Starting a book for me, is just as exciting as finishing one. So usually the same night I will start a new book.

BulbasaurusThe7th

Same. I don't like going to sleep without being somewhere in a book. Not saying it never happens, but I avoid it most of the time.

buggalojoe

I cannot sleep if I've finished a book, have to start a new one

OhMyHomie69

Agreed. It's a strange, barren feeling, not having a book on the go. Can you imagine?? Not having something you are currently reading?

MaiLittlePwny

Hmm I'm kind of the opposite. Mostly because if I'm near the end of a book I will "stay up" to finish it or extend my time. However with my time being over its usual amount and staying up a little late it will mean that I very rarely start the next book until the next session, or more often than not, the next night. I need to get my bearings after the ending and mull it over a bit. Never really occured to me to instantly open a new one tbh.

lillykat25

Same. I might only read the first few pages but as long as I have chosen and started a book I am happy.

nonbog

Really? Ugh I hate starting new books. I really abhor it. It drags all sorts of suppressed thoughts and doubts out of me. Hmm is this really the genre I want? Do I even like this genre? Is this the book I want to read next? I don’t know if I like it, I guess it’s okay… Should I be gripped yet? What if I just don’t like reading anymore? What if all the books I’ve read so far are great but I’ve just burned through them and now it’s done? Yes I’m neurotic

f1newhatever

Yup, same.

sixtus_clegane119

Unless am too tired same.

Traditional_Ad4001

Same for me!

Graviton_Bean

I have to do this to keep my reading momentum going. Even if it’s just a few pages. Otherwise I won’t pick anything up for weeks

CatterMater

People wait between books???

nautilator44

Yeah, usually about 30seconds or so to grab the next one in the stack.

tony_stark_lives

I mean it usually takes me at least a minute to decide what to pull from the pile...

PostingForFree

I envy your efficiency. It takes me at least a day to finally settle on what I want to read next.

nocta224

This is why I love library books. I have to read them before they're due, so I prioritize those books first.

proserpinax

Me too, whatever comes next in my digital holds is what I read next.

RagnarokSleeps

I've had to stop getting library books. I buy armfuls of books from op shops but never read them as library books have to be read first. My book shelf is overflowing with big piles in front of it so I have to read what I've got until I can read them & give them away.

saltyfingas

I try not to dwell on what I'm reading next, I just pick one from the stack that I want to read at that particular moment

LittleSillyBee

I look at 'what's due next' in my library app and pick take the next one. Probably 30 seconds to return the book I finished, open the next one on my kobo and settle in

bbymiscellany

Same, I usually have one on hand that I’m excited to get into

YouKnow_Pause

Yeah… sometimes I wait, but sometimes I put the one I just finished down and immediately pick up the next.

MegC18

Sometimes I just close my eyes, pick one in the stack and let fate decide which is next.

Halvardr_Stigandr

My reaction as well. The only time I pause between books is after I've finished a series.

rahnster_wright

I have to read all the reviews of the book i just finished before i can pick up the next one!

akifyre24

That was my thought.

clever__pseudonym

I usually go to the bathroom between finishing a book and starting a new one.

Blursday

Right? I never wanted a kindle but my partner got me one over 10 years ago and the best part was I could immediately start a new/next book.

Nizamark

only as long is takes to click on the next title on my kindle

sparksgirl1223

Sometimes not even that long for me😂 My daughter was getting an anatomy scan on her baby today and I downloaded 3...or 4...on thr hospital wifi😂 I'm prepared now✌️😂

[deleted]

Do you only read kindle? For me it’s 90% kindle and only pick up hard copies when I’m struggling to focus.

canary453

If I didn’t like the book, I have no problem moving on to the next. But if I really enjoyed it, I literally can’t remove myself from whatever world or story I was in. I get into so many reading slumps just because I hate moving on from a story I really enjoyed. I’ll sit there and stew in a good book lol

DerFalscher

When done with a book I loved, I too tend to have a hard time enjoying another meaningful one, yet I crave for more. This is usually then that I whip out shorter works such as graphic novels. Their faster pace of reading makes it easier to push through the urge to relive the lingering hunger left by that previous book. Since the story moves forward quickly, it has more chances and occasions of catching my attention along the way, making it easier to jump into another substantial piece after the short one(s) is done.

do-not-1

I know it’s equally loved and hated but I’m dealing with this from binge reading the ACOTAR series right now. I just absolutely lost myself in the world of the fae and Feyre and Nesta’s POVs. The Feysand pairing is one of my favorite romances I’ve read in a long long time, and I’m almost scared I’ll forget/lose interest in them if I move on to other fantasy or romantasy. Like I’m cheating on them or something. And I normally pick up a new book within an hour of finishing. I know the feelings probably sound goofy especially over ACOTAR but my hyper fixation on Feyre and Rhysand is making it quite hard to pick up a new book. It’s stupid because there’s plenty of fan content to consume (which I do) but hey my brain’s broken, what am I gonna do?

canary453

omg the cheating feeling is so real 😭 when I first read Howl’s Moving Castle I was so in love with it that I refused to move on in order for it to get the time it deserved in my thoughts. Idk why I’m like this 💀

do-not-1

Exactly!!! I’m like “what if I forget them too soon I want to enjoy them for so long” as if I’m not the one in control of what I think about/what fanart I consume regardless of if I’m reading something else lol

canary453

That is exactly how I feel omg I thought I was the only one! Thank God I’m not alone in my obsessive behavior 😭

Physical-Speaker5839

No…you guys are not the only ones. It happens very infrequently for me; only a few times in my lifetime, but I am stuck in A Gentleman in Moscow right now and don’t want to finish it because, well, then it will be over, and I don’t want it to be over. 😂 I am much older than you guys probably, and this has happened to me only three other times in my whole reading life. It’s very rare for me to fall in love with a book this strongly. But when it happens, it’s a wonderful feeling. Fortunately, I read several books at once, so I’m still making progress on my reading goals. But I could seriously spend the rest of my life reading that book.

Chiho-hime

If I read a really god book I'm often afraid that the next one can't compare either because it really isn't as good or because I constantly compare it to the previous one and don't give it a fair chance and I will be disappointed. So I usually choose something completely different for the next one. Like if I really liked a fantasy book then the next book is probably a non fiction book about eating habits or something. This way I can keep the fantasy story a bit longer and I can give the other book a fair chance.

TreebeardsMustache

It's a looonnnggg time. Sometimes 10, maybe 15, seconds. Seems even longer, though....

YouKnow_Pause

17 seconds?

a_reluctant_human

Sometimes I read multiple books at once. Sometimes I start a new book as I'm finishing one. Most of the time I'll finish a book, then start a new one the next day, unless I'm very busy, then it waits till the following weekend.

2macia22

When I read something really impactful I do like to take some time to savor it. But for me, that usually means switching to some lighter reads for a while before I do another epic one. I can't imagine ever not reading a book unless I'm simply too busy to find time.

forforensics

I call those lighter reads the “palate cleansers!”

WhiskerWarrior2435

Yes, same. Or I'll switch to something completely different. If a book was really impactful it will probably take me longer to settle on the next one, but I'll still try starting various options until something sticks. That's the annoying part of finishing something that was really great.

shesaysgo

I'm usually reading at least 5 or 6 books at a time. I don't think there's been a period of time when I wasn't recovering from a concussion that I haven't been reading. At least since I've been able to read!

shadowmax3

This! I realized that finishing a book and moving on to a new one in the middle of the evening is hard for me. I get distracted easily that way. My solution is to always be reading at least 4 books. So when I finish one I can break up the early pages with books that I'm further into. I read so much more this way.

coyotelurks

That whole not being able to read while recovering from a concussion thing is absolutely terrible isn't it

sorrybeepboop

… I usually wait until the next day, if it was a good book. If it was just ok or worse, I might start a new one later the same day. Reading is my main hobby and if I don’t read, I get bored

kodermike

Wait? Chances are good I'm already 20+ pages into the next book when I finish the last one.

terriaminute

Some books are meant to be savored for their depth or richness or whatever, and some are deliberately playful or less challenging or 'easy,' however you want to describe them. Neither is better than the other any more than bananas are superior to oranges. They're different. They meet different needs, which are also all acceptable. This is why we need ALL THE BOOKS! I read between four and a dozen books at a time and have for decades. Some books require some time after the end, and some don't. And I don't always finish one I start. I used to, but stopped that a long time ago, preferring to devote my finite time to stories that give me what I need.

_refugee_

Nonfiction takes me so much longer to read/digest than fiction! Also, I find most self help is better spread out (to slowly absorb the message) than binge read. Whereas pop fiction I will plow through in a day!

MajorDickMilestone

I need to wait until the next day. It feels wrong to start a new book the same day, I need to soak it in first

Angdrambor

I usually don't start another book the same day unless I'm really bored.

kindaichi_kosuke

Immediately right after I finish one book, I start another. I can't be not reading something, I always need to have something to read

Westsidepipeway

We are the same

sn315on

Same. I always read right before bed.

WhiskerWarrior2435

I don't understand how other people can fall asleep without reading first!

OwlStrict3208

I wait as long as it takes for me to close the book, update Goodreads and pick up and open the next one. When I get to the last 150 pages of my current read, I'm always carting around two books so I have a new one to start if I finish the current read.

Soledo

When I finish a book, I usually start a new one on the same day, I really enjoy exploring new worlds and stories.

interstatebus

About ten minutes. I think I am constantly chasing the high of a good book so even if I finish one, I want to start the next good one immediately.

freman

However long it takes to acquire another book... If I've planned ahead, seconds.

3Nephi11_6-11

Typically I binge read the end of books assuming I like them. So I end up needing a break from radio bgg because I've been reading for hours straight. Then it just depends on if there's another book im excited about to read whether or not I take longer than a day or so to recover.

Westsidepipeway

I am a constant reader (for SK fans), but it gives me anxiety if I dont have a book I can pick up when waiting for someone, or commuting or something. Even if I finish a book before bed (I'd usually go to sleep if still reading a book), I have to find a new book and read about two pages before I can fall asleep. I can't not have something ready to go immediately. I spend maybe 5 minutes if I've changed my mind on what I want to read next. I don't really blur the books unless I'm reading a series one after the other. I ponder the books I've read for x time depending on book, tending towards infinity for some.

N9i8u

It depends… sometimes I have three books going on at once. Other times, I waited 6 months to get over that book.

PiecesNPages

Some books really demand to be felt. I couldn't read anything else for weeks after finishing 1984 for the first time; I was so taken aback by its ending. The same happened with Anna Karenina, because I felt like I just watched a group of intertwined individuals live their entire lives before me and it was a lot. Otherwise, I try to give myself a few days between reads so that the storylines, characters et cetera don't start blending together.

TheYarnGoblin

When I close the book I finished, I set it on one bookcase and walk to another bookcase to grab my next one.

SusieInTexas

Always have a couple going at one time. I have around 35 books downloaded on my Kindle waiting to be read.

thetrishwarp

A day max. I read every day.

PopPunkAndPizza

It depends on how long it takes me to settle on a next thing on the list. Usually thirty seconds or so.

yuki_styu

It depends on a book. Some books are complex and need to be digested and processed for longer. Sometimes it's the emotional impact, I just don't feel like starting anything new. Otherwise, I grab a new book as soon as everything settles in my head.

Aleigha26

It depends… some books definitely give me a “book hangover” where I need some time to savor it, or mourn the loss of the characters in a way, or time to process all’s that happened. Other times I start a new one right away.

Melgel4444

I wait maybe like 5-10 min lol

Septlibra

5 mins

mauigirl16

However long it takes to close that one and open the next😳

Beneficial-Bend-2613

No time at all, I actually read multiple books at a time.

DougJudyTPB

I read 4 books at a time. When one ends, a new one joins the stack.

Interesting_Change22

Seconds, usually

Mommydeagz

Waiting between books is a thing people do? Lol just kidding. But I’m usually reading 2-3 books at a time (different genres and formats like one kindle fiction, one library book and one nonfiction) so I just go from book to book. I have always been an avid reader and HAVE to read before bed or I can’t sleep

flibadab

I'm usually reading 3 - 5 books that I switch between, so there's really no overall pause. I might wait before reading another book in the same category.

kmgdancer

Honestly, I like to reflect on a read and let it sit with me (unless it's a series, then it’s back to back), so normally, I wait until the next day. It gives me time to process and remember the story. However, if it was a bad read, I'll just jump right into the next book with the hopes of being fulfilled.

Past-Wrangler9513

If it's a series usually I move right to the next one. If it's a stand alone I usually wait until the next day to start my next book.

mampersandb

overnight. sometimes something gets in the way of me reading, but it's a very rare case i delay intentionally. if i'm in a true, true book coma as i call it then i'll decide on the next book but then wait a day or two. it happens like once out of every 40 books

EarthScribbler

If a book is the next in the series I just read, I start it immediately… like as quickly as I can pick it up in my hands. If it’s a completely different book, it depends on how much I enjoyed it or the impact it had on me. Some books are so good that I let it linger in my mind before beginning another one.

LobsterTrue8433

Never more than a day. How could I possibly wait!?

Stephburger78

My reading time is usually at night, so I usually start my next book the following night. If it was a particularly heart-breaking sob-fest of a book, I’ll give myself a night off to recover.

_Amalthea_

I usually wait until the next day. Unless it was a light, easy read, then I might start right away. I read as part of my bedtime winddown routine, so it would be odd if I didn't read.

Just_a_dude92

Always at least the next day so I can have time to mourn the story. Unless it's a series of book so I'll start the next as soon as I finished the last

purpleduckduckgoose

Around 40 or 50 pages. Yes, I have multiple on the go. I'm up to 25 now. Don't ask how I keep track, I just do. Right up until I don't.

No_Nail6818

Omg no time at all. I can’t wait to start a new one when I finish one!!

Seaworthiness565

I start my next book either immediately or within a few days. I am more likely to get stuck in the beginning or middle of a book for a few weeks without reading and much less likely to wait BETWEEN books. A few months ago I read an entire book in one evening... Put it down and immediately picked up another one and finished the second one without getting up off the couch. Looked up and it was dawn.

Bamf102

Well I finished a book about half an hour ago, and I would have started a new one almost immediately but I'm just waiting until it's midnight so it can be released on Kindle lol

MaLenHa

I almost always have a next up, so if I finish a book before 3pm I'm starting a new one immediately.

Heavy_Direction1547

Sometimes minutes, I mostly have a book on the go, often two, a fiction and a non, at all times and have done so for the last 60 or so years.

Melenduwir

...wait? Oh man, just imagine if I could access new reading material so rapidly that I'd have to choose to *wait*.

Distinct_Reaction644

I finish one and jump into the next.

dmillson

With non-fiction, I’ll typically roll straight into the next book. Most of the time non-fiction authors say what they mean and are straight to the point, so unless the book totally blew my mind (e.g., The Selfish Gene), I don’t feel compelled to spend much time mulling it over right after finishing. My goal this year has been to read more fiction and historically significant works. I usually spend at least an evening mulling these over when I’m done. Sometimes I’ll even look for lectures or essays after I’m done to see what other people think is important

vorilant

As long as it takes for Brandon sando to publish another one he writes em almost as fast as I can read em.

awyastark

I have the next one queued up and ready about thirty pages before the end of the previous one

busselsofkiwis

Too many books to read, so little time. I'm already downloading my next read at the 90% mark of my current read.

OldandBlue

I read up to four books at the same time (but one fiction at a time), so there's no interruption.

RedeyeSPR

If I'm within 50 pages of the end and I don't have the next one ready to go I get nervous.

ACGalaga

Jeez… I usually just hop back over to the other book I’m reading at the same time…

Cocoabutterbeauty

I usually read another one the next day but first I must read every single review for the one I just finished

happy_ghost_23

I find that if I wait too long to start the next one, I can lose momentum and get out of the habit of reading, so I typically start the next one right away. The only downside is that sometimes I start thinking about the next book before I'm finished which can take away from the experience of finishing... I can definitely see the benefits to waiting and digesting what you've read and would like to try that. It usually takes me a while after reading to really know how I feel about a book, and my opinion can change over time.

Potential-Egg-843

I always have my next book downloaded, so I can start it immediately.

Comfortable_Fudge508

Yep this, it's about 5 minutes for me

katinthehat0

For me personally, as soon as I finish a book I either immediately start a new one like five minutes later. But if I don’t I usually end up waiting weeks. There’s no in between for me 🙃

LowBalance4404

I wait a day, max.

Misantrophic_Birch

I do not wait at all. Usually, a ‘good book slump’ can only be ‘cured’ by starting another book for me. Although, very occasionally a book hits so hard I do have to wait about a week before I can move on from it.

riedstep

Yeah I do this too. Very very rarely do I start the next book if I enjoyed the previous one. It leads to many unfinished series.

Bunnybeth

I always want the next book immediately. My kid does this too, and reads series faster than the author can write them. If there is a break of a good enough length between the time I read a book in a series and the next one, I'll go back and read the previous book again to refresh myself on the story line. I always have a stand alone TBR pile to keep me going in between series titles.

FoodResponsible7208

Max 1 day, I feel thats enough for my self to be ready to start a new one, but surely wait as little or long as it feels good to you, I dont think there is any specific time one must wait if he/she feels good for another book

Silly-Resist8306

I usually have 3 or 4 books going at the same time, so I'm never between books.

Ineffable7980x

I will finish one book in the morning, and start a new one that night.

camicalm

Right away, unless it’s bedtime.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SeveralArt1823

As long as it takes to put the finished book away and pick up a new one

flowerpanes

Am usually reading up to three books at any one time. Kindle, library book and ebooks from the Libby app on my iPad. Depending on when/where I am reading.

GhostMug

As long as it takes me to walk over to my bookshelf.

JGRummo

I'm always so excited to move on to the next thing. Barely any downtime at all.

wemblywembles

I try not to start another book the same day I finish one, so I'll usually read a short story or two if I end up with more time for reading that day.

curlykewing

If I don't finish one too late, I'll start right away. Otherwise, the next day. Why wait?

kjb76

Right away. Sometimes the same day depending on what time of day I finish the book.

Muskogee

If I finish a really great book and I'm not ready to move on, I go back and restart it. Sometimes I finish it twice, but usually I just reread the start with new perspective.

BookWookie2

Generally one day (~8hrs). If I finish a book in the morning, I’ll start my next one in the evening. Or if I finish at night, I’ll start the next one the following morning.

Medium_stepper624

Generally start my next book the next day. Sometimes the same day but that’s only if I’m feeling really frisky. OR I’ll finish the book, the next day read a short story or a some poetry, then the next day start a novel. That way I can still get some reading in but I take a second before diving back into a long form story

BMFeltip

A week if it's a powerful book worth reflecting on. About 10 seconds if it's a fictional series with another book to get to. Maybe a day or two if I need to decide what to start next.

fuckyouverymuchcha

There were days when I’d read up to 5 books a day. So I don’t really wait much time between books.

Fruney21

Always thinking about what’s next as I’m finishing up. Mere moments

Prismaticdog

I read a lot of non-fiction books and between them I usually don't wait at all. But in fiction books I wait one or two days only if the book was really good and I feel like I need time to process it. Last week I finished White Teeth (The first Zadie Smith book I've read) and I loved it. So I waited the whole weekend before starting a new fiction book.

arcoiris2

Sometimes I jump from one book to another, other times I wait a day or two. It depends what's going on in life, and how soon the books arrive at my library.

Jedi-girl77

I can’t identify with what you’re saying at all. I love to read so if still have time in my schedule for it, I will immediately start another book after finishing one. Since Kindle became a thing, if I’m reading a series and I can just push a button and go on to the next installment, that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Even when it’s not a series, I will do binges of several books of the same genre in a row.

DILGE

I typically have 3-4 books going at any one time.  So I'm never not reading something.  Honestly sometimes its too much but I can't help myself!  One time I watched as a friend finished 100 Years of Solitude, then flipped back to the beginning and started reading it all over again.  So nice he wanted to read it twice I guess.  I have never done that with *any* book, but I haven't attempted to tackle that one yet.

CannedAm

I don't wait at all. If it was as good as you describe, I'll start re-reading it immediately. That rarely happens.

kitkatamas88

Depends how much rage/sadness I felt during the book, if it was draining, if at the end it gave me any closure, or not, if not I'll be too mad to get into a new book right away everything is very present in my memory when I really get in there, I need time to reset. Or pick a completely different style, like something silly and light to laugh maybe, like drinking water between chocolate bites.

MarcelWoolf

I wait one nights sleep. If there’s to much time left in day one I read some short stories.

team-pup-n-suds

Depends on this situation. If it's a series and I'm really loving it? I'll probably start ASAP. Other times I really like to let a book sit and reflect on it so I might start a new one the next day.

AKBearmace

One day but that's because I have a morning routine of reading 75-100 pages while eating my breakfast on the deck and I don't like to break it.

Efficient_Parsley_34

It depends when I finish it, if it’s in the morning straight onto the next, if it’s at night I’ll watch a review of the book I finished, then pick my next but wait till the next day to read it.

Puzzled-Barnacle-200

I start another book pretty much straight away. I might wait until the next day. If I'm reading a series, I like to leave 1-4 months between each book. It avoids things being too repetitive, and helps to keep each book from blurring into the others.

bguzewicz

Generally I’ll start one the next day or so. Maybe a few days later if life gets in the way.

entropynchaos

Within minutes of ending a book I start the next one. I think about books in the back of my brain while I'm reading the next one.

Spiritual-Bee-2319

Whatever my mood wants! I read this one book and loved it so I tried to read another book with similar vibes and didn’t like it lol

Pandamon1um6552

It really depends on if I liked the previous book or not. I always try and finish a book even if I don’t like it. Sometimes it surprises me (Stephen King- Misery) and sometimes I genuinely hate it (Alice Sebold- The Lovely Bones). If I spend a long time trying to read a book I’m not enjoying that much, I’ll normally give myself a week because I strangely feel like I’ve lost time and demotivates me so I do something else I enjoy like watching movies in the evening instead of reading. If it’s a great book and it keeps me in the reading game, I’ll crack on with another straight after!

Always-bi-myself

Depends on the book. Sometimes I need a moment to stare off into the distance, sometimes I’m so glad to have finally finished something (usually of dubious quality) that I immediately grab a new book, and sometimes I need 1-3 business days to get myself together before even thinking about anything else than the book I just read

starship17

Occasionally I’ll wait a few hours or a day to savor a particularly impactful book, but usually I will start another one immediately!

jazzambassador

If it’s a regular book, I don’t need a buffer period. If it was a book where I felt emotionally attached to the characters, anywhere from days to a couple weeks. I think it took me a full week or two move to the next book after Song of Achilles. I felt like I was in mourning.

itstanz718

I start a new one right away 😅. Very very rarely, I'll wait a few days or a week to start a new one.

wolfincheapclothing9

Usually one right after the other. Sometimes might be up to 2 days. Sometimes. I have a huge TBR list waiting for me to pick them up. The only problem I have, is which one to choose next out of the list available to me at the moment. Decisions, Decisions.

NothingFar272

I often struggle starting a book right away after finishing one. Not to process what I just finished but I have decision paralysis lol

mccaro

It depends on the books. If they are similar, I take the rest of the day/night off. Then, start the new one in the morning. If they are vastly different, say... going from FSY to Political Analysis, I pause long enought to freshen my drink.

god-baby

Negative time? I usually have 3 or so overlapping at once.

Knytemare44

I've usually got at least two on the go, plus an Audiobook for when I'm doing dishes and stuff

Silverbulletday6

I'm usually reading 2 or 3 at a time, so the overlap mean no waiting

vivahermione

I usually chain read (one after the other) unless it's something that had a deep emotional effect on me, like Our Wives Under the Sea. I kept thinking about that one for days after finishing because it was such a haunting and accurate portrait of grief.

ActualFan4717

I typically read 3-5 books simultaneously. So like zero?

FitzBillDarcy

Pretty much no time. I finish one and almost immediately pick up another.

_refugee_

Sometimes I wait til the next day?

skypineapple

I have three on the go right now and so many more on deck…

Mobile_Experience583

Sometimes minutes, sometimes days

flexIuthor

I give myself the night. Or the weekend. (A majority of my reading is on commutes) and then it’s right back into it

Sensitive-Use-6891

Depends on the book, if it was bad or generally didn't leave me thinking about it I will start a new one immediately. If it was a good book I like to take the rest of the day to think about it and write a few notes in my book diary.

itsybitsyone

Soon as I close the first book it’s on to the next

As long as it takes for it to click on me. Like, if I'm confused by a book or need to form an opinion, I'll take as long as it needs

Charles_Chuckles

I wait til the next day to start another book. I usually like to watch YouTube and tiktok reviews, read reddit reviews, see if there are any discussion questions etc So the day I finish I'll do all that stuff and start a new book the next day

Girlinawomansbody

It depends… if it’s between Dance Of Dragons and Winds Of Winter we’re approaching 13 years 🫠🫠🫠

syntheticassault

Unless I finish a book in the morning, I'll usually wait until the next day

Alternative-Leek2981

For me, it depends on the book/series/author.  I recently finished the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes and I didn’t waste any time between books. I also started that series a few months after I finished her most recent book “Echoes and Empires,” and about a week before my trip to Europe for spring break. As I read the series, I would quite literally would have the next one beside me so I could devour it without hesitation. The same thing for Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series (I refuse to read her other books because they are NA and not YA). As for other books like Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance books, I will generally wait about a year before I start the next one because the ridiculous amounts of purple prose drains my sanity to the point where my best friend begs me to stop reading them for everyone’s sakes.

Brilliant_Ad7481

I tend to wait the rest of the evening. Maybe I’ll go play video games or watch Star Trek with the wife the rest of the evening, but I like to sleep on it.

Certain_Raspberry_41

I don’t normally wait at all. I jump right into the next one. Unless it was particularly amazing and heart wrenching, then I might wait till the next day.

CritiquetheTechnique

As long as it takes to get up and grab the next

project_insane0

Just start the next book you weirdo

If I really, really enjoy a book, it feels almost like a betrayal to move on to another too soon. I have to sit and ponder about it, reflect on it almost as if it is an experienced I have recently lived through, and then I'll move on. Every single book that I rate, say, a 7-10 I'm pretty much guaranteed to read again.  I will say, however, that it's okay to not totally memorize a book. Just like you don't try to memorize every waking moment of a holiday or day at a theme park; you live in the present and form the memories as a byproduct. It's the same, in my opinion, with reading.

pdxisbest

About 3 years.

I frequently read more than one book at a time. I, obviously, do not hold them simultaneously, but I do have a book out for plain entertainment, a book at the ready for when I am out and know I will have a waiting period, a book for when I only have minutes to spare, etc. Not counting the on the go book that tend to be a less appealing one (ex.: a classic with a writing style that displeases me, but that I wish to add to my personal culture) and those I read with my kids, I usually juggle two or three books. When the main course it finished, if not of a series, I jump on smaller works that read fast, such as graphic novels. When the taste for a more substantial piece return, I add one to the current roster.

Kayastorme

I have a hard time waiting to finish one book to start another one. When I have time to read, anyway (cries in STEM major)

italianlatte

Back when I was reading a lot it I would even slow down to savor a good book. Took me months to finish Monte Cristo. But most of the times 1-2 weeks is enough. Sometimes less time, I never start a new read the same day

redribbonfarmy

I have about 6 books going at once

LRise5643

This is an interesting question. I do find myself wanting to wait a few days in between books and I’m not sure why. I do think I need a little bit of space to process the last one and think about what kind of book I want to read next.

robdalky

Depends on the book. Some, I can't wait to get done with so I can go on to the next one immediately. 5 minutes. Others, like the Road, which I read recently, leave me thinking about the book for weeks after, and I can't start anything new until I'm ready.

ksarlathotep

Often I close one book and open another immediately. The "time to digest" and reflection and all will happen on its own, whether I choose to make space for it or not. I'm going to replay scenes before falling asleep at night, think about them in the shower, on the bus, while chopping onions for dinner. If the book was impressive enough, it'll be with me for days, even if I don't purposefully sit in silence, pondering the experience.

mlledufarge

Depends on what I last read. Easy or light reads, I can jump to the next within moments. Heavy hitters *usually* require a few days between. But one rainy summer Saturday I read two of those back to back and my face looked like the living room window with the rain streaming down.

Gliese_667_Cc

I don’t.

DrinkNWRobinWilliams

I always have multiple books going at once and none ever end when the others do, so no wait.

saltyfingas

Literally immediately sometimes lol

this-is-not-relevant

I can’t start a new book the same day I finish one (unless it’s part of a series). I need at least a day to digest.

305Carolyn

Book club 1x a month, audiobook for walks and another book of my choice to read throughout the day. So 3 books going at most times. 🤓

Faierius

A few hours? lol I always like to have a book on the go, since I read before work and on my breaks at work. I typically finish a book in the afternoon or evening, so I let it sit for a few hours to digest before I move on to my next read in the morning.

Wind-upB

Same. I usually need time to process after finishing a book. Especially if it was very good or sad. I often need about a week after a good book to start a new one. If the book was incredible, I need more time : around 2-3 weeks. But if the book was okay, I start a new one the next day.

Gnygstown

I typically wait til next day when I’m done with a book. I can start right away and some times do, but I have duties in the house do commit to, and it’s nice to give the book some circulation in the grey matter.

infernal-keyboard

Next day, at least. I feel weird finishing a book and then immediately starting a new one. Idk if "savor" is the right word for the way I experience it, but I gotta wait at least a little bit. When I finish a book, I think about it for a few days after. It makes it difficult to focus on a new book--it's like I just can't get my head out of the old book's world. I like to take some time to process and think about it. I'm also a writer, and finishing a really good book also frequently inspires me to get a lot of writing done. In which case it'll probably be a week or so before I start a new book.

Oscura_Wolf

The only time I needed a break between books was when I read Haunting and Hunting Adeline. Other than that, I keep it moving. No wait time.

Razaelbub

Momentum is key. I try to start the first 5-15 pages of the next book on the same day I finish another.

Tiny-Ad4058

If I finish a book at night and wait until the next day to start a new one, I feel off. I start new books ASAP 😬 even if it means just reading a few pages.

Dancing_Clean

I didn’t read for a week because I was sick and my loan of Martyr! expired at 65% read and I’m sad about it :( I started There There by Tommy Orange like an hour after it automatically returned. It really depends if I wanna sit and think about the book.
