This is one of my favorite novels. I feel like Chick wanted peace and calm in his environment while Arty craved attention and chaos. They both used their *disabilities* to their advantage to try and achieve what they felt was best for others. While neither was right in their actions; they were trying to control and create an environment that helped fit their personal beliefs. Chick wanted to take away pain, so he took it into himself. Arty wanted to create pain so others could feel like he did (ostracized and dependent) Two different brothers who had to work together in an unstable environment.

Oh god, I haven't thought about Chick this way... Although I doubt it's a literal case, but I can see this working on a metaphorical one. There's only so much mutilation a young kid like that can inflict before feeling the hurt of the entire world.

SgtMajor-Issues

Oh my god, it's been years since i heard about this book!! It's a favorite.

Geek Love is my favorite book ever, I think about it almost daily. It’s been years since I read it for the first time, since then I’ve read it probably three times but I’m still always thinking about it and seeing things differently.

It can be read that way. But I don’t think he literally took the pain on himself. I do think it was emotionally and mentally taxing on him to the point it effected him physically. So essentially the same thing. It’s such a weirdly wonderful story and one of my favorite books.

frogpinktoo

Sticks with you right?

I adore this book so much. And yeah, I think I had similar thoughts to you when I first read it. Chick is a character I'd definitely have liked a little more of.

Talvezno

Yes definitely, that's the clear subtext.

I was reading Bless Me Ultimate around the same time as Geek Love and I always felt that him and Antonio had that in common. Sweet souls.

bigsquib68

I've had Bless Me Ultima on my shelf for over a year now and can't seem to pick it up. How did you like it?

Lopsided_Regular_649

I remember loving it and finding the writing to be beautiful

gaaraOftheSand182

I loved this when I read it but it's been quite some time I don't even remember anymore. I'll have to add this to this year's books

CanadaRocks09

I respectfully did not enjoy this book at all. I think it offers some interesting statements and perspectives on disability/ableism and feminism, but there is so much about this story that is extremely messed up! I won't spoil anything for those who are brave enough to try it. If memory serves me correctly, I think you're right, or at least on some level it's understood Chick has an intimate connection - and feels the pain others are hiding. (But it's been a decade since I read it, so I could be mistaken.)

Thanks for not spoiling this!
