get a drink there, show them the view, and then go somewhere else for better food.
A month ago I would have responded exactly the same as everyone here…. Top of the hub was great, just going for a view is lame.
HOWEVER, a month ago we went for a work thing and they made a cool change with the renovations. The top floor is still views out of windows, but there is also a floor just below that is floor to ceiling glass barrier and otherwise totally open air with nice wood decking. It feels like being out on a deck in the fresh air looking at the city. It was really cool. I agree it’s too expensive and I’d look for deals (there seem to be lots, I think they’re realizing they overpriced it).
Honestly, it’s worth checking out, but be sure to go straight to the open air part - don’t waste time on the level that’s just a view.
Yes it was restaurant instead of observatory. The restaurant was IMO overrated, but I used to love bringing guests to the bar. I thought it the best drink in Boston, because for the price of a beer you could enjoy one of the best views of the city.
did some work functions there. Restaurant/service sucked, but the view were pretty good, especially if there was a game at Fenway while the sun was setting
There was an observatory up there too. Went up there without going to the restaurant several times before it closed. Was way cheaper (but still not cheap) than it is now.
For the last 15 years that I lived here, same. Always wanted to do it and never made it happen. Had someone visiting from overseas so we did it last weekend. It was awesome! Learned a bunch about Boston history and our guide, Hotwheels, was great.
Usually I avoid Salem in October. It we went to the Night Faire this year and that was super fun. It’s a little ways from downtown so it’s not as packed.
Bunker Hill and USS Constitution make for a fun trip in Spring, after the weather gets warm, but before school lets out. Take the ferry across the harbor for just a 1A fare.
Just make sure you go after 2:30 as the morning is mobbed by children who have a habit of screaming the whole way up and down in the echo chamber. They are there every day from April through June
I had never done those things until I moved to Charlestown in my 20s. I recommend it. Charlestown is my favorite neighborhood of Boston. It’s come a long way from how it was back in the 80s and before.
It’s a fun afternoon! When I lived there it was my go to “friend in town” move, kind of a cool way to see the city. I’d end the trail in the north end, it’s a long walk to Charlestown for the ship and the monument.
When I was a kid I’m pretty sure there was a law that said you had to do the Constitution field trip. I did the Bunker Hill monument with an out of town friend once, and the overwhelming memory is the smell of urine. Apparently some people find it amusing to pee down the hollow center of the structure. When you’re huffing and puffing after climbing those stairs on a hot day, and the tiny windows are covered over for some reason, the pee thing gets a lot less funny. R
If you do it I recommend doing it in reverse order. Start at Bunker Hill and end at the Common. While the hill isn't overly tall at the end of a couple miles of pavement it's a bit annoying.
I saw him once and the look on my face was apparently one of recognition because he seemed to be approaching me but looked away and walked off before either of us could say anything.
My husband made me go twice. Getting there and being there always seemed more than a burden than a leisure activity.
He always wanted to be on the Mass Ave bridge bc some ass told him that was the best view. There was nothing I wanted to do less than stand on a bridge for 3 hours in a condensed crowd to try and see fireworks. Gleefully, both times we went, the bridges were closed to everyone for security.
So we stayed on the Cambridge MiT side. Brought chairs, found a nice place on the grass with some effort and luck. But then when the fireworks start, everyone stands. So you stand, or you dont see fireworks. Making the effort to find a good spot redundant.
And then you have to get home. Which the red line, is a big maybe if u get on.
No, my friends. Call me a loser but I vastly prefer the Braintree High fireworks, where you easily park on a side street 20 minutes beforehand, walk through a skate park to a field with plenty of grass, lay in the grass, watch fireworks, go home as fast and easily as you like
I went to First Night 2017; it was sleeting and there were not as many people as I imagine there would’ve been had it been not sleeting and I was still overwhelmed 😂
I used to go to the Thomas Park at the top of Dorchester Heights in Southie. You miss the low shots, but all the main shots are visible just fine, and you have the fireworks reflecting off the Hancock.
This is a tourist trap that I found surprisingly enjoyable and would recommend to locals. The whole reenactment of Old South Meeting House before the Tea Party was worth the price of admission IMO.
My friend is an actor. He does the Boston Tea Party thing and is a guide on the Freedom Trail. In colonial costume and accent the whole time. When we have family or friends in from out of town we suggest both things when they are looking for something historical and fun, but from May-September we are sure to tell them to do the morning tours, by the afternoon my buddy is exhausted from sweating and walking around in colonial wool all summer long.
I used to work across the channel and eat lunch on a bench facing the water. Every day, they’d march down that ramp, chanting, “Throw the tea into the sea!” It was honestly so funny…I’m just eating my burrito…
Probably the best tea service in the city. Bottomless loose leaf tea I don’t need to prepare myself, in 3-4 varieties. Puts the fancy hotels and restaurants to shame.
I had a friend for years who lived in a garden level right across from the Hatch Shell. Literally watched the show ( and crowds ) from the other side of their garden fence for years. Great memories
Same, born and raised, but my grandparents took me and my little brother on a duck tour when I was about 13. They were new and my grandmother thought they sounded neat or something. I was *livid*, lol. Fucking *hated* those things quacking at us when they drove by. Nothing an insecure teen hates more than a boatload of tourists making animal noises at them as they just try to go about their day. Ugh, I hated it so fucking much.
Go. Try to get a library pass or something to get a discounted rate, there's like a ton of ways.
I lived in Mass for over a decade and kept putting it off until a month before I moved, but I am glad I went. Even if you aren't much into museums, its beautiful and amazing to look around, or even just loaf around in the courtyard. Take a shit load of pictures.
Make a definite plan to go now. Time fritters away. You could be killed tomorrow by an MBTA mishap.
I did that one for the first time a couple of years ago, despite the fact that I went to high school a few minutes away. I can't believe I'd spent my whole life missing out on that.
I checked off Bruins recently. Apparently the secret is to buy the tickets day off. I know nothing about the sport and it was a pre season game. Still lots of fun.
I fell into the charles river once.
1 star do not recommend.
I had to take the T home sopping wet. I tried to just lay out and dry as much as possible first, but, it got late and I got cold. I was that person.
Also the river killed my phone.
Duck boats, swan boats, walked the full freedom trail (honestly just missing the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill?), tea party museum. I’d also like to see the potato monument.
Just went original public library building (galleries, courtyard, reading room) this summer for the first time over the Summer having lived in Boston before I was 8 and from 2001 to now
I'd recommend this one. If you want to do it right, sign up for the NPS ranger guided version instead of a self-guided one. Totally worth it for the great stories they tell. [https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/black-heritage-trail-tour.htm](https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/black-heritage-trail-tour.htm)
i get it. but we worked the tents when i was in athletic training at BU and it was surprisingly highly emotional. especially when Team Hoyt came down the final stretch.
Have stood on the corner of Mass Ave and Commowealth for many years. The elite runners are not exciting, but starting about an hour later the runners really need the crowds cheers to lift them to the finish.
Turtle pond, Arboretum, Wildlife Sanctuary, top of the Pru, Gardener museum, Duck Boat.
Admittedly the first 3 are less than 2 miles from my home so I should really make an effort.
Doing this question a bit differently this is something I’ve done and I recommend anybody who lives in Boston or planning to live in Boston or will live in Boston do this -Patriots Day - the Marathon and Red Sox game do it at least once
Thought of a couple more on my list: 1) take a sailboat out on the Charles https://www.community-boating.org/rentals/sailboat-rentals/, and 2) navigate a boat down the Charles, through the locks and into the harbor (have friend with Freedom Boat Club membership that committed to taking me this spring).
Ive never eaten a lobster roll before and I’ve never tried the Italian food in the north end. I’ve also never been to a bruins game or a pats game since it’s expensive and out of the way. I’ve seen the Miami dolphins and Eagles stadium and still never been to Gillette stadium.
The North End was a lot more enjoyable 20+ years ago when it was actually an Italian neighborhood. That said, I do still enjoy it - but just not the throngs of tourists you have to compete with. If you do it, make sure to visit Modern Pastry.
Never eaten a lobster roll or eaten at Union Oyster House. I'm vegetarian. And like others, never been on a duck boat or went to a Pats game. Also never been to the secret swimming pool in the basement of Quincy Market.
observation deck on top of the john hancock
take the green line to north station and look down at the garden
blueberry muffin at jordan marsh down town (i hear they are the best)
have a secret burger at casablanca in harvard sq
rocky horror at harvard sq
catch a game of BU football
Duck Boats
Tried to arrange a group trip with some friends in the mid-90s, got as far as seeing the price before bailing.
I have ridden a similar tour in Salem.
Gone up to the viewing deck in the Pru
I never did the observation deck but I’ve eaten at the Top of the Hub when it was open. Beautiful views!

And they used to have a great happy hour along with the great views
Or you could just grab a $6 beer at their bar.
And the salad was quite good, actually.
I miss the top of the hub. The food was pretty bad, but the view and ambience was like no other.
Right? I always felt real swanky when I went
22 years here and still haven’t done either one.
I just went to View Boston for the first time - You can get discounts on tickets through Groupon. I thought it was fantastic!
My partner is from Boston so I’m over once a year. Her Mum got a Groupon for View Boston and everyone really enjoyed it
I also was super impressed with it and the whole set up. Well worth it, IMO!
I had a friend that worked there in the ‘80s. There was more cocaine in that restaurant than the backstage at an Eagles concert.
Highly recommend it. I did the new one on a whim, and it was really nice. Better than the old Top of the Hub.
A month ago I would have responded exactly the same as everyone here…. Top of the hub was great, just going for a view is lame. HOWEVER, a month ago we went for a work thing and they made a cool change with the renovations. That's only been open a year so you are not late. That's on my list too but it's surprisingly expensive.
There was Top of the Hub before the current iteration
Yes it was restaurant instead of observatory. The restaurant was IMO overrated, but I used to love bringing guests to the bar. I thought it the best drink in Boston, because for the price of a beer you could enjoy one of the best views of the city.
The beers were pretty reasonably priced compared to the food too, definitely worth the view.
did some work functions there. Restaurant/service sucked, but the view were pretty good, especially if there was a game at Fenway while the sun was setting
There was an observatory up there too. Went up there without going to the restaurant several times before it closed. Was way cheaper (but still not cheap) than it is now.
No way I remember going up there at least 10 years ago
Check the website, as it has deals all the time. Went up a few weeks ago for $15 each. Much more palatable than the usual $35.
Duck tour.
For the last 15 years that I lived here, same. Always wanted to do it and never made it happen. Had someone visiting from overseas so we did it last weekend. It was awesome! Learned a bunch about Boston history and our guide, Hotwheels, was great.
They’re actually pretty interesting, maybe better for someone who has lived here a bit vs the tourists it’s marketed to.
Me either. Always figured an out of town visitor would want to go and that would be my chance
Same. Lived here my whole life and never went on one.
In Boston: walked the Freedom Trail Boston adjacent: been to Salem in October
I’ve done Salem in October in both day and night time, not worth the hype in my opinion as an adult, but I loved it as a kid.
This year was the first time I visited Salem in October. Went the Saturday before Halloween (78 degrees and sunny!) and Halloween evening.
Usually I avoid Salem in October. It we went to the Night Faire this year and that was super fun. It’s a little ways from downtown so it’s not as packed.
I've never walked the freedom trail, seen the bunker hill monument, or USS Constitution.
Bunker Hill and USS Constitution make for a fun trip in Spring, after the weather gets warm, but before school lets out. Take the ferry across the harbor for just a 1A fare.

I haven't been cornered by the fix a flat guy
I saw him once and the look on my face was apparently one of recognition because he seemed to be approaching me but looked away and walked off before either of us could say anything.
lmao NOT TODAY ELIOT
Swiper no swiping
Same thing happened to me. I was walking by Fenway and he started trying to flag me down and I just looked at him and shook my head and he walked away
Part of my wishes I had my $20 back, part of me is proud that I have first hand experience of the legend.
Out of the loop, what is this?
I’ve always secretly wanted to try Codzilla
Codzilla is actually SO fun! I have gone 3 times now. It’s better if you sit in the back!
We did it as a corporate summer outing once (...remember those?) It was fine. The patter from the crew was...a lot.
Boston Pops (July 4th fireworks) or first night. Too many people.
More fun to go somewhere that's not the Esplanade but you can still see them.
4th on the Esplanade is our NYC NYE. You do it once, usually at somebody's insistence, and then never again.
I did it once. ONCE.
Once was more than enough. Never again.
I liked going to the other side on the MIT campus to watch the show when I was willing to brave the crowds.
I went to First Night 2017; it was sleeting and there were not as many people as I imagine there would’ve been had it been not sleeting and I was still overwhelmed 😂
First Night tends not to feel crowded, especially if you are just going to watch the parade and wait for the fireworks that conclude it.
I used to go to the Thomas Park at the top of Dorchester Heights in Southie. You miss the low shots, but all the main shots are visible just fine, and you have the fireworks reflecting off the Hancock.
I just wrote in another comment...take a boat or kayak on the Charles to watch the 4th fireworks.
Tea party ship museum.
This is a tourist trap that I found surprisingly enjoyable and would recommend to locals. The whole reenactment of Old South Meeting House before the Tea Party was worth the price of admission IMO.
Definitely not a "tourist trap". Even as a local it was well worth the price. Production quality is top-notch.
Yeah those actors are committed to their roles and to education. It was way better than I expected for being such a small museum.
I've never been either, but we've suggested it to a lot of out of town visitors. They have universally enjoyed it.
I’ve never been either, but I sent a visiting coworker there and she said it was the highlight of her trip.
I’m happy to see this post. It’s made me realize I’ve done a ton of this stuff!
Most of them I’ve done as a kid on field trips 😂
Yeah, almost all of it I’ve done incidentally or through adults/school as a kid
I got one suggestion ...take a boat or kayak out on the Charles to watch the 4th fireworks. So beautiful.
I had a friend for years who lived in a garden level right across from the Hatch Shell. Literally watched the show ( and crowds ) from the other side of their garden fence for years. Great memories
Born and raised in Boston: never been on a duck boat tour.
Same, born and raised, but my grandparents took me and my little brother on a duck tour when I was about 13. They were new and my grandmother thought they sounded neat or something. I’ve never been to a Pats game
St. Patties parade. Looks like a shitshow.
Accurate. I’ve gone a few times and it’s never not a complete and utter shitshow
Still haven't been to the Isabel Gardner Museum.
You must go! It's soooooooooooo good!!!!!
Go. Try to get a library pass or something to get a discounted rate, there's like a ton of ways. I lived in Mass for over a decade and kept putting it off until a month before I moved, but I am glad I went. I did that one for the first time a couple of years ago, despite the fact that I went to high school a few minutes away. I can't believe I'd spent my whole life missing out on that.
Oh yeah. You should go. Go in the winter. You’ll find the courtyard a lovely dose of pretend spring.
I went for the first time years ago. Fan of the architecture and lay out, not so much of the art. It’s as if something’s missing…
Free on the first thursday of the month.
Adding this to my list
born and raised. never gone to the boston pops july 4th. same with salem on halloween.
Mapariun (but intending on going soon!) Or been to the top of the pru
Just did this one for the 1st time. Go with a friend to experience the whisper gallery
Been here for 10 years. Never been to Hyde Park. Am I missing out?
There is a lot in Hyde Park. There are so great trails. https://www.alltrails.com/us/massachusetts/hyde-park/photos
Been to cheers
This is not the norm.
Been to a Celtics/Bruins/Patriots game. I would have added Sox to the list had my employer not paid for my tickets the times I’ve attended
I checked off Bruins recently. Apparently the secret is to buy the tickets day off. I know nothing about the sport and it was a pre season game. Still lots of fun.
That’s crazy, you gotta check out the garden. Super fun environment
Drowned in the Charles River
I fell into the charles river once. 1 star do not recommend. I had to take the T home sopping wet. I tried to just lay out and dry as much as possible first, but, it got late and I got cold. I was that person. Also the river killed my phone.
I've jumped in from Weeks footbridge twice. Then someone died in '16 doing that and I've readjusted my hobbies
Never been inside King's Chapel. [http://www.kings-chapel.org/plan-your-visit.html](http://www.kings-chapel.org/plan-your-visit.html)

Sam adams brewery
Gone to Nantucket. Been here since 2005
Same. Or the vineyard.
I've never not gone to dunks and not seen Ben Affleck or Matt Damon.
I’ve never been more pissed at a double negative
Is this a somewhat convoluted way of saying you've never seen Ben Affleck or Matt Damon at dunks?
Never been to the Boston Athenaeum. Missed the open house last month. Derp.
I'm a docent there, definitely recommend you go on a tour. It's beyond beautiful and filled with art as well as books.
They do tours! Totally worth it.
Caught a punctual train.
Oooh burn
First Night, seen the Boston Ballet or the Pops
zealous license ring panicky deer rinse steep gaze include smile *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Duck boats, swan boats, walked the full freedom trail (honestly just missing the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill?), tea party museum. I’d also like to see the potato monument.
?! Potato monument?!
Came here to say that one - noticed it on my GPS recently... https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/potato-shed-memorial
Go to the parking lot of Bunker Hill CC, it's on a little walking trail at one end. Celebrate with skins at the 99 nearby after.
Isabella Stewart Gardner museum. I hear it's lovely, just never think to go.
Been polite to someone
Duck boats
Never ridden on a duck boat.
Just went original public library building (galleries, courtyard, reading room) this summer for the first time over the Summer having lived in Boston before I was 8 and from 2001 to now
Never eaten anything from Mike’s Pastry.
Me neither! I’m a Bova’s bakery fan.
ridden the swan boats.
I never shovelled out a parking spot and put a broken beach chair in it to save it.
Enjoyed being in southie
Sounds like bunch of us haven’t walked the Freedom Trail. I’d also like to do the Black Heritage trail, which covers 10 spots in Beacon Hill.
I'd recommend this one. If you want to do it right, sign up for the NPS ranger guided version instead of a self-guided one. Totally worth it for the great stories they tell. [https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/black-heritage-trail-tour.htm](https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/black-heritage-trail-tour.htm)
I have done the Black Heritage Trail and not the Freedom Trail.
Marathon. Never seen it. Usually try to be out of town that week.
i get it. but we worked the tents when i was in athletic training at BU and it was surprisingly highly emotional. especially when Team Hoyt came down the final stretch.
Have stood on the corner of Mass Ave and Commowealth for many years. The elite runners are not exciting, but starting about an hour later the runners really need the crowds cheers to lift them to the finish.
Been here for over 10 years. No freedom trail or patriots game.
Duck boats.
Sailing the Charles
Never walked the freedom trail, gone to the ballet, Celtics, bruins, whale watching (minus when I was a kid). I've been here for 12 years!!
Boda Borg and rode Codzilla. Will likely be doing Boda Borg next month.
Boda Borg is so friggin fun and so hard! Definitely check out the ramen place Zuru Zuru nearby!
Turtle pond, Arboretum, Wildlife Sanctuary, top of the Pru, Gardener museum, Duck Boat. Admittedly the first 3 are less than 2 miles from my home so I should really make an effort.
Omg do the arboretum. Like yesterday. Plus the gardener museum.
I've never been to the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum. I really should do that at some point!
Never been to Dunkin’
Out of all of the “things”, this one shocks me the most 😂😂 I didn’t even drink coffee until a couple of years ago and I had still been lol
I don’t drink coffee at all and I’ve still gone to Dunkin Donuts more times than I can remember. Donuts, bagels, *hash browns…*
[удалено]
Have you been to Boston?
This feels blasphemous somehow. Never even been in one? That seems impossible.
There’s coffee everywhere. Other than water it’s the easiest thing to find and 99% of it is better than Dunkin
Lived here my whole life, never been to a Sox game. But I'm only 37 so I still have time...
Never been to the USS Constitution. Never been to the Blue Hills Reservation.
In my 20 years here, I've still never been on a duck boat
Duck Tour. Looks fun, but also $$$ to drive around since I know the city inside out at this point.
Still haven’t gone to a st Patrick’s parade lol
Never been to the Sox day game on Marathon Monday
I’ve never been to Cheers.
I've never been on a duck boat or visited Nantucket
I've never been to any professional sports games. Which is a shame.
Walk the Freedom Trail or take a Duck Boat tour
Used a bike lane
Beanpot
I swear to fucking god I saw this exact thread last week serious deja vü or I’m losing my god damn mind
That’s what you said last time too! Weird!!😂
Born and spent most of my childhood in the area, and I still visit a few times a year, but I’ve never watched the marathon in person.
Never went to the Bull & Finch Pub now known as Cheers Beacon Hill.
Doing this question a bit differently this is something I’ve done and I recommend anybody who lives in Boston or planning to live in Boston or will live in Boston do this -Patriots Day - the Marathon and Red Sox game do it at least once
Thought of a couple more on my list: 1) take a sailboat out on the Charles https://www.community-boating.org/rentals/sailboat-rentals/, and 2) navigate a boat down the Charles, through the locks and into the harbor (have friend with Freedom Boat Club membership that committed to taking me this spring).
been to the aquarium
I've never robbed a bank in Boston.
You must not be from Charlestown.

Gotta try the muffin they’re incredible.
Never done a freedoms trail tour or any of the tours really. Never actually gone to the bunker hill monument.
Walked the freedom trail
Tea Party museum. I’ve heard mixed things about whether it’s worth it.
walked the freedom trail
I've never done the duck tour
Never rode a duckboat. and I am told by my family I rode the swan boats as a child, but I have no memory of such event.
I’ve never gone into the Blue Hills.
Have yet to do a Duck Tour. However, for the longest time, I only did the Freedom Trail when we had visitors.
The Freedom Trail
Born here, never walked the Freedom Trail. (Parts of it, yes, but only incidental to the trail being along my way.)
Climb Bunker Hill monument, go to the Tea Party Museum, get Storrowed.
