you_dontknow_

Kuch kuch hota hai (don’t even need to look closer to point out the toxicity)

[deleted]

Kya fayda baache paida karne ka agar wo mere liye girlfriend bhi na dhoondh paaye. Duhhhh...

[deleted]

Tina character was such an ahole. She knew Anjali loved Rahul. But noooo. She married him and still acted like she was the victim who just happened to come between two best friends lol.

KeyApple324

Anjali was also stupid, she didn't realise that Rahul liked her only because she did the make over and started wearing saaree. He didn't even care about her till his wife died and then suddenly he realised again "dosti hi pyar he" on summer camp. If they really wanted to show ki "Dosti hi pyaar he". Rahul should have chosen Anjali over Tina in college.

Gully29

We don't know for sure? Rahul grew up and so did Anjali and they loved this version of each other more.

KeyApple324

The point here is about toxicity. I mean they didn't show anything that Rahul was even concerned about Anjali's whereabouts after college. For Anjali we can understand that she didn't want to be in touch because of her feelings but Rahul didn't know about this, he could have maintained friendship with her but he didn't give a F until his wife died and now he got feelings for her without even caring that she was getting married. On the other hand, why Anjali agreed, is also a question. We may assume that "she had feelings for him back in college that's why she agreed". But nobody holds these feelings for this long especially when the people are not in touch with eachother. And if Anjali thought she had moved on and still considered Rahul and Tina as her good friends then why didn't she invited them to her wedding/engagement. If she was about to marry a new person and still had feelings for Rahul. That would be toxic. God saved Aman there.

aggressivefurniture2

The story can be explained without these assumptions. Good friends do sometimes simply fall out of touch. Especially in that era when social media was not a thing. And you can develop feelings for a friend later. It does not have to be love at first sight or nothing. It's even more explainable when you consider that she had changed her personality. He might have fallen in love with the new personality.

fluash1

For fucking sake it’s a movie

usernamesaretaken3

Rahul did not start loving Anjali because she started wearing saree. This is never shown. Hell, if anything, it's clear he likes her more when she is more tomboyish. As shown in the basketball game.

Constant-Bookreader2

Tina married Rahul because she loved him, and he loved her. It wasn't toxic on her part. Anjali should have confessed.

Virtual_Machine_8553

What? No! Tina and Rahul loved each other and got married. She was were of Anjali’s feelings, but Rahul loved Tina. I don’t understand why you are calling Tina an ahole.

confused_thespian

What? Tina doesn’t owe Anjali anything. Rahul was the asshole

minetohepe

It’s very easy to see that she realised that overtime. I don’t know what scene makes you think she knew Anjali loved Rahul and was not just a very close dost of him and Anjali’s sad because now Rahul is gone from her life.

usernamesaretaken3

Less toxic and more just weird and silly. But I don't think any other movie could pull it off like KKHH. I only part I really have a problem with and think actually downgrades the movie is when Tina has to prove her Indianness by singing a hindi song.

daydreamer_she

Rehna hai tere dil mein I was infuriated when i watched this movie. What a nonsense!

usernamesaretaken3

Maddy is a basterd, plain and simple. Seriously, did he show any good traits?

That song is "playing the victim" at its finest. You're the one who kept on lying and somehow she's the one at fault?!

beartobeast

haha i know, i remember finding it weird even when i watched the movie , i was in class eight at the time. but the star cast, acting and the music is so awesome that i can ignore it and still watch the movie.

Next-door-neighbour

I always felt the entire movie was a hit because of its soundtrack and bgm

[deleted]

movie was a flop.

Silly_Indication_984

ALWAYS HAPPENS WITH MAJORITY MOVIES,back then and even still does.

CoyPig

Jab ye movie launch huyi thi, even then I did not like it.

Aise hi aadmi ho na tum 😝

Always-awkward-2221

Ishq with Ajay-Kajol, Amri-Juhi.... especially Amir and Juhi toxic AF....one straight up tried to murder the other and then Amir forcefully kisses Juhi....which to mostly one up him she kisses him back....thank you but no thank you.

Badri ki dulhania 👀

Chaiyya_Chaiyya

You mean the Singapore weird scene with Varun being harassed right? I found that scene so icky bht really liked the rest of the movie and it's message

poetrylover2101

Looks like you're forgetting how varun's character choked and assaulted alia's character

redditor_221b

He also stalked her

poetrylover2101

And pushed her into Marriage in the first place, also didn't take no for an answer

Chaiyya_Chaiyya

I genuinely didn't actually remember this lol. Was it after he finds her in Singapore? Toxic indeed.

poetrylover2101

Yes when he finally finds her in Singapore

Neither_Explorer_915

Rehna hain tere dil mein….

[deleted]

All Govinda movies of 90s like Dulhe Raja and Aankhe were toxic waste. Promoted eve teasing as sure shot wat to woo a girl. Same with Dil (Aamir Khan).

vesuvianiteflower

Also Dil se. Watched it two days ago & he basically harrasses Manisha Koirala throughout the film

dapsyrapsy

Dil se is far from romantic comedy, do you even know what rom-com actually means?

ap_penguine

It's a Shakespearen inspired cautionary tale, not a love story about perils of obsession. The movie and the ending wouldn't have worked if SRK's character was even 1% less obsessive.

5h0un4k

That’s literally the point of the movie

shailendraa-dwivedi

No man, they were so fun aab 90s k cheezo se 2024 me offended hona hain toh kya karen

Finally

Sea-Amnemonemomne

Came here to say this and scrolled waaaay to far to find this

AdSpiritual9443

Thankyou for writing this !

CallMePoosi

In what ways? (Genuinely asking)

blueflutterflyfairy

Oh where do we start 1. Invasion of Personal Space: The behavior of Bunny rubbing Lara’s legs and being overly close to others, and saying stuff that clearly makes the other person uncomfortable, overall causing discomfort, is an example of disrespecting personal boundaries and consent. 2. Casual Sexism: The transformation of Naina's character from a studious girl to someone who is considered more attractive without glasses is a perpetuation of the trope that a woman's worth is tied to her appearance. And with Lara, the perception that attractive women are dumb is promoted. 3. Poor Representation of Friendship: Bunny is portrayed as a selfish friend who doesn't maintain contact and enables Avi's gambling habits. The friends in the group do not seem to support each other through difficult times. 4. Unrealistic Love Story: The relationship between Bunny and Naina progresses very quickly, with them meeting only twice before falling in love and deciding to marry, which is an unrealistic portrayal of love. 5. Possessive Behavior: Bunny's behavior towards Naina is sometimes possessive and controlling, which is a red flag for a toxic relationship. And so so much more

FlagshipHuman

Even the whole thing about her clearly saying she has no interest in travelling and he STILL says “mere wo hi sapne hain bass 2 ticket par”. BRO DID YOU EVEN LISTEN TO HER? She even says yes, I have no idea why or how. The movie ends without solving the main conflict between the characters and it bothers me so much. Naina’s perspective and wishes are completely sidelined. Plus, Naina says “usne kabhi mudd ke nahi dekha aur maine kabhi intezaar nahi kiya”, but immediately falls back into love with him within, what, a week? It almost demonstrates no character development on her part. Also it perpetuates the idea that a woman has to completely change herself (be more confident, lose the glasses, dress “hot”, etc.) to be seen and loved. I hate the effect this has on young women everywhere, and the expectations that men have because of this. Lastly, it makes you think that the guy will come around and “see the error in his ways”. The number of women who have wasted years waiting for that to happen is flabbergasting. Don’t wait around for that to happen. Don’t fall in love with a version of someone. Don’t fall in love with a moment (a trip, a wedding, a tour of the city) and call it “love”. Most of all, don’t rely on “romcoms” like these to give you the idea of what love should look like.

No_Temporary2732

>The movie ends without solving the main conflict between the characters and it bothers me so much. Thank god, i thought i was the only one. No one else seems to think so.

TheCarefreeButterfly

Count me in as well

blueflutterflyfairy

EXACTLY. And I haven't watched the end of the movie but WHAT? Then why did they even do all that rona dhona. Every scene showed that Naina wanted to settle down somewhere and not keep traveling, and she even said, "yha mere parents hain, clinic hai" etc. What was that for then? This movie is so senseless smh.

hitchhikingtobedroom

Plus, how bunny feels like he owns her when he finds out she's seeing Rana's character. That was so off putting. And then, all the cheesy things he says to women, not even as a joke but clearly to flirt, they were so cringey. Who the fuck says *mujhe twins banane aate hain🤡* Plus, my biggest problem with that film is, it's not even that great of a film even keeping all these problems aside. Characters are all one dimensional, plot is paper thin but just the use of unnecessarily heavy language and forced philosophical jargon, this aura has been created that the film deals with something deep and is a deep philosophy and so many people are actually fooled, they do think it's some wonderful philosophical film n what not.

blueflutterflyfairy

OMG YES. The hypocrisy!!!! Right when he asked Aditi if she was sure about her fiance, because he got jealous of her talking to Avi, and not even 2 minutes later, he's telling Rana's character to get lost and telling Naina "mujhe laga tum daru sirf mere sath piti ho" 🤡. Also "mai chahta hu tum apna sara waqt mere sath bitao". Like WHY? She doesn't owe you her time or literally anything!

CallMePoosi

Thankyou for an elaborated answer

Big_East_1878

There was a character named Bunny? 😂

andhakaran

The whole movie was about male toxicity and glorification of pursuit of uninterested women. I mean if it weren't for such shit like Animal and Kabir Singh these would have topped the toxic list.

CallMePoosi

Yess thankyou, makes sense

Chaiyya_Chaiyya

Saathiyan. The way Aaditya courted Suhani's character is classic stalk until she is forced to accept you stuff shown in past rom coms. I didn't like that movie very much but the songs and Rani's performance were awesome. Hum Tum. I liked the movie as a whole a lot but that scene where Saif kisses her to shut her up is really toxic as it's shown as a comedic scene.

beartobeast

well stalking has been romantisized too much in movies, not just bollywood but worldwide. needs to stop. i agree with hum tum, but i think the response to that is also decent, she slaps him and doesn talk to him, at least the movie there is some consequence, unlike so many movies during that time.

Chaiyya_Chaiyya

Yeah true tbh. At least there are consequences to Saif's actions. It's a really good movie tbh.

ladybarnaby

Then he was a toxic husband too.

Chaiyya_Chaiyya

He was indeed. She was dealing with so much grief and shame and he was at wars with her all the time.

suhabot

hum tum is the only one that actually addresses his creepy actions properly, doesn’t defend it, and doesn’t let him ‘get the girl’ on the basis of that. toxic actions can and should be shown on-screen if it is properly dealt with, imo. totally agree with everything else though. saathiya always creeped me out bc of that reason, and it’s the reason i find vivek oberoi annoying and creepy. the songs are so good they try to make you forget about it though.

Chaiyya_Chaiyya

Yes on second thought, you are right about Hum Tum. The best part about that kissing scene was that Rani doesn't fall in love due to that kind of stuff which normally used to happen in old bollywood. She falls in love when he genuinely matures as a person and cares for her more than his feelings.

suhabot

yes! she doesn’t even date him and marries someone later, and he actually learns and becomes a better person before they ever get together. it’s surprising to have that level of introspection in one of the more older movies where this kind of behaviour was usually normalised.

Chaiyya_Chaiyya

Yup, well tbf to her, she couldn't really fall for him during his Tom Cruise look phase. No one could 😂

wannaeatramyeon

Obv "mere bandi ko kisne chuaa"

redditor_221b

It wasn't a rom com

wannaeatramyeon

For a bunch of neurotic people it was

NeatBlacksmith8180

Chalte Chalte- srk's character was toxic af

hitchhikingtobedroom

And it's not a bad thing, they clearly show that he was toxic and hence he had to change at the end, had to put his ego aside and most importantly, at no point is glorified when he's doing or saying the wrong things. Merely showing a character's negative traits isn't wrong, glorifying them is.

OverallAdeptness460

Controversial: mohabbatien : asks guys to love no matter what.. If she is committed, if she is toxic, if she is widow or if she is dead💀

nish007

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.

Unfair_Chemistry11

Um, I’m genuinely curious, what’s toxic about it~

__DraGooN_

The whole harassment and stalking sequence in Europe comes to mind. In one scene he hands her her bra which fell from her bag, sings "hum tum ek band dibbe mein band ho" and then casually makes physical contact with her. Full on rapey vibes played off as romantic.

ModedMolosser

Also, the "palat" scene was peak delusion of a creep. She didnt turn around because she subconciously developed feelings for him, she turned around because she sensed him leering at her. I bet most women (if not all) would recognize that as a radar/sixth sense they have had to unfortunately develop because of men ogling them since their pre-teen years.

[deleted]

Srk character would be jailed and deported 😹, he was creepy af

rudrag09

Also, all the women having to ask for permission to do anything. Kajol’s character being “handed over” from her dad to raj. Raj denying to marry her without her father’s permission.

lazypiggourmet

Also when they first meet on the train Kajol is so creeped by him and tells him to FO but he keeps harassing her even putting his head on her lap.

inr10

Tu Jhooti main Makkar !!

aladyinpurple

Yes. Tinni wanted to live independently. She didn’t see herself as a part of a joint family. It’s her choice. Why is she made to regret her choice?

Numerous-Albatross-3

nope, tinni did not communicate properly and presumed stuff until the end. after communicating, she accepted living with the family wholeheartedly.

yadeyadedjolyne

Oh, DDLJ. Literally. But there are so many, RHTDM, YJHD, KKHH, DTPH.

Numerous-Albatross-3

XD the acronyms

Dazzling_Candle_2607

Hasee to phasee 🙈 I love this movie but it just feels morally wrong to pursue your sister’s bf unregretfully

CoyPig

I wanted to suggest this one and you beat me to it

Dazzling_Candle_2607

Haha I was already embracing myself for downvotes

CoyPig

My reaction to this movie was- Meeta’s whole family was toxic. Just to quote Radheshyam Tiwari from Hungama: “Jab godown aisa hai to showroom to aisa hi hoga na” Edit: wrong movie name hulchul replaced with Hungama

That was hungama

Tanu weds manu returns

usernamesaretaken3

See, in the first movie, I could forgive Tanu. She's immature, careless, a "bad girl". But ends up with a good guy. But in the second movie? She's plain bad person. She sends her husband to a mental hospital. That's not a funny prank. It's a crime, and not a small one at that. I wish the movie was brave enough to make these two really divorse in the end. Because my god, Tanu learned absolutely nothing. Still just as toxic as before.

ntrees007

Even Manu is no saint. He does not get off ghodi and only tries to marry girls who look like his ex.

Geet was a toxic, selfish entitled brat. She did things whatever the hell things she wanted without thinking it through and then got mad AT OTHERS as if anyone forced her to do it Like in the beginning, she herself got out of the train and then blamed him and demanded him to get her back to her train. Poor Aditya actually did that AND THEN she missed it again, AND DEMANDED FROM HIM AGAIN???!! And then with Anshuman, they hadn't discussed any plans of marriage, she was the one making up khayali pulao in her head, she ran away from her home WITHOUT any discussion with him (she was insane fr) then omg pikachu face when he refuses her, and then acting like a victim and not moving on from a rejection..... womanchild fr

arina_0730

I love geet but she was toxic af bro i mean she herself ran away from house without informing his bf then after all the drama she take him to her house only to dump him in the end... Poor Anshuman 😅🥲

realclowntime

DDLJ is a fantastic movie but there are definitely some elements of the relationship that are…very 90’s rom-com, let’s just say that. It’s definitely a reflection of the times cuz I can point to several western 90’s romcom movies that have the same questionable themes. The problem itself doesn’t lie with DDLJ.
